Dresden book 1 and 2 are above average but it really does kick to the next level at book 3. Treat book 1 and 2 like “monster of the week” books and you will love them.
I liked them both, I really didn't have high expectations, so I was pleasantly surprised by Butcher's fantastic prose. The stories are well built, nothing mind-blowing, maybe 1 > 2
@@eduardocantos2141 exactly. I think when people say "it takes til book three to get going" what they mean is "it takes til book 3 to become an expansive series with world-building. 1 and 2 serve almost like fully self-contained "monster of the week" books.
I highly suggest the Locked Tomb books. it can be rather hard to follow at times, but the satisfaction that the endings of the first two books provided was amazing. The third was not quite my cup of tea, but I think thats likely due to the fact that it was a single novel, that grew too much and so was split into two books, so it didnt have the same impactful finale that the first two did primarily because it wasnt a full story arc.
Dresden Files begins as quite a good light-ish episodic fantasy series. Over the series it becomes a huge, sprawling epic fantasy series with cataclysmic stakes. You really don't see any of that latter bit until you get further into the series, but I liked the books from Storm Front and it's one of my favorite ongoing series. Would you like it? I certainly don't know; all I can give you is my experience. Some series I'm eagerly awaiting the finish of: Vlad Taltos, Steven Brust - heist fantasy about a human "mafia' underboss in an elvish empire. Safehold, David Weber - political/military SF with strong religious themes War God, David Weber - epic fantasy with an orc-like protagonist Vatta's Peace, Elizabeth Moon - space opera with a strong female protagonist Arcane Ascension, Andrew Row - prog fantasy in a school environment Warformed: Stormweaver, Bryce O'Connor - prog SF in a school environment. Reminiscent of Super Powereds by Drew Hayes, which is one of my favorite series. I could go on, but I'll stop there.
The Navigator's Children is officially released tomorrow. Getting my copy on Wednesday. Can't wait! 😊 Also The Splintered Sun coming up, from what I hear it will be between Tailchaser's Song and War of the Flowers in length (in other words around 500 pages) and set before MS&T. I believe he has one more similar book contracted to be set in Osten Ard. We are being spoiled! 🤘
I dropped the ball on pre-ordering _The Navigator's Children_ so I'm going to a bookstore or 3 tomorrow in hopes of getting a copy. I'm looking forward to the other two Osten Ard books as well. Spoiled indeed!
I've done full grief cycle on KKC. The disbelief it hasn't come out, anger at Patrick, sadness at the lack of answers and hopelessness that we may never get doors of stone. All that said, as time has filled the sharp edges of that grief, I've settled at a place of patient waiting for book 3 and don't mind if I have to wait another 10-20 years for it. Even unfinished, it's a series I've read well over 10 times and continues to be my favorite fantasy series. Besides, gives me time to read so much other great fantasy and Sanderson alone keeps me occupied 😊
Hey Johan, giving my 2 pence, given you weren't as hyped on the Red Rising trilogy as other people I'd personally recommend trying Sun Eater. I've nearly finished Howling Dark and it may be my book of the year. Absolutely fantastic writing. Regarding Dresden, I think I may be one of the few who actually enjoyed books 1 & 2. They do a decent enough job of introducing Harry and the world and are the foundations of what is to come. Plus, they are easy reads in between the chonkers!
The Dresden Files is good from the first book but the series really takes off on the third. It is where the author feels that he started getting the voices, world, and conflicts down. The first two books are great introductions to the world, characters, and setting.
The Wise Man's Fear was INTERMINABLE. I couldn't even finish it. I think in hindsight Name of the Wind was also massively derivative and overrated, even though I, like many, devoured it at the time. I don't think it stands up to scrutiny though, and at this point, frankly, even if Book 3 came out I wouldn't bother with traipsing through Book 2 to get to it, given I'd have no faith it'd be worth it, haha.
I'm so looking forward to hearing some commentary on the Locked Tomb series... it is quite weird and definitely divisive, although it's one I have enjoyed a lot (and didn't find as confusing as some suggest).
LOVED Red Rising (all of the books) and went straight to read Sun Eater and honestly wasnt that fussed. Gave it 3 stars due to me only enjoying the last 50%.

Patrick Rothfuss deserves all the criticism he’s receiving. I’ll keep saying it every time his name comes up. He has some of the most devout fans in the fantasy and reading communities, and his charity had been doing well for years. Why he decided to make that promise is beyond me... it was uncalled for, erratic, and irresponsible. It’s something fans shouldn’t have to tolerate. And the Kickstarters, some are failing for some due to others, who don’t actually need them, taking the massive majority of the lion’s share of attention and funding. That, too, is an issue for creators that I think needs addressing. Because they're going outta hand at this point. But GRRM is my pick. Even if he didn't finish it, the quality of everything in the ASOIAF books is akin to a literary masterpiece. The story itself is so compelling and layered that it sets a high bar for epic fantasy, even when standing alongside complete and beloved fantasy series like LOTR.
I think Rothfuss fans overreact. Yeah he lied and fucked up. Really fucked up. But people fuck up. I won't be spending my time hating on him for the rest of my life. His books are great. And I hope he finishes the series. If not - oh well.
I don't even understand the fans. The books aren't even that great just move on. Wise Man's fear is a 1000 page filler with fairy porn. Kvothe is extremely sexist and danna is manipulative B. No king gets killed in king killer chronicles. Nothing of significance happens in book two to make you excited for book 3 lol.
I loved the first three ASOIAF but would never equate them to a masterpiece. I see the first three books as being complex and engaging. The last two are complex and uninteresting.
The first book came out in 2010 and the last book of arc 1 is coming out this year, 14 years later. If he takes a 6 year break and writes the last 5 in the same amount of time then the series will conclude in 20 years. I just realised that I will almost be 40 then, feels crazy to think about.
@@davidlyons5118 I don't know what the life expectancy is where you live but I have faith in your ability to make it to 84 :) (based on absolutely nothing at all of course)
As someone who only read the KKC last year (without knowing any of the drama beforehand) I thought it was incredible. I understand the outrage of fans about everything surrounding Rothfuss, but there’s a lot of revisionist opinions out there now trashing the books just bc he hasn’t delivered the next one. Fans are entitled to their opinions about Rothfuss himself, but what is indisputable imo is that the books he has written are incredible. He has some of the best writing and storytelling in all of fantasy under his name.
It only has one book out, but if the rest of the series is as good as book 1, then "The Hunter of Fareldin" will be an absolute unmissable gem. Book 1 is called "The Hunter" and the author is Kylee Aagard. I can't recommend this one high enough!
Love Dungeon Crawler Carl! The most addictive series I've read by quite a bit. It's funny and somewhat absurd but a strong fantasy story in its own right. I feel like people that read fantasy, play D&D and/or play RPG video games will enjoy the humor and satire.
The 3rd tad book, green angel, was excellent. You’ll love it. But who am I? I own the 1st edition hardcover, as I do all three, so it’s been decades since I read it.
It's science fiction rather than fantasy, but David Gerrold's "War Against The Chtorr" gets better with each book and I'd love to see where he wants to go with it. The last book was released over 30 years ago but hope springs eternal.
Definitely interesting in starting or finishing most of these series, exception is Locked Tomb. Tried listening to it since it was included with Audible but I didn't care for it at all and stopped like an hour in and I rarely do that.
11:40 when it comes to Dresden specifically I really have a soft spot for the 1st book Storm Front but if you really aren’t sure then you can find some good summarizations online and then start at book 3 Grave Peril. Jim Butcher himself has even said this before lol that’s where you heard it he cracked that joke on his own books before anyone else started doing it lol. My recommendation is READ DRESDEN!!! lol there is a reason why it is considered the cream of the crop of the Urban Fantasy genre. Yes, yes, there are people who say Green Bone Saga AND THEY’RE WRONG! Lol
For me, Sun Eater was a none starter. It is too lofty for me and I just felt zero relationship with the protagonist from the offset. Red Rising however is absolutely incredible. If you ask me, it peaks at Iron Gold. Multiple POVs spanning every level of society, meshed together mindbogglingly well. It's masterful on so many levels
There’s no way that George could finish a song of ice and fire with 2 more books. There’s no way. There’s just so much going, too many character arcs along with the others from the north.
Let me know when a good story is completed. Then I will decide if I would like to read it. I’ve learned my lesson starting stories that aren’t already finished.
I think George Martin has finished A Song of Ice & Fire but following the backlash from the way the series ended and all the fan theories out there I don't think they'll be released until his death so all the fallout can be avoided as he's not gonna please everyone and people are going to have some very strong opinions
Sun eater and red rising my two favorites oat. Sun eater will edge rr out unless pierce pulls a miracle out of his ass which he could do. However I slightly trust ruocchio as an author more and think he will stick the landing for the series.
Good example how bad is the English speakers scope: the Red Rising is very much translated to many languages and popular already, it’s. The Sun Eater (no matter how much I love it and just got the broken bindings edition) is not translated and never heard of in most of the world. So there is that. Hype here hype there, the end of the day is: it’s a very small number.
Of the ones that will actually be finished, I think it's going to be SA. Mainly because by the time that second arc gets completed, there's most likely not going to be anything else like the Cosmere as a whole in fantasy. Unless you count Michael Moorcock's Eternal Champion.
Palette cleanser.. skip Dresden Files and go right to Iron Druid by Kevin Hearnes (audiobook). And I agree with you about Dungeon Crawler Carl. It's not good. I am a litrpg fan too.
Stephen R Donaldson. I never see him on any lists ever 😶 Maybe he sucks and I just don’t know it but I love his Gap Series and the first 6 books in Thomas Covenant
The original Red Rising trilogy is way more enjoyable then book 4 and 5. I personally didn’t like “new” approach of iron gold, and dark age had too many uncomfortable moments. Hope light bringer can change that
Gentlemen bastards FOREVER, best series IMO. The Renaissance vibes are just killerz and man am i a sucker for crime/ fantasy fusion, without it being a pg 13 marvel esque production like mistborn (read them all and severely bland imo) The thorn of ember lain is written, so i am utterly content eith the first 3 books for however long it takes lynch to see it published, i believe hes had a hell of a time in his personal life if im correct. Understandable vs utter laziness on GRRM's part. The got books were great, but theur immense lengths combined with the shit association that is forever fused to their legacy from the show, and now with the abysmal second season of hotd? Asoiaf is by far the series that has plummeted the most for me. Nowadays, i get my appreciation for GOT from lore videos such as the ones on civilization x's channel, THAT is compelling shit
I absolutely hate king killer chronicles. No one should read that it, like seriously. It's so problematic and boring. Nothing actually happens and no king gets murdered. Name of the wind is readable even tho whatever bad happens in our main character's life is his own doing as he is too arrogant and petty to let go and move on. The ending is weird , unnecessary and doesn't serve any purpose. Wise of man's fear is a 1000 page filler with fairy porn.
Sometimes I wonder if Lord of the Rings would be regarded so highly if it was never finished like A Song of Ice and Fire. Like if "The Return of the King" was never released
Probably not, but it's an interesting thought. The ending is extremely important to the themes of the story, it would be pointless without it. Really goes to show how important endings are to making stories culturally relevant
Re list Tad Williams - i read the trilogy decades ago have first ed hardbacks have reread a few times, never read any of the rest. Dresden - i love, honestly i am into double digit rereads. The first books suffer, not because there are bad. Its because that was decades ago and he is a better author now. Sanderson - i will not buy/read any Stormlight books after "wind and truth" as i will more than likely die before he finishes. That is 15-30 years away at best and given the bloodletting that is to come inserting a decade plus break in the timeline I may loose interest. Heck he might die before that like RJ did. If i do read em it will be with my nieces and nephews. Pluss he will have a ton of other stuff to read. GRRM - i hated book 1 was plenty. the rest i have heard only the first red rising set is worth the time maybe. anything else i am waiting until done to pick up if at all.
I judge an author based on his writing and the stores they bring. Yes, I would love the story to be finished, but authors are humans. All 3 of these authors write incredibly well, and I will continue to give high praise to their success and writing skills. As far as drama, I could give a rats ass what keyboard warriors deem who is righteous and who isn't.
I may be in a small group of people, but I read the Name of the Wind because so many people swear that it's like the second coming of Christ, but I hated it.
Excuse me for pointing this out, Viking guy. You said earlier in the video you didn't like a book because of its humor. Why would you even say at the end you would consider Dungeon Crawler Carl, which is most likely to be even funnier?
The Locked Tomb Series is very different than the Dark Tower. Granted King was stoned off his behind for the first book, but seriously, Locked Tomb each book is written very differently. I loved the Dark Tower until the very end. So I reread it and I am still disappointed.
Dresden files is incredible. They are such a quick read, book 1 and 2 are clearly just the author learning his craft. There’s nothing wrong with the books, the writing just gets better as time goes on. I’m reading one in between Stormlight books and the fun, fast paced action really makes up for the longer slower sections of big books.
I have to remind you and all: Stormlight Archive is not that popular as it seems on booktube. While Wheel of Time was a real sensation look at the numbers: the entire Cosmere didn’t sell half of WoT. Cosmere. That means multiple series. Why? Because his books are very far from being that popular in other languages for some reason. If he can’t get a successful adaptation of one or two books, he won’t be on the level of Robert Jordan. Should I remind everyone that RJ didn’t have social media in his back and still did this before that awful TV show and even Brandon’s finish? I met him and I leave in a small European country, that’s the thing, Robert Jordan spent a lot of time to promote his books outside USA/UK. No matter the Dragonsteel Nexus, or how much I like his books, I can read in English. His books are in latency here and not promoted at all.
Personally, I don't care for Sandersons writing. The dialogue is repetitive and boring. The world building forces you to continue reading other books. The time jumps are jarring. Magic is good, but rather pointless and the pacing is an absolute slog! Feels like unedited, juvinile writing. Just my opinion.
Dresden book 1 and 2 are above average but it really does kick to the next level at book 3.
Treat book 1 and 2 like “monster of the week” books and you will love them.

Moby Dick's a book.
Excuse me for pointing this out, Viking guy. You said earlier in the video you didn't like a book because of its humor. Why would you even say at the end you would consider Dungeon Crawler Carl, which is most likely to be even funnier?
There's sometimes called FOMO 😂 yes, it is irrational haha
The Locked Tomb Series is very different than the Dark Tower. Granted King was stoned off his behind for the first book, but seriously, Locked Tomb each book is written very differently. I loved the Dark Tower until the very end. So I reread it and I am still disappointed.
Dresden files is incredible. They are such a quick read, book 1 and 2 are clearly just the author learning his craft. There’s nothing wrong with the books, the writing just gets better as time goes on. I’m reading one in between Stormlight books and the fun, fast paced action really makes up for the longer slower sections of big books.
Memory Sorrow and Thorn has been completed for decades. The new books are a different series.
They are the second arc of the series, playing 30 years or so after the first arc. Not something completely different
DELUXE not DELXUE
👍👍👍
I hope this video ends on a high note😂
Personally, I don't care for Sandersons writing.
The dialogue is repetitive and boring. The world building forces you to continue reading other books. The time jumps are jarring. Magic is good, but rather pointless and the pacing is an absolute slog!
Feels like unedited, juvinile writing.
Just my opinion.
James islington is a lazy writer
Why do you say that lol
