    Buying a roof top tent is a large investment. I wanted to create a video walking through 3 of the most popular styles of hard shell roof top tents and give you some of my thoughts, but also things to think about when selecting one to purchase. We stop by Modula Racks and chat with Ryan about the Roofnest line up of tents, the Falcon Pro, the Condor Overland, and the Sparrow. This is my Hardshell roof top tent 2022 buyer's guide.

    Thanks You for a great review. I'm planning on getting a rooftent and this video showed a lot of things to consider on hardshells. Condor would definately be the choice IF I was to use that much money into it. So far had some good experiences of a soft top ARB Flinders as a rental.

    Thanks for video, didn't even consider most of these points. Another point I realized is that soft tops have a more 360 degree view, whereas hardtop don't because of obvious reason. Great, going with a soft top anyway, but was an eye opening video.

    Thanks for a great comparative overview. I've been going back and forth between iKamper and RoofNest. I'm 6'7" and looking for the most sleeping length. The more upright back shell of the Condor Overland seems like a better fit for me... It would be going on a Jeep Grand Cherokee so I'd need to upgrade my roof rack system from OEM. Thanks!!

    Love this video! I just got back from an ocean to ocean drive from Nj to Vancouver! I did it in two weeks staying in White Rock with my fam for 7 days! It was me and my two boys in our Wrangler with our old first generation Tepui Kukenam which we have loved for years. But driving 15 hours a day the set-up time and break down time was a LOT. We got to fit in 4 National parks as well but. I came home rethinking my Rig. My fuel bill was INSANE too so I’d think these would also help with that my 2014 Dragon got 11 miles to the gallon😱
    The only other thing I wish I got to see in Vancouver was that Volvo!! That thing is incredible!!!

    For me, I enjoy the traditional feel and style of conventional camping. Albeit, it's on a roof, but that's about as different as it gets. So it's a soft shell tent for me. I could never justify the outrageous cost of hard shell tents. Paying upwards or 4-5k for a couple of slabs of aluminum coverings is crazy. Most of the canvas material you'll find is about the same across the board. In addition to insulated floorings (which I could live without) and diamond plated bases, the majority of the cost comes from the aluminum hard shells (again, something I can definitely live without). This is just my opinion. Thanks for the vid!

  • @darksideemt

    Just a PSA for those that don't know, DO NOT put those type of ladders (when he was putting up the first tent) at that much of an angle. They are made to be almost straight up and will collapse if they are extended like he had it for a high tent and you put much weight on them. I definitely like the style you have and want to upgrade my soft shell tent to your style of tent.

    • @Casey250
      @Casey250  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      70 degrees is the recommended angle. I've used my RTT countless times in the last year and never had any issues with ladders at less steep angles and as seen the ladder didn't collapse on Ryan when he climbed it in the video. They are quite resilient but you can bend them. They will bend before they just fall apart on you, but i've used them at all kinds of angles with out any issue. However, Roofnest recommends 70 degrees. in their documentation.

    • @darksideemt
      @darksideemt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Casey250 it was just for folks that don't know and might be bigger in size. I've seen several vids of them collapsing because they had them out too much and just wanted to pass it on. The tent you have is really nice.

    Hardtops have some important advantages: They are not fumbly at all compared to the tents and they can be closed even if it rained - close a wet tent, yeah well, good luck with that. But in general: there are hardshells and hardshells, there are vehicules and others and there are other people.

    Perhaps i missed it in the Video. But there is a disadvantage of the flip over tent. In Germany (and other European countries as well) you are not allowed to build up a tent which footprint is larger then the footprint of the car if you would like to „wild“ camp or staying on a parking lot. (Of course you can, but that’s the official statement). If the outline isn’t bigger than the cars.. fine and legal. (On campgrounds you can open and set up as much as you want of course).

    I’m always interested why none of these rooftop tent people talk about condensation. Not just under the mattress pad but the whole unit. Or how they deal with the wet coast and rain a good deal of the time. Talking to real users serious issues of mould and impossible to dry the tent out. As you can’t pull the thing into your garage and open the tent. And since they are heavy as crap you can’t just take it off and dry in your garage.

    • @Casey250
      @Casey250  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe ill do something around that. The less air flow and tents with out a fly, will make more condensation in the cooler wetter weather inside. You can run a heater to help with this. As for drying it after a trip, ive left my tent for a week in cold weather when its wet before drying it out. I try not to go too long. If i have to with a streak of bad weather ill open it even in the rain, put a heater in, dry the inside, then close up. Repeat ever 4 or 5 days until there is a sunny day to dry it and close it.

    Those things are just that, little things. Not deal breakers man. You don't complain about splitting wood before you can burn it do you?
    No. Of course not.

    Not you too Casey! Resorting to the CHEESY/CLICKBAIT "don't buy this before watching this video" TH-cam headlines.

    • @Casey250
      @Casey250  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It isn't click bait, It is is a title relative to the video, that is built for the current state of how TH-cam assesses and promotes videos.
      I put dozens of hours and tons of money into videos, only to have TH-cam not promote them to a wider audience if I don't use attractive titles. Now ultimately my goal isn't to make videos just to get views but, the more views and the bigger audience I have, the more capability to bring in revenue I have, which pays the bills so that I can make these videos.
      Its kind of like asking a business not to use attractive marketing techniques and limit their ability to grow and survive. Sorry, this just how TH-cam is right now with title preference.

      @@Casey250 Great, informative video and the title works. No one should buy something like this prior to watching a video like this. Money doesn't grow on trees and I want to be fairly sure I'll be happy with my purchase prior to actually making the purchase. Thanks and keep up the good work!

    DO NOT BUY ROOFNEST. The quality is shit.. I have had my sparrow xl top cave in on me.. they replaced the top months later got a crack on the fiber glass shell... they told me to jb weld it, i did that... 1 month out of warranty more cracks in the shell and the clear coat is peeling.. Water got in and caused mold to grow on my mattress, blankets, sheets and pillows.
    Contacted Roofnest and 'all they can offer' me is 1000$ of a new tent when ive had mine for barely 2 years lol.. I am getting lawyer involved if you research online hundreds of people with the same manufacture defects.. Roofnest is expensive for nothing, and customer service is even worse.

    2 weeks to do that,
    You will do it quicker,
    The old tele track is rough as,
    If you don't want to wreck your ute, avoid it,
    From Bramwell station to Pusan Bay is only a days driv via the Falls
    If the rain is coming in,
    Go up inland, Atherton, to Lakeland, Bramwell station, Elliot falls, Pusan Bay,
    On the way home, change it around, & come down via the lions den & the ocean road,
    It will give time for the creeks to settle,
    Just my apinion,
    Enjoy your trip
