- I've had my eye on hardshell/clamshell roof top tents for a while but the prices have always been over my budget. While perusing Amazon on black Friday I saw this tent pop up for $999 with free shipping. The seller had zero reviews but I figured I'd roll the dice. The tent arrived in less than a week and appears to be pretty well built.
After a closer look, the tracks in the top are also aluminum.
Stay tuned in the coming months for mounting on my F150 and first trips.

Thanks for the review. I ordered on of these because of your review. I sold my smittybuilt too much hastle to set up and down. hopefully this one is a lot quicker, it sure looks that way. thanks
Thanks for your comments. I completely agree. I have a very good friend that I go camping with who has a smittybuilt and while it's a roomy tent it does require more time to set up and take down. And packing up can take a while especially with wind. And...not all that aerodynamic. Enjoy the new RTT!
I was wondering how much height it adds to your vehicle with the tent and the metal rails of the tent. Need it to be less than 7.5 inches to fit through my garage door.

Just the video I needed to come across, thanks for posting it. I took the gamble and ordered one of these last week. Have you taken it out yet? How does it hold up?
Thanks. Haven't used it yet, still am in the process of setting up the rack on my F150. I think the majority of these are built in the same factories in China just labeled differently. There are of course companies in the US that build from scratch but they are two to four times the cost. I figured I'd give this a try first and then upgrade later if need be.

Can you measure the mattress, please. Length and width. I ordered the same tent but can already tell I’m going to replace the mattress with a self inflating air mattress. Thanks.

Thanks for your comments. This one was a generic unit that was unbranded. Just luck of the draw on these.
You said the top slotted section is plastic? Do you think this would still support a cross bar setup like other clamshell tents? Do you think the tent would have issues opening with some weight on cross bars also?
It's actually metal/aluminum. I thought it was plastic, but it's coated with a moderately thick paint. Pretty solid stuff.

Awesome. It's a cool RTT. The only additional poles I got were for the rain fly at the entrance.

If roof top tent business people got ahold of this tent, it would have been logo-ed and listed it for $2700 claiming its there build product. Glad you got it in perfect timing.

Thanks for video. did it come with any cross bar? How about any hardware to attach it to cross bars? Do you know how many crossbars are needed?
No cross bars were included. I bought a large rack mount for the truck bed. I hope to do a follow up video soon on the RTT all mounted.

Well they never delivered mine. Apparently it was never even shipped but for the month the sos company took the money from the credit card but never even shipped it. Oh well guess it was not for me.

It's a pretty solid unit. I did find a spot or two where the aluminum tracks were about 1/8 to 1/16 out from the corner joints so to keep water from weeping in I silicon caulked these areas. This was the seller. @@drez20001, thanks for sharing your experience. Your tent looks slightly different from other amazon buyers, but it looks very nice and matching. The rain flyer in the rear is compared with the tent even though the picture in the advertisement is brighter (i mean silver). The ladder is black instead of silver. And the texture of the mattress is excellent. The other brand is flat and has no surface on it. I hope the price will go down again. I would buy it instead of another brand.
Did it have the elastic band that pulls the tent in when it closes?
Yes, it have the elastic band, I shared a lot of videos about this tent, it's so cool
Have you taken this tent out yet? How does it stand up to the weather??
Not yet. Had plans to go camping this past weekend but had a few things come up. I have spent time in it (napping a bit) in the driveway but that's it really. Hopefully in the next month or so we'll actually use it.

The sleeping area would depend on how you sleep actually. If feet toward the front angle, which is how I intend to use it, it feels bigger. The base is 7' long.

This tent was a generic model I stumbled onto on black Friday of last year. Not sure if the seller is still offering them.

It was a no name generic unit that was bargain priced but works fine. Still have it on the truck.

The prices go up and down a lot for all of these and most are made in the same few factories. The price for this one has gone back up.

130-ish lbs
I haven't weighed this one officially. I'd guess in the 140+/- pound range. A two person job (three would help) to get it on the truck.

Being black,,I'd guess that it will be hotter than hell,,,above about 45 degrees,,because at that price im sure that frabic has no light reflective technology
how thick is it when its closed?
About 7 inches. Pretty thin.
