  • More and more seniors living on social security are having to face the hard reality that they will not be able to afford to live in traditional housing. Many are choosing to live as nomads in rvs, vans, campers, and even cars boondocking or camping in low cost campgrounds. Such was the case with Daryl, a 72 year old solo female who saw the handwriting on the wall and decided to take control of her destiny rather than leave her future in someone else's hands.
PLEASE NOTE: In the video introduction I indicated that Daryl decided to.move before being evicted. What was meant by that statement was before high rents forced her out. Daryl was not in the process of being legally evicted for those who may think that when seeing the video.
For many watching this video you may be facing the same situation Darryl found herself in. I hope this video offers you some information that will be helpful as you make whatever difficult choices you are facing and lets you know that you are not alone. Daryl told me that one of the reasons she agreed to do this video with me is that she wanted to encourage others who are facing losing the roof over their head and let them know that it is.possoble to be on the road and boondock like she is doing.
If you enjoy seeing these videos please hit that LIKE button to help me continue and let me know in the comments what you think about the choice Daryl made and if you may face a similiar situation.

This is such an important issue. Thank you for featuring these women who raised their children and their social security is so low they cannot afford to live. Shameful country sending our taxes to fund endless wars and to other countries. Daryl is lovely and has such a great attitude.

Sounds familiar! I turn 70 next week, and I knew I wouldn’t be able to afford rent once my daughter graduated high school. Financially, I’d be no better off in subsidized sr housing than I am on the road. So, I’ve been mostly boondocking / staying in free BLM or NFS campgrounds since July, and love it! My Odyssey minivan works well enough for my pup and I, but I do have a bucket potty and intermittent refrigeration. May the road rise to meet you!

I am only 63, but I have to admit that this would totally frighten me. I need a toilet so often and , without a good guard dog of a goodly size, I would live in fear. And, as cold natured as I am, I would have a hard time staying warm enough. If it is hot, I can't sleep. If my feet are cold, I can't sleep. And, as many times as I tried, I can't sleep on inflatable mattresses. I would be miserable. I am so in awe of Daryl. May God protect her

One thing I’ve done every morning is make sure that I’m able to touch my toes, then slide on underwear & jeans while standing on one leg. Decades ago I read that balance is the most importance in staying young & fit. Also, strengthening & posture exercisers 10-15 minutes a day really does pay off.

I lived this way for a short time in my 20s when I was on between jobs. The only thing i was free from was comfort and security. A bedroom, a toilet, running water and temperature contols are simply the minimums we should be able to expect when you're an old woman or man. Our culture is really pathetic.

@@infiniteinfinity9802 I am not criticizing that woman. I am condemning to eternal shame the sick American culture where its most vulnerable seniors are gathering in car camps for moral and material support, living in their metal and plastic vehicles with no amenities to make them comfortable and keep them healthy because corporate greedsters have priced them out of existence in their communities. “Happiness” is relative to the misery of seeing tax and insurance and rent bills appearing in your mailbox knowing you can’t pay them. Running away in an old car with a foam bed, blankets and plastic storage containers to a homeless status will be her last freedom. Is this the country you want to live in? The one where old people are starved out of their homes and are putting themselves on the cold or hot road rather than be safe in an indoors home they can depend on? That’s such a big American lie about what ‘freedom’ is. And I have no doubt she and some of the rest of them when put in front of the camera are cheered about it when you feature them as fierce and happy in their little beat up cars. Excuse me for my empathy. I fear that they will freeze to death or die of heat stroke because they’ve been led to believe in the ‘fierce and happy’ expectation they are modeling for other desperate seniors that the sick American society is spitting out in disgust. The irony is unbelievable. On one hand you cheer the newly homeless in their ‘car camp’ life and then you all do a 180 and cringe at the cities overwhelmed with car camps everywhere. Pathetic.

One of the perks of being a vegetarian and living out of your car, is that you don't need refrigeration to keep your food in. Fresh vegetables, fruits and breads will keep for many days, and coffee, tea, olive oil, ghee, nuts, seeds, herbs, spices and grains will keep indefinitely. Of course, there is always canned meats for non-vegetarians. It helps to have a source for ice close by, however, if you need it.

Carol, great interview and Daryl great story. I know there are a lot of people who can’t understand how someone can live in a van. I lived 14 years in a truck, yes working and driving the country to deliver and pick up loads. Still stayed in places that a lot of people didn’t like. I always moved if I didn’t feel safe. I will be 70 in April and miss being on the road. My husband and I are working on a mini bus now so we can travel. He will be 76 on the 30 of this month. We have only been married for the last 8 years. But have both always wanted to travel. Me not having someone tell me where to go or when to get there. Lol. There’s always been an extravagant amount spent on military contracts. If they could funnel just 2% of that into affordable housing, we’d be way ahead of any other country as far as quality of life, & still maintain a kick ass military.

No one should have to pay more than a third of their take home income on housing. It makes me sad to see this but I’m glad she is happy at the moment. We are seeing this happening to many of our elderly! I for one own a home paid off, but as I age, noticing that 6 bedroom, 3 level house and even if only 1 acre it's getting to be to much for me to maintain! I did OTR EXPEDITE for 11 yrs and do have an idea of living in it full time so thinking of doing it! Only thing I will truly miss is my garden, canning of veg, and canning jams, I make for family and friends as gifts!!

6 bedrooms, 3 levels, 1 acre, that's like a palace to most Brits! Why can't you rent out the upper levels and live on the ground floor?

@@radicalcartoons2766this house was 1st built in 1846, and 2nd part built in 1896. Indoor plumbing added around 1930 putting only 1 bathroom on main floor! Turning into 5 bedroom upstairs and 1 bedroom downstairs! We have updated the Electrical and plumbing to bring that up to code! The cost to totally remodel to what I would want is around $75,000 - $100,000!! And now could go up to $125,000!!

What a thoughtful interview. You have such a fine sense for poignant subjects in today's economy. Compare your interaction with Daryl to some host of a network business program interviewing a hedge fund manager. Daryl is looking within herself for strength and reaching out to make friends for happiness, while the millionaire Wall Street tycoon is showing his displeasure with how the government and political rivals are treating him.

Thank you for your gracious comment. It is so easy to get caught up in meaningless distractions. Sometimes it is necessary to simply address the most basic needs that connect us, shelter and a sense of community and belonging.

What choice does she have? You can be happy or depressed! Everyone deserves a home! What away to spend your golden years. Only in America!

Why is everyone saying only in America....about everything? They make it seem worse than other worse places. I lived in Italy for many years and came back to the USA and would NEVER live in Italy again....
