    Gotta agree on the head part, I never push mine hard up a hill and keep an eye on the EGTs plus water temps plus reco injectors will also help with EGTs as it will burn better too.

    Wow! That's an AMC head too. Apparently designed more heavy duty than the OEM Toyota head better for Aussie driving conditions?
    That pitting in the cylinder head shown @ 4:20... mine has exactly that on cylinder 4. Looks like a piece of metal has been smashed around in there and eventually melted into a blob on the piston (probably the tip of an old glow plug). Interesting to see it on other engines!

    Great video, Thank you. I had a AMC fitted a few years ago due to cracking, but experiencing coolant loss again. What is a safe max coolant temp and EGT? (pyro mounted in exhaust manifold pre turbo)

    • @dingeldiy
      @dingeldiy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      safe max temp of coolant will be listed on the coolant bottle but I'd say safe max is 105 celsius and if it gets to 110 things may get out of hand quickly if it gets any higher. As for EGT's my alarm is set to 650 degrees and I never like to seem them above 700

    Thnx very much 😊but i have a question i cracked my cylinder head of 1kz but after i replaced it it lost it power and now it releasing black smoke when it is in 2 rpm
    😊

    • @dingeldiy
      @dingeldiy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like a fueling or timing issue. Black smoke means too much fuel or incomplete combustion. Start by checking your timing and monitoring your fuel use.

      I've made a video about cooling and supporting mods for the 1 KZ here: th-cam.com/video/CmYLsz9RwuQ/w-d-xo.html

  • @35jdub
    @35jdub ปีที่แล้ว

    Question on the cracked heads: on the most common crack locations, does it usually still result in enough coolant loss to create constant white smoke out the exhaust? I've flushed my systems once and refilled, been a month or so and still my coolant reservoir gets low after a few days. No temp issues or white smoke, though, so not sure what's up. But it drives me pretty crazy so I'm on the brink of ordering a new head altogether and just swapping it. But not excited about having to possibly spend that kind of money unless I have to. Any insight would be helpful! Thank ya

    • @dingeldiy
      @dingeldiy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's hard to say. It might be worth getting the problem diagnosed by a mechanic first. I think it is possible to burn some coolant without noticing white smoke.

    • @35jdub
      @35jdub ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dingeldiyI went ahead and ordered a head replacement kit. Gonna knock out a new turbo, new glows and new injectors, as well. EGR delete, too. Hoping this fixes my issue
      I did have a question though: if I hand rotate the crank and hear some piston rattle or see some wear on the cylinder walls and need to change the rings, can I do that without pulling the motor? Could I just drop the pan, unbolt the rod shackle, and then push the pistons out the top?

    • @dingeldiy
      @dingeldiy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@35jdub short answer is yes.
      Should be a stout engine after all of that work. Throw some cooling mods and sensors at it and it will last forever.
      Might as well do the injection pump while you're at it. Especially if it's got more than 250,000kms in it

    Hi I have just replaced the head on my 1kz surf done less than 1000km and I am picking it has overheated while my daughter has been driving it and she hasnt noticed, it was running sweet but losing a massive amount of coolant out the exhaust Im talking 2 litres in 10 minutes, but still idling nicely. So I took the new head off and cannot see any cracks, interestingly the head bolts were reasonably loose, the head gasket looks good. My question is can the head crack internally, but it would have o be a big crack.

    • @dingeldiy
      @dingeldiy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The only way coolant will get in the exhaust is if the head or head gasket are damaged/warped or not seated properly.
      check your cylinder head is not warped. Have a good look for cracks and if its all good i'd say the head wasn't tight enough. If the head bolts were loose there should be other signs of leaks other than coolant in the exhaust.

    Hey mate loving all the videos so far, im new to trucks and honestly it was like striking gold finding your channel. I have the resources around me to do almost any job DIY even an engine tear down and rebuild (great videos on that btw) and i will get around to it all but! My 1kz TE just hit 299k and i am sweating BULLETS about when the head is gonna crack. Have been asking around about things that i can do before the fact to either lessen the blow or avoid it all together but nobody seems to have a straight answer!
    So, in your mind whats my list of priorities? do i replace cooling system and injectors to try and avoid the crack? Do i order a new cylinder head and kit and just wait for it to go and then replace it as soon as it does...?
    Im not too scared to tackle the big jobs at home with mates , we just dont know where to start, need an expert's input haha
    Any advice would be much appreciated matey.
