Love how people run this movie through today's filter and say "yuck", but back then, this would have been epic. The bar was so low years ago that anybody with a hint of talent could be popular. I attended a high school talent show (late 70's) where a kid came on and played a very shaky version of Fur Elise with a guitar & amp. Afterwards he was treated like a rock star with other kids asking him a million of questions about the guitar, how to play, or how to even get a guitar. Back then, parents were into their own thing and were not that interested in fostering things that interested their kids. You were on your own and motivated kids rose to the top. Today, talented kids are amazing but they're everywhere. Ok, enough rambling. Old man stepping off the soap box.

Then most of those videos got taken off youtube and I was devastated! I looked it up last again after years and was so excited to find it all in one piece! I miss middle school. Lots of people I know hated their middle school years but mine were really fun! I had no responsibilities and lots of freedom and I was old enough to appreciate it (because things got really difficult in high school just like I knew they would)
Exactly. I was in JHS when this was made. If I could go back in time this would be it. And That's with having had a lot of fun in College. But also sweated out a lot of hard work.
One thing that I remember most about my early middle school years were all the girls wearing hot pants and short skirts and "slippahs" My first two years of middle school (Intermediate) were in Hawaii. I was in perpetual protuberance almost every school day for almost two whole years! I had to wear two pairs of jockey shorts and my swim trunks underneath my pants to keep the bulging from showing. Bwaahaahaa!!! Yep good old days!!!
I loved this! I saw it in Jr high & taped in on 8 track so I could listen to it after seeing it in Showtime. We didn't get a VCR till 1983 when Laura returned to General Hospital 😊so happy to see it in it's entirety again after over 49 years. I love that Charlie Brill & Mitzi McCall are in this too.

Great time capsule, thanks for sharing this...when I saw it on Showtime as a kid circa 80/81 I remember really appreciating the "DIY" aesthetic, still do, only from the perspective of adulthood and industry insider status it seems even more impressive somehow...I also can't believe how much I remembered verbatim and how much it invaded my own projects (subconsciously or otherwise). Of course it's funny now (for all the right and wrong reasons) but it was funny then too--the "High School Musical" series didn't aim a lot higher and would have benefitted from some of the sincerity here. This was amazing! If junior high were a string of mini flash mobs mixed with old stereotypes, this captured it all. Would love to see a modern remake haha. That passing the note scene was the best. Also, I rather enjoyed the authentic pre-auto tune singing in contrast to how today we over idolize perfection. Thanks for posting this classic.
You know, nothing for nothing, but this film is really well made. The lighting, cinematography, all well done and just the fact you made this with amateur acting talent is a feat in itself. It reminds me of Alan Parker's Bugsy Malone.

Many years ago a friend of mine passed along an old VHS copy of the film after it had been retired from a library collection. Last week, my wife and I tried to watch it and even in its deteriorated condition, it was fun. But it did lead ne to search, once again, for an on-line source and this time I found one. Thanks, David! Anyone who has ever worked in independent film realizes how difficult things like this are to produce and what a gem this is!

Note passing and gossip were part and parcel of the early adolescent scene, when hormones rage and kids struggle to find an identity and where they fit in.

I remember first knowing about this from one of the early seasons of American idol when they surprised Paul showing clips of it during the live show! And this was back in 2008 and the musical numbers been stuck in my mind ever since! I even uploaded a few songs to limewire 😂😂. I didn't think I would have as much empathy for Jerry as I had! Such a fun and quick watch!! But that blonde nerd was working my damn nerves!!!

According to Roger Ebert's review of Midnight Madness, Ron Miller, who was running Disney at the time, saw this short film, and apperently, that's how Midnight Madness was developed.
@@davidwechter416 I saw the film for the first time, and I honestly agree with Ebert. This was back when Disney was in a slump at the time, and it seemed like the only way that Disney should get back to it's "innovative" roots was to basically capitalize on what popular. For example, The Black Hole was made to capitalize on Star Wars, Midnight Madness did the same with Animal House, and Condorman was a cross between James Bond and Superman. Thankfully, Michael Eisner revitalized Disney in 1984, so there was a silver lining.
There's a great gem from the 70's that's a highschool movie, lots of big names that weren't big yet, it's called 'My Bodyguard' it's actually 1980 but it's very 70's! Movies back then seemed like they actually used kids the correct age!

If you haven’t seen the movie The Nice Guys starring Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling, run don’t walk to your remote and watch it on Netflix or Wherever. It takes you right back to 1978. You see middle school perspective of that era from Goslings 13 year old daughter.
Okay... So there was a very short period of time when I had purchasing power at a library and I bought this film. That's why I ended up with a VHS copy long after 16mm ceased to be a medium. Despite all the challenges, though, I've watched this every few years in one way or another. And there have always been ear worms. The songs are so great, with so many layers, that I'd love to know more about how they were created. If there's anything you can share about process, please do.
OK, since you are interested... The film was originally going to be a senior project at USC film school, where two of us producers were students. We started with the general idea of doing a musical about "a day in the life of junior high school." (This was in late 1976, two years before the film "Grease" came out.) At age 21, we producers were only 7 years out of junior high school ourselves, so the experience was fresh in our minds, and we felt that JHS was a fertile world in which to set a film. The musical numbers were a mix of songs that helped further the simple storyline and songs that conceived to bring aspects of junior high school to life in a fun way. I don't know if it was intentional or not that so many different musical styles were used (Broadway, 1960s rock, country/western, a jazz waltz, Dixieland/Charleston, a love ballad shuffle, and even a Jewish march), but that added to the fun. As a young songwriter and fan of Broadway musicals, I knew I wanted to write a couple of songs in which multiple melodies were song at the same time. A couple of the tunes were "trunk songs." The "Opening/Closing JHS Theme" and "The Itty Bitty Titty Committee" were based on melodies I had written a few years earlier, well before the film was conceived, and I decided to repurpose/incorporate them into the film -- maybe partly out of convenience (two less melodies to write) and partly because I thought they were good tunes that deserved an outlet. As the script went through various revisions, a couple of songs were dropped and a few were added from the original plan. One of the songs that got dropped was a tongue-in-cheek "scary" song that speculated wildly on "What Goes On in the Teacher's Lounge?" At some point, the idea of writing a song for the female villain Vicki came and went. The idea for "The Itty Bitty Titty Committee" came about when someone happened to tell me of that phrase that some less-endowed girls use in describing themselves -- it seemed like such a fun phrase, and such a relevant topic in a setting featuring kids going through that awkward age. Almost all of the kids were amateurs and most did their own singing, but we were fortunate to have some "ringers" in the adult cast - professional singers/actors who couldn't be credited with their real names because our student film was non-union. Thanks to my father Julius and some favors he was able to pull in for us, we also benefited greatly from the professional musical arrangements (by my dad), professional musicians (top recording industry players, many of whom were members of the fabled "Wrecking Crew" of pop music), and the use of topnotch Hollywood recording studios A&M Records and Goldstar, where many giant hits were recorded by the Beach Boys, the Righteous Brothers, Herb Alpert, the Carpenters, and many others. The film was a 1-year labor of love for the filmmakers with help from so many generous contributors who donated their time and talent to help four film students bridge the gap from college to professional careers.

According to Roger Ebert's review of Midnight Madness, Ron Miller, who was running Disney at the time, saw this short film, and apperently, that's how Midnight Madness was developed.

@@davidwechter416 I saw the film for the first time, and I honestly agree with Ebert. This was back when Disney was in a slump at the time, and it seemed like the only way that Disney should get back to it's "innovative" roots was to basically capitalize on what popular. For example, The Black Hole was made to capitalize on Star Wars, Midnight Madness did the same with Animal House, and Condorman was a cross between James Bond and Superman. Thankfully, Michael Eisner revitalized Disney in 1984, so there was a silver lining.

If you haven’t seen the movie The Nice Guys starring Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling, run don’t walk to your remote and watch it on Netflix or Wherever. It takes you right back to 1978. You see middle school perspective of that era from Goslings 13 year old daughter.
Okay... So there was a very short period of time when I had purchasing power at a library and I bought this film. That's why I ended up with a VHS copy long after 16mm ceased to be a medium. Despite all the challenges, though, I've watched this every few years in one way or another. And there have always been ear worms. The songs are so great, with so many layers, that I'd love to know more about how they were created. If there's anything you can share about process, please do.
OK, since you are interested... The film was originally going to be a senior project at USC film school, where two of us producers were students. We started with the general idea of doing a musical about "a day in the life of junior high school." (This was in late 1976, two years before the film "Grease" came out.) At age 21, we producers were only 7 years out of junior high school ourselves, so the experience was fresh in our minds, and we felt that JHS was a fertile world in which to set a film. The musical numbers were a mix of songs that helped further the simple storyline and songs that conceived to bring aspects of junior high school to life in a fun way. I don't know if it was intentional or not that so many different musical styles were used (Broadway, 1960s rock, country/western, a jazz waltz, Dixieland/Charleston, a love ballad shuffle, and even a Jewish march), but that added to the fun. As a young songwriter and fan of Broadway musicals, I knew I wanted to write a couple of songs in which multiple melodies were song at the same time. A couple of the tunes were "trunk songs." The "Opening/Closing JHS Theme" and "The Itty Bitty Titty Committee" were based on melodies I had written a few years earlier, well before the film was conceived, and I decided to repurpose/incorporate them into the film -- maybe partly out of convenience (two less melodies to write) and partly because I thought they were good tunes that deserved an outlet. As the script went through various revisions, a couple of songs were dropped and a few were added from the original plan. One of the songs that got dropped was a tongue-in-cheek "scary" song that speculated wildly on "What Goes On in the Teacher's Lounge?" At some point, the idea of writing a song for the female villain Vicki came and went. The idea for "The Itty Bitty Titty Committee" came about when someone happened to tell me of that phrase that some less-endowed girls use in describing themselves -- it seemed like such a fun phrase, and such a relevant topic in a setting featuring kids going through that awkward age. Almost all of the kids were amateurs and most did their own singing, but we were fortunate to have some "ringers" in the adult cast - professional singers/actors who couldn't be credited with their real names because our student film was non-union. Thanks to my father Julius and some favors he was able to pull in for us, we also benefited greatly from the professional musical arrangements (by my dad), professional musicians (top recording industry players, many of whom were members of the fabled "Wrecking Crew" of pop music), and the use of topnotch Hollywood recording studios A&M Records and Goldstar, where many giant hits were recorded by the Beach Boys, the Righteous Brothers, Herb Alpert, the Carpenters, and many others. The film was a 1-year labor of love for the filmmakers with help from so many generous contributors who donated their time and talent to help four film students bridge the gap from college to professional careers.
