    I've had several soundbars and a surround sound package but it was only when I purchased an budget AVR and a pair of budget stereo speakers that I realised what I had been missing (stereo imaging, thumping base) besides going down this route one can always add to it overtime! subwoofer, surround speakers you could even get height speakers to get the full 'non-virtual' Dolby Atmos experience. Nowadays AVRs are so simple to setup, they even walk you through the process!

    Rather contradictory that the truly convincing surround sound bars have proper rear speakers yet manufacturers claim that you dont need rear speakers with their 2.1 or 3.1.2 channel soundbars, but will sell you pricey optional rear ones if you want them, which they claim you don't need in the first place🤣

    Most soundbars below $400, you might as well buy $200-300 2.1ch computer speakers with Bluetooth and two-way main speakers ( tweeter and woofer), and connect to the headphone jack on the TV and use the TV's virtual surround. You'll get about the same sound or maybe better in some cases, plus you can create a proper stereo field by being able to separate the left and right speakers distance appropriately.

    It's more complicated than at first sight. First of all yes boucing of sound on hard surfaces does play an element in some soundbars but not all. Also bouncing by itself can nowhere account for the perceived effect. The principle is heavily dependant on digital signal processing. In the end you only have two eardrums and they have no idea of which direction the sound comes from. That arises from the soundprofile and difference between the sound reaching left and right ear. It's not only how loud but also frequency response and perhaps even timing is different because of the shape of your ear. That is also the reason why you can hear surround in good quality headphones.
    Of course all this comes with some limitations. First of all is how to shape the sound so that your ears (your brain actually) perceives sound as comming from a specific direction - that is difficult with lots of air in between. That also requires you to sit relatively on axis to the soundbars. And then everybodys ears are slightly different.
    That said I think the best systems are very good. Even a tablet I saw in a store some years ago which had an Atmos demo video. Sounds comming from all directions and very convincing. Nothing to bounce sounds of there.
    But also algorithms evolves with experience and processing power. Many years ago I had a Sennheiser DSP Pro headphone amplifier with Dolby Surround - An expensive piece of crap that just enriched it a little but no really convincing effects and the amplifier chips was noisy as hell. Then some years later I bought a Victor (JVC) SU-DH1 accepting a digital input. Much better in every way. Not quite like a real 5.1 setup but none the less without question much better than a regular downmixed stereo signal.

    Been buying Bose headphones and sound bars when I stopped using individual speaker setups. Bose are great with exceptional sound quality…what can i say…

      Yeah, I agree! I'm thinking of just using my 2 Bose s1 pros for my TV. The only thing that I won't have surround sound. But there is no way in hell any soundbar could match the quality of the s1 pros, even though they are meant for live sound applications.

    Hi, is the samsung q800b worth to buy for surround sound ? Please help... I return the jbl bar 2.1 deep bass because it has no surround sound

    • @jeffallinson8089
      @jeffallinson8089 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have owned one for a couple of weeks and I love it. Atmos content is really immersive and the thumping bass really impressive and the clarity of the Q800b is natural when it has to be and very powerful when it needs to be. No it doesn't provide surround sound in the truest sense because you need rear speakers for that but the good news is they are available for the Q800b for about £200 in the UK and I am getting them very soon. All in all I am delighted with the Q800B and it is definitely worth the money.

    I'm curious how these wireless systems such as Samsung HW-Q910B/ZA 9.1.2 Channel Soundbar compare to the old school wired home theater 5.1 setups.

    • @SmittyAZ
      @SmittyAZ ปีที่แล้ว

      Still, not even close to a proper surround setup.

    • @Steve30x
      @Steve30x ปีที่แล้ว

      Even a $2,000 soundbar won't come close to a cheap home theatre system. If you sat down and listened to a Q990B and a dolby atmos system with floor standing speakers , center channel , rear speakers and up firing atmos speakers on the front speakers that costs less than the soundbar. You will see the seperation in the different speakers is far wider than the Q990B.
      I've recently heard a Q990B in my brother in laws house and I'm used to a 5.1 system and my brother has a true Atmos system. I could tell that with the Q990B that there was no front left and right speakers. It sounded like there was just a center channel speaker at the front with a pair of surround speakers.

    I want to configure a home theater and think wired or wireless. My interests are action movies, PlayStation, I love Dolby Atmos and the bass sound coming out of the subwoofer. I think about Onkyo with Polk headphones, do you think it is better than wireless audio systems, even if it's Sonos

    Sorry but you are incorrect. My £600 LG soundbar with the large woofer is simply amazing. The sounds like being in a cinema with deep rich sound and the effects.
    You are obviously not in my room when a Dolby Atmos film is on, otherwise you would not make such incorrect statements.
    The sound from the upspeakers bounce off the roof and the left and right speakers are fantastic. The base is amazing.
    Sorry but you putting people off purchasing an amazing soundbar.

      If we are talking about bose soundbars, it's not been doing this for years. It only started with the Bose 900 in 2022. For years bose was adamant about producing soundbars that support Dolby Atmos and DTSx sound formats. Bose convinced the market that the true surround in their soundbars Bose 500 and 700 was as good as object based sound until they felt a punch from Samsung q90r and the successor q950t. So for the first time in a longtime, Bose company became flexible and included upfiring speakers on the bose900. It can pair with the Bose surround speakers 700 though they don't have up firing drivers. Bose may be good in expressing Dolby Atmos with traditional home theaters systems, and truthfully it's been doing that for years. But when it comes to sound bars it's facing a tight competition with rival soundbar brands that are as much versatile such as Samsung's flagships, Sono arc, ambeo sennheiser, etc.

      Give up. You are stuck in your ways. You probably don't keep up with how much soundbars have improved. Not everybody wants their entire living room dominated by speakers. Systems like the q950a or q990b are awesome systems and if you aren't closeminded you will be very impressed for the price they costs. It has rear speakers and sub. And provides a great soundstage

      Back when I got my TV soundbars were still bad. I thought I'd get one at some point. Skip 3 years and now they're pretty amazing. Still have a few restrictions compared to real speakers in those places, but my Samsung Q990B that ai recently bought is amazing overal. The sound bouncing is okayish (don't have an optimal room for it), but the quality of the sound and clarity are amazing.
