21 Aug 2023, up in the Sawtooth mountains I was on my 2022 KTM 300 XCW. It had rained hard for three days and creeks had began running again. Was a very difficult trail that snaked around through steep cliffs but, was in the valleys with cliffs on both sides. Crossed a creek and about 100 meters later, arrived at a newly fallen tree, which was impassable. Turned around and a broken/splintered branch had punctured my front tire. As approaching the creek again, the watered had permeated the ground out about 20 feet. As I made the slight turn right, my front wheel peeled off the rim a bit and it threw me, bouncing and into the creek. The pain as excruciating. After about three hours, I had long given up hope of being found, three out of state riders came along. Life flight eventually found a place to land.was in intensive care for about two weeks…broke every rib on my right side w/punctured lung, shattered clavicle, broken right ankle and fractured T7 and T12 vertebrae. Worst experience of my life and I am retired Army Airborne/Air Assault. Raced MX from about 7 through my freshman year of college. Freak accident and I have nightmares of me lying in the creek and freezing to death. Not a scratch on my bike, guess that is a good thing…right? 🤔😠🤙
Guys, the bike slipped out on him with the loose terrain underneath. It bucked underneath him, most likely causing him to briefly pull more throttle, making him lose control. It didn’t look like he intentionally steered left. It looked like his tire got caught in a groove and forced him left.
Dont know why this was in my recommended, but definitely worth the time to watch! You were very lucky not to be injured, seriously injured or killed. BTW, I love the time stamp for" the impatient" & how you expressed your gratitude to everyone that helped you during all this!! Stay safe, crazy man!! I wouldnt of walked on that trail yet alone rode a dirt bike on it. 💜
It's a 2 stroke so just dump the gas drain the oil clean out the carb (2019 may be fuel injection) turn it over a few times to get the water out and you're good to go....after replacing all your fluids of course.

@@fatboynip I had the same thought watching the beginning I was thinking this dude hasn't been riding long or the guy he went with told him there all fire roads itll be easy...
the video clarity and the equipment's stability/durability and or also the quality of the camera used is awesome - especially after falling and being knocked about the rocks - and then being submerged in the drink.. he actually seemed quite calm/composed for having almost died in my opinion.. and besides for the obvious fact of having the needed experience and of course most importantly is common sense .. just having the level of skill/instinct needed to match what type of riding your going to be doing is pretty damn important and it's also good to see people like him having/utilizing good quality riding/safety equipment (minus a damn parachute) as those things while being expensive can prevent serious injury and or in some situations even death .. great video all around....
Damn what an insane experience. Glad you made it out! My first thought when you hit the water was how heavy the boots and gear must felt trying to stay above water. Bet you puckered on that one!!
Some people walk out. Some don't. 9/19/2015 = me getting permanently paralyzed from chest down, after riding dirt bikes for 30 years. Careful out there. Only takes one freaky landing, then you're toast.
@@robw3761 Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't realize you asked a q. I love questions. I went down a treacherous decline, then got off trail. I've had more success hanging on, instead of dumping. So I hung on. But then my front wheel hit something, my bike stopped dead in its tracks, and I flew over the handle bars. In the many spills I've had over the years, I landed ok. But this time I landed flat on my back. I begged my bro in law to remove the rock out of my back and told him I couldn't feel my legs, as I was writhing in pain and gasping to breathe. Well, that wasn't a rock. It was my broken spine. But I must say, in many respects my life got better. I got married, and woke up to the important things. Would of those things happened anyway? I dunno. Maybe. But all is well. Thanks for asking!

So glad you're alright and nothing happened to you. I cringed and had flashbacks, but would live to see some pictures of the bike following the aftermath. Wouldn't ask if I didn't know the details on how your health was. But since we all know you're back on a bike some pictures would be lovely. Rock on brotha. Again glad to see you're in good health.
This is crazy, it's like a hollywood short film from the decent with the little slip for foreshadowing, the anxiety and anticipation at the bottom, then the inevitable fall and fight for survival through the chaos.
Somehow, I drove this from the CB side to Marble twice in a VW bug. The first time was in a rented bug. The second time, I took my own bug and got a flat tire about the place where you went diving. I’m glad it was on the inside front tire and not an outside rear tire. When I was in beginner mode on my Yamaha ttr 125, the creek crossing was too high for me to navigate. Thankfully, it’s what kept me from thinking that I could handle this cool Pass on my dirt bike. You got it. I didn’t know about having a healthy dose of fear or smarty’s in me at that point in my life. Now, I think about how far I might have to walk or crawl to get help.
DUDE!! That is some official bragging rights, right there! Im pretty sure he hit two? shelves before plunging into ice cold water? He was cussing on the way down even though he had like half a second of time after that last shelf impact. Im impressed
Congrats on surviving! I’ve been in over my head a few times on my dirt bike but I only do that when death is very low risk. My fear of heights wouldn’t even allow me to hike that trail!
Perhaps using clutch time after would help passing that section much easier and the bike wouldn't jump the way it did. Using clutch in these tricky and rocky section is a big advantage. Don't get me wrong but from the beginning of the video i can tell that you are not very experienced for such terrain :). Anyways, Thank God that you are alive, it's unbelievable that you are still alive 👍
Rick Hogge practice more in a wider area with the technical terrain. Clutch time or momentum, balance and looking ahead to sight your line in will help. I ride with momentum and line picking since you get beat up less. It helps skip over every little bump. Your body will get less fatigued on longer rides for sure.
Ah, yes, the Devil's Punchbowl". Many 4x4's have met their fate there over the years. A Florida based new riding friend did this, but his bike somehow landed front wheel down in a shallow spot, water was up to the tank but not in the airbox. He managed to bail before the bike went and he didn't go over. A talented rider in our group managed to ride it out, the bike was barely damaged and he was able to ride it for the rest of the trip no problem. I had a nice cold beer waiting for him back at the truck, since then we've been brothers for life even though we only personally met on that one trip 😆 Have ridden through this are many times, it is actually easier to go a little fast through there as it gets the suspension to move instead of deflect. Rule #1 in Colorado mountain riding is always to fall into the hill if one is gonna fall 😂 Glad you are OK!
I just became a subscriber of your amazing Adrenaline adventure channel. I’ve had my share of wipeouts but this one tugged at my heartstrings, especially when you were floating in the pool with not much movement and no one to help, glad you’re ok, what a horrible thing to happen in one of the most scenic rides. Been over that pass a half dozen times on my dirtbike. Last time had just returned to camp at the base and some guy walked into camp at sundown saying he just drove his 4X4 over the edge (like many others) and needed a ride back over to the Crested Butte side. Never resisting a opportunity to go ride I rode that thing with him on the back at night, dropped him off in Butte and road back to camp arriving around midnight. And why you never ride a dirtbike in Colorado without a strong headlamp. Great video, we've all been there unfortunately...
I raced pro back in the early 2000’s and I’ve seen many terrible scary wreck, I’ve been in so bad ones, but this one right here is hands down the scariest most insane wreck I’ve ever seen...... This dude is one lucky guy!!! 😳
I'm glad everything turned out okay for the new scuba diver! That rider was unbelievably fortunate when you consider the distance he traveled down and the immovable objects between the trail and the water that could have caused tremendous physical injury. After watching it a few times I'm getting the impression that the angle of rock to the righthand side is just enough to create a similar effect to that created by the angled concrete freeway dividers we're all familiar with. That divider was created to reduce the number of vehicles crossing into oncoming lanes. The angle is a sort of mild "V" shape, rotated 90°. It is designed to deflect a moving object from the ground upward where it then strikes the opposing angle of the concrete barricade, which doesn't prevent crashes in the same direction of travel, but it does reduce head on collisions. That same angular momentum seems to have pushed the dirtbike where it's rider had no plans to go.
When I was a kid my dad took me is his 1962 Jeep on the Devils Punch Bowl trail. Looks like it's not passable with a vehicle any longer due to the road looking to narrow. I do know that they blocked off the road next to CB mountain and it's only open to residents. We had one of those cabins.
In the summer of 2018 I did the same thing about 2-3 seconds before you did. Hard to watch. I ended up with a few broken ribs but the kdx 200 survived with minor damage. Big believer in full riding gear. Thanks for posting.
Worst thing about go pros is that it makes him look like he’s slowly putting along on a dirt road when in reality he’s flying up a 40 degree mountain in crazy terrain
Sincere apologies for not bringing my protractor gentleman. As for the speed I am talking about when he takes off on the flats. The go pro fish eye lens makes it look like he’s not going fast at all. Just speaking from experience. When I was a kid riding my dirt bike filming, then I’d look back at the footage and it looks like nan could walk faster. Yes I have ridden in the past but don’t own a bike currently and I am by no means a professional like you guys.
I rode off a cliff at 5 mile pass in Utah, it happens fast and than you're stunned, unable to breath, and banged up with broken limbs. I couldn't even inhale to scream from the pain, i didn't remember how i got there. My helmet had a crack on the top and the mouth guard got crushed in so I am glad i had it or I'd have died. This gave me a weird sense of fear lol hope all is well.

Sheesh that’s scary. You never know what the ride can bring us. I went down on my last trip to Lake Tahoe. Didn’t expect that was going to happen but you just never know.
Once tried to go that way with Jeep, just too narrow. You are really lucky and agree with you on the Lord's plans! The other route past crystal is just beautiful, as well! We miss our Colorado days a lot.
I live in Colorado. The rocky mountains are very unforgiving on a dirtbike. Those sharp edge rocks will jolt your bike left or right and the suspension barely works right. I stick to the less rocky trails for this exact reason. The hill climb right before the crash made it worse. Probably going a little too fast for the conditions to make it up the hill, hit the sharp edged rocks causing a little blip of the throttle, then the rear suspension not absorbing it properly bouncing up and down causing no brakes and very little control of steering. Glad you made it out alive.

Just cause a gps says turn left now, doesn’t mean you should listen. Lol.

That is talent!
Holy shit, I used to ride my dirt bike on this all the time when I lived in Crested Butte. I'm super happy you are alive man.
Every experienced rider knows that feeling, when you're on for a big fall and lots of pain. Cheers to him for shaking off a huge fall.
What's he shaking off? His arm and leg from the rest of his body? (Please understand the joke)
He said "KEEP RIGHT" not hard left.
Signs said “ NO LEFT TURN HERE”
Signs said “DEATH LEFT”
🤔 which way should I go... Left? Or Left?
He went LEFT 🙄
😁
Shame of the bike. But what a story to tell. Holy shit.

No that wouldn’t easily happen to someone. Because 1) he had no business being up there. 2) if you know you can’t ride youre not gonna go riding in that terrain. I could tell as soon as the video started that this guy shouldn’t have been up there. He had no confidence.

Man I’m glad your ok after that one
Thanks Seven!
That definitely could have been worse. Also glad he's ok, and thanks for posting the time of the incident
seven cureton man that’s crazy glad he ok! I’ll stick to MX thank you very much
Rick every time I watch this my heart stops man. Again, truly glad you ended up ok.
This is going to go viral soon. Glad you’re miraculously okay! That was a hell of a fall
I'm sorry to hear that what exactly happened to you sir
👏👏👏 captain obvious, but if he's gonna preach to people, better danged we'll be prepared to answer the one question that'd be on everyone's mind.
So glad you're alright and nothing happened to you. I cringed and had flashbacks, but would live to see some pictures of the bike following the aftermath. Wouldn't ask if I didn't know the details on how your health was. But since we all know you're back on a bike some pictures would be lovely. Rock on brotha. Again glad to see you're in good health.

Hey, its Donut.
Wonder why you all surprised! Donut´s preferred means of transport is the motorcycle - as we all know. ;-)
This is crazy, it's like a hollywood short film from the decent with the little slip for foreshadowing, the anxiety and anticipation at the bottom, then the inevitable fall and fight for survival through the chaos.
And his bike didn't want to start up as they were heading back
That is the highest jump ever achieved at this epic jumpable swimming hole in Colorado. Congrats on achieving the new record!!!

The scenery just gorgeous...
Glad you folks are okay! Gotta be super extra careful, not much room for error.
DUDE!! That is some official bragging rights, right there! Im pretty sure he hit two? shelves before plunging into ice cold water? He was cussing on the way down even though he had like half a second of time after that last shelf impact. Im impressed
I am so glad you came out of that ok. That shows a part of riding that most don't think about until it happens. Thank you for sharing.
Anyways, Thank God that you are alive, it's unbelievable that you are still alive 👍
someone else has hinted a similar guess...hmm...anyone??
Rick Hogge practice more in a wider area with the technical terrain. Clutch time or momentum, balance and looking ahead to sight your line in will help. I ride with momentum and line picking since you get beat up less. It helps skip over every little bump. Your body will get less fatigued on longer rides for sure.
A re-valve would help a LOT for riding rocks.
I had a nice cold beer waiting for him back at the truck, since then we've been brothers for life even though we only personally met on that one trip 😆
Have ridden through this are many times, it is actually easier to go a little fast through there as it gets the suspension to move instead of deflect. Rule #1 in Colorado mountain riding is always to fall into the hill if one is gonna fall 😂
Glad you are OK!
That water looked fresh and cold.

Man! I puckered up just watching this. I am happy you lived to tell the tale.

YO SUB D WADDUP WHERES ARSON
Glad you escaped without injury. That was a scary looking episode. Stay safe out there, beautiful trail!!!
@3:58 "Give me one minute" should turn on all RED lights of ANY tour guide to stop the trip immediately.
yes, it´s so simple.
Do you even ride?
Always look where you want to go. That last throttle blip did you in. Glad you're ok.
... Okay, I have read enough comments, glad you survived.
How long was it before your riding partner came back looking for you?
How did you (and friends) get the bike out?
How long did that take?
Thanks.

Riding beyond one’s skill level is a dangerous game. A man’s got to know his limitations. Very fortunate to have no injuries...
Limits? I remember when I was young just trying to keep up with my dad from trail head to trail head, limits are obstacles meant to be overcome.
@@stereotypicalwhitemale848, I’m sure your Dad, while challenging your skills, wouldn’t have subjected you to a possible death risk. My point is, one needs to gain experience where death is not a possible outcome.

he was probably like "wow thank god there was water"...2 seconds later "oh F$%& im in water, in riding gear "
It’s crazy watching videos like these knowing what is going to happen but the rider doesn’t know and it’s just a normal day for them
I live in Colorado.
Just glad you got out of there alive! What an "oh shit!" moment!
I love the "I'm going down!" As he's halfway down falling off the cliff, it's like yeah bud I'm pretty sure you're already on your way down haha
