There's not much they could have done to save that guy. There were two of them. Usually, if it was one you'd choke it out with a rope or a leash. The other one made that a problem. Unfortunately the tool for the job, a gun, was denied to them. You can stab them with a knife and they won't let go. They are bred to kill bears. They latch on and don't let go despite pain.

I agree, there being two makes it enormously difficult and it's a complete joke that you can't even carry pepper spray in the UK. However, the incident went on for a really long time and I think they had time to at least try and coordinate something better than what they did. At least try.
