    The Alchemy Live version is absolute must. It's one of the best live versions of any song there is. Not only is Mark Knopfler his usual amazing self, the drumming in the Alchemy version will blow your mind.

    I consider Mark Knopfler one of the top 5 guitarists, and the top songwriter. All his songs are brilliant tales. Got to see them in November of 1982. Watching Mark’s fingers play over that guitar for hours was magic! Glad you are discovering them!
    Next ones should be Telegraph Road, Romeo and Juliet, Industrial Disease. That will give a broad spectrum.

      Unbelievable - it cut out the best part of the entire song. Knopfler's solo on this is outstanding. You need to watch another version for sure! Mark Knopfler is considered one of the top rock guitar virtuosos, known for his fingerstyle playing. He's a very elegant player with great tone. Money for Nothing was basically their cash-in song. Their earlier stuff is really good.

    This video faded out before the final guitar solo! You have to look at videos, and always go with the longer video. Too many videos are cut short for some unknown reason??? Mark's final guitar solo was very tasteful, building on the pattern he created through the song. It totally fit with the way he spoke-sang the lyrics. This is one of the two best guitar solos of 1980's, the other being "Comfortably Numb". Go back for the full version of this song, just another 20-30 seconds? There are also great live performances of "Sultans of Swing".

    • @jjc5407
      @jjc5407 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well technically both Sultans of Swing and Comfortably Numb are two of the best guitar solos of the 1970s (1978 and 1979 respectively, although the single of the latter wasn't released until 1980). 😉
      I enjoy a lot of guitarists, but for me there is clear separation between Knopfler and Gilmour at the top of my favourites list and all the rest.

      @@jjc5407 Hi JCC, thank you for the fact-check. Yes, once I thought about it, you were right. I was listening to The Wall in 1978-9. And while Straits exploded on the radio during the 80's, I did hear Sultan in 79. It's the old joke, "if you remember the 1970's you weren't there!" Usually that joke is about the 60's, but it works for the 70's just as well.

    Like most people at the time, my introduction to Dire Straits was hearing this song on the radio in 1978. I loved their music and vocals immediately, and still do. This is definitely one of their very best songs. And the debut album that it appears on is excellent, more low-key and bare-bones than much of their later stuff.

  • @samuellord8576
    @samuellord8576 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Great reaction as usual! As others say, you have to hear the Alchemy live version, because it becomes a transcendent song: the band takes off and flies. You need to walk down this road, because it’s truly one of the best live performances in the history of rock. It swings and floats through the center of the soul. Really that good.
    I think the best word for his talk-singing is libretto, but others might correct me. Be well friend!

    One of the most gifted guitarists in rock. Mark Knopfler!!!!!( NAH-FLER) The video cut one of his genius solos.
    He’s kind of more like Bob Dylan in his delivery- “ talking blues”.
    He’s singing about an actual jazz combo he saw called The Sultans of Swing.

    This was the original Dire Straits from their debut album in 1978... Mark Knopfler (vocals & lead guitar) and John Illsley (bass) were the only members who made it to 'Money for nothing' in 1985 and the end of the band by 1993... ex-members - David Knopfler (guitar) is Mark's brother... Pick Withers (drums) left a few years later.
    The music video was edited... the full song had an incredible guitar solo at the end by Mark Knopfler... 🔥🔥
    Dire Straits was very versatile musically; they even had country songs in their catalog ('Setting me up' ... 'Portobello Belle')

    Of special note is that Mark Knopfler has been rated in the top ten of guitarists of all time by several lists by such as Rolling Stone magazine and the like. Also of real note to me, is that Mark Knopfler is a finger-picker (sans pick!) and hence the amazing dynamics he achieves. Watch the video and close-ups of his picking hand. As to 'Open Tuning'... a guitar is normally tuned low E, A, D, G, B, high E. A chord is made up of 3 notes, the 1st, 3rd & 5th of the chord. Like a 'C' chord is played with C, E, & G and by 'fretting' (pushing down the string to make contact with a fret) effectively 'shortens' the string's length making it higher. So, an open chord of C you fret the A string at the 3rd fret (a C note or the 1st or root note), the D string at the 2nd fret (E or 3rd), play the G open (un-fretted), the B string at the 1st fret (high C) and the high E string open. So just 3 notes are played (the C & E are repeated but an octave higher). All 'Open tuning does is change the tightness of several strings (or all of them) with the tuning 'pegs' to play just 3 notes of a chord (some up an octave) without fretting them. A real common alternate 'Open Tuning' is "Drop D" tuning which drops the 2 E strings to D (look that one up as Knopfler and many famous guitarist use it.) Sorry this got a little long winded, but I play and love the guitar!😏

    I am from South Africa and remember hearing them all over the radio during the 80's. One of their less played songs is Romeo and Juliet ,I love that song. Someone who flew under the radar around the world except for South Africa during those times is Rodriquez. I would highly recommend checking out the entire Cold Fact album. A South African eventually tracked him down after 20 + years of us South Africans listening to him only for him to discover he did not even know he was famous here as well as he never got his money from royalties

      That's interesting. When Dire Straits headlined the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute Concert at Wembley Stadium in 1988 Mark mentioned that they'd been banned from South Africa in 1979, just a year after their first album (and this single) were released, due to their opposition to apartheid. He was clearly very proud of the fact. It's nice to know that despite being unable to perform there, their music still got plenty of airplay.

Oh my God man it's one of the most iconic guitar solos from this era and they faded out right at he's getting into it I guess for super short radio play but I know I heard the longer version on the radio all the time and it's perfectly matches the single that I bought for sure. You've got to hear the whole guitar so at the end man that's incredible.

    'Wild West End'... Considered a deep cut off their first album (like 'Sultans of Swing'). One of Mark Knopfler's displays of guitar mastery. Of note is the lack of a solo, but riff after riff throughout to create those 'ear-gasms' that Dire Straits guitar work brings. BTW, you'll note this done during the same session (same wardrobe). 😁 If you ever get a bug to react to an album... their first is it!

    Tunnel of Love is a good one by them as is Telegraph Road. Tunnel of Love was written because rock was fled with American geography references but little from the UK. Knopfler decided to write a song about growing up in his hometown in Britain

    That's a great way to think about it where you kind of offer up Johnny Cash on the other hand and then spoken word in the middle and then rap on the other hand and there are so many other things that show up in rock music that are related to all of that. And most of it goes back to the really old black blues. The rhythmic storytelling.

    Someone already said ...but I must insist....the video you watched cuts the smokin' outro "solo" too short.....stream the full studio version....also, there are a few excellent live versions on YT as well. For your non-reaction ...consider "Down to the Water" and "Wild West End" on their first album "Dire Straits" for his guitar work at different tempos. The album reflects his experience in late 70s London. Very different from the music coming out of NY or LA during the same era. Follow along with the lyrics.... and listen with headphones, naturally.

      It's not just the solo either. You see quite a few covers, and whilst they might get the licks down they rarely if ever have that right hand in perpetual motion the way Mark does. They just play the fills between lyrics but Mark never stops. He has this amazing ability to play lead and rhythm together. The Reo Brothers version, which seems to get a lot of views and a fair few reactions is a prime example.

    - "Sultans of Swing" (and all songs on self-titled, "Dire Straits" album, 1978) on the other hand, have artistic "finesse", especially in Mark Knopfler's unique, pleasing guitar style.

    Well as many of the comments I'm sure have said there's a very special live version and there's multiple live version so you need to do the specific one lie from alchemy as it is the solo of all solos and outros it just is so much better than the original LP or those other live ones you'll find out there I hope you make your way to it one day it really is worth it...
    Yeah I like everybody they go with the official video instead of the live from alchemy You really really have to check that one out It is so worth it

    Brothers in Arms is another great song from the Brothers in Arms album. And for more Keith Moon fun (of which these is many, along with Bonham, the Eagles, and the Who if you go readings (I don't recommend reading the terms Baby Groupies though because you will never see the musicians the same way again). The Real Me by The Who is a good one as well. Unless you heard it. My memory sucks.

    There's a cool live video of this in "Alchemy Live." They're a good band, especially Mark Knopfler's playing. But, they weren't the best '80's band.

      For a while in the mid-80s, on the back of the Brothers in Arms album, they were basically the biggest band in the world. You'd be hard-pressed to find a more accomplished group of musicians. 'Best' is simply subjective.

    I imagine Mark meant the song was dull simply because the sound of the National Style O resonator guitar didn't suit it and that it really came to life with the electric Stratocaster. The song just wasn't right for the National, unlike Romeo and Juliet which is the most famous song Mark plays with the National (which is the guitar that features on the album cover of Dire Straits biggest selling album, Brothers in Arms).
