I (28M) have an older brother (30M) and we were pretty close growing up. Then, five years back, he got married to my SIL (29F) and we sort of grew apart. As a matter of fact, it wasn't just me but he started distancing himself from our family as a whole after he got married. He'd spend his birthdays with his in-laws and would celebrate with us only a day after and of course, all the holidays and stuff would be spent with his in-laws without a question. My parents and I found it a little sad that he wouldn't visit us anymore but then there wasn't much we could say or do so we just accepted it. His in-laws didn't really like us so we couldn't exactly just join in either.

The stupidest thing is to let that terrible brother work for OP. The father never should’ve said anything like that because it puts so much responsibility on OP. That shouldn’t be his in the first place.

Or worse, if he used this to build rapport with clients and then steal them from under OP, and then goes scorched earth on OP.

OMG, people keep saying that! Have you never worked in a moderate to large business? The janitorial staff has the keys and access to everything, and they work after hours, without the owners and execs breathing down their necks. Do NOT underestimate someone because their job description does not require a college degree. Unless you do deep vetting you do not know who you are hiring as cleaners (who are usually contracted by an outside service nowadays anyway).

Even if the brother had been accepted into his choice college, it's not inappropriate for parents to say "We have this much money, enough to send both of you to more reasonably priced schools". Oldest kid doesn't get to have all the money at the expense of the younger one, just because he is older. He'd basically, be doing what he was accusing OP of doing. No reason for OP to feel guilty.

I have an uncle like this. He was so affectionate to our family until he got married. Suddenly he changed, from the way he thinks to the way he behaves. He just become like his wife, unsociable and acts like they are above everyone else. Whenever there is family gathering, that pair always bring unnecessary topics only to highlight their family. Everyone else just like, is that so? Then go away from them who keep managing to ruin the vibe. We just wanna spend time together, not gather for competition who is better. Their achievement actually, just moderate which everyone else also achieve. So I still don't get the idea of my uncle saying we are jealous of his family 😂
Its just sad a kind uncle has gone and become a bitter person instead.

Correction Op, your brother's wife didn't turn him against his family. She was just going off what he told her about them. HE was the one trying to get his father to commit fraud by suggesting he bribe the college officials to let him in to the school.
And the father has made a BIG mistake allowing the brother anywhere near their businesses in any role whatsoever, even a peripheral role like housekeeping or maintenance, and especially not security.

Isn’t it pathetic that the older brother that is supposed to be a role model for the younger, can’t man up and ask his family for assistance. He knows he’s been wrong for not visiting or checking on his parents, and only wanted help to benefit him. Plus if you have financial problems before having a child, maybe they are ready for a child or need to learn to budget.

  • @lucariomew365

Stories like this really emphasize the issue that I tend to have with people, and that's the inability or refusal to communicate with others about familial or financial situations, and the (selective) avoidance of confrontation to the extreme. For instance, the second the brother brought up that horrid plan about lying to the parents, OP should've not only cut him off then and there, he should've immediately had a discussion with his parents after he told the fiancé. Not only would this have cleared some of the air, he could've also warned them in case he tried other methods to hustle the parents out of money. Granted, he told them in a week, but only after learning his brother lied to his face and tried to guilt-trip him about the college story. Seriously, someone who does this doesn't have "shame"; it's so naive, how are people still this naive. I haven't been that naive since I was like 10.

Anyone consider that OP is coming from the standpoint of the golden child? His brothers wife may just be looking out and standing up for her husband. I would be very interested in hearing the other side of the story. The fact that the brother proposed that OP ask his father for help as opposed to asking directly and the fact that he rejected the family for a couple years before this point is a tell of favoritism. Those who are not in the golden child, may resort to extremes just to get what they need, because they’ve never been given what they need. OP may not recognize that he is the golden child. How we ended this story was a bit condescending to his brother. It may reflect how his family always perceived him.
