This is one of my saved videos for down the road! I took apart my tilt steering to fix the sloppy bolts. Upon putting it back together the little actuator fell off and didn’t know how to place it back on! You’re a legit guy for this video! Thank you sir!

Thank you for creating this! I have a monte SS same year as your truck. My high low beam has been slowly seizing up and need to tear it open to see what's going on. This video helps me see a lot of what I'm getting into. Thank you!

I appreciate you making this video. Started off just replacing the ignition switch which led to the turn signal switch and this “actuator” is the current hold up. Apparently someone has already been in there and broke a piece of that actuator off and it wouldn’t stay in position; didn’t think to use the grease trick.

Thank You! I dropped the column to change ignition switch. The dimmer switch mounts on top the ignition switch. The Hi/Low actuator slid down and out. I couldn't feed it back up and find the hole. Removing the small plastic cover without totally destroying it, I could see proper placement without pulling the steering wheel. You saved me a lot of unnecessary disassembly.
    Thank You Sir! 11/2020

I guess the hi/lo beam switch on the floor down by the emergency brake pedal was just too convenient and GM felt like they had to eliminate the weekend/backyard mechanic if possible and in the process use the cheapest, most fail prone plastic they could find. The two legged stool samples who designed this and their superiors who okayed this should all be fired and the people who hired them fired as well as the people who hired the people who hired the people who okayed and designed this and just keep firing people until you get to the root of the problem. For those of us who are too scared or don't have the skill set to try to fix this themselves and don't want to be stuck at home with a truck that can't be driven, it is not a good scenario. I hate going to the auto repair shop because it is always waaaay to expensive and takes waaaay too long. Thanks for the video and next time bring us better news. :-) It is helpful.

i took my 96 vette under the dash panel off. to get to the actual high/low beam switch. thats there the rods go down into to activate the switch. i can just barely reach it with my hand, feeling around it i found the rod, i can push it a bit but it wont click, if i put my other hand around to be over my head i can reach the handle by the steering wheel. activating both of them at the same time lets it click. i havent gone father into it yet. i read online that i can be adjusted, but maybe just needs lube as suggested here. ill find out tomorrow when the sun is back up again to let me see properly.

I had to replace my turn signal arm due to it snapping off inside of its holder and everything went smoothly and not a big deal. Only problem is once I was done my high beams don’t work snd it turns out that I am missing the plastic arm that connects the turn signal arm to the actual high beam actuator. By any chance do you know where I could find one online because I have had no luck finding one or a good parts diagram

    Thanks for the explanation.
I am having the same problem.
My car is a 1979 Monte Carlo. I was replacing the dimmer switch and the rod just fell out . So now, I can't use my high beams. But at least the headlights work now.
I guess it looks like i have to disassemble my steering wheel to put the rod back in, so that way I can use my brights again.

@HorsepowerHouse got my lights off highbeams, may need to replace switch its gross feeling and took a min for me to get switched to low beams. Also that cover on the back that needs to be there, is there something else that is suppose to secure it or to it? It's moving around after putting it back on, didn't seem like I destroy it or anything. Any ideas?

Just spent over an hour trying figure out what I was not doing right. I could have had the whole job done in less than 2 hours if not for this stupid "actuator". My 91 S10 is a great vehicle but they definitely were still in the stone age with this dimmer. Nice idea for the grease. I was trying to think of anything else that could hold it especially since there is a lot of bumping and shaking to get the 2 pieces of plastic back together right without breaking something.

So when I turn on my headlights they have to be on low beam. If I click my switch to hi beam, I lose everything except my parking lights! Is the switch on the steering column the most likely culprit?

    • @HorsepowerHouse

I just came from mechanic he said it'll be $150 or $250. When I got there he said he has to put the cover on and that other side part and it won't work $350. Because he's not an electrician he said. I opted out of that trap seeming to be scamming. Everything working but highlights breaking light inspection after hit and run disaster.. caught driver $3,000 settlement but listed total $3,800 GMC 94 6.5 turbo diesel pickup truck SLE

I bought a 94 chevy silverado a couple of years ago and I am trying to fix my high beams. It is missing the plastic cover you mentioned in your video but not only that, it is also missing the whole metal rod that actually activates the high beams. Seems like it is gonna take a ton of research and generally gonna be a pain in the ass. Not alot of videos that cover this subject. Wish me luck
