37:20 LOVED that metaphor of the stained glass window vs clear window for prose. Incredible and so true. And I can appreciate both versions when reading.
1:49:48 Ey thats me! Thanks for the amazing podcast guys. Ps: Just wanted to mention, the book that changed my life is “Mans search for meaning - Viktor Frankl”. Fantastic read.
Yes. Come back to New Zealand. If you want to spend the night in an isolated penguin colony where the penguin neighborhoods are all named after fantasy worlds, you are welcome to stay with us! We have a Roshar, Shire, Naboo, Scadeial and many more. Pohatu penguins NZ.
1:25:46 That was me! Haha, thanks for including my question. Didn't realize I misspelled alternatively lol, oh well. You guys gave a fantastic answer though, keep up the great work and here is to 50,000k subscribers!!
1:20:41 I would also add, when I advise students on what degree they should choose, I tell them to look at three things: (1) What are you good at, (2) What do you like?, (3) Is there a market for it? I would say, having two of these three things will place you in a good position. For example if you are good at something and theirs a market for it, you will find some level of success. If you have 1 or less of these checked off, it is a sign to go to a career counselor.
I believe liking (not necessarily loving) is a prerequisite, you don’t want to work a job you dislike for 40+ years. There are almost always jobs where these 3 circles connect
Austin, absolutely agree with you on the wife, daughter, mother order. Part of being a good father is teaching your children through example how women ought to be treated. But good discussion overall from you both. I like this channel b/c you guys get into deeper conversations beyond fantasy books. :)
Size and Strength: Adult Komodo dragons can weigh over 150 pounds and reach lengths of up to 10 feet. They are extremely strong, with powerful muscles especially in their jaws and legs. Speed: Despite their size, Komodo dragons can move very quickly over short distances, capable of sudden bursts of speed. Bite and Venom: Their bites are very dangerous, not only because of the sharp teeth and strong jaws but also due to the venom they inject. This venom can cause shock, blood loss, and severe tissue damage. Durability: They have tough, scaly skin that provides a degree of protection against physical attacks. Attempting to fight a Komodo dragon would be not only reckless but also likely to result in serious injury or death. In encounters with these creatures, it's best to maintain a safe distance and avoid any interaction.
Big lizard, strong teeth, strong legs. It run fast, bite hard. Bite has poison, makes big sick, much pain. Skin hard like rock, not easy hurt. You try fight, you get hurt bad or no wake up. Better run, stay far. No fight big lizard. Stay alive.
Very indepth response to self publishing vs traditional! Love it! Congrats on the 25k, cant wait to see your channel grow. Its been a staple part of my routine now haha!
No way a human could take a Komodo dragon. They’re gigantic, have sharp claws, have a poisonous bite that can be lethal within hours, and their body is covered in armored scales that is essentially chain mail.
Thank you for answering my question! 😁 Regarding your komodo dragon friend, I had to tell a friend of mine that his answer of “cheetah” was absolutely ridiculous.
Your discussion about education reminded me of the This is Water commencement speech David Foster Wallace (author of Infinite Jest) gave. I recommend everyone who hasn't listened to this speech listen to it! I always go back and revisit it.
51:27 I believe you don’t mean Ryan Cahill (the author of the Bound and the Broken, a very very chunky epic fantasy series). It sounds more like Will Wight, author of the Cradle series? Probably wrong, just thought I’d share
Yes, your friend is indeed an idiot for thinking he can fight a Komodo dragon 🤣 Also, that was a beautiful answer to end the Q&A with! Thanks for giving us nosy people all the juicy answers we wanted, this was sooo fun!!
I have never once bought TH-camr merch and I am a new reader but Richard saying “I’m being honest with you buy it it gives us money” I will be buying a bookmark now currently using a note card as my book mark haha I am also from VA!
You guys, especially Richard, HAVE to read Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay. It is an extraordinary standalone and utterly breathtaking. Would love to watch a review.
I like how you were trying to remember Cradle talking about shorter self published books, and mentioned Ryan Cahill whose latest novel is over 400k words long(he has shorter novellas in his series but still funny)
Do you ever read a book, and think: Wow, that was way too happy. There's pain, suffering, and trauma there, but it could be sadder. Do you like reading about lonely, depressed six year olds? Are you okay with puppies dying? Most importantly: Do you like your escapism to be sadder than your actual life? Then I have the book series for you! Robin Hobb is both my favorite author and the author that has hurt me (and her characters) the most. In all seriousness, RoTE is really good on so many levels. The characters (in my opinion) are some of the best in the genre. The writing is wonderful. The pacing is fine, though quite slow. The world is interesting. And it hits you in the feels every single time. Though now that I think about it, reading RoTE might be a bad thing. All other books will feel worse in comparison. Anyway, it's great to see you at 25k, fingers crossed you get to RoTE by a million! : )
Guys, in case you didnt know there is a LOTR equivalent in the asian fantasy genre - also known as Wuxia and that is Legend of the Condor Heroes by Jin Yong. A gold standard and highly recommend read at least for the culture
Since you talked about how more serialized works do well in self publishing, would self publishing present a good opportunity to create a western equivalent to japanese light novels?
Non fiction recommendation I think you guys would like: The Tiger by John Valliant. It’s a true story of a man eating Siberian tiger in 90’s Eastern Russia who is hunting and killing villagers. A villager then sets out to track down the tiger and kill it. It’s a wild ride
A great nonfiction read is bernard cornwells waterloo book. Because he has written so much historical fiction, his nonfiction feels like fiction in all the good ways
I read Kings of the Wyld last month, I think I heard of it from you guys. I HATED it. So hard. I'm wondering now if anyone in your patreon book club will have the same issues with it I did. I think this is the first time I've thrown a book.
"... i mean the true answer is i'd wanna be known as being a good father". RICHARD, i say this with all due respect, but that is the last answer i expected to come out of you but this makes me more of a fan of 2toramble :'"""""""")
If I had an opportunity to redesign the human body, I would change the human eye so the irises would be completely circular instead of hexagonal. The lungs would be made much larger. They would turn upside down to make way for more oxygen. More oxygen means more neuron activity and thus more brain activity. The spinal column would be made stronger. The brain would be a bit larger. A bone would be added to the middle of the nose, so peoples´nasal features would resemble those of Death on Death conquers the Battlefield. The human nose would become more symmetrical and stronger as a result of the change. No need for two thumbs. Man is already Earth´s apex animal - but in fact an omnivore. Another reason for why I would change the eyes is so it would be easier to paint them while painting portraits. The eyes would be able to perceive light at more wavelengths. Unfortunately for some this would result in multiple cases of pov.
Austin @ 1:55:57 - "we'll see" Me - wait what? we will???????? 😂😂😂😂 So now I expect next weeks podcast to just be a street beefs video of Austin going toe to toe with a large doe 🤣
I’m only beating it with a weapon. Barehanded I’m handing that fucking dinosaur the belt. Love the podcast, found it recently and have been watching the back log.
I'm from New Zealand! If you ever want any tips or tricks on best places to go Lord of the Rings themed... or not! Let me know. Always love to help someone out. Congratulations on 25,000 by the way!
HAHAHAHA, RICHARD AND I BOTH HATE JD SALINGER! I hate Catcher in the Rye. I was just about to ask your thoughts on Catcher in the Rye- JD Salinger is just stupidly pessimistic in my opinion. I personally really dislike how he writes and how he just seems to have no kindness in his stories. And I don’t mind pessimism but still. Also, YOU GOT TO READ BRAVE NEW WORLD IN SCHOOL?! I wish I had the chance to read that in school.
"... i mean the true answer is i'd wanna be known as being a good father". RICHARD, i say this with all due respect, but that is the last answer i expected to come out of you but this makes me more of a fan of 2toramble :'"""""""")

Congrats on 25k! 🎉The BEST place for book recommendations
Thanks so much
I’ve been waiting for this!

My alteration to the human body would be to have memory loss on command so I could reread my favorite books again and again.
You wouldn't remember the joy of having read the book before, so you'd be back at square 1
The answer to that last question Richard is what I’m striving for as my first baby is due this June! Great episode guys!

Ah thankya, you too!

Thanks a bunch 😁😁
No way a human could take a Komodo dragon. They’re gigantic, have sharp claws, have a poisonous bite that can be lethal within hours, and their body is covered in armored scales that is essentially chain mail.
Totally forgot that I posted a question but I'm glad to see that it sparked an awesome insight in y'all's opinions!
Awesome part 2 Q&A! Love the NZ support, you guys MUST come visit and then proceed to move here
I’m hear to recommend that you guys try Jade City again
Seconded!💚
They didn't like jade city? 😱 it's one of my favourite series
"I would love to go to Hobbiton with you." The new I would have really liked just doing laundry and taxes with you 😆
Thank you for answering my question! 😁 Regarding your komodo dragon friend, I had to tell a friend of mine that his answer of “cheetah” was absolutely ridiculous.
Also, regarding the name, I made it in like 4th grade, so I’m aware it’s ridiculous as well☠️😂
A CHEETAH! Our friend and your friend would be great friends. Delusional buddies
Rich! Looking good man, keep doing whatever you're doing.
Austin's Linkin Park bits in the Empire of Silence review was GOLD 😂
I’m still convinced I can take the dragon. Ty for the shoutout😂
Your discussion about education reminded me of the This is Water commencement speech David Foster Wallace (author of Infinite Jest) gave. I recommend everyone who hasn't listened to this speech listen to it! I always go back and revisit it.
I love his speeches and interviews but I am so intimidated by his books. Infinite Jest is gathering dust on my shelves for years now
Congrats on the success and can’t wait to see what the future holds!
Thank you!

Thanks for watching!!
African Fantasy - "Children of Blood & Bone" & " Black Leopard, Red Wolf" are both supposed to be very good! (Both on my tbr)
1:07:00 I NEEEEEEEDD IIIIIIIITTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!
I have never once bought TH-camr merch and I am a new reader but Richard saying “I’m being honest with you buy it it gives us money” I will be buying a bookmark now currently using a note card as my book mark haha

You guys, especially Richard, HAVE to read Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay. It is an extraordinary standalone and utterly breathtaking. Would love to watch a review.
I have so much fun with these types of video😂

: )
I (austin) very much want to get to reading AA - especially with focus on characters, I might rly love it
For more African inspired fantasy: Black Leopard, Red Wolf was very cool and interesting but definitely a tough read
I loved that book cause it was so different, but definitely a lot of tough scenes.
You mentioned both First Law and audio vs physical books, so I have to say First Law + Steven Pacey = 🥰🥰🥰
Ayy what city in VA u guys from?? Also from the state - Blacksburg moving to Arlington
Ok, that ending was funny 🤣
Safe Hold series by David Weber.... You guys will not be disappointed
Guys, in case you didnt know there is a LOTR equivalent in the asian fantasy genre - also known as Wuxia and that is Legend of the Condor Heroes by Jin Yong. A gold standard and highly recommend read at least for the culture
still waiting for that top fantasy worlds to live in or whatever it was that I requested :)
Since you talked about how more serialized works do well in self publishing, would self publishing present a good opportunity to create a western equivalent to japanese light novels?
Oo interesting question - maybe theres a market for that
1:56:46 I think perhaps I could take on a small chihuahua
Non fiction recommendation I think you guys would like: The Tiger by John Valliant. It’s a true story of a man eating Siberian tiger in 90’s Eastern Russia who is hunting and killing villagers. A villager then sets out to track down the tiger and kill it. It’s a wild ride

A great nonfiction read is bernard cornwells waterloo book. Because he has written so much historical fiction, his nonfiction feels like fiction in all the good ways
Great pitch wow
This is going to bug me unless I ask, do you have the lightbringer books in the background out of order?
Yes, you found the easter egg, now we must change which book series goes out of order 🤌
Richard's got major Cenn Buie energy, the more that I think about it.
I read Kings of the Wyld last month, I think I heard of it from you guys. I HATED it. So hard. I'm wondering now if anyone in your patreon book club will have the same issues with it I did. I think this is the first time I've thrown a book.
We’ll definitely have a review on it! Very curious how the book club goes

X to doubt, F to pay respects. You almost had it.
Austin @ 1:55:57 - "we'll see"
Me - wait what? we will???????? 😂😂😂😂
So now I expect next weeks podcast to just be a street beefs video of Austin going toe to toe with a large doe 🤣
Lmao 😂
No way I'm beating a Komodo Dragon.
How would I redesign the human body? Cup holders.
This is it
When did the intro animation change, just every so slightly?
Just changed because our logo changed 🥂
When's malazan
I’m only beating it with a weapon. Barehanded I’m handing that fucking dinosaur the belt.
Love the podcast, found it recently and have been watching the back log.
🙏
Nice Bible pick
Your roommate is delusional , komodo dragons are straight up mini godzillas that are 1000% more deadly
If counting the lord of the rings as one book is cheating, counting the bible as one book is DEFINITELY cheating xD
😂
I'm from New Zealand! If you ever want any tips or tricks on best places to go Lord of the Rings themed... or not! Let me know. Always love to help someone out.
Congratulations on 25,000 by the way!
Thank you!!
I could stomp out a Komodo dragon easy
Unless you guys have trained for it your def not getting a crocodile
Justin is delusional and a komodo dragon would eat him

Yessss book gods content 💥💥💥💥
