I owned a 1972 sedan with gasoline engine and a 1975 station wagon with the diesel engine, both USA models. I loved them but in the US they really screwed up. Rust was an enormous problem and this was what eventually retired both of mine. The station wagon started rusting after 2 years and it was still under warranty but they kept making excuses as to why their warranty agent couldn't look at it - I.E. he's busy, we hired a new one, he had a heart attack, etc etc. until the warranty was expired. I made repairs to the body but by 1982 it was beyond economical repair. The drive train was robust but there were a lot of issues with peripheral items - on the diesel the shifter broke off while driving, this turned out to be a common issue due to a weak factory weld so the replacements had the same fault. I had a local welder fix it with a different style of weld.
On the diesel cars they figured Americans couldn't handle the idea of turning the fuel on and off with a knob in the dash so they put a complex servo mechanism to pull and push the lever on the injection pump. Think modified power window mechanism (I don't know if that is what it was but it was similar). The cover to this came off and the mechanism jammed in the RUN position. I made another cover for it and that lasted for over 100,000 miles until I sold the vehicle. Similar setup on the glow plugs, an electronic circuit with temperature sensors to automatically turn on the glow plugs whenever the ignition key was turned on. This was early for this type of device and the relay built in was inadequate for the load and failed. I used an industrial relay and repaired that.
The only engine issue I had was a heater hose developed a pinhole leak while driving and let enough coolant out to overheat the engine in winter time. As soon as I saw the temperature climbing I stopped the car but it melted one of the rubber rings used at the base of a cylinder sleeve enough to let coolant get into the oil pan. Having just become parents cash was limited so I got the needed parts and tore the engine down in my back yard and replaced the seal, this also required a new head gasket etc. It wasn't an onerous job except that it was winter and 14 degrees F. This repair lasted over 100,000 miles and the engine was still fine when I sold the car.
We took many long trips in that car, it was very comfortable and except for items listed above it was very dependable. Had they been better about their support I might have considered another Peugeot, I had owned 403s and 404s, but too little too late. There was an effort to get a class action lawsuit concerning the rust issues, it was stated that a change in the way they processed recycled steel was responsible for the rusting. By the time this was going on it was too late for me.
I also watched with some dismay as they cheapened the later 504 sedans, losing the independent rear suspension and the rear disk brakes. The models they sold afterwards in the US were flimsy compared to the 504 and they simply couldn't compete here anymore. Now they have grown to huge size as Stellantis but I doubt they will try to re-enter the US market.

Does the Peugeot 504 have a limousine version? or long version?

    • @quarterlight

Not as far as I know - the 604 of course was the flagship model and I have seen Limousine versions before of those.
The company Heuliez produced 124 long wheelbase limousine versions of the 604. The limousines were produced from 1978 to 1984.
