Great way to handle a negative confrontation. This could have easily escalated into something much worse but you were polite and in the end it paid off. So many times being kind and courteous gets you so much further than the alternative.
Was she in the wrong then!?. If so, she shouldn't be telling you to tell others there is no through route and you've got a one time pass!? It's not unheard of for locals to change signs themselves to put things how they want them..💁♂️
Diffused the situation!!! Lmao. The situation wouldn't have existed if the prick wasn't on the land in the first place. Her concern was one of worrying fouls and live stock and as you know, coming from an agricultural background, can be an offence all on its own. He was wrong to go onto the land once it was made clear that there were livestock wondering freely. And at the beginning!!! Such arrogance, personally I'd have buried you mate.
Driverguy999 It's a road, he's allowed to ride there, she just thinks she is the gatekeeper. She shouldn't be allowed to let her livestock run freely near a public road, who cares for an animal when a human life could be at risk. I'd go out of my way to constantly use that road now, just to fuck her off.
Powerless lmao. Sorry but that shit doesn't wind me up. However I live in hope that you meet someone who is capable of putting your arrogance in it's proper place. Pity it can't be me but hey it's not a perfect world. Ask the farmer!
I'm getting sick of these landowners who are always trying to block off public access by using their own property as a barrier to public land - they put up gates - de-activate public roads payed for by tax payers, and place signs no trespassing signs in places that are in fact open to public - good for you for standing up to this sort of crap it's getting worse and these types of landowners need a wake up call.
What a wonderful way to manage a potentially difficult situation. I admire the courtesy that you showed to the lady, and the hand written card was lovely to see. Well done.
You are truly my damn hero, how you manage to turn someone as enraged and hell-bent on having their way into someone laughing and shaking hands with you via your choice of words is nothing short of poetic. If everyone was like yourself, I'm sure none of this byway shit would even need to be in place!
Kill em with kindness!! Wish more people were like this guy, the world would be a better place. Way to keep your cool and represent that there are respectful bikers out there.
Very well handled. In most cases like this now days people would just fly off the handle, ignore the lady and cause bad rep for riders. You done well to keep in control
Well done on the handling the Lady. may be it is about time the local Council, went & stuck a ORPA sign on that gate, this would then stop her trying it on.
A role model indeed. If you are 100% confident in the lane you are driving, stay calm, you will generally come out of the confrontation on top. If you need to turn back do so , but be exhaustive in your reasoning first. Well done sir.
First I thought she was being genuine. Eventually I realised she was trying it on. You were calm but stood your ground and tried to show her she was wrong. Well done. Land owners must realise that when they buy land that straddles a right of way, people are going to want to traverse it.
Smashing way to speak with this lady. Having ridden solo and with the TRF years ago, I can agree that speaking with landowners at every opportunity almost always clears the air about right of access for 2 wheeled vehicles on clearly indicated byways (some folk - trf riders included - forget that horse-drawn carts sometimes only have 2 wheels as well!) Stay safe and ride safe.
Most British things don’t end like this. Granted not likely to end in severe violence but in U.K. there’s a lot of what you call Karen’s. Many don’t back down even when one is polite and it’s all too common to have people acting aggressively in manner
I walked the Imber path around Salisbury Plain a few years back and the signs didn't match the GPS, so I knocked on someones door and asked. Apparently some farmers don't like you using public paths on THEIR land, so they rearrange the signs!! Well handled!
Why do people with horses think the countryside is exclusively for them - and that their half ton of horse does no damage yet a lightweight motorbike is going to rip the ground up ?
This guy is a spot on image of a proper motorbike rider not all these people thinking that just because they are on a bike they are ten foot tall and bullet proof. He deserves a congratulation on how calm he acts with this lady and from his other videos he presents this politeness in every way.
Nicely handled. Had to do the same with a very irate farmer a while back with @ExeterRider when Calimoto marked a farm track as a track, track. Won't be trusting that again!
Since when have farms been quiet places? I guess you don't spend much time on them! NB - there were no livestock and the road through the land is public.
WiltshireByways well you’d guess wrong, the tranquility of a farm depends entirely on how it’s running. I could have sworn she said there was livestock but hey ho, Not trying to pick a fight cause having watched a few of your videos you’re clearly not doing anything to rile people up on purpose.. however surely you have to be able to see it from her point of view? She’s lived there for 50 years, a public right of way is fine but there’s a massive difference between someone walking that route and someone using it on a dirt bike The point in trying to make is this is in no way comparable to living near an airport and not expecting planes, I’d suggest it’s almost the polar opposite. I work on farms - what on earth would I know? The road (not a right of way) was there in 1883 when OS surveyed it for their 1884 25" map, so has been in use well beyond the lifetime of any living person. Whilst the lady did say that the livestock were present in the fields, the subsequent video (also on this channel) confirms that no animals were present.
Kinda funny, in Belgium we have what is called a "servitude weg" which basically means it can be private property but the owner is required by law to keep it open as a road to the public. Oh my good lord these need to go viral. Or mainstream in some way just as a lesson to people about how to deal with a situation. I'm going through these videos now and am in awe.
I think you are being generous. The "misinformed" landowner was happy it seemed to be and stay misinformed. If it was little effort on your part to confirm the status of the way then it would have been just as simple for the landowner but it seems not in her best interests for 50 years. Personally I would have accepted her position to reduce confrontation, not taken her offer of access to make sure her blockade of the right of way was the result of the exchange then via registered post contacted her with a copy the documentation confirming the right of access and that you would be taking advantage of that access in the future. The video footage is all to the good in these situations.
+terrortorn We were just about to turn around when she had her change of heart, which - in retrospect - change my perception of her position. I think it inconceivable that she doesn't know it to be a road.
Killing with kindness... Had similar situation where police stopped us entering a legal right of way because the landowner (a woman) threatened to shoot any motorcycles that used it. My suggestion that the police should be dealing with the person issuing the threats should be dealt with was ignored by the police.
WIltshireByways in America this all would have ended differently. pretty sure the lady would've had a broken nose and the riders would've crashed the gate and continued on
Absolutely love this video and have shared it to my Facebook page. You’re absolutely right about a bunch of idiots ruining life for us country folk but like you show, we can’t tar everyone on a crosser with the same brush. You are a gentleman sir.
Cheers John. I didn't push them on the sign because I didn't want it to become a contentious issue. Being impassable by car or carriage means it's only really us trail riders who might be confused by the signing. I think everyone else concerned knows full well that it carries vehicular rights. Maybe someone in Gloucestershire could help?
Very well handled, I will learn from this as I didn't do as well in a similar situation, I did get a bit funny at a van refusing to move from a byway entrance up by sailsbury, sat in it might I add
Good on you, brother! Wish we had these kind of laws here in the State, especially your Right to Roam laws. Either way, you doing proper by riders with your attitude and politeness.
WiltshireByways Thank you for your kind actions! I don't even live in the UK, but goodwill and kindness is worldwide. As hippie-dippie as that sounds, lol.
Not when I last used the road, some nine months ago. There are other unmade roads within the county that are signed as bridleways and footpaths, though thankfully they're not.
Thank you. I've chatted with the lady and her husband a few times since recording the video and they're fine with me now, though always appear if they hear my motorcycle.
Expertly handled. If only more people could deal with confrontation so calmly and politely. The gushingly thankful card was a bit much though -- I'd have written one to the authorities complaining about the incorrect signing. :-)
You appear to have the legal right to ride along that path and could have insisted and pushed your way through. What you actally did was show restraint and speak calmly and logically to the lady. I think the confrontation was handled very well, considering. I am glad that, on this side of the pond, we don't see the need to wave firearms at each other to resolve disputes.
Thanks, though I had no right to move her even if I had felt so inclined. Touching her would have technically been an assault/affray, which is a much more serious offence than Wilful Obstruction of the Highway, which I think in this instance would probably have not been worth police time.
A byway in the United Kingdom is a track, often rural, which is too minor to be called a road. These routes are often unsurfaced, typically having the appearance of 'green lanes'. Despite this, it is legal (but may not be physically possible) to drive any type of vehicle along certain byways, the same as any ordinary tarmac road. In 2000 the legal term 'restricted byway' was introduced to cover rights of way along which it is legal to travel by any mode (including on foot, bicycle, horse-drawn carriage etc.) but excluding 'mechanically propelled vehicles'. On 2 May 2006 the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 reclassified all remaining Roads Used as Public Paths as restricted byways. The public's rights along a restricted byway are to travel:[1] on foot on horseback or leading a horse by vehicle other than mechanically propelled vehicles (thus permitting e.g. bicycles, horse-drawn carriages, to travel along restricted byways), except in certain circumstances.
Mate just take an OS map with you to show people. I have woodlands in Kent and the TRF used to insist that the bridle path through it was a BOAT. It most certainly wasn't nor has it ever been. I used to get fed up with similar confrontation. It took council intervention and police signage to resolve the issue. Cheers.
I love the way everyone praises her for being so amicable when in fact her actions are disgraceful!! She has absolutely no right to deny access to the public right of way
I do not understand why people want to upset landowners, who's animals are in their own fields, for what reason, a few minutes churning up their tracks, how would you like it if it was your garden/land?
It's a public road, as the land owner well knew. Most farmers and land owners respect public rights across their land. As it happened, there were no animals in the field (it had not been churned up). She has lied.
Good guy Biker! :D really like to see someone that polite talking out problems in stead of making problems! :D like a guy earlier commented "10/10"!! ;D
all of these people commenting saying that we would have shot you yes in your country but we are not in your country were in uk before you comment do some research and bike users are they really commiting an offence does it hurt anyone because they like a nice ride in the country just like people like to ride there horses in the country there is a minority that will go through there tear the grass up but to be honest grass grows back not to be a arsehole but its not like there destroying her crop they even had the politeness too still talk to her in a polite manor when she knew she was in the wrong because why didnt she take his plate or go get her beloved maps too prove she was right he did so yes you can have a go at the bikers but they had there proof and if she didnt believe them then she should of got the maps out and proved them wrong because how can you prove facts in an arguement with no evidence and top blokes these are
Well done on staying so cool. Unfortunately we do have motorcyclists riding reckless that do tar us all with the same brush. And as a result we have residents on routes at the end of their tethers at times. Remaining calm and cool and polite, and proceeding. Well done.
Your knowledge and research is impressive. Your manners and basic decency are exemplary. Perhaps this, clearly distressed woman, really cannot cope with her property being on a public road. I feel for her but she needs to accept that the world does not revolve around her and that other people have rights as well. He doesn't need her permission to go about his lawful business. I can understand that no-one wants to encourage high powered enduro machines screaming through as if there is a race on - the vast majority of trail riders I encounter when walking the old byways are super considerate and as quiet as practicable - they also do a good job of keeping roads maintained.
Nicole K The OS disclaimer reads: "The exact nature of the rights on these routes and the existence of any restrictions must be checked with the local highway authority." This road has been regularly used by all types of users for many years and a recent (last week for another TH-cam user) revealed that there are no legal restrictions regarding use. Please read the video description for additional information, including the respective road numbers used on its entry on the Council's list of streets maintainable at public expense. Thank you for your interest.
Nicole K Understood, and agreed. Vehicle users especially, as transgression is likely to constitute an offence, rather than something dealt with informally.
you're like the landowner whisperer
Brenda Quinch You need more thumbs up!
😂
Now that made me proper laugh out loud! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣💪💪💪. Great comment.
Nice touch with the note too. BZ fella.
This people is what we call "civilized".
That kids, is how you handle difficult situations.
This video has restored my faith in humanity a little!! Good Bless for being kind and respectful to the elderly! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for your kind words.
Great way to handle a negative confrontation. This could have easily escalated into something much worse but you were polite and in the end it paid off. So many times being kind and courteous gets you so much further than the alternative.
Well done that man,she only had a pair of kings and you had pocket aces with charm🤩
Was she in the wrong then!?. If so, she shouldn't be telling you to tell others there is no through route and you've got a one time pass!?
It's not unheard of for locals to change signs themselves to put things how they want them..💁♂️
Its nice to see someone handle conflict like. She was raged at first. Well done on diffusing the situation!
Wow someone sounds pessimistic!
Diffused the situation!!! Lmao. The situation wouldn't have existed if the prick wasn't on the land in the first place. Her concern was one of worrying fouls and live stock and as you know, coming from an agricultural background, can be an offence all on its own. Driverguy999
It's a road, he's allowed to ride there, she just thinks she is the gatekeeper. She shouldn't be allowed to let her livestock run freely near a public road, who cares for an animal when a human life could be at risk. I'd go out of my way to constantly use that road now, just to fuck her off.

You guys did that the right way. Respect gets you all kinds of access.
There is something really lovely about us English people sometimes.

fernieboy100 Same thing happens in the States. Two tracks that are public slowly start popping up gates from land owners.
What a wonderful way to manage a potentially difficult situation. I admire the courtesy that you showed to the lady, and the hand written card was lovely to see. Well done.
Fair play to you for the polite way you dealt with this, always nice to come to a good mutual understanding, good stuff.
Rarely does one come out of these types of situations with both parties smiling. Nicely and inteliigently handled!
You are truly my damn hero, how you manage to turn someone as enraged and hell-bent on having their way into someone laughing and shaking hands with you via your choice of words is nothing short of poetic. you are excellent at de-escelating and communicating. wish there were more like you. keep it up.

you will find she probably put the other signs on herself to justify turning people away

so brilliant how the British and you deal with these things all the american bike videos end in violence or running off away from the cops
Most British things don’t end like this. Granted not likely to end in severe violence but in U.K. there’s a lot of what you call Karen’s. Many don’t back down even when one is polite and it’s all too common to have people acting aggressively in manner

Good to see a civilised outcome here. I hope she enjoyed a cup of tea after starring on this TH-cam clip.
These people just don't want to share the countryside.
Why do people with horses think the countryside is exclusively for them - and that their half ton of horse does no damage yet a lightweight motorbike is going to rip the ground up ?
What a great thread, sums up so much about so many things. Wonder if its signed correctly now.
This guy is a spot on image of a proper motorbike rider not all these people thinking that just because they are on a bike they are ten foot tall and bullet proof. He deserves a congratulation on how calm he acts with this lady and from his other videos he presents this politeness in every way.
Very well handled mate, you just earned yourself a new subscriber!
Made me shed tears!
Just kidding. But I did like how that all ended. You were raised properly, Jim.
bronxborn70 Thanks :)
Nicely handled. Had to do the same with a very irate farmer a while back with @ExeterRider when Calimoto marked a farm track as a track, track. Won't be trusting that again!
beautifully handled mate,if there were more bikers like you we wouldnt get a bad wrap
Thanks chap, we're on the same side.
Exactly right mate.
Braden Morrish You seem like a real Nob head mate.
Even though my comment wasn't towards you, anyone complaining about dirtbikers being too noisy is a pussy in my book
You handle these situations perfectly. you make them calm, and then prov to them you are right.
Well played. Decent people coming to a compromise. Good on you all, landowner included. If only more people were so inclined.
If you choose to live near an airport... expect to see planes!
Quite!
And if you live in a nice quiet farm in the middle of nowhere expect someone tearing it through your feilds full of livestock on a dirt bike??
Since when have farms been quiet places? I guess you don't spend much time on them! NB - there were no livestock and the road through the land is public.
WiltshireByways well you’d guess wrong, the tranquility of a farm depends entirely on how it’s running.
I could have sworn she said there was livestock but hey ho,
Not trying to pick a fight cause having watched a few of your videos you’re clearly not doing anything to rile people up on purpose.. however surely you have to be able to see it from her point of view?
She’s lived there for 50 years, a public right of way is fine but there’s a massive difference between someone walking that route and someone using it on a dirt bike
The point in trying to make is this is in no way comparable to living near an airport and not expecting planes, I’d suggest it’s almost the polar opposite. That’s all
I work on farms - what on earth would I know? Well done to you. Very polite and handled so well. The card was a very nice gesture too. Enjoy your green landing chaps.
Kinda funny, in Belgium we have what is called a "servitude weg" which basically means it can be private property but the owner is required by law to keep it open as a road to the public.
You try putting up a gate or blocking passage... you get fined big time and if you keep it up you might lose ownership on the road itself...
'Weg' is the Old English word for 'Way' - we have a glorious, common history.
@@WiltshireByways that just blew my mind! very cool :)
Well handled. However some places are incorrectly signed on purpose by I wonder who... I think you may have met her.
You did a great job handling the situation, signed card is a nice touch:)
When they laughed at the end it made me smile
respect to you sir for respecting others and doing your homework first
Oh my good lord these need to go viral. Or mainstream in some way just as a lesson to people about how to deal with a situation.
I'm going through these videos now and am in awe.

I couldn't of handled that better myself, did she live in that little caravan?
Gentlemen I applaud you both.
Is this just a competition to see how many times you can say "bridleway"
Curious....I'm guessing the landowner (and others) are concerned about people tearing up turf and not closing gate behind them?
Those are both fairly common concerns - I think this lady simply didn't like motorcycles.
You sir, are a very wise cookie!
Well done on staying so cool. Unfortunately we do have motorcyclists riding reckless that do tar us all with the same brush. And as a result we have residents on routes at the end of their tethers at times. Remaining calm and cool and polite, and proceeding. Well done.
Thank you, though the issue here was the resident (falsely) claiming that no public road existed.
Thank you for your kind, reasoned words across several videos. The very best of wishes to you!
OS Maps carry the dislaimer that they are not authorative over rights of way. They cannot be used to support this activity.
Nicole K The OS disclaimer reads:
"The exact nature of the rights on these routes and the existence of any restrictions must be checked with the local highway authority."
This road has been regularly used by all types of users for many years and a recent (last week for another TH-cam user) revealed that there are no legal restrictions regarding use.
Please read the video description for additional information, including the respective road numbers used on its entry on the Council's list of streets maintainable at public expense.
Thank you for your interest.
Your point is well made. My comment was intended to remind people that they should not use an OS map as their sole authority.

Understood, and agreed. Vehicle users especially, as transgression is likely to constitute an offence, rather than something dealt with informally.
