So happy to hear you graduate soon! Being an RNFA is the best thing we have done with our careers. So much autonomy, and we get to do really cool things everyday!

If you have not already, could you do a video on the difference between a RNFA vs NPFA? Thank you!😊

I can’t get a definitive answer (mostly because I think hospitals are all different) but can an RNFA also scrub and circulate when needed? I feel like most RN’s who go for their RNFA have likely done both circulating and scrubbing in some capacity. Feel like it’s a great way to market yourself and it’s helpful to the hospital. (Not at the same time, I’m saying like you may assist in a few surgeries in a room, then may be used to lunch a scrub or circulator)

Every entity is different. But yes, absolutely we can help with staffing too. I do know some places might pay a different rate if they utilize the rnfa as staff for the day. Where we practice, that is not the case. If we are free to help give lunches. we do, but still get paid as an FA. Which is nice!

Could you do a video about the structure of a RNFA program? I’m a circulator in the OR on the orthopedic team but I have no scrub experience. Would I need to have prior scrub experience or does the RNFA program for novice beginners as well?

Absolutely, we will do a quick video soon! But in short, you don't NEED to have scrub experience, however, not having it would make it very difficult. Especially since often times we step in for the scrub if they need help.

I’m currently an OR nurse. What’s the best way to transition to RNFA?

Are you at a hospital that utilizes RNFAs? Our first suggestion is to talk to your educator and see if you would be able to do your clinical hours there, on your day off of course. Next, if you know you can do clinical there--start talking to the surgeons you have good relationships with. Tell them you are interested and you need to do a clinical with surgeons. Hopefully, they offer to help! Some schools help with clinical placement, but for the most part, it is on you to find placement.
Are you in a major city? We are in Philadelphia and know there are many hospitals here that use RNFAs.

Is it mandatory to complete preoperative nurse certification before applying to RNFA. And how long is the RNFA program

RNFA program takes about 18 months to complete. It is mandatory to have your CNOR certification before you complete the program and in many schools it’s mandatory before you even apply.

I am an ER nurse and would like to transition to a RNFA. Where would I begin and what are the steps to getting into and finishing a RNFA program?
