    I wasn’t having much luck getting a new Rolex from my AD but we also happened to be in the market for unrelated jewelry and I bought her some diamond stud earrings and the conversation came up about being on a list for a new James Cameron Deep Sea. Told him it had been like 2 years and still haven’t heard back. Within a couple weeks he gave me a call and said he had one for me. I paid the full retail price. I was a bit Naïve until later when I realized it was the other major purchase that made me eligible.

    It is quite sad how the brand is playing with the ego & exclusivity. They are far more other important things in our lives than trying to get into the club and having to purchase unnecessary items. Thanks Covid for being the eye opener.

      Not sad at all. It's a very effective way of maintaining brand values, which are necessary in order to charge the prices that Rolex does. The AD sells to a person with "purchase history". That person is a grey market dealer who flips the watch for a higher price. The AD gets a commission and both of them profit. At the same time it creates an aura of exclusivity because an average sucker has to suffer before he's able to buy the watch. Rolex could increase the production ten fold if they wanted to but they perpetuate this scheme because they like it. It's a scam. Let me not even start about their service costs.

  • @neil4701
    @neil4701 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    "Only Rolex authorised dealers are permitted to sell and service"... err, no. You can't stop anyone getting their Rolex serviced by anyone they want, and you can't not "permit" anyone to service a watch (although you can be unhelpful by not making spare parts easily available). And if the servicing costs from Rolex are as massively overpriced as the watches themselves, why would you want to pay through the nose? (which begs the question of why you would want to pay for a Rolex in the firts place..).

      not really, Rolex are actually very humble company and don't really care how much money you have, in fact they have not so expensive (not cheap tho, Rolex is not cheap) but affordable entry-level watch that almost anybody can (and should) buy.
      If you look at history of Rolex, in 50-60s they sold basically to working class people watches as a work tool, and only later starting from 80s they started to make very expensive luxury watch, yet the quality of their watch is basically the same all across they boards.
      I mean, if you buy a Rolex and would wear it for most of your life, would it matter if it costs 3000$ or 10000$?
      how many times during your lifetime you would buy a car? and car is more expensive of that entry-level watch...
      having a Rolex is not about how much money you spend on that watch (even tho some people think it is), but rather choosing an amazing watch made by extraordinary craftsmen for everyday use and appreciation of pure engineering skill of craftsmanship as well as knowing that this watch will most likely outlive you and pass to your children as a memory of you and become family heirloom.

This is a check measure to make sure your loyal and don't flip watches. Yes, they do build a customer profile about you, another check measure to vet the process. No, dealers haven't been able to order watches for about 3 years now. No such thing as "a list". Think I'm wrong, just ask the dealer what number your on the list.

  • @robertbrandywine

    I don't think that ADs in airports are going to play the waitlist or vetting games. They might not have the model you want, but I suspect what they do have they'll let you walk out with. In fact, people have said so. Or you can buy online from a grey market dealer. You will probably pay more than MSRP (but maybe not on less popular models) but that is the most convenient way for most people. Or, you can buy "pre-owned" and get no papers. You would like to have your service history, but hey, any watchmaker can do a normal service on a Rolex, so

    Who cares about Rolex? I mean, really, who cares?! You should never get dependent on just one brand - whatever the industry.
    At the end of the day, they're just watches. Other brands are as good as if not even better than Rolex.

    I was set on buying a Rolex until I learned about the whole "approval" process. Now I don't want a Rolex.
    I guess when you're able to sell a watch made out of steel for five figures you don't need to treat your customers well.

    thank you very much for the video, I'm saving to buy a rolex and I needed to know which are the businesses that provide genuine watches so as not to be scammed.
