    In order to make your decal fix solution go further, water can be used instead to remove the transfers from the backing paper. Painting the decal fix on the kit and the decal after application will give the same result

    I like these Humbrol tutorials - they are short and well detailed without a lot of long-winded explanations which, at times I find to be a bit confusing with regard to the process that is being explained.

    Decal fix and matt varnish are the two things that have been most useful for me so far in modelling, well worth the price :)

  • @Cerbera82
    @Cerbera82 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Its worth noting that while decalfix softens the decal nicely, it also leaves a glossy finish when dry. I discovered this today after applying decalfix to my spitfire that was painted matt. I had to re-cover the whole model in matt varnish as the decalfix left glossy patches on and around the decals. I dont think ill use it again on matt finishes.

    Ensure that Humbrol Gloss Cote is well stirred before using on your model. Humbrol Clear can be used directly through an airbrush without thinning or with a brush. Due to its nature, Humbrol Clear self-levels which is ideal for applying details. Humbrol Clear is a high gloss varnish that becomes glossier with every coat.

      Damn, I know it's a ten years old video but I wish I'd known that before buying a bottle, should have checked for a tutorial before buying it I guess. For the last couple days I was wondering why the decalfix had immediately removed several coats of paint when I applied it on a kit painted with Tamiya... 😅 Too bad, it's seems like a nice product anyway, but it's back to warm water for me !

    Decalfix has similar property’s to varnishes. Try diluting Decalfix with water when you apply the decal, alternatively you could apply the decal on to a gloss surface, but again you will need to dilute Decalfix with water.

    Hey! I am very very far from UK but i have a question (maybe more). I have been using Humbrol enamels and i bought the gloss cote. I use over a transparent windshield of a model and it went "dull" (opaque). After seeing the video on the clear i got the doubt: It seens to me that clear is very thin while the Gloss Cote is very thick. What kind of uses should i do for the 2?
    By the way there is no clear for sale on the distributor... Ebay worldwide i guess....

    What they don't mention is the stain Humbrol Decalfix leaves around the decal 2:30 - 2:45. I've found this happens no matter how much of the excess I wipe off. Anyone else have this occur? I've gone back to a coat of Klear ,then Microset/Microsol and then another coat of Klear or a satin/matt varnish as appropriate. More hassle but no stains.

    I've been using Humbrol Clear and Decalfix together.. and they really don't play nicely together.. the Decalfix almost instantly starts to react with the Clear, making it tacky..which makes laying on of decals an absolute nightmare! Seriously it works nothing like is described in this video..

      @MechaNick767 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. I´ve tried using Decalfix on one of my models and the liquid just wouldn´t be removed and now those areas are basiclly not good at all. I might just stick to water and then get some other set and sol product.

    • @swampeh
      @swampeh 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Synthetic Alloy yeah I've been chatting about this with some folks on a FB modelling group I'm a part of and several of them have noted the same thing. The problem is that both Humbrol Clear and Decalfix are Ammonia based, so they react with each other. I note this is mentioned almost in passing in this video (but not on the Humbrol website product page nor on the bottle!), and they recommend to water down the Decalfix when using with Humbrol Clear, but of course they give no dilution ratio!.
      So I gave it a try tonight with a 50/50 dilution with water.. I soaked the decals in the solution to release and applied to the Clear coated model, and it was MUCH MUCH easier! There wasn't the instant reaction and associated tackiness, and the decals did glide as in this video! More importantly the coated surface wasn't ruined!
      However, whether the decals draw down as well as they do with neat Decalfix remains to be seen.. they certainly havent wrinkled up as much as they did previously, but I'll leave overnight and see how they are in the morning!

    • @swampeh
      @swampeh 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Number1Ash 50/50 DF/Water dilution certainly made it easier to apply the decals and it didn't attack the Humbrol Clear surface. However it was a lot slower at "drawing in" the decals, after they'd been on a while I ended up gently coating with some Microsol I had kicking about, and that finished them off nicely. I tried a 75/25 DF/Water mix as well.. and that affected the clear almost as badly as when neat. Pretty poor when all said and done imo..

    • @MechaNick767
      @MechaNick767 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, after using Clear and then after it dried I didn´t have the same problem with Decalfix as befor. Looks good and works perfectlly even when I didn´t dilut it.

      Republic thunderstreak Trown many of my old models out, just because of this problem. Worse part is, there is no company that sells loose decals! So you are forced to buy another set just to get those darned decals again!

      SIG442 It is not necessary to dustbin old kits. Furthermore, they can be really useful testbeds to test with new modeling techniques (besides the fact that it is more humanitarian to restore them than getting rid of them- to be honest, I feel bad for those old kits that I cannot restore because they are too damaged or missing too many pieces). I myself have saved a number of old kits from scrap by providing them with a second and much better identity.
      For my next restoration on an old kit, I might try and apply what I learned from this video to the decals part, rather than "risking" a brand new kit.
      There are some companies that sell decals sheets, but I cannot recall their names now. In any case, it is a good idea to store spare and unneeded decals (and pieces) for other models. Regards.

      Alan the leopard Not everyone has Dutch decals, which makes it rather a hell to search for them.US, UK, Russian decals? No problem! But Dutch decals are hardly out there and when they are, they cost a lot more then any other nation decals. :(

    I know for sure that they just used micro set and sol for this video... The real deal would just eat up and ruin the varnish coat under the decal...

    This stuff just instantly ate its way through two coats of Future Clear. So, be mindful of that.
