I'm so glad that you like Taiwan! I think it's one of the most underated countries that sometimes is not on the radar of most travellers. I enjoy the people there a lot, who are among the most friendliest I've met, and it feels so safe as a female traveller. It might not have the best beach, or the cheapest accomodations, or the most luxurious experience, but I like that it's a happy medium of all areas. As for your food and drink question, my understanding is that each restaurant has their own specialities. As a result, locals order the restaurant's specialities, which are usually either food or drink, and not both, then move onto other places for Round 2, 3, or even 4 :)

Secret to the Taiwanese food: fresh ingredients. They use organic produce and meats unlike our frozen foods.

amazing! love taiwan, beautiful country! i think the restaurants usually have soup instead of beverage. But there's gotta be drinks/iced black tea at most lunch or bento places

Hi, I'm a Taiwanese trying to answer your question. Some restaurants do serve beverages, such as hot pot restaurants. The dumpling restaurant (八方雲集) where you got the question actually serves soy milk as beverages. Usually restaurants provide water or tea for free, so we don't need to order a beverage. Moreover, habitually we might order a hot soup rather than a cold beverage in a restaurant. If we want a beverage, we usually buy it at a bubble tea shop or convenience store before or after a meal. If it's a relatively formal restaurant where you dine for longer than one hour, usually it servers beverages. I hope my answer is helpful. In short, we usually have free water, free tea, or hot soups to replace cold beverages, and we can buy a beverage after the meal too.

I'm the Taiwanese again and I'm trying to answer the question from other ways. We usually dine at a dumping restaurant for like twenty minutes or less, so we don't really need to order a beverage. If we need to dine for an hour or longer in a restaurant, then we might need a beverage more. Second, we usually separate cold drinks from hot food. So habitually we don't order a cold drink in a restaurant. We do enjoy a cold drink with hot food at McDonald's or Western restaurants and the like, but usually not at traditional local small restaurants. I usually just drink free water provided by the restaurant, of a bottle of water from my own backpack.

If you see someone carry a bottle or umbrella on the backpack, he could be Taiwanese.
