    Great video! Really interesting and useful information.
    I also heard that bucklers can be used similar to shields (some technique can bolognaise or something like that), but that is not as practical for Arming swords or short swords, because they are far too exposed to use the buckler individually from the sword. Later on, however, practices involving the back-sword and saber started combined using the buckler as a secondary or jabbing weapon (like a blunt knife!) because those swords already come with a well-shielded handguard.

    When people in the period carried bucklers around it was as a substitute as armor/gloves/shield while doing daily life, because true armor would be a little cumbersome for having a drink and getting some errands run. You pull out a sword in buckler when your coughs off guard doing something while your not geared up. Most of the time sword a buckler fight would be an unarmored civilian fight.

    • @TheCrimsonIdol987
      @TheCrimsonIdol987 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep. When you're in plate armor, why even bother with a buckler? Sword and buckler remained common for general use because of its insane practicality.

      That's the great thing about weapon-based martial arts is that weight and strength differences is less of a factor since edged weapons are huge force multipliers that you don't need a lot of strength to cause debilitating injuries. Your opponent can hurt you just as much as you can hurt him.

      Well, there are ways around that... Namely finding a good dragon that can show you how to defend yourself (and probably your city/town) from evil dragons that want to... y'know kill you and burn everything... without actually killing any dragons in the episode. Everyone's happy then.

    As a sword fighter my self please remember to wear a mask when doing drills and slow work when using swords to avoid serious injury. A man recently had a sword put through his eye because he wasn’t wearing a mask. These are first and foremost weapons.

    wow So im going thru and always checking knowledge that ward 1 is the same as my first draw with my katana. Using my back hand on the blade to strike thru. I love watching all sword techniques and you guys are great. Don't usually comment all that much but are u sure u dont use the back hand of your buckler hand to drive your sword forward faster and harder? I am no master by any means but that whole motion looks like a double punch one with your buckler hand punch your sword hand that way you dont extend or expose but have maximum power in the first opening strike cause thats definetly opening Cut.

      Rocknoob49 I'm curious of the stance with sheath like for me in my 15years we never do that except Fro the first draw, from there it's always and I mean ALWAYS hanging, St George to low guard, reverse forward, forward and low guard but low is not something advised as it's about defending your body and not being dramatic with sword play.. all in all these guys know what your doing, I feel his over extension was purely to express the reach and constant state of alertness rather than his specific technique. I will say though some people find it hard to strictly stay on point with traditional methods as the adaption of style And visual education of "what we know" as sword play has taught many of us bad habits.

    1:53 Doesn't the Bolognese school of Swordsmanship have a style of sword and buckler where they hold the buckler out like that? I think I saw some videos of people experimenting with certain Italian manuscripts where the images had the swordsmen holding their bucklers out like that. I do remember hearing that that style isn't very well studied though

      They do, it's also from a couple hundred years after I.33. I don't practice either though so can't speak to what is or isn't more effective
