@Kelli Frusher yes, I could too. He had a lot to lose, and he was, as Jesus said, advanced in years. Even had he chosen to follow, I wonder how he would have kept up with the others. I forget the name of the actor who played Nicodemus, but he is superb. Dallas actually didn't audition the Nicodemus role. He knew who he wanted from the outset.

At one point, some Pharisees tried to warn Jesus that his life was in danger. "At that time some Pharisees came to Jesus and said to him, “Leave this place and go somewhere else. Herod wants to kill you.” - Luke 13:31

I’ve enjoyed the character of Nicodemus so much. He struggled so hard to believe that Jesus was truly the Messiah versus what he believed as a Pharisee. Love the way The Chosen explores that struggle.

The difference in the Sadducees and the Pharisees is that the former were more secular, the latter more religious. The Pharisee saw themselves and the guardians as custodians of the Jewish way of life. Paul, formerly known as the Pharisee Saul used this to his advantage in Acts 23. In Acts 5 Gamaliel, his mentor, cautioned the Sanhedrin by reminding them that false Messiahs came and went. If Jesus is the true Messiah, then they would be fighting against God.

    • @dannywerner6599
      @dannywerner6599 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Jean - I must respectfully disagree with your first statement. It is my understanding that the Sadducees were more religious so-to-speak and likely less intellectual than the Pharisees. The Sadducees were all about absolute adherence to the strict letter of the law according to literal meaning of scripture whereas the Pharisees took a method of scriptural interpretation albeit within a framework of tradition and rules of code and conduct. Hard to turn the clock back but I researched it for quite a while.
      Peace.

    • @Conmezzo
      @Conmezzo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@dannywerner6599 Thank you. I stand corrected. Today secular means humanist or leaning towards agnosticism or atheism. In the context of the Sadducees and Pharisees, both were religious but the Sadducees didn't believe in the Resurrection or in angels or spirits whereas the Pharisees did. In that sense the Sadducees were more about the here and now instead of the hereafter, somewhat secular to our modern understanding but its best I don't look at this through a 21st century lens.
      Blessings.

Also, for me being an American of Mexican heritage, it's cool to see people like Ivan Jasso, Abe Martell and Leticia Magaña representing el tri on the show, especially since Leticia Magaña is originally from Guadalajara and my family is from a town 60 miles to the east of it.

Interesting point of view. Makes the Pharisees more understandable and relatable like Dallas said. Jesus is about heart and relationship. He strongly and harshly corrected the Pharisees of their religiosity and hypocrisy, Matthew 23. Jesus says to observe what the scribes and Pharisees teach, but warns not to do after their works, because they say and do not. God dwells with those who are humble and contrite in spirit (Is. 56:15, 66:2) and Christ came to make a new covenant with Israel, to put his law in our hearts, Ezekiel 11:19, Jeremiah 31:31-33 and Hebrews 8:8-13. An interesting difference between the Pharisees and Sadducees was that the Sadducees didn't believe that there was a resurrection. Acts 23:8 For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit: but the Pharisees confess both.

According to Catholic, there are 3 Pharisees who were known as "good" Pharisees, because later on they'll become followers of Christ:
    1. Nicodemus.
Feast Day - August 31, along with Joseph of Arimathea.
    2. Saul/Paul of Tarsus (the Apostle).
Feast Day - June 29, along with St. Peter.
    3. Gamaliel (Acts 5:34). He is also a teacher of Saul/Paul (Acts 22:3).
    Feast Day - August 3.

Maybe in upcoming seasons, Shmuel and Yussif have changed their hearts to believe in Jesus according to John 12:42
Many people did believe in him, however, including some of the Jewish leaders. But they wouldn't admit it for fear that the Pharisees would expel them from the synagogue.

The reason I appreciated the humanity portrayed of the pharisees in The Chosen is while we relate to them it is hoped that we also see our reflection in them. The religious spirit that many Christians have today is the same spirit that the pharisees were crippled by. Because of that they couldn't see Jesus for who He was. It would do us good not to see the pharisees as good guys just because they seem to be like us. We wouldn't want to be like them at all or Christ would call us hypocrites and that our father is satan.

This is another aspect of The Chosen that I really like and respect-the honest and thoughtful portrayal of the Pharisees. There was only one other movie (called The Day Christ Died) and the book entitled I, Judas, too, that not only explored the dilemma of the Pharisees (and the Sanhedrin, in general) when Jesus appeared on the scene, but also addressed the political climate that existed in the country at the time. The Pharisees were considered to be Israel’s religious leaders (and, therefore, the leaders of the country) and any negotiations that took place with Rome, and THEIR leaders, took place between the Pharisees and the Roman officials who were there in positions of power. And what the Pharisees were most concerned with was keeping the peace; in other words, they wanted no uprisings from other factions (like the Zealots) that would give the Romans any excuse to attack and/or to kill more Jews. And then, here comes Jesus to tip over the apple cart in the biggest way possible. And so the Pharisees are split and confused, because those that are sincere are afraid that he will start an insurrection and the ones who are hypocrites really resent the fact that He is usurping their power and completely undermining their power base. But, where Jesus really got into trouble was when He began to infiltrate and influence some of the more notable Romans, as well-especially Pilate’s wife. Yet, nobody knows what to make of Him because (to the vast disappointment of the Zealots, and many of His own disciples), He didn’t come to lead an uprising against Rome. But, since nobody really understood His real mission (not even His disciples) and since He was scaring the shit out of the majority of the Sanhedrin, and since He had even begun to scare Pontius Pilate, it was time for Him to go-politically speaking. (And, in those days, they didn’t run ads or try to impeach you, they killed you!) All in all, this may be the best written story about Jesus ever made.

Think of Nicodemus as the Catholic who is open to the power and authority of God becoming incarnate not just in a man but also in the Church. Think of Shmuel as the Protestant who thinks he knows Scripture and will not go beyond it and is blind to certain parts of Scripture and will limit God's power to Jesus and the apostles but not their successors.

Jesus condemned the Pharisees in Mathew 23. Jesus teaching was not the same as the Pharisees. In fact Jesus told them that the love of God wasn't in their hearts John 5:42. The Pharisees we're about traditions and outward appearance not a transformed heart, Jesus called them hypocrites. Jesus taught you have to have a transformed heart, a true heart for God.

  • @paulo1149

That's a great point he makes about the heart of the problem being mostly the elitist pharisees. Jesus did have problems with some out in the boondocks, such as at Capernaum in John 6, but most of the sparks flew when He confronted the leaders at Jerusalem.

Of course they were all not bad. Yeshua/Jesus called them Righteous on so many occasions.
Their problem was the institution that had been created by their time. Because the rightful priest Yohannan/John had been destituted, & paid illegal leaders had replaced him. All this done by the Herod who slaughtered John & was not even the rightful king, for he had been placed by Rome/Edom.
And even in today's context, just try to tell the average clergy that they only uphold the 9 commandments & see what a riot you'll get. And don't even gey statted on the hyper grace &/or prosperity gospel preachers. Jesus would not have lasted the 3 years before being crucified by the system that rules today
Nothing new under the sun. Shalom.
May The Chosen be part of the revival of the Remnant.

Ok you Dallas just said in your statement. That some believe Jesus was a Pharisee. If they will only read their BIBLE Matthew 5:20 exactly, Jesus himself said unless your righteousness exceeds the Pharisees... this is clear; Jesus Was Not a Pharisee. - Just saying; Go and learn what this means. - Isaiah 8:20 King James Version
To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them. The Word of God is the Truth. - We ought to believe God rather than man, and that is by His Only Begotten Son Jesus Christ.

Yes, I tell you, it will be charged against this generation. 52Woe to you lawyers! After the season 1 finale, I think it was obviously implied that Shmuel might be one of our main antagonists going forward.
But I've REALLY enjoyed his set-up. Shmuel is certainly a character who is confused and doesnt know how to respond to certain moments, (spiritually, mentally, and EVEN physically as shown with the crowd lol) but he also embodies the flaws that I believed the Pharisee'a who persecuted and shamed Jesus had possessed.
He was a guy who didnt have a great sense of humor as shown with Nicodemus when he asks about Sardines, he has the belief that the scriptures they possess of the Old Testament are more.than just the law of God, but rather God himself and he doesnt believe that anything new can be possible or even be allowed, and he's always going behind someone's back, whether it's the public who admired Pharisees or even his own mentors.
He's actually turning himself into the viper that John had proclaimed them as by arresting people like.John or going against his fellow pharisees and mentors who share different beliefs in THEIR hearts, not necessarily hating his brothers like Moses had said but he also isnt trusting his brothers enough, and hes used a lot of subterfuge, deceit by going behind everyone's backs.
Which reminds me.....wasnt there another thing in scripture about a snake who used deception...? 🤔
Could that be another reason why Shmuel was offended by John's claim? Hehehehe

Keep strong. Dont forget that despite the evil in this world, God is full of justice, mercy and love.
Justice said we broke His perfect law - causing the world's previous perfection to be destroyed - and therefore we deserve Hell (like a punishment in any legal system but this is eternal as His perfect law is eternal too). Don't think you fit in that category? Ever done one of these?: lying, stealing - regardless of how small the object EVER, hating others - which is murder in God's perfect law, lusting (plus God sees our entire thought life). Justice says "the soul that sins shall die" - if we break one in thought/word/deed it's as if we're guilty of all of them. Quite simply, living by the law (which is doing everything perfectly) is impossible for sinful humans
. The law shows us that 1. We will die in Hell if we fail to follow it and 2. We cannot save ourselves BUT, 3. God's perfect, immovable law points us to Christ, who followed and fulfilled the law in thought, word and deed perfectly in our place. He did what we couldn't and did it on our behalf. He was then sentenced to death on a cross, and took our personal punishment for our sin, paying our penalty (like paying our fine) completely FOR us, and has given us freedom.
If we turn from the sins we have committed and repent (pursue the opposite direction of love through Christ) He will, overtime, recreate us into His image through The Holy Spirit which Jesus sends to all who accept Him as their personal Lord and Savior of their life. We cannot purify ourselves, but Christ lived that perfect sinless, pure life and then allotted it to our "account".
That's where our righteousness comes from. Not from any good, works that you or I could do.
It is not based on the amount of good works we do. God starts the changes, He carries it on, and He completes it in those who let Him.
It's about letting Christ in to guide and teach you and obeying Him, again, through His power and instruction).
He is our substitute in His life, death and resurrection. He essentially rewrote history in our place so that, if you believe in Him, it will be as if YOU had never sinned if you accept Christ's death as our own in our place.
He is in Heaven right now preparing a place for us so that He can take His faithful, believing children home with Him when He returns. He will ressurrect us from death when He returns, giving mercy to those who accept His love, forgiveness, instruction and teachings in their life, and give justice to those who refuse it.
He doesn't want ANY of us to go to Hell and die for continuing in evil and rejecting His way to life, thats why He died FOR us. Hes giving EVERYONE a chance, He wants everyone to take the free gift of salvation from Hell. He wants us to be His and begin to follow His life of love and service through His power and abiding (staying) with Him. So long as we keep our hearts near to Christ through His strength, strive to follow His will of perfect love revealed in the Bible, and let Him lead in the midst of (very certain) pitfalls and struggles, we will, in time, win the ultimate victory over sin, pain and DEATH through Christ. Even if you are willing to be made willing, pray for Jesus to come in and He will do what we can't. Give us The Holy Spirit who will guide us in the right way.
NOTE: You are NEVER too sinful or messed up that God cannot turn your life around through Jesus. EVER
If you have any questions let me know xx
I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have [perfect] peace. In the world you have tribulation and distress and suffering, but be courageous [be confident, be undaunted, be filled with joy]; I have overcome the world.” [My conquest is accomplished, My victory abiding.]

Matthew 23:15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.
Matthew 23:23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

“47 In turn the Pharisees answered: “You have not been misled also, have you? 48 Not one of the rulers or of the Pharisees has put faith in him, has he? 49 But this crowd who do not know the Law are accursed people.” 50 Nic·o·deʹmus, who had come to him previously and who was one of them, said to them: 51 “Our Law does not judge a man unless it first hears from him and learns what he is doing, does it?” 52 In answer they said to him: “You are not also out of Galʹi·lee, are you? Search and see that no prophet is to be raised up out of Galʹi·lee.”” John 7:47-52
According to scripture … they were very evil. And even threaten their own whoever stepped out of bounds. Nicodemus was at the time of Jesus death not of the same sort as the Pharisees but he still coward during Jesus minister. It was not till after Jesus death he shows some courage. But the scriptures say nothing else concerning Nicodemus. There may also have been Pharisees who did not manifest bitter opposition or who later became Christians. For example, the Pharisee Gamaliel counseled against interfering with the work of Christians (Ac 5:34-39), and the Pharisee Saul (Paul) of Tarsus became an apostle of Jesus Christ.-Ac 26:5; Php 3:5. *But Paul is the only one recorded to have converted to Christianity.*
*Just how evil were the Pharisees?* “All the same, many even of the rulers actually put faith in him, but they would not acknowledge him *because of the Pharisees* so that they would not be expelled from the synagogue; 43 for they loved the glory of men even more than the glory of God.” John 12:42, 43 “But this crowd who do not know the Law are *accursed people.”* - John 7:49 The Pharisees was a self-righteous bunch and had no love for the people. If you excepted Jesus teachings they would blacklist you. Which happened to all Jews that excepted Jesus.
*Just how evil were the Pharisees or how did Jesus view them?* Jesus said that they were liars and not just liars but that their father was Satan in John chapter 8. That statement is so very true … amazingly a few times they tried to stone Jesus to death without a trial (John 8:59; 10:31) but his death was prophesied to the stake, tree Act 10:39.
*Particularly, at Jesus trial they show just how evil they are!* according to scripture, ... “But they found none, although many false witnesses came forward. Later two came forward 61and said: “This man said, ‘I am able to throw down the temple of God and build it up in three days.” - Matthew 26:60, 61 But they knew what Jesus actually said and knew exactly what he meant by it! At the end of this fixed trial and after Jesus execution, they go to Pilot requesting, “the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered together before Pilate, 63 saying: “Sir, we recall what that impostor said while he was still alive, ‘After three days I am to be raised up.* 64 Therefore, command that the grave be made secure until the third day, so that his disciples may not come and steal him and say to the people, ‘He was raised up from the dead!” - Matthew 27:62-64. So they knew what Jesus actually said and what he meant concerning the temple … referring to his body. *They searched for and knowingly allowed false testimony against Jesus!*
*So the law that they so-called claimed to adhere to … they broke!* According to the law they have condemned themselves ... “The judges will thoroughly investigate, and if the man who testified is a false witness and has brought a false charge against his brother,19 you should do to him just as he had schemed to do to his brother, and you must remove what is bad from your midst.” - Duet 19: 18-19 They deserved the death penalty!
And they still use this same false testimony against other Christians in the future. (See Acts 6:9-14)
So in reality, only one is recorded to convert and teach what Jesus and the Apostles taught ... who in the beginning originally seeking out Christians to put to death … nothing else is said concerning Nicodemus. *If this show makes it appear that the Pharisees were not bad or just ignorant or to humanize them* ... then its producers are just liars and their father is Satan ... *by the testimony of the scriptures (GOD WORD), the Pharisees were indeed evil!* I just watched some of the 1st episode, there nothing in scripture stating Nicodemus performed an exorcism ... let alone on Mary Magdalen ... Simon picking fights with inlaws ... etc. I see no reason to continue watching such baloney. So far they're bent on not telling the truth ... mixing in lies with half-truths is still lying ... TD!

It was a lie that caused mankind to fall in the first place. When you create a story that not true concerning God's word then you give false testimony on God's word. Why do you feel that you can't be truthful? Just what is your point? Or are just trying to make a buck and don't really care about truth?
