Not just ”4 way shooting, Isaac bad” or ”ROR2 too floaty, its bad” Roguelike games are really deep and fun with alot of mechanics and if you just tip your toes on each one and say thats it, your not gonna make a good review.

That is what in hindsight makes them so fulfilling.

Placing RoR2 at 6th is actually criminal. I have about 230 hours in it and it is definitely my favourite rogue like. Just try to get characters and items, as theres characters and builds for everyone. The more you play, the better the game will get, be it new characters, items, build ideas, or just straight up experience with the game.
One rogue like that I've been loving recently (although in demo) is Balatro. Its a poker based rogue like where you have to earn chips by playing certain hands. The game tells you all the hands, and how to make them, and after you beat a stage, you get a Joker. The Jokers are whats really going to power you up, giving you bonuses for certain cards, or more money per turn. Theres also tarrot cards which are one time use and change up your deck a little. Its a really fun game, but can be a bit hard to get into.

I think, this might be a hot take, if a game doesn't hook you within the first 5-ish hours like they said then it's just not for them, movement in a 3D Game is huge and them saying it feeling off, just wont ever change and can be a dealbreaker to some. I myself love RoR2, I have uh too many hours I think on it and it never gets old, shoutout all my modders out there. But Yeah sometimes a game is just not for you and the placement is subjective. I'd probably put it 1-2 as well, just bc I love it so much.

When I discovered Isaac I spent atleast 2-3 hours each day for 4 months playing it. At one point I broke my hand and I still managed to continue playing it. It's just so sublime and intricate, like, there's no other roguelike with even a similar amount of content, like yes, hades is very polished but you cannot playit for 500 hours, you'd just prolly get bored at some point. This list so interesting coming from someone who loves Rougelikes/rougelites
Like most people I know that love this genre (Myself included) sees Gunfire Reborn as mediocre; And RoR2 is one of the best rougelike out there.
The floaty movement gives you so much control with mobility, one of the items you want in the game is an item that makes you way more floaty. Variety it offers run after run is way greater than in Gunfire Reborn.
I feel like the problem that people outside of gerne feel is being lost in the beginning; Ror2 just throws you out there, you don't which items are good and which to avoid, you don't know what you're building up to and many more. And it's why games like Hades that streamline your first run into it's most bare hooks people.

    • @phryd
      @phryd  ปีที่แล้ว +5

What you say does make a lot of sense. As someone who explores a lot of new games often for youtuber purposes, but also enjoyment, I don't want to always have to invest a lot of hours of playing and research just to enjoy a game. So I do appreciate the streamline and ease of access given to us by Hades.

You CAN win a trash run with just your skill, but you probably won't. You CAN lose a broken run, but you probably won't. started playing isaac in early 2022, and I got so addicted. I have around 960 hours in it now, and that number is only going up. what I love about it is how you can play it super casually as well as really try hard. you learn someting new in literally every run, even with 1000s of hours, but not knowing things doesn't stop you from winning. the amount of item variety, synergies, and enemies is second to none. as for the gameplay itself, the shooting is limiting, but it has a surprising amount of depth, utilizing the knockback to slip through tight gaps and angling your tears by giving them momentum.
in addtion, the game has a massive amount of achievements, most of them are really fun to go for and making progress towards 100% is really rewarding if that is something you care about. everyone i know who's played this game plays it on and off and then one day it clicks and they can't stop playing it for days or weeks. did i mention how every time you do something in game it unlocks a brand new item or game mechanic?
im honestly quite impressed if you're still reading this comment, but if you are, the point of this is to say that isaac is a lot better than it appears on the surface, especially if you get the repentance dlc, and worth giving another try.
even though i don't agree with all your opinions, i still liked the video, and i will be watching this channel in the future :)

Yeah it seems that everyone is saying you need to spend a lot more time playing and learning Isaac to enjoy it. I guess I get it but I highly doubt I'd ever do that. I just doesn't appeal to me and I don't feel like I really have the time for it either.

I totally get bouncing off a game lots of people like, I really did not get hades at all. But I think blaming this on the game being older and people still playing are doing so for nostalgia is silly. isaac is still beloved and maintains a huge community with consistently over 10000 concurrent players.
PS, I disagree with people saying you need to play the game a lot to enjoy it. the early win conditions are much more reasonable and help beginners learn the game without making it some daunting task that requires tons of game experience, which imo makes it one of the more accessible roguelikes
I know this just joins a sea of comments of people defending their favorite roguelikes, but hopefully this adds some unique insight and was worth your time reading

Fantastic video, very well done editing! But I would love a revisit of this after you put a little more time into some of these. A lot of them don't truly open themselves up until you've put decent time into them, and they all have "rules" to learn that allow you to optimize your runs kind of like Hades does just not as overtly obvious.
Enter the Gungeon for example has both synergies (where having two or more items will cause an extra effect to occur for one or both of them) and interactions that you learn as you progress, as well as being feasibly possible to beat the game with just your starting equipment so long as you get good at walking around bullets which makes even the worst luck manageable depending on how good you are

I highly recommend trying Isaac again, but downloading the External Item Descriptions, Mod Config Menu, and Stats+ mods from the Steam workshop before playing. This makes a description of every item appear when you are near them so you can decide if you'd like to pick it up or not. You can also use these mods to disable curses and identify pills. I felt essentially the same way about the game as you before these mods, now it's one of my favorites.

Although Im upset at your ROR2 ranking, I get it. Its definitely really weird because there is no other game like it. Your biggest enemy in the game is the timer and Monsoon really teaches you that. I too only played on Rainstorm for my first 25 hours and pretty much quit the game after beating it a couple times. Eventually came back on a hunch maybe a year later, played on Monsoon and it kind of just clicked to me. Actually understanding the game and getting consistent runs made me fall in love. Its extremely rewarding to be rewarded for your efficiency as well since no other game really has a difficulty system such as ROR2. I hope you give it a shot again and if you ever decide to play on Monsoon (which is the best part of the game) definitely focus on your movement above all else. Biggest tip I can give is to run in circles. Its obviously more nuanced than that, but its a good start.

I started playing the binding of Isaac about a year ago, so I can't really say I'm nostalgic for it, but I enjoy it as a game you don't need to commit time to play. Since the game is built off its simplicity, you don't need to invest a lot of time in a day to follow a story. You can take week long breaks from it and go back right where you left off. I feel like many of the other games on the list become too complex to really enjoy. Along with this, a big aspect that adds to Isaacs replayability is how the game genuinely feels more fun the more you play. The item pool increases after nearly every run changing the gameplay and making it feel fresh. This can go for most games on the list, but personally I feel Isaac does it the best. I tried to play every game on this list, but the only ones I found myself returning to were Isaac and enter the gungeon.

While being the definition of a casual player, you are still giving them rating. The first ten hours of roguelike is a tutorial my friend, its not the real game at that point. You cant judge the game if you not even 1/10 way to complete it.All you can afford in your video is saying your first imperession.Of course you will not like every single thing you play for the first time. When you talk about what you like about a game (especially in ror2, isaac, Etg), you often retell the text from the game’s page on steam. This suggests that you played the game because “well damn, we need to insert more games into the video and don’t care how much I understand what I’m talking about.”I hope that all this was just misunderstanding from my perspective, but this is what I feel after watching this video.

I don't think you've very wrong. I had the idea of making this video, so as I stated in the video... I just gathered the games that other people deemed the best and played them myself. They were specifcally games that I had interest in playing. It would also take way too much time to dedicate 50 hours to each game. I am kinda casual since adulting takes too much time.
I agree that you shouldn't judge a game off just a few hours of play. But in my opinion, I feel it's fair to dislike a game after a few hours but hard to recommend a game after a few hours of play.

    1- Isaac
    2- Hades
    3- Risk of Rain 2
    4- Slay the Spire
    5- Gunfire Reborn
    6- Gungeon
    7- Dead Cells
Isaac has so much depth to it between Lore, Items, Enemies, and Characters it's kind of insane being placed last. The one thing you really pointed out was that you can only shoot in 4 directions, but that alone made you ignore almost every other aspect about it. Obviously some random comments can't convince you to love it, but it's community is way more than people who play it for nostalgia, it's genuinely one of the best games ever made imho. (Not to mention the INSANE modding community it has, far more than any other game I've seen, besides skyrim)
In another note though, you should absolutely check out a game called Astral Ascent, it's still early access but official release will be early 2024 adding the final touches to the story and bosses. Everything about that game is wonderful in my eyes, and it has the exact progression you seem to love.

I didn't like Isaac because you either feel like a slug or a god. At least at my brief playtime of a 15-20 hours, with the item desc mod, the start of all the runs was super slow, especially due to the 4d shooting, and if I reached endgame it had no challenge. I beat the game twice, and after the second victory, deleted it. Is it just the variety that you like? Genuinely curious not hating

    • @Aerix_Bay
      @Aerix_Bay ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@TheFuckingKrayz The variety for sure helps, but I mostly love how challenging it is and how you can win any run despite a bad start. It's definitely a slow burner, I won't deny that, you can't quite grasp the full scope of the game with just a couple "wins" because past those first wins, there's even more bosses to unlock, opening more and more floors and items to experience. Start speeds, while somewhat dependent on items, are also heavily influenced by which character you're using.
I think more than anything, I enjoy that the game never seems to end. 17 characters (Plus alternates, making it 34) all having 14 individual unlocks each (alts having 7), makes it really unending, not even taking into account the secrets and whatnot. I've put in hundreds upon hundreds of hours and I've yet to complete everything, so I know that any time I pick it up, there's always something to accomplish.

    • @TheFuckingKrayz

Also I really enjoyed the video because all of the thing you talked about was right, isaac is my most played rogue-like but its better with mods, Risk of rain 2 is my second most played one and its also better with mods. I think what makes them "The top rogue-likes" because of their replayability and their mod support. For me gunfire reborn was also the game that I most enjoyed among them, hades was the visuals and everything is just mixed up great and felt good playing. Slay the spire was the one who I couldn't play that much because of the gameplay wasn't meant for me, Dead Cells wanted me to keep playing and playing again to upgrade my stuff and its considered "Rogue-lite" because the gameplay is most focused on its upgrading system. Also ive Tried the Enter The Gungeon but it didn't really catch me somehow even though i've tried it again and again and in 10 hours of playing it, still didn't really catch me.
I can't rank any of them in specific order because they are all the same "Rogue-like/lite" Genre but they are also all different from each other which made me play and love them all, they are all similar and different from each other thats why everyone should give each of them a try before giving their thoughts of it, I really enjoyed playing each one of them.
Nowadays im just really looking forward to games with modding supports because for me, thats what makes the game better, the community itself adding some of their creativity and love on it makes it a little bit better and also makes the game more replayable and enjoyable for me.

@@phryd both Isaac and Risk of Rain have a certain “a-ha” moment where you really need to feel the game at a certain level before it clicks and you really love it.
For Isaac, it seems the crazy fun part is the amount of RNG is so high that you can have truly awesomely unique runs many hundreds of hours into the game. For me, like you, the base-layer combat and mechanics are so simple and boring that I never get that excited about the mechanics that get built up on top of it.
For Risk of Rain 2, a lot of the magic comes from breaking the game and feeling like an absolute god. And then learning how to tweak the game to your liking using artifacts and trying to push for winning in harder difficulties with each character. While I have created godly characters in certain runs in RoR2, the baseline mechanics for fighting felt very repetitive and I personally dislike the time mechanic a lot. I much prefer the gunplay in Gunfire and I like the fact that gunfire is about clearing a room and crafting a build whereas RoR2 is more about racing the clock.
One interesting thing about the list in general is that the games that allow for more control and agency over the in-run progression is what we (you and me) seem to like more. The games that offer less influence over progression and are more random are the ones we gravitate less to. Both Isaac and RoR2 are masterpieces of their own right, but the baseline combat in both games are flat for me compared to some of the rest of the list AND the progression has less agency. Both games also take many hours invested before you really start to appreciate the game on a deeper level but the combat/progression never really let me personally get to that level of appreciation for either game.

I hate to say it but a large portion of this list is affected by a lack of skill in some games, while more in others. For example, you never showed yourself fighting ror2 Mithrix. Not to mention you didnt talk about artifacts at all. Even worse, you didnt talk about the true ending of the game, becoming so powerful, God has to shut off your game in fear of you going to kill him.
(This was just a rant defending ror2)

Isaac use the EID mod with Repentance DLC you get the Alt floors and the Alt paths you have 713+ items and 100 trinkets and Alt bosses. The Dead god achievement is one of the hardest achievements to get because it is impossible to speedrun it by the way the game is intentionally made. It can take you years to get it just cause RNG and shit. The end game bosses such as Delirium, Hush and Mother are ridiculous in the DLC. Not to mention the tainted characters recontextualizing the understanding of each character. This game easily expands each run with every item. The game has stats and DMG multipliers too you can show them in the extended hud settings. There's so much that can't be explained in a simple comment.

I think the appeal for isaac for most players (other than the mods and dlc) is the randomness. The game will never be the same no matter how you play it due to the items. Also the massive amount of content and replayability. I'm over 400 hours in and have 57% of achievements.

As someone with 450 hours in isaac i would also put it at the bottom, that game is the definition of stockholm syndrome.
Also, if you ever wanna play more roguelikes, either for a video or on your own, here a couple that id recommend (in order of how much i recommend them):
-Revita, a platformer twin stick shooter where health is also your currency, also has an upcoming update that will make lots of improvements and add lots of new content to it.
-Dicey Dungeons, an insanely strategic "card game" roguelike where you have abilities that you put dice (which have random values) into to deal damage to enemies. Doesn't have much variety inside of a run but makes up for it by the amount of characters and character variants (which are all basically COMPLETELY unique).
-Going Under, an action roguelike where you have to constantly pick up new weapons in a room because your current one broke, also has a really good story and characters.
-Brotato. Have you seen Vampire Survivors? Well Brotato is that game but with much more variety and much more strategy, it also has modding support to get even more content.
-Blazing Beaks, a twin stick shooter that's all about risk and reward, enemies drop items that make you weaker and then you can remove those items in a shop to get ones that make you stronger. Has kind of a variety problem but is fun enough for it to not be that bad.
-Crypt of the Necrodancer, one of the classic roguelikes, a rhythm game tile based roguelike with an absolutely insane soundtrack.
-Downwell, a platformer roguelike (though it doesn't really have the feeling of one) where you fall down a well with boots that can shoot, using them to either kill enemies or slow your fall. The game is all about getting the highest combo you can without touching the ground. The only problem is that it doesn't have much variety and unlocks.
-Mana Spark, an action roguelike that has a more strategic/soulslike feel to its combat. Does kinda struggle with variety too, with the main change in runs being the character you pick (which are all very different).
-Destropolis, an arcade twin stick roguelike where you just shoot at enemies, try to survive and aim for highscores (pun intended). Your score also gives you progress for unlocks, which there aren't a lot of but they take quite a lot to unlock. Has kinda eh variety too but I think it affects it less than the others.

The main problem with Hades is that each run feels the exact same. it’s always the same 4 maps with the same 4 bosses, and there are only 6 classes to pick from. on top of that, when playing Hades i’ve never once had to contemplate a decision whether it was which door i go in or which boon to pick, whereas in Slay the Spire, picking a route and deciding what to buy at the shop and picking which card if any to grab constantly has me thinking. Basically Hades is a game that gets insanely hard carried by its story and aesthetic and slow skill curve, but the roguelike genre is one where the main focus should be gameplay.

Isaac is a masterpiece of a game and while its like the father of all roguelikes still is THE BEST rogulike l, isaac has a huge content dlc plus an actuve modding community. I recommend really giveing it a second chance with item description mod. Isaac has alot of thinking there for alot of "break" potential and combos u can abuse and is fun to play with. These breaks are the reason for ppl to have this many hrs. Anyways just my opinion as i said no hate u didnt give isaac a chance and didnt play what was supposed to be played.

honestly this list just feels like you made it in a couple weeks trying to squeeze content rather than really trying the games out... placing isaac in the bottom really just shows how you made like 10 runs and called it a day instead of taking your time to... you know... play the games.... roguelikes are complex, demanding, time consuming but the key thing about them is just hopping on them from time to time to try and master their mechanics, not something like a singleplayer game with a 10-20 hour campaign. These are games you usually need to dive into to fully understand their appeal and try to master, dealing with unexpected shit and trying to play your cards to get a clear advantage and if you know what you're doing you will start to get runs that takes hours of just pure fun and chaos.
yeah I get it, you probably dont have the time or motivation to really play these games but if that's the case what's your point? the game you can get the most satisfaction with just a couple hours playing it? because these are games you need a couple hundred hours to really try and talk about them. they are meant to be extremely replayable and you really should consider this the next time you evaluate them

You are right, I don't really have time to put 50 to 100 hours into every game just for a single youtube video. This video itself already took me nearly 2 months to make as it is. As a normal gamer you'll usually be able to dedicate a lot of hours to a single game to enjoy. But when making content, most of the times people will only put 5-10-ish hours into a game, especially those who make videos about a variety of games rather than just 1.
