This past year I ended up in the hospital for four days in a state where I do not live. Two things were apparent. One - you are a medical orphan and the doctors you see really will not stand up for you and don't want to take you on as a patient because they know you are a short term patient. Two - the nursing staff were the best. They stood up for me and took it upon themselves to talk to the doctor who was assigned to me. I don't know what they said to him, but his attitude improved greatly after they finished with him. Nurses are the best!
As an elderly lady now, 65, I do not drive at night. I make sure I settle before the sunsets. It’s been very helpful for me. Safe travels everyone. I’m a beginner and still learning.
Carol = the female version of Bob Wells. She is a rockstar IMHO. She's smart articulate and highly experienced. Been following her channel since almost the beginning and no doubt she's one of the classiest people on TH-cam.
@@gloriouslifeonwheels3621 Well Bob is the original guru. I guess that's a hard act to follow LOL. But you are definitely much better looking than he is...😉
If you become ill and need to be hospitalized YOUR PETS become a real consideration during your hospital stay. Having a Plan B for their care and possibly their temporary relocation needs until you can reunite again IS PARAMOUNT. Sometimes you CAN NOT FULLY COMMUNICATE VERBALLY at the time of transport to an ER ROOM. Having friends or family members WHO YOU TALK WITH REGULARLY IS KEY. Having others who KNOW what your Plan B is... IS LIFE-SAVING for YOUR PETS.
Pawsters is an organization that will find foster homes for your pets during a crisis. They do NOT re-home pets. They foster pets with the express understanding that the pet will be returned to you when you are able to have them with you again. This is especially helpful for hospitalizations and is a free service. I'm not sure exactly what areas they are in. The one I'm familiar with is in Nashville, TN.
@@sherrywix8170 That's 💯 great information to know about. As a former First Responder, I know of cases where the attending Police Officers will try to secure a place for a pet if the owner is not able to communicate their wishes about their pets. Sadly that is oftentimes "subject to" the animal's willingness to be cooperative (non-aggressive).
Have back up people who can take ur animals...i have friends across the usa ..however people might say they will take care of ur animals...but if it actually happens that u need them to help. . . ....they vanish😱...have back up plans for that. Medical power and power of attorney in place...have someone for ur animals to..let them know
If your rig breaks down and you have nowhere to stay while you are having it repaired, rent a uhaul white cargo VAN. NOT a truck. Unless you want the big truck. I think the vans are around $20. Per day. BUT dont tell them youll be staying in it. You are using it to move stuff. Its against their policy to stay in it. Drive it to your rig and move your bedding and what you need into the van. I didnt come up with this idea, I think it was Bob Wells' idea.
That's a good idea, the problem is that they charge a buck a mile also on top of the daily rate. So you can double or triple the daily rate if you are not careful. As an example, I rented a $20 van to take construction debri to the dump, had to make a few trips, with the mileage it was a hundred dollars for a single day.
I am so happy i don't "have" to live in my vehicle. I think about the many that are not as lucky as i am to have a small home and travel for fun. I pray for safety, food and good health for you all.
I feel so bad for those who have been priced out of their homes and have no option but to live in a van; especially the elderly who are on a fixed income and cannot afford the high rents.
@@gloriouslifeonwheels3621and I am 67 now. My Social Security is not enough to live on by myself. I have to have a roommate to survive. The trouble is that I’ve needed a roommate to survive for 40+ years. Health concerns prevented me from “moving up the ladder” when I was younger, so by default my income hit an even lower level than I had planned on after college.
I’m one of them-will be closing on my house in 6 weeks. I’m an RN who got sick with MS and can’t afford the high rents on my disability. I will be using the money from my house for a van so that I have a place to live .

Mortgage companied are always willing to work with you to do what they can to lower payments by way of loan modification. Rent the house as an Airbnb; get a roommate anything to hold onto your most prized possession. Years ago I fell on hard times and had to declare chapter 11 and do a loan modification. Today the price of my home has skyrocketed from $120,00 to $500,000 and I am able to live in a lovely 3 b/r 3 b/r house for a mortgage payment of $608.00 monthly. There are many things you can do to lower your mortgage payments such as finding the cheapest home owners insurance; get the tax office to remove school tax, etc.
All this advice should be seriously listened to! I have been living in a small class c for seven years now and have experienced all these issues. I am very mechanical and this has saved me from the breakdown issues. In the last few years I have had two serious medical emergencies. Right now I have cancer and can't get it treated because of my nomad life. RV parks in bigger cities won't allow older rvs. And I can't afford it even if they would! I have found loneliness to be the next hardest thing to deal with. Most other issues I have learned to deal with fairly well. At 70 living on $1200. A month with no debt. Things in this world probably won't end well for me. BUT! ChristJesus is my Lord and Savoir so all the above He gives me the daily Joy and strength to be content. If you don't understand this I am sorry and pray you would
May God bless you heaps. Praying for your healing. Just had the idea of you finding a good Christian home that would take you as a boarder while you got your treatment, and until you are well again, and can get back on the road. I will pray for that for you. God will show you what to do. Shalom. ❤🫂🕊✝️
Dave, near me is a church with an RV in the parking lot. I was told that the occupant was getting treatment for a serious medical condition. The church allows them to stay there whenever they need to, with electric. It's possible to find yourself such an arrangement. There are many caring people in the world, I hope you find some to help you out.
Yes...more budget videos.....this one was,GREAT...like Carole stated....I had to stay at mechanic garage,(for TEN DAYS,,,(while getting parts).BIG JOB, transmission..thankfully, the owner and crew were Beyond Kind and amazing ,they made sure I was safe, gave me their, home numbers,,,brought me water, ice and even lunch, in a tiny town in NM
I learned in Home Economics in 9th grade how to write a budget and I still do. I don't eat out because prices are high and in some places quality has gone down because the workers don't care. I'm not paying for cold, old food when I get it home.
Basic necessities a functional BATHROOM to use and refresh yourself is a MUST !!! Thank you for speaking the TRUTH, lady Carol !!! Hopefully you will save many "wanderlust" people from making a BIG HORRIBLE mistake ! I love my stix and brix ! God Bless all !
Please keep in mind that not all vanlifers do this for fun and travel--for many of them, it's a necessity. Shelters, being out on the street, and living with family (if you have one) are not always safe, clean options. Rent/mortgage/utilities are sky-high and we're being priced out.
Unless it’s an emergency, most potential vanlifers do some research before they hit the road, enabling them to figure out hygiene as well as sleeping and cooking arrangements. You can stay clean and toilet in a sanitary manner without running water.
There are some great budget channels out there. I watch a couple. It’s so important no matter how much people make, it’s astonishing how carelessness can blow through money, or accumulate debt. Budgeting for low income nomads will be a great topic!
I’m glad you’re saying the truth. Even bob wells simplifies problems and doesn’t like to say anything negative. I made big mistake buying motorhome after selling my house. I didn’t like the constant anxiety looking for a free campsite or parking and financial stress. I think most you tubers lie if they said the truth they wouldn’t get the views.
If you relyi on FREE campsite that's wildly unrealistic. Most National Park, National Forest, Corp of Engineering campsites are $20/nite. They offer electric, water, showers & most offer visitor centers offer programs. A senior pass costs are 1/2 discount. If your realistic budget doesn't include $600/mo for campsites van life isn't an option for you. The advantage of mobile living is you move/milgrate your home to suit your needs. Cool climates in summer & warm in winter.
Great video!! One thing that I wanted to add is even with the best plans, there are pitfalls. For instance, you are driving to your camping reservation and the Interstate comes to a complete halt. Now you are stuck for hours and you paid a non-refundable deposit. It is hard to call as you are in stop and go traffic and it is now starting to get dark. It was another night at a noisy truck stop. The constant stress of it all along with irregular eating and sleeping can definitely take its toll. Thank you for all you do for us.
Yes to all of this!!! And something you didn’t mention is decision fatigue! For people who travel all the time, constantly moving from place to place is gets draining. Constantly finding new places to park, learning new layouts at the grocery store, finding new coffee shops, finding good gas stations, meeting new friends, finding safe laundromats, and on and on and on will eventually lead to burnout. Our nervous systems are on alert in new places. Routines and familiarity let our mind and body settle. That’s generally the reason so many people burn out on vanlife within a year or two. They’re tired at the bone level and just want to rest. Slow travel is the antidote decision fatigue. When I’m not traveling in a caravan, caravans create a sense of security and stability themselves, I stay in one area for weeks. I shop at the same grocery store, see the same gas station attendant, park in the same 5 or 6 places, while seeing the area. Once I’ve really learned a place, I move on. People who are part time don’t encounter burnout as much, because they go back to the safety and security of their homes, but for people who want to travel full-time, throw in periods of slow travel to rest and restore. You’ll be on the road longer if you do.
I lived in my high-top Promaster for three years. I learned I am not comfortable in "caravan's." I am not a hermit, I just enjoy my own space and am not prepared to give any and everyone who wants to look inside my van a guided tour or tell the story of my life. I am grateful for the experience of being a Nomad, but I am a whole lot happier living tiny off-grid, although I still have my van and probably always will.
Thank you so much. Fantasy and reality collide often. I’m 75 and have toyed with idea of a nomadic life. I’m not really able at this time to implement anything. More vicarious at this point. I’ve not been permanent in my life and as you said a home base can be important . All of your points are much appreciated. I will look forward to more videos.
One reason I never did buy a van and go on the road was because I was terrified of breaking down somewhere in the boonies with no cell signal. I just can't even imagine how scary that would be for me, in my 70s. I have no desire to travel full time, but I've never seen any of the country, so it would be nice to do a little traveling. I can't afford too much traveling. I may be forced to live in my tin little subcompact car soon, if they raised my rent too high. I'm afraid now, because I really have no savings and I haven't received my rent renewal for this year. If they don't renew my rent, I''ll be in big trouble I certainly don't want to be homeless living in my car in the summer.
I certainly hope you grt your rent renewal. Of youndon't do reach out to me at Gloriouslifeonwheels@gmail.com Maybe I can with help from friends outfit your vehicle so it can work at least temporarily for you.
That's because some people that want to make Walmart or other stores their campground for more than a few days and they ruined it for the responsible and respectful people.
Someone at a WalMart near me changed their rv engine oil in the parking lot leaving a mess behind for workers to clean up. Of course they no longer allow overnight parking now!
I think this is the most important video you've ever made. I considered van life, but my daughter talked me out of it. I'm so happy that she didn't let me do it. I know I wouldn't have been happy
On a recent car trip, a cog in the shifter broke. My husband was able to take it apart and rig it till we got the right part. If that was me alone, i would have called a tow truck and who knows what would have happened as far as repairs. Thats a scary reality for women.
@gloriouslifeonwheels3621 I'm sorry that happened to you. But why not get towed to nearest repair place? I assume something was closer than 200 miles....
I went through this a couple years ago. Trying to live in a van, in the city where I work. My 18yo got covid, I had a complete breakdown that I made a mistake.. luckily I had savings that was spent on Hotel for a month and then another apartment. By myself I would totally do it again with lessons learned, but my daughter says she does not want to. So now I wait and dream.. slowly making my van better as I work on it waiting for my time.❤
anyone going out might want to wait until novemebr 5th- things are getting bad fast. also instead of buying a storage locker- buy a second vehicle and store it- if one goes down- rent a ride and come get it until your main vehicle is replaced or fixed. then tow the junker back to storage
Thanks for speaking these truths … I am 59 and blessed with a home, but working a very stressful job which is taking a toll on my health - so I have been contemplating life on the road as a way to retire early. I have obsessively watched hundreds of videos which show the cool renovations of vans and trailers, and the glorious freedom and adventure of being a nomad, but sometimes I think these videos just add to my stress and dissatisfaction - as I feel my youth and health slipping away! I still haven’t decided which direction I will take, so I appreciate your candid videos that give a more honest and complete picture of what life as a nomad can be like when it’s not all freedom and adventure - but a harsher reality for a lot of folks, and a real trial if something goes wrong with your vehicle or your health. Please pass this donation on to someone in need! Thanks! 🌸
You're absolutely right. I have decided to have a home base and do more camping. I thought van life would be for me, however I don't like the fact that you don't have a place to rest long-term. I don't so summers due to heat so a home-base is vital for me,
I did RV-ing for two years, it was a lot of work, maintenance, repairs, preparation, expensive. I had to do repairs during a trip, always something to fix and not much enjoyment time. Had to find a place to park for storage when not used. Trips had longer travel times. When you’re the only driver, you are dead tired driving. After two years the novelty wore off and reality set in and I sold my RV and went back to driving by car or truck and staying in motels. I have pictures and memories, I’m glad I did it when I was young and had the energy and not after I retired. Driving and living in a home on wheels, never again. This is a good video that speaks the truth and reality of living on the road.
I love the concept of a road family. I have traveled solo and did pet sitting. It was not fun at all. The only part of it I enjoyed was meeting up with another house sitter and spending a day touring old homes in Newport RI and eating out together. I learned that I am a social person, and also an introvert. I love traveling and opening myself up to new people and cultures. I want to travel in a minivan and meet up with others, even if for a day, and then go on from there. Also want to do some international travel. With a home base. I love a/c and watching my fav tv shows, cooking for myself and not just road meals! Thanks for being a kind, softer voice about van life. We appreciate you so much!
sThank you for telling the truth , I see so many people saying how great it is and they are living their dream. I could never do it and I know some people have no choice but it looks really challenging to me! The problem I see is people making it look glorious and there are so many people forced to live this lifestyle. and they are not thinking it is too glorious! Seniors need help and the public needs to know many seniors living in poverty ! I think anyway! Always enjoy your videos!
There are people who are making it work for themselves. But it takes planning. You can't.just jump.into it with no forethought and expect a positvve outcome. Plan, prepare, and plan some more!
@@gloriouslifeonwheels3621 Yes, I watch a lot of the video’s on van dwellers, RV’ers and such. It does seem like some of them are leaving the life now! I always worry about their safety out there!
You are right, seniors often need help. For many of us this is living the dream because we were able to plan and prepare. The tragedy is those who never expected to be homeless and were forced into living as a nomad because of something that happened in their life beyond their control. Those people need help.
@@pamflowers8364 I don’t think it is “many” of the seniors living the dream out there many the minority! The people living in some kind of dream have no idea what is going on with the MAJORITY of seniors! Do you have any idea how many of them are living in poverty without enough money for food, shelter and medicine. I work with them everyday and I know what is going on out there!
My son's transmission and computer went out and between waiting for parts and getting the work done it took two solid months to replace the transmission and about five-thousand dollars give or take. A short term rental can run around $2000 a month (shady motel), so doing the math he would have needed around ten-thousand dollars as a buffer if he was a nomad. An alternative would be to camp for two week periods (maximum allowed at a campground) at $24 a night (Includes showers and electricity at most of the campgrounds her) and move around to different campgrounds for $1344 a month. Note: Having a credit card with a large credit line could be a lifesaver in an emergency.
The America.thr Beautiful for $80 a year or $80 lifetime as a senior is a great option. It let's you camp at National Forests and Core of Engineer sites among others for 1/2 off. I've stayed at beautiful locations for $7.50 and $12 a night. Also checking spots thru Hopcamp. Sometimes really cheap spots that might let you stay for less for extended stays. Lastly, Boondockers Welcome. Costs around $80 for a year membership and you can stay places free for a night or two. Possibly would.allow.more for a small fee.
My husband just got his vehicle back, it was his engine total replacement. It was 2 1/2 months. We live out in the sticks 20 mile from town and had to depend on my little car. We got the vehicle back August 15th. The repair cost 13 grand, took all his savings and part of mine. Went to repair shop to pick it up and it was chaotic, earliest appointment for a diagnostic was Mid-October! I was listening to the people booking the appointments. I was in the hospital for an emergency back in April and was in for 3 days, sudden unexpected crisis. That bill was unbelievable, thank God for my insurance and it was covered. Then my brother passed away in June and I was still not feeling well and was having scheduled Md appts. His funeral was about 250 miles away, my husband didn't want me going due to the fact that he was scared I would get sick again and I wouldn't be near my providers. Can't imagine being out of town in a strange place with all this happening. I also have my beautiful dog, my husband had to care for him, oh well. I hope no one has to go thru something like this being a nomad, I pray for people who have to be out on the roads a lot. I wish the best for you all, please listen to her she is right. She does not glamorize life in this period of extremely high inflation and society being in unrest! Sorry for being long winded
Living in a van or in a mobile home with no land base is an impossibility for me. It is not all fun and games I watch many thousands of these bee videos of people living in their vans, and the truth of the matter is when you have a breakdown and you put it in the shop what if it cost too much to fix it and you can’t stay in a motel? This is not a joke. This is hell that our government has put upon us by not making any kind of provision for senior citizens Or those living in poverty, which is millions of people.
Truth. My home base is a mobile home, an old trailer home, on a rented lot, in Florida. Such that it is, I do have a roommate who doesn’t travel and doesn’t mind that I do - as long as I take my dog with me, lol.
*"This is hell that our government has put upon us by not making any kind of provision for senior citizens or those living in poverty..."* I am sorry but, that seriously *offends* me on so many levels! First of all, I am a patriot and get very heated when an American dumps on this country that is far better than any other on the planet with regard to the freedoms we enjoy. I am a USA Veteran, proud of it, and didn't serve just to hear the people I served, albeit in my small way, bïtch about it. And for the record, I did not retire unscathed. Secondly, this country, and our "government" is not a physical person, but an institution, which we all have had, and will have, a hand in creating. Further, the government is not here to feed, clothe, house and I won't say what I am thinking, but let's just say, wipe our behinds from cradle to grave. And, as a final point, perhaps the most relevant to your self-entitled comment, our government *HAS MADE PROVISIONS* as in our *SOCIAL SECURITY CHECKS* that we paid into *IF WE WORKED FOR A LIVING* that was designed to help people nearly 100 years ago, but for the last 50+ years, our generation, has been designed *TO AUGMENT* our retirement savings plans, not *BE our ONLY source* of funds to live out our golden years. Social Security is NOT enough to *LIVE ON,* nor was it *DESIGNED TO BE.* Social security is meant to make it *MORE* comfortable. That point is the most misunderstood and refuted point ever! So, please, stop bïtching about how *"The Gov't"* is supposed to pay for our survival in retirement. For over 50 years it has been for our additional comfort to add to the other savings we were all responsible to plan for in our youth. I love this country and take serious offense when anyone whines about how bad off they are because of their own life choices. America is the land of *OPPORTUNITY,* not a free ride. Sorry if I've pissed any of you off, but reality is reality and feelings don't pay the bills. 🇺🇸

@@rattlecat5968 The government bailed out General Motors and they absconded with my 401 monies in 2008 leaving me with crap-so yeah they owe me. Then let's discuss the fact that I was a stay-at-home mom working my butt off for zero and my husband left me broke and working my butt off again, I never took welfare, and my kids hated the fact that I was working 60hrs a week to put food on the table. Keep enjoying your old white man privilege.
There are too many channels enticing older folks into living an adventure traveling and living in a van. It's not reality if you're on SS income your van breaks down it's expensive, if there's dangerous bad weather you need to stay in a hotel very expensive, repairs are expensive, taking a daily shower is impossible you need a gym membership that's expensive, it's better to rent a spare room than roam around putting yourself in danger especially true for older women. Our government has to provide housing for the elderly, a single woman on SS alone can't afford rent food car an necessities!
The problem …… rent and cost of living push the rlderly into no other option other than living in their home / car ….. I live in a small town …… am floored by what people are paying for rent
Good luck with that. Our corporate government wants you dead if you are on SS. We are costing too much. But people still vote rethuglican. A vote for suicide. Been happening since saint wonny weagan. Americans have voted themselves out of existence for decades.
I can relate Carol, I’ve had to navigate many of those things. I don’t have a home base so I started out with a large emergency fund. The days of a $3000 emergency fund are unfortunately not realistic in these times. Anyway appreciate your videos take care.😊
Being 83 and sometimes contemplating becoming a person in my vehicle hearing all your good sense advice is gold! I would not give up my home, and not hit the road full time, but inches at a time. However, I do not have the cash or skills to even do small bites. In a few weeks my family is gathering at a camp sight for a week. I have outfitted my ford Escape for sleeping so maybe that is what I will have to do it for now. Oddly enough back when I was much younger and newly widowed I wanted to hit the road, me and my dog. However, back then that was not a "thing" and all my family and friends were horrified at my desire. So I gave it up. Still wish I had, mourning the loss of my husband this was my coping idea, but I let others stop me in my tracks. Thank you for your very sound advice.
Great video, honest and with no sensationalism. But most of these problems arise from either a person being dumb enough to not do research and prepare at all, or being an - excuse me - absolute idiot who doesn't know how basic budgeting works. Isolation? Prepare, test it out, check for yourself. Running out of money? Learn to count. Sorry if it sounds harsh, these are all valid points, but oh my God some people live in a fairy land and expect things to go smoothly for them... 🤦 Much love from Sydney Australia
Great points my dear! I think maintenance problems have to be the scariest and most problematic, especially for a woman. 😮😮 Listening to you brought my "gratefulness meter" up a few notches. I wish I had the land for people (women in particular) had a place to stop in and just rest for a few days if nothing else. I'd love to meet you in person. I can tell you're a nice lady.
Really good advice my story is a little long, but let me say if you have a home that's paid for don't sell it save get you something to travel in with what you need but always keep your home base or save for a piece of land make sure it has water and power put a building with at least a nice bathroom and laundry room make sure there's no zoning so you can live in your van or RV or a tiny house. I made a huge mistake I'm now back in a house i bought but now i have payments when i could have been on easy street.
Thank you so much and thanks to several commenters! Gosh, while I’m exploring van life as a senior, you brought up some things I had not considered such as when your ‘home’ is in for repairs! Additionally, I’m beginning to understand why my circle of influence suggests I rethink my plans! They tease that I’m a glam-camper in the group, so what makes me think that mindset will not factor into my van life? One commenter addressed ‘being too domesticated’ has its issues. Have a ‘van life family’ was something I had not considered. I desired to possibly being on the road next year, Lord willing, yet it’s been nearly 7 months gathering info and I’m questioning that 2025 plan!😏!
Discrimination against older rvs at rv parks now - sad for rvers / you can't even sleep in your own vehicle on your own property or someone else's w-permission ... we keep losing our freedoms ... criminalizing houselessness ... despicable ... sorry to rant, this just triggered my thoughts ... great video
❤❤❤❤❤❤ Hi Carol, I loved this video. Carol leave it to you I can always count on you to talk the truth about this life. I was a nomad as you know for many years by myself with my service dog and I am telling you the honest truth that I never hear people talk about It wasn't all great It was very lonely for me because a long time ago I read a book called Blue highways. I did it before I hit the road and it was about a long time ago before cell phones internet anythingI involving technology so on our paper maps anything of the back roads or off the freeway or highway were blue rose on the map. And after reading that book I decided I don't want to be on highways and I don't want to be on freeways otherwise you're never going to see anything but the same stuff home Depot you know Jamba juice Starbucks and believe me it's as you know from the East Coast to the west so I promised myself I'm going to go on the blue highways. Well doing that kept me away from anybody that was living as a nomad and when I did it that's 25 years ago I started. When I watch videos today what I realize is that a lot of people are very young very athletic traveling with 4x4 sprinter vans going to Moab and arches and all kinds of out of the way places. Here's a quick story on New Year's Eve I was on a back road in Alabama. I had two tires that blew and it was one in the morning and I'm on a blue highway and there's nothing there. All the sudden I see a sign handyman mechanic with the phone number of course the sign looked like it was hand painted and it was here I am on New Year's Eve it's now 1:00 a.m. I call this guy he's completely high on meth and he said I will be right there he asked me what size my tires were and by himself he changed both my tires on a teeny highway in the middle of nowhere now that was a miracle from God. I just want to end by saying thank you for admitting that this is not always a fun life and I thought I was doing something wrong I couldn't meet a tribe of people because I didn't go to court site I didn't go to places where there were people gathered. So I mean it I tell people you know what it's not all roses and adventure I don't know what to say it is because it's many different things but it also can be very difficult and very lonely. Thank you Carol see you at the live.
Great video! Spot on and applies to RV nomad too. One option is to pick up a workcamper gig to give place to park and funds to build up. Breathing space and secure place to be. RV parks, National Parks, County and City parks all hire workcampers. Theres a lot to be said for senior nomads taking a gig during months of bad weather to hunker down, meet others doing same thing and have a base to enjoy an area while paying for a camp space by trading your time to work. Budget is top priority, every dollar budget and cash stuffing envelope system work great. Imho. Planning allows you to Enjoy the journey!
You're a blessing for sharing your wisdom through experience. I spent 2yrs in my suv before finally getting sec8 housing in a Sr complex. It's not ideal but my health was rapidly declining and I'm so very grateful for this shelter every day. I often offer for women traveling through to stop by, rest & refresh yet, I'm often too far off a major path for them. Thanks again for sharing your time and wisdom for fellow nomads. ❤stay well and safe.
Those places dont dislike nomands. Its people who try to live in parking lots. I know a few. Then there is some who prey on others. Or drink and fight. It happens in camp grounds. Happy Trails. ✨
Van life is more expensive than living in an economical apartment. It's a very difficult life. Living in a van going on vacation is great having to live in a vehicle as the only option really socks.
Yes. It absolutely sucks! I hope to be approved by the Housing Authority here in West Texas mid July so that I can get out of my car and back into a tiny apartment! This life truly sucks! Bob Wells also sucks for his beguiling lies about living in a vehicle! One needs lots of money to live in a vehicle half way comfortably! I have NOT saved a DIME living this way! It's ALL a lie!! I hate this life! I hate it! It's also humiliating!!
That’s not true. If someone already has a vehicle and doesn’t drive cross country all the time or doesn’t travel, vanlife is cheaper than an apartment. Vanlife is way harder than living in an apartment though - especially day to day life - and more people need to talk about that.
Thankyou, Carol... great advice. I think that some people run into trouble when they expect to be able to live in permament "holiday mode" with all the treats (takeaway meals, coffees and icecreams) as their everyday lifestyle, and then are surprised that living like that costs so much. People who post videos and are content, even happy, are people who are willing to adapt to inconveniences; content with their own company; and practice sticking to a budget, hopefully with some money for an emergency fund at the outset. Also, some money needs to be put away to replenish that. Discipline and planning... some people have it, some can learn it, and some will just have to bumble along. A good relationship with God is the best preparation and safety-net of all... wisdom, guidance, protection and provision all there for the asking. Thank God for that! God bless. 🙂👍❤🫂
Hi Carol 😊, thanks for joining advising this life can be awesome if you prepare! AND if you have emergency preparedness for when Shit Happens! AND an emergency fund if you have to go back to sticks & bricks.
Your points were exactly what I needed to see all in one place. Wonderful presentation! I have been considering doing van life on a limited basis. I haven't found *THE* van yet, but only because dealerships within 100 mile radius here in the northeast don't have any, except brand new EVs - and I know better than to risk running out of power with no charging station! Anyway, my son is hoping I will change my mind and drop this "craziness!" 🤣 But, I'm retired and have my home base, a reliable retirement income, am not afraid of "isolation," can access health care anywhere in the states and am totally ready for an adventure! Now, I can approach my son and list all these concerns and he'll realize I *CAN* do this! Thank you for giving me the ammunition to quell his fears! Safe travels and can't wait for your next video!
We don’t live in our motorhome full time but have taken some long trips. When we had problems finding a place to camp we stayed in a motel. You shouldn’t travel so far from home if you don’t have emergency funds.
Thank you for this video. This is great advice! Budgeting is always a big thing. I am looking to retire, but it will be a few more years unless we make some major adjustments! That is what we are doing now! Now, if food would stop going up weekly!
I have heard that WalMart is going to digital pricing so they can change orices asmt a moments notice. Or thry could even now raise prices during busy times of the day and go back to lower prices during off bours!
Thank you. I am listening to this video while I color and cut my hair (I do it myself because it is free - and a five dollar henna rinse that I put in my hair looks like I went to a hair salon); and I just realized that if I move into my car, I would have to rent a hotel room once in a while for my hair care - and for a long, hot shower for relief from physical pain that I have because of chronic illness.
The main thing is knowing that ahead of time and deciding if that would work for.your budget. That is the kind of thing I hope.people will.consider before starting rather than after adopting a.nomadic lifestyle.
I have been living in my subcompact Ford SUV since August 2023 after I retired in July. I'm now 66.5 yrs old. I have not been able to dye my hair for that entire duration! I am all gray now in the front and I hate it. Cannot afford a salon either!
@@Hard_Car_LifeI get my hair done at cosmetology schools. Very inexpensive and the ones I go to give senior discounts. They have to do a decent job or they flunk out; also, the instructors come around and check their work, make suggestions and answer questions if they or the customer has any. I’ve been doing it for years and have only had one problem, but the instructor fixed it.
You are absolutely right to Gloria. As more and more people choose his lifestyle because they think it's cheap. And The Matrix is waking up to this and make it more rules to stop us from doing it. This way to try and keep us in The Matrix.
I am not sure why youtube has popped several videos in my feed. I am not a nomad. Have no plans to be a nomad. However, your voice is so calm and reassuring, it seems like a nice life.
I watch these videos because I’m interested in getting a class B travel van. I’m probably a couple years out, 2 to 3, and I want to know from everyone else’s experience how to navigate doing it alone. At this point I do not plan to be a nomad. I am night blind so I cannot drive at night until my cataracts have ripened enough that they will remove them. I would however like to camp in my home state in the state parks. The state is eight hours from one end to the other so traveling for 3 to 4 hours to get to a site would be fine. I would still need my regular vehicle and I am planning on buying a home first, hopefully this year or next year. So I will have a homebase I may just spend weekends in the mountains or at the beach, but with the restrictions on minimum stays, especially over holidays, it will get rather expensive in. I am currently working full-time but I’m collecting my full Social Security and so my finances are in the best shape they’ve been in for most of my adult life. I just wish my body were in his good shape.
I think one of the most important things you said was try to make friend. Join travel groups. Attend meet ups. I do well alone but it's more fun to be with people. And yes. You have to have a budget and a savings. Money gets tight find a place to stay a little longer.
I feel so fortunate to have my little home base! I’ve broken down on the road. If you can, good to have roadside assistance with extended towing coverage. Make sure the budget is realistic! You are the best!
#1 KNOW yourself. I enjoy watching van dwellers. I hate to travel, ❤ a recliner & would not want to crawl around on my knees in a van. I’d try to find a place to tent camp first & last resort would be a car or van. Lots of folks have private property & even vacant mobile home/RV lots they’d be willing to rent (with power & water). Maybe someone could start a list of share/rent spaces.
@@gloriouslifeonwheels3621 I’m really low tech, but I sure wish I had the know how to create/maintain such a list. I envision a golden girls & guys camp.
This video is the best explanation and something I learned firsthand on the road for 4 years full time before buying a home base. Every person thinking about this lifestyle should see this! ❤
My biggest problem with van life is camping in the Summer. I cannot handle the heat. I went to Pikes Peak in Co in July (high altitude) and it was beyond hot and mosquitos. I had Cookie then and we just packed up and went home. Cookie couldn't handle the heat either. My heart goes out to people who don't have a sticks and bricks in the Summer time. I don't mind the Winter. I love the cold, but I don't know what I'd do if I had to go full time and survive the Summer. It's also a big concern when traveling with animals. If you get sick, who will care for your animals. So many things to think about. Nomad life is great, but there are many things to consider. Excellent subject Carol. ❤❤❤
Yeah the summer heat is probably the main thing that's keeping me from going out right now. Just don't want to have to struggle like that every night or every other night.
Carol - absolutely well done, great insight and wisdom here. This would be an ideal video for even occasional nomads or vacationers to watch. Breakdowns can happen to anyone - budgeting and having some $$ tucked away in reserves is a great idea if folks can manage that and as you said, help with the worry and anxiety. Hope you are having a great weekend, thank you for all you do.
Honey I have wanted to try Van Life for a few years now and I have had the opportunity to do so, but I keep waiting for my son to move out. I am so glad you posted this video because people need to know what to consider. Thank you for you honesty honey. God Bless you. Have a great Summer.
God bless you for sharing your valuable experiences which save people unneeded grief. i lived in my van for a semester while I finished classes and moves out of state. And I realized the inconveniences were too great of change to Nomad lifestyle If I was on the road that much I would become a truck driver and good dough and home on wheels. Why not? And then all of those issues you mention would disappear. You have a well thought out lifestyle with a solid home base. Very intelligent move Be Safe..
Thanks, thanks for an eye-opener; some things I'd thought about and some I hadn't. I've daydreamed about being on the road, this is a good dose of common sense. Great advice for nomads and even for RV weekenders. Happy trails!
Another great subject, Carol. Thanks for not sugar-coating van life. I believe you met Bob Welles of CheapRVliving. He has touched on a lot of your concerns.
Hello from the Westcoast of BC, Canada. Excellent information and reminders. A month in a one bedroom apartment where I live is still cheaper than campgrounds and buying wood for fires. Many you can only stay 2 weeks at a time. This is all if you can even find an apartment to rent. I plan on sleeping away from neighbors from hell at night and home at day. Looking at all my free options before hand. God bless you and thank you for sharing. 🙏💕🙏
@@gloriouslifeonwheels3621 thanks. I'm 75 now so have to be very careful. Have learned a lot from my mistakes. Lol. It took me 3 years to purchase my car. 😂 Have slept in backseat before and in the daytime Have had visits from police. They should be out capturing criminals not old ladies who just need a power nap. I enjoy your channel and drop by often. See you again soon.
Well said!!!!!! A lot of TH-camrs make that life look exciting and rules and laws are being implemented against this life. They then go buy land themselves and those that they have led or influenced are stuck out like chuck after they have left what they have to support others on their channel to buy what they want. Vicious cycle. I believe that the camping videos are glamping and not camping or survival. These are my thoughts and it was left as a comment and not a debate. Your wisdom needs to be heard more!!!!!!
There are a lot of videos glamorizing the lifestyle. There are, however, some accurate videos too. I think the ones with sunsets and pina coladas are folks who are just in the life for a short time or have substantial assets so they basically are taking their homelike on the road. Most do not have that luxury and are making the choice to be nomads because of financial struggles, especially older women.
I love watching everyone's video except when they cook and eat (not how to lesson videos). Who want to watch someone eat and bounce their head as its the best thing🤔....its a quick delete for me😂 So thank you on the how to on: budget, security, meet ups and all you are sharing here🙏🙏🙏
Hi Carol, thank you for this informative video. Yes, it is important to budget when on the road. Thank you once again . Happy trails safe journeys and be blessed
These good nurses and these not so good, but when their good their great
Nurses rule. They run the hospital not the drs….

Carol = the female version of Bob Wells. She is a rockstar IMHO. She's smart articulate and highly experienced. Been following her channel since almost the beginning and no doubt she's one of the classiest people on TH-cam.
Wow. I'll take that although I have nowhere near the knowledge Bob has.🥰

Agree...Smart,kind and loving... THE BEST ADVICE YOU CAN GET
PURE CLASS
Yes. And she really has a heart for women who become homeless as they’ve gotten older. A good advocate.
Excellent points.
This is a big concern of mine, and one I've thought about a lot.
Have back up people who can take ur animals...i have friends across the usa ..however people might say they will take care of ur animals...but if it actually happens that u need them to help. . . ....they vanish😱...have back up plans for that. Medical power and power of attorney in place...have someone for ur animals to..let them know
I used to think I wanted to live in a van, until a hot day hits, then I'm thankful for my apartment with AC
You have to head north in the summer and head south in the winter to avoid weather extremes.
I'm glad you recognize this because, for you, you have made the right choice.
U can also add ac to your vehicle 🚜
@@yvonnelee5766Yes but how far North unless you're close to one of the Great Lakes?
Mountain areas are cooler as well
If your rig breaks down and you have nowhere to stay while you are having it repaired, rent a uhaul white cargo VAN.
Nomadic Fanatic stayed in a Uhaul van for a bit while his RV was in the shop.
Great idea!
Great idea!😊
Amen, always think ahead
I am so happy i don't "have" to live in my vehicle.
I think about the many that are not as lucky as i am to have a small home and travel for fun.
I pray for safety, food and good health for you all.
Thanks. I sort of have to. I do have somewhere I can go if I need to.
Well, I'm happy for you, .
I feel so bad for those who have been priced out of their homes and have no option but to live in a van; especially the elderly who are on a fixed income and cannot afford the high rents.
My.heart breaks for them as well. It is a national disgrace.

@@terriburrosskistner1268 I don't want to sound like I am advising you or anything; but if at all possible try to hang onto your house.
If you don't understand this I am sorry and pray you would
I wish you peace sir. And hope you can find a way to receive treatment.
May God bless you heaps. Praying for your healing. Please keep in mind that not all vanlifers do this for fun and travel--for many of them, it's a necessity. Shelters, being out on the
street, and living with family (if you have one) are not always safe, clean options.
@@marigolds49 yes we are. 🤦 & It's getting worse.
This lifestyle, in my opinion, is much more expensive than sticks and bricks.
Awesome video talk. Thank you. Blessings to you.
Strangely, this hasn’t put me off wanting to nomad. But it’s wise to address all these issues and be aware
Perfect description..mfantasynajd reality colliding👏
Of youndon't do reach out to me at Gloriouslifeonwheels@gmail.com
Maybe I can with help from friends outfit your vehicle so it can work at least temporarily for you.
It is sure good to have people in your life who have your best interest at heart.
On a recent car trip, a cog in the shifter broke. My husband was able to take it apart and rig it till we got the right part.
If that was me alone, i would have called a tow truck and who knows what would have happened as far as repairs.
Thats a scary reality for women.
I had a major hose break. Had to be towed 200 miles bak to my mechanic!
It's not just women Hannah. I don't know anything about cars, so it would be impossible for me to assume the van life.
@gloriouslifeonwheels3621 I'm sorry that happened to you.
But why not get towed to nearest repair place? I assume something was closer than 200 miles....
AAA Plus is a life saver.
I agree that caution needs to be exercised until we see what develops leading up to and after November 5th.
I don't so summers due to heat so a home-base is vital for me,
A place to rest and take breaks at is sure a treasure!!
I worked on transportation for many years.
Vans are too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter.
I am glad you got to have this experience too at a time in life that best suited you.
I loved living in my van, until diarrea hit me one night, then its not fun and when you gotta go, you gotta go!
Oh my. What might be an inconvenience in a house or apartment can become a full fledged crisis in a vehicle.
Thank you for speaking the truth. There are too many sights that attempt to glamorize van life.
For some who are well financed it is a fabulous romantic adventure. But that is not most of the folks, especially seniors.
sThank you for telling the truth , I see so many people saying how great it is and they are living their dream.
Yep...I can't afford a place to live. Very grateful for my vehicle and have adapted pretty well but it gets a little dicey at times.
Thanks for the realistic information!!!
Even worse, the gov't imported vast, vast millions of foreigners to lower wages, increase house prices sky-high, etc..
Truth. My home base is a mobile home, an old trailer home, on a rented lot, in Florida. Such that it is, I do have a roommate who doesn’t travel and doesn’t mind that I do - as long as I take my dog with me, lol.
*"This is hell that our government has put upon us by not making any kind of provision for senior citizens or those living in poverty..."*
I am sorry but, that seriously *offends* me on so many levels!

@@rattlecat5968 First and foremost, thank you for your dedication and service!! Secondly, thank you so much for speaking the truth and saying it the way I could never have. You express yourself very well. You said it perfectly and I agree 💯!!! 🇺🇲👍🏻👏👊
It's not reality if you're on SS income your van breaks down it's expensive, if there's dangerous bad weather you need to stay in a hotel very expensive, repairs are expensive, taking a daily shower is impossible you need a gym membership that's expensive,
it's better to rent a spare room than roam around putting yourself in danger especially true for older women.
Thanks Carol! Always appreciate your good Heart, good info, and keepin' it Real! Be Awesome and Be Well.🤗❤🙏

The people I know who do van life are such good planners. I’ve learned so much from them.
That is my goal. To have a place ehrrr women can stop amd rest. Wohld love to meet you one day😊
Really good advice my story is a little long, but let me say if you have a home that's paid for don't sell it save get you something to travel in with what you need but always keep your home base or save for a piece of land make sure it has water and power put a building with at least a nice bathroom and laundry room make sure there's no zoning so you can live in your van or RV or a tiny house. I made a huge mistake I'm now back in a house i bought but now i have payments when i could have been on easy street.
Having a home base is a wonderful luxury if possible.
Thank you for your honesty and wisdom The truth needs to be told before considering taking such a big leap…thank you!!
I just want people to go into making such a major decision with their eyes open.
Discrimination against older rvs at rv parks now - sad for rvers / you can't even sleep in your own vehicle on your own property or someone else's w-permission ... we keep losing our freedoms ... criminalizing houselessness ... despicable ... sorry to rant, this just triggered my thoughts ... great video
It is crazy that you can't even sleep in your vehicle on your own property!!

Hi Carol, I loved this video.
Oh, Carol, what a wonderful informative and truthful video! Thank you so much! And yes, more like this would be greatly appreciated!!
I absolutely agree. Getting stuck far from home is a horrible experience!
But, for some people, the van/RV IS their "home", and they have NO OTHER home, so being far away from "home" is a non-issue.
Maintenance --- oooooh my gosh .... YES.
My van home is ready for the graveyard ... and so is the house on my property. 🫤😳
Well you are a step ahead iofmany if you even have a property. Is it big enough that you could put up a shed on it and convert it into a tiny house?
Thank you for this video. This is great advice! Budgeting is always a big thing. I am looking to retire, but it will be a few more years unless we make some major adjustments! That is what we are doing now! Now, if food would stop going up weekly!
I have heard that WalMart is going to digital pricing so they can change orices asmt a moments notice. Or thry could even now raise prices during busy times of the day and go back to lower prices during off bours!
Excellent. Many have no common sense.
Thank God for
you...
Common sense with Wisdom, and understanding is needed in all things. Be Blessed in your sharing and time. Amen 🙏
More and more ibstacles for sure!
BIG THANK YOU!! GREAT INFORMATION 😊
I am not sure why youtube has popped several videos in my feed.
I am not a nomad. Have no plans to be a nomad.
However, your voice is so calm and reassuring, it seems like a nice life.
Don't know. But a lot of my videos have I found that applys across the board whether a nomad or not. Have a nice day.
I would love your insights on what you do to plan for places to boondock. Thank you for all your information!
I have broken down on the road too. Thankfully had extended toeing that allowed me to be towed 200 miles!!

That is a great idea. Why don't you start one!! I would but I already have too many irons in the fire 🤣
@@gloriouslifeonwheels3621 I’m really low tech, but I sure wish I had the know how to create/maintain such a list. I envision a golden girls & guys camp.
They have. It’s an app called hip camp.
There are nomad caravan groups for people who do not want to travel alone they can travel with a caravan.
This video is the best explanation and something I learned firsthand on the road for 4 years full time before buying a home base. Every person thinking about this lifestyle should see this! ❤
So glad to hear you find this video to he an accurate assessment of life on the road.
I don't mind the
Winter. I love the cold, but I don't know what I'd do if I had to go full time and survive the Summer. It's also a big concern when traveling with animals. If you get sick, who will care for your animals. So many things to think about. Nomad life is great, but there are many things to consider. Excellent subject Carol. ❤❤❤
The summer heat is absolutely not only the most challenging but also one of the most dangrrous aspects.of living in a vehicle.
Hou are so correct. Anyone hitting the road, fulltime or just on a road trip should be .properly prepared.
Sounds like you made a choice that worked for you for the period of time you needed it😊
Yes! Budgeting would be helpful.. For sure! Thank you. Blessings!
Thanks, thanks for an eye-opener; some things I'd thought about and some I hadn't. I've daydreamed about being on the road, this is a good dose of common sense.
Great advice for nomads and even for RV weekenders. Happy trails!
Great video. I think many people are forced into living in their vehicle because it is all they have. 😮
That is true and the numbers are growing.

Another great subject, Carol. Thanks for not sugar-coating van life. I believe you met Bob Welles of CheapRVliving. He has touched on a lot of your concerns.
Yes, I have met and spoke with Bob. He is a fountain of good information.
Your a better Bob. Thanks for the WHOLE truth about van life.
With crazy high gas and lodging, planning is even more crucial.
Truly excellent discussion. Budgeting, war chest, social connection--these must be the three legs to stand on. Keep spreading the good word.
Hello from the Westcoast of BC, Canada. Excellent information and reminders. A month in a one bedroom apartment where I live is still cheaper than campgrounds and buying wood for fires.
Good topic! Things mentioned love to see more info about: Overnight parking and Building the emergency fund for repairs and hotel.😊
I love watching everyone's video except when they cook and eat (not how to lesson videos). Who want to watch someone eat and bounce their head as its the best thing🤔....its a quick delete for me😂
