Take your welded aluminum steering knuckle to a foundry, and have them heat treated and hardened to T5. I know of a good one in Seattle you can ship it to. I have had them do suspension parts for my race car.
maybe its just time to mill some with a dedicated design 😅
@@scuffedthings530 I think he's been prototyping some, cant remember which channel he was on interviewing about the 3 rotor

At 22:33 you can see a wrench slide off from the center console area, definitely relatable 😂
proves he was working on the car till the last moment
Isn't that the reverse gear wrench?
Rob’s growing his beard out? I’m for it
Never mind, he cut it off
Yup as a big bearded gentleman I am sad 🫤
that's his lucky beard, only cuts it after the crazy shit happened already
Do you think that “keeps” is keeping working more on good hair or his beard? I mean to do that in every episode. I don’t care if they they are past or present, the man can grow hair.
@@codyserr7331 shit, if it gets his beard that thick…
@@codyserr7331he would have to apply it to his beard too but he never grows it out so why would he
You think the rx7 was loud? Should hear my 3 year old daughter shout and scream every time a Rob Dahm video finishes 😂
Absolutely adorable.
Bro's capping to farm likes
@5:30 - Buy an old oven off of marketplace to do all of your part preheating, so you don't have to waste time waving a torch around lol
Thanks for the shout out on my Volkswankel! It IS a riot to drive, after Hillfest I increased rear track width by 4 inches, trailbraking into a corner is a widowmaker, but I'm dialing it in. It was great to meet you, just as down to earth in person as you are in your videos. Keep pushing the envelope brother!
Ghia with a rotary is good energy ❤
As a German I had to chuckle when I saw that name. Volkswankel is just perfect!
Dropped everything immediately to watch this

REAL
#ROB, my guy. Make the exhaust a pipe-in pipe with air gap. For the little effort it takes to make one (caveat, for an experienced welder) and the little space loss you get from it, it gives back A LOT.
In case these aren't as popular as i think they are, i'll admit, i've only seen three cars here in Europe, it's easy to make. In this case, i'll detail for a straight piece of pipe, but it follows the logic for elbows too. You start at a flange, then weld 3 stand-off pegs, and tack your outer pipe over, on those three pegs, spacing it equidistant from the inner pipe. The outer pipe stops before the inner pipe needs to meet another segment, so you can weld the inner pipe. Each new outer segment gets 3 new pegs to space it. You keep doing this until you're out of the hotbox. You can do this with forced air (the gap is fed to a vacuum box and as the car moves it sucks the air out through a cold intake that feeds in the outer sleeve) or stagnant air. The stagnant variant gets coated, as heat will eventually leach. The gap can be as small as 5 mm or more.
This idea evolved from old school race cars where they'd take chicken wire fence, wrap the exhaust, then wrap it with cloth. The gap was enough to keep temps low. You can try that too, to start with. I believe one of the old British F1 race cars from the mid 80's had this, but i can't, for the life of me, recall which one (essentially you look for the thick exhaust one).
They also do this on cars with sidepipes and it's very effective. Only penalty on a racecar is the weight, but 5 pounds is better than melting stuff
I need to see this car in Gran turismo, I'll never realistically be able to have one like this irl but at least in Gran turismo 7 I could get to experience how this is to drive
Just build one in Forza Motorsports 6, its what i did. I still have a few Ken Block builds i did years ago.
Just like how every time we see Rob weld I gain a little more appreciation and respect for how consistently brilliant Isaiah is, seeing Rob on camera duty makes me appreciate Joel a lil bit more each time too
It's like Bert Munro on worlds fastest Indian after working on it for 44 years straight - all I want is one good run!!
2:27 I remember hearing Ron Dennis from Mclaren saying how they always learned more from their failures than their wins. I work in design and ever since hearing that I actually get exited when I find errors like this because it means I'll improve.
So your outer bearing race doesn't spin in the hole ever gain, get the bearings with locking features and then machine those receiving features in your parts. It will pocket you more, yes, but it's worth putting a square peg in a square hole, because you know it will never spin short of doing some really funky, funky stuff. You can find them as "pinned bearing" - but that's just one type of bearing with locking features. Some even have flats. IN your case, you can remove the dowel pin and replace with a hardened screw with a pin end, that will lock the bearing in place after you've installed it. I would not try to machine a bearing race myself, even if it seems easy. Best to leave it to the engineers, because they did the math and know exactly where they can and can't fit those pin holes. Just my 2 cents. Until i discovered that you can have pinned bearings, i had so many steering parts damaged over the years. Given the simple solution, not worth even bothering with classing bearings anymore.
bump
The bearing goes into the square hole
Was a honor meeting and racing with you 🙌 can't wait for next year!
Could sleep to that sound, you need to make a 10 hour long video of your runs😂
I would love to see Misha Charoudin take this car at full tilt around the Nurburg ring. That would be something else!
Rob...I've been watching you for a number of years. You really have dialed in your progress. Great work.
Rob , I have been following you for years, love your videos. And I really appreciate that you show your failures as well as successes. And how you work through the problems.
And probably just as important, the chemistry between you and Isaiah. The rest of your team is good, but how you and Isaiah work together is on a completely different level.
Agreed. Jarret was great too
Only OG fans remember him
15:30 That's a beautiful Karmanghia!
19:11 mfw i look at my mobile bank and find out how much I spend last night out with the boys haha
🤣🤣🤣
I saw the voltage drop when you test fired the first time. I was thinking o boy new alternator. I hope he looks at his dash and not the computer.😂 I'm glad to see it was short. 😁👍
put kaowool around the egate. its the insulation they use in forges you can have a torch to one side and be able to touch the other with your bare hand. and its very light.
Y'all are amazing fabricators, but I have never seen anything even vaguely resembling an attempt at fume extraction when you're welding stainless.
Please take care of yourselves, it's less of a big deal in an open shop setting like yours, but hexavalent chromium is still scary.
Oh man I needed this. Thanks Rob
The driver front wing instantly falls off and Joel just laughs. Love it. Made me laugh.
It’s about time
Where is Isaiah?
Exactly what I was thinking!
He was at the peak, so not far, sometimes he's behind the camera also from what i have heard.
I’m late to watch this video but I came to ask the same thing. If Isaiah is gone. Bring him back. No Isaiah, no Rob Dahm videos for me.
22:30 Having a loose wrench in the car while you are racing, isn't a good idea.
It's not loose, it's cable tied down. Pretty sure it's the one they were using when the gearbox shifting was faulty or not wired up correctly
Good enough for Boeing.
Literally came here to say the same thing. 😂
@@RTSRAZORBACK Isnt it for reverse?
That's how he gets into reverse. It's not a wrench, it's a shift lever
Where is the mullet guy?
I love how Rob's movement in public goes completely NPC.
It is fun for us to watch your adventures. Thanks for including us in them!
Have you looked at remotely locating the gate electronics ? Does it need to sit that close to the mechanics ? I have a BMW with an electronic gate. It uses a long shaft to control the mechanical side of the waste gate.
Now where did I leave that 10mm spanner?
On the center console
Who left a wrench on the trans cover. Total projectile potential 😬. It's totally wild to see the G forces on the wireloom on the passengers side.👍
Rob "black flag" Dahm at it again, love to see the upload sir
they should just give special treatment to Rob and wave a pirate flag instead of the black flag.
You gotta do your pre race walkthrough. You're in a car that is unimaginably fast and still in a refinement process. Knowing the course is super important especially when you are pushing the limits of your ability and the cars durability. I love watching you win but would settle for just watching. You get what I'm saying right?
If you have more trouble maybe make a chamber slightly bigger than the exhaust to slow down the exhaust gases then well fins to dissipate the heat with the atmosphere right before the wastegate you probably don't got room though but that sure significantly lower the exhaust temperature it shouldn't affect performance just a idea. But if the temperature doesn't drop enough for some reason try to adding a little bit resistance much less than a converter and that definitely will accumulate most of the heat in that area so it will be dissipated
All this in car footage of the 3-rotor is GOLD
Sometimes i feel like i'm stalking this guy
That brisket sandwich was the most expensive thing you bought prepping, racing, and breaking this trip
This is the only channel i am subscribed to with the bell icon !
17:31 - "What's that noise" moment 😂
Every time I see the 3 rotor I think, “this is the most professional contraption of all time”. The interior gives me anxiety while being so impressed
Rob it looked like you were having so much fun than you were immune to the car gremlins. Really great to see you in this mindset Rob. No urgency, just ironing out all the things to get it absolutely perfect for your next Pike's Peak run 👌
This is propably on of if not the coolest vehicle ever! You should have him build you one!
When are you planning on working on the 12 rotary engine
Yes
Where is Isaiah? Did you sack him because of the PP issues?
PP thing?
have i missed something?
bro's probably just having a day off
He threw some serious shade on the pikes peak episodes...I wouldn't doubt him sacking him and hiring someone who takes their job more seriously.
he does other stuff besides working for Rob if i remember correctly. but he's probably dealing with family medical stuff that was mentioned in a previous video. was likely one of the big reasons why Isaiah was working on teaching the other guys during the build up to pikes peak so he can take time off.
@@sirmonkey1985 Isaiah also posted on IG around the time of Pike's Peak about how he was tired of the pre-event time crunches and didn't know if he could do another. I think he said he was going to take some time off to evaluate where he wanted to be moving forward.
Rob thanks for sharing so openly. You're a humble badass, keep up the good work.
that titanium exhaust and the intake were so perfect. Too perfect to be real
Would love to see ya come to PA and run giant's despair hillclimb, its a 2 day event. You get plenty of runs
Always had the same issue with our oval sprint cars. Take the o ring out use some superglue, and glue the oring in the grove. And huse a hose clamp around the filter. Just a small tip. Love your videos
I was literally in that bucees like three weeks ago for the first time. I had a shit eating grin on my face the whole time, the whole world needs bucees
Don't remember if it was mentioned on previous videos but can you not switch to a canister style oil filter that just uses the paper insert? Love all your videos Rob. Can't wait to see some more on the 12 Rotor.
Wow earliest I've ever been
That turn at 27:30 had me going "Damn! That uis _fast_!
wake up babe, new pikes peak rx7 vid dropped
Hey Rob you guys should machine out the bearing housing and press in a steel insert into the carrier so that the bearings are flush with the same material for the bearing and therefore reduced temperature difference and tighter interference fit?
Let’s go Rob! I’m super excited to see what number shirt I got dude
saaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaame
Shirt 146 would be the sickest shirt to get as that's Robs number
Lunch time drop, my favorite time. Let's gooo!

One problem with high specific engine power density, which is to be controlled both analogue and digitally, is the sensors that record the usability values. For example, the injection timing in high-performance diesel engines, such as those from Sulzer, is precisely controlled using cylinder wear and piston ring metallophone sensors. In addition, there are magneto oil sensors that can measure iron, nickel, cobalt and their oxides in the engine oil. These measured values control an ultra-fine centrifugal filter that cleans the oil. The fine cleaning of the operating oil is carried out by gravimetric sedimentation. For this purpose, there is a clarifying auxiliary oil tank that contains magnets at the bottom and generates a strong electrical DC field in a vertical direction for perfect cleaning.
Awesome too see you enjoying the progression of yr team, an some content as well seems like I don't see much of yr blogs/updates anymore......... Thanks Guys
Yo holy shit the 9-10k rpms in that last run up the hill.. such glorious sounds❤️
Gotta love a race car with an ignition key!
I would love to see an active aero in this car. What an amazing piece of menacing machine art.
Love to see the progress with this car!! Hill climb stuff is so rad as well
Can't remember the fancy name but have you thought of moving the turbo outside of the engine bay and have it further rearwards with more space around it? Run the exhaust towards the rear like normal but the turbo is in the boot with a charge pipe running back to the front?
The only other place for it would pretty much be under the trunk, unless he wants to modify the passenger floor pan.
remote turbo?
@@extec101 probably rear mount turbo
@@jacobm2625 thats another name for it.
It's funny that turbo smart defend the heck out of the e-gate despite failures that happen to them. Pointing out a le man's car uses it just fine.
Cylindrical locking compound the green stuff... good luck getting it out though.
Gawd the off throttle noise this car makes is just insane. Sounds like a Gundam landing or something. Wild. Bummer about the oil filter failure! At least you got some runs in.
"Hey, there's something wrong with your ride. You had a huge oil leak at starting line. You have to end the race fast."
Pikes peak next summer is going to be crazy when Rob has a year of prep instead of 4 months 🔥🔥🔥
Descended out of snowshoe on a bicycle while touring the Eastern Divide route. Overheated my disc brakes on that steep smooth road. Makes sense to race there.
Those electrical gremlins may have given you a ton of extra work but they've also saved you a ton of money and likely saved your life a few times as well. Thank you for bringing us along on your incredible journey.
I really feel like this car full tilt up this hill climb course would just be absolutely insane. I honestly don’t know if you could do it. It’s seems like it would be so crazy you would forget to breath during the race case it would take so much concentration.
22:33 - I found the 10mm spanner!
don't detract from pikes... i been up it.. but i get it. I have similar kit, (not as big) love making and watching others do the same.. great work !! amazing
cant believe how hard it seems to build a good working race cars, you always have an issue of some sort, great that you still have fun, i would be frustated a bit, good job looking for more of that car
Calm the Nancy's down, and enjoy raw, unfettered track awesomeness.
Soo.... Just a thought.... What if rob built a slipstream aero kit for the 4 rotor, rebuilt motor for one run, I'm talking 3k hp. Nitro meth. Port and manifold injection, possibly a pre ignition mixer, and go to salt flats for top speed run. Mabey suspension tuning or complete change to torsion bars( I know it's alot of work. Even the body would be great work. But I think the 4 rotor with right transmission and rear end, fuel system and tuning(witch I know he can do) without body work the thing would probably fly at 250 mph. Add aero body and suspension that can work with body and undercarriage I can see him hitting at least 285.
Great in car video on the second run.
31 Seconds after upload. I'm normally early, but not this early
As I mentioned before, I'm looking forward to the next step of ‘simply’ making sensible (flow) calculations as the basis for such a comprehensive project. ‘Just going for it’ inevitably leads to a lot of crap that doesn't work.
You need a pressure bypass or add another filter parallel for volume to drop pressure. Love the car
I was so excited for this! Love you guys
I like watching your racing videos at 2x speed so you look super human
