    Ah, here it is. Great report. Did you know Campbeltown was RAF Machrihanish? It was actually certified by NASA as an emergency landing field for the Space Shuttle. The runway is enormous (though the active length now is much shorter, presumably to save on maintenance). I want to visit Barra in one of these DHC-6s...

    • @SOPLANETUBE
      @SOPLANETUBE  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I did ask the taxi driver about the humongous runway and that's when he told me about the air base - did not know about NASA though! That's cray! It was funny though seeing the tiny plane taking off from that massive place. And the actual airport building made me chuckle as well. There is no security at this airport! Oh I'd love to do Barra as well!

      I just saw that! That would be so weird - to have that grandma's living room style airport next to a spaceport....Guess they'd upgrade the airport but still....oh and they'd have to introduce a security check I guess LOL

    Just going for the day, arriving Barra at 1015 and departing at 1435 on 1st March. During the off season Loganair offer a day return for £79 and having visited the island on holiday last year and watched the Twin Otters arriving and departing from the beach it was something I needed to do. According to my ticket a complimentary snack and drink is provided... if not, there's a very nice cafe at Barra Airport. My only slight concern is what happens if I get there and the return flight is cancelled. Oh well - that's all part of the excitement I suppose!

    • @SOPLANETUBE
      @SOPLANETUBE  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a pretty good deal! I need to look into that!
      I had a Flex+ ticket for Campbeltown which had lounge access and snack included but there was no lounge in Campbeltown...and well...no snacks either LOL
      Fingers crossed everything goes well!

  • @luath5579
    @luath5579 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great film! What a weird flight path: I had to keep rewinding to check the locations. Taking off from Abbotsinch (Glasgow) Airport towards the south-west (roughly in the right direction for Campbelltown), but then swinging north over the Clyde to fly over Bearsden and the Kilpatrick Hills. It looked as though the plane then followed the north side of Strathblane (following the line of the Campsie Hills, with the Kilpatrick Hills visible across the valley in your shot) and continuing on north-west over the high peaks near Ben Lomond before turning southwards and down the west side of Loch Lomond, Finally heading south west over the hills of Argyllshire before eventually flying past the islands of Great Cumbrae, Bute and Arran. That's definitely taking the 'Scenic Route'! If that's the normal route I want to fly it.

    • @SOPLANETUBE
      @SOPLANETUBE  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! Thanks for watching :) That's quite some detective work you have done there haha. But I don't think we crossed the Clyde, did we? If you look here th-cam.com/video/R8aQZmnPR74/w-d-xo.html you can see the route on the pilot's screen. Have a look again? We took off from Runway 23 and pretty much headed out west and then once we hit the coast, headed southwest over Bute down to Campbeltown....If it hadn't been so long away, I'd pull up Flightradar24.....In any case, it was a very scenic route one way or another hahaha. You should totally dow it. It was great fun! I take it you are also in Glasgow?

    • @luath5579
      @luath5579 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SOPLANETUBE I agree that the flight chart doesn't show any deviation from the west and then southwest route, but you don't get hills with sharp peaks like those at 7:11 between Paisley and (say) Wemyss Bay and the islands in the loch at 7:25 are definitely those at the southern end of Loch Lomond. Very strange. No, not in Glasgow, although I know it well as I used to live by the Blane Water, north of Milngavie, which is how I know the area. Now in Gloucestershire.

    Hi Soplane, really enjoyed this regional flight upload.Gob smacked that Loganair somehow managed to cram in 4 seats abreast. I regularly jump out of a Twin Otter for skydiving at a drop zone in Cambridgeshire, can just about squeeze in 2 a breast.

    Uploaded right in the perfect moment! Sitting here in my bed with a coffee and suddenly the soplane video I've been waiting for appears on my phone 😍 looks like a great flight and smells like we should visit Scotland for some regional flights soon 😂 I always enjoy the more familiar feeling on smaller aircraft.. You can even feel that on the Q400. Everything is calm and everyone is friendly haha

      @SOPLANETUBE  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Guten Morgen! Glad I was able to provide you with your Saturday morning entertainment 🤣 It was an awesome flight...so much fun...even though it was suuuuuper tight (even for me). Not sure though what it would have felt like fully loaded I have to say! And yes...you should totally come for a visit...and head up to Barra from Glasgow to land on the beach!!!! It doesn't get more intimate that the copilot sitting down in front of you and doing a safety briefing LOL

    • @Flighttime787
      @Flighttime787 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      SOPLANE Barra was my main idea actually haha.. But we are thinking about coming to Scotland with car soon an drive around a bit but mix it up with some flights. I think we'll need a car especially to visit the highlands! I've been on a super short visit to some lake called 'loch Kathrina' in summer last year but I definitely want so see more :D

    • @SOPLANETUBE
      @SOPLANETUBE  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ooh that sounds like a great idea coming over with the car! Yeah, I guess having a car would definitely help. But remember that we are driving on the other side of the road! LOL The flights to Barra are actually not that expensive at about 100 pounds return and Loganair also does student fares (but you need to call them to book).

    I did, my father was from Campbeltown and we used to go back to see family every year when I was young, usually via train and boat and eventually by car. I have played golf on the (original) courses at Machrihanish, this was when it was RAF Machrihanish. I also flew into the airport once a few years ago with my father for a visit so he could attend a re-union of those who served on his ship during the war.

    My 6’6” husband flew on G BVVK and loved the legroom. Admittedly, he was in the middle seat right at the back and had the whole length of the aisle to stretch his legs. Unfortunately, the ‘plane was still on the beach at Barra after we flew back later that day as she had engine trouble. Fortunately we had booked to fly home on G HIAL anyway. That was about 7 years ago so I’m unsurprised to see she still has engine mishaps.

    Love this report!! I was on one of these Twin Otters of Air Seychelles flying from Mahe to Praslin last Oct. 15 mins flight. Safety video was shown in terminal before walking to the plane. Agree, it was very tight indeed....somehow, some rather large passengers manage to sit side by side in those twin seats....perfect for your squeeze test! 😂😂 There was a row of three seats right at the back to the right of the door. They have the best legroom 🤣🤣 Did your plane have those seats? I love the honesty of the pilot! Knowing the age of the plane, I would forgive her....it was too early in the morning for her arthritis! (A bit like me 😫😫😂😂) There is so much to explore in Scotland. I must visit up there more 😀😀

      On the flight back these two guys were sitting in the two seats next to me and it looked like some sausages squeezed into tin can hahaha....We had the three seats in the back as well.
