Some people can't distinguish voices well. It's actually a special ability to be able to hear other people's voices in your head when you're thinking about something they would say.
I feel like it'd be kind of weird to not recognize voices of people you've known for a while. Maybe that's just one of my random autism things. I don't think so though.

How about a bank teller who can identify the denomination of a coin by the sound it makes when it hits the floor? She even knows when she's being tricked with non-U.S. coinage. That's skill!
