  • A car that was fast enough such that bank robbers preferred it, it was super reliable, it had a high status, this car is the Peugeot 504, the Lion of Africa, Africa's Workhorse. The most common engine option available in the Kenyan market is the 1800cc petrol coupled to the 5 speed manual, a very tough and reliable power train. Would this car still make a good and sensible choice today? Lets find out in this video.

Love the 504...the GL and station wagon were our family cars in the 1970's. Super suspension. Greetings from South Africa

Indeed, they were excellent cars, reliability, suspension, performance, they were cars that were built without planned obsolescence in mind, thanks a lot 🙏

GL, Ti models were 2000cc carb and injection with super all wheel disc brakes and independent suspension. The L, GR, Sr were 1800cc with solid rear axle from 404 and rear drum brakes.

Yes the performance oriented variants were specced with disc brakes all around and were faster and engaging than the ones with basic engine options that had drums at the back

King of the African Roads... Try driving the 504 GL. It has the 2.0L engine (1971cc), all round disc brakes, drive shafts on the rear wheels plus independent suspension. That's why it's very comfortable and tireless on long journeys.

Yes indeed its better and something different from the normal 1600cc and 1800cc. Its a gem.

I have a Peugeot 505 and a 404, and I am from the USA- so they were really cheap. Most Americans know little about them and hate them because they are from France. Hahaha, I got my 505 for $1,200 and drove it every day for years! It’s super comfortable and even has air conditioning! The 404 needs restoration, but it does run. They are very under-appreciated in the United States, which is great, it’s not a target for theft. Vive la Peugeot!

Very glad to know that, they hate cars from France but they don't know what they're missing out on. Very comfortable cars which perform well and are very affordable to maintain.

You could mention the brilliant success in the Safari, Bandama and Moroccan Rallys.

The Toyota Probox is struggling to achieve the status of Peugeot 504 in Africa

A 1NZ FE swap would do good for performance and fuel economy

Absolutely, I've seen people install even automatic transmissions especially for those who are not good with manual gearboxes

I bought the 504 break, did the restoration, it's very nice then recently I just bought a 504 sedan both diesel both for Speed. Both USA models and cars here in the United States. Once you restore one it's your obligation to restore another. Because you understand the car.

Glad to know that, and I agree, once you restore one it almost becomes a culture, it feels incredible bringing these special cars back to life. Keep it up
