    Also can we talk about how before everyone had access to books there was oral tradition. Stories were passed down from generation to generation orally for decades/centuries. It's okay to have a reading preference, but to say a way of reading isn't valid, that's not okay.

  • @siennablack4690
    @siennablack4690 4 ปีที่แล้ว +445

    saying audiobooks aren't "real" reading is ableist! People who are blind, dyslexic or who have learning disabilities (and probably so much more) benefit so much from audiobooks! It helps people who don't have access to literature gain access to it and you shouldn't shame anyone for that!

    • @EternallyEmma

      YES. I came here to write exactly this. People gatekeeping reading for the perfectly able is so ugly.

    • @siennablack4690
      @siennablack4690 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@EternallyEmma it absolutely is. it's also elitist, like, why wouldn't listening to the text be valued in the same way as reading it? Story telling was traditionally aural, so why is there this modern idea that that's a lesser way to consume stories?

      Yes, yes, yes. Also, on top of what you said:
      - Great option for individuals who have busy schedules that don't allow for designated reading time (multitasking!) (Edit: oops noelle mentions this in the video)
      - Great way to experience books that might be more difficult to focus on because of subject matter, etc (I often listen to nonfiction to comprehend it more)
      - Accessible choice for auditory listeners
      - Wonderful way to experience books written with specific dialects or accents that the reader may be unfamiliar with

    If you have ADHD you know what a LIFESAVER audiobooks are. I listen to audiobooks while reading the physical book and it means that I can actually concentrate for long enough to finish stuff and read as much as I wanna read. "Listening to an audiobook is cheating" wow, people get really crazy about books. Books are books, in whatever form, I love books and I still know no one cares that much.
    I love audioboooks, at first I didn't but they're so fucking great, I can do a million things while listening to an audiobook, I kinda feel productive lmao I've just finished listening to "It" and OH MY GOD, the narrator Steven Weber IS GREAT. I think I loved the book because I loved the way Steven told the story!! If anybody wants to read "It" I would highly recommend to listen to the audiobook!

With audiobooks, you get two forms of art- the author’s creation and the narrator’s performance. Plus if Neil Gaiman, himself propounds the virtues of audiobooks, then who am I to argue! I think audio books are great. As a teacher many of my students struggle with reading so one option that our library offers is playaways. When they check out a playaway book they also get a small device that has the audio version. This allows the students to follow along while they listen. They can learn how to pronounce words that they were not sure of and it increases their comprehension.

    I would love to see more audiobook videos because at uni it is so difficult to allow yourself time to read and really get into a book whereas Audiobooks you can just listen to on the go ❤️ I listened to it ends with us which was amazing! I don’t remember whether I listened to it in German or English

    YES audiobooks are 100% a form of reading!! Reading is simply consuming a story that’s been put in to words. Regardless of the format it should always be considered reading. Loved this video! 💕

    Educated by Tara Westover is one of my favourite audiobooks narrated by Tara herself. It was so fascinating listening to her life as a girl in a mormon survivalist family who didnt recieve an education and then went on to get a phd

    I read a lot of audiobooks because my eyesight is too “wonky” to read. I love them because they gave me acces to the knowledge I otherwise wouldn’t have had.

    Yes! I love your intro! My dad has always been an avid reader (he literally read every book in his middle school library), but he had craniotomy last year and reading taxes his brain too much. He love listening to audiobooks because he still gets to be in the story, safely.

    I'm Thinking of Ending Things is so good! It does not get the hype it deserves. I'm so happy you mentioned it! Also...holy cow the way the twist is revealed in the audiobook literally sent chills up my spine!

    I really love what you said about audiobooks being a valid way to consume books. Sometimes when I tell people about a good audiobook I read, I can see them judging. But audiobooks are great for a long commute 👍😊

    Thank you for making this video! I’m dyslexic and when I try to read, I barely understand it. Recently I started listening to audiobooks and for the first time in my life I can say that I love reading! In the past 5 months I’ve read 25 books and can’t wait to read(listen to) more! I finally feel like I’m able to educate myself. I’m learning new words, new ideas, new understandings of things I thought I understood, and so so much more.

    I love audiobooks because it's so convenient yeah it's nice to just have time to read but I feel like when you don't and even when you do audiobooks (depending on narrator) can add to the story and experience. It has also been helping me with learning how to pronounce things I especially notice this with fantasy books.

    Uuuuuugh 😫 rip TBR shelf. Once you start getting audiobooks from the library, you won't go back 👌 they are generally more available than the ebook too
