- This is the first of four Humbrol Weathering Powder videos. Learn how to use Humbrol Weathering Powders using exciting Humbrol products in several easy steps.
Kit used is the new Airfix 1:48 scale Land Rover Snatch. The model was painted using Humbrol Acrylic paint.

All paint used in this video is Humbrol Acrylic. Providing you allow the paint to fully dry before applying Enamel Thinners you will be ok. If you were to scrub Enamel Thinners on Acrylic paint then this will start to effect it. As seen in another video.

hi just wondered how this might be applied to and model train or wagon as had a go but didnt quite work have reorted to apply the powders direct then use spray varnish to seal them but it very messy any tips ????

i won IPMS Cyprus Humbrol Prize(i won 12 brushes and the work station and the cutting mat) but the paint slots cannot be fitted with GW paints:(
how are these powders different from normal pigments used in acrylic and oil paint?
These pigments look good but, there appears to be problems getting them into shops and some retailers are taking advantage of this by selling certain colours at greatly inflated prices.
I imagine the same process would be very useful for the deck of ships, especially larger scales, say 1/350 scale.
Can I apply humbrol satin as a base coat over my acrylic base cost before I start to weather with enamels? I know it should be obvious but my varnish coats always start to peel once enamel thinner is brushed over them in a wash! It's not.jsuy humbrol it's all 4 big names doing the exact same thing so I'm guessing I can't use enamels over acrylic varnish? It's no issue over a straight unvarnished base coat but I need a varnish for the pin washes so I'm absolutely confused to high doors here!
It would be a nice touch to add muddy footprints on the places the feet would have stepped.
So you basically just mix decal fix with a powder and brush it on? Add water? Honestly don’t have a clue brand new to modelling lol cheers
So what advantages would using this have over simply painting your weathering on? I can see the ability to re-manipulate the mixture, or blend it directly on the model as pluses, but would they actually justify buying these over using painted detail?
I was wondering the same.. but I think it's how it looks when it dries... along with the application abilities that you could only achieve with multiple washes.

Thats where i went wrong first time. Didn't make it dilute enough.
Could you apply these to a model straight out of the bottle without adding water or decal fix?
david keely Not really. They're a powder, so they wouldn't stick to the model.

I tried the combination of Humbrol weathering powder (black), water, and Decal Fix recommended at the start of this video but I am not able to reactivate it with water. I have a black mark on my model that seems stuck solid as if it were paint.
Does anyone know what I might have done wrong-too much decal fix, too little decal fix, something else?
+UbiquitousUK honestly a much better alternatives for something powdery for weathering is a Tamiya Weathering Master, not only is it such a simple product, the effects are amazing. It is a semi-water based powder/pastel so it sticks on to the kit or figurine as if it is glue but can easily be removed with some tissue, it also requires no mixing of any sort plus it comes with an applicator and they last pretty long it comes in 6 sets within each sets there are 3 separate effects so its just a matter of what effects you want. This is a much much better alternative than this [humbrol] product ( not sponsored just my humble opinion of this product.)
Ive tried to use this with just water however the mix wont come off the model and i have been left with a horrible grey colour instead of white. Does anyone know a way to get it off without taking off the paint??

Using a wash (which is a thinned mixture of liquid or powdered pigment/paint) in the grey or dust-color spectrum gives me realistic results for weathered tires in a non-mud application (such as aircraft tires). Do you have these colors in enamel or acrylic pots, whereby they can be appropriately thinned with thinner or water to make a homemade wash? Or do you have commercially bought washes of either type (such as Wash for Panzer Grey by Mig)? All these will work. The main emphasis would be a light color of grey or dust, and a thinned mixture that would allow a flowing into the tire's threads, but still allow the tire's black to show through. You can do it, Paul. Experiment with what you have, even using pigments dry brushed onto the tires. Whatever you try will be better than not trying at all, and any weathering at all, will be better than none. And with tires, it would be extremely difficult to mess up.

Can you use this technique on Gundams from Bandai? There plastics are very fragile.
You can, but I'd recommend putting a gloss top coat on the plastic to protect it. I don't know if these products particularly harm the plastic, but putting a protective gloss top coat on bandai's bare plastic is just good practice
Its the same plastic used for most models. I'm sure you use Tamiya cement which is commonly used in scale military models and it's designed to melt polystyrene.
If you gloss coat it, like the other person said, you should be able to do almost any weathering you please to it.
Researched on found out "Matt Cote" is no longer available. Is it not made anymore?

I can't find them in the states at all does anyone know where I can find them in the United States
if you can't find Humbrol, you can try Vallejo, AK Interactive, or MIG for pigment powders.
At any hobby shop/game store that will carry them really... I saw them at my local game shop and came to find this video to learn more about them.
How come rust and iron oxide are different? Arent they the same thing?

Iron Oxide is dark brown, Iron (II) Oxide is blackish and Iron (III) Oxide is reddish brown. Also rust has different shades depending on what environment it is in and how much time it spent out in the open.

+Josh Edillon Don't bother with this product, try Tamiya Weathering Master if you want a simple and amazing weathering set, it is so simple to use no mixing, no thinner, no water is needed. It is just a matter of applying and messing around to find the perfect amount for your kit plus it comes with its own applicator.

Gone Fishing haha, na the dirt gets trapped in the corners (pushed over through sustained use) look in the corners of your room or car, it’ll be filthy haha. So the dirt gets rubbed away from the main bit and pushed to where people don’t put their feet

I have to say i used other weathering powder n they could be just mixed with water n didnt need to be mixed with other products like decal fix n thinner. Wasnt impressed with humbrol weathering powder i just got for this reason, especially because when you buy it makes no mention of the fact that you need those products too!!!!

+J “jwcomair297” White A decal is a transfer on a blue paper. when you soak in liquid you will be able to slide it onto the model. if this didn't help search it on TH-cam
