This is basically the Swedish dish " Pytt i Panna" , where you take your leftovers and chop them up into cubes and just mix it all in the pan. The traditional recipe is cubed potatoes, ham (or sausage ) , onion finished with an egg on top and a some beetroot.
Start the episode with my phone in my pocket: “oh, that sounds like Babish. I guess there’s no ad before this video.” Voice over starts talking about some fancy gin, not potatoes: “oh wait. Oh, there IS an ad. I guess the guy just sounds a bit like Babish.” Actual episode starts, Babish is doing an ad read for that same gin brand: “wait, what?” So, did you also do an actual ad for the gin, or is this just a supreme coincidence?
Did you know that the word 'hash' can be used to describe just about any mix of cooked ingredients? Wild, right? 'Hash' originated as any mix of cheap and chopped leftover foods! Yum!
When I was a kid, one of my favourite dinners was 'Mr. Greedy's Grub' from The Mr. Men Cookbook. It was a simple recipe: put alternating layers of chopped potato and sliced onion in a pot, add water, and boil until the onion is soft, the potato starts to break down, forming something like wet mashed potatoes but with a wonderful onion flavour. Then add chopped fried sausage (or corned beef, the book suggested, though we never did) and serve. I'm not really sure what it's really called; I've never seen another recipe like it. I'd love to see what you make of it!
This is the only place where things I would never eat or things I know I don’t like, I would eat because it just looks so perfect and I trust babish knows exactly what he’s doing

The potato dish is very reminiscent of a Tunisian dish that's called potato shakshuka, it has a Tunisian spice mix called Bajar. Only thing I remember that's certainly in it is cinnamon, but there's probably some cumin as well, along with other stuff. Anyway the dish is chopped onions fried with paprika, then the potatoes and the Bajar, top with some eggs cooked to your liking, and serve with a white crunchy absorbent bread of your choice. If I wasn't as drunk as I am right now, I'd look up the actual recipe and translate it. Thanks to Google for autocorrect
You're missing the tomatoes in there, which is practically what makes it shakshuka and not potato hash. It's one of my favorite "I should cook *something* but I don't want effort" meals.
@@greenyawgmoth I'm sorry guy but I'm not missing tomatoes. There while they are a key ingredient in "regular" shakshuka, they don't belong in the Tunisian potato shakshuka. (This reply was typed while sober 😜)

I figured it was to fit the bacon better in the pan, as it cooks it tightens up and would fit better flattened down but that’s just my guess. Also when i think about it it could stop the bacon from curling up but now i’m just making up stuff. We need a basics with babish: bacon.
I've been pulling my bacon in the center for a while now. It's to help the bacon fit in the pan so the ends cook nicely. Pans are hottest around the center and coldest at the sides, pulling the ends in by pinching the center helps a lot with evenly cooking the bacon. Once it shrinks, you can just flatten it out and cook it as you usually would.
“Alternatively do you have any leftover baked potatoes? Of course you do. You love baked potatoes.” For some reason you just sounded like Cecil Gershwin-Palmer. (Of Welcome to Nightvale)
I was half expecting him to say at the beginning, "ok guys so to start we are gonna plant our own potatoes and go through the growing process." 😂 Since he loves making stuff from scratch.
Thanks for the meal idea! I just made it for my wife but with my own spin to it. Here's how I did mine: I made the bacon first then used the bacon fat to fry the chopped up onion. I seasoned with oregano, celery salt, and chives. After that I added the cubed potatoes and chopped bacon. I then sectioned off the 4 eggs till done.. O yes, I also used a pinch of cayenne pepper..
This is basically a fancy version of well known danish leftover dish, biksemad! We usefully do this with leftover meat and potatoes, throw an egg over it, and drench it in sauces like ketchup haha!
Did you know that the word 'hash' can be used to describe just about any mix of cooked ingredients? Wild, right? 'Hash' in the U.S. originated as any mix of cheap and chopped leftover foods! Yum!
I get the impression that Babish doesn't mess around when it comes to alcohol, and while this did come across as very "advertise-y" I trust that it's actually pretty damn good gin for him to take this sponsorship.

I think I found a good challenge for you. I've been watching a show called "Rescue Riders" on Netflix with my niece and nephews. THANK YOU for this recipe. After watching this (and rewinding over and over again for clarity), I popped myself into the kitchen and made it to the letter (except for the sage...i didn't have any). My family LOVED IT!!!! You rock!
Seeing the OG kitchen in the Basics intro was a wave of nostalgia. Made me realize how far you've come since then. Congrats on the new kitchen and another kickass video! Glad we could be a part of this journey with you 🤙🏽
Fun fact, that isn't the OG kitchen. If you watch the first couple vids he made as Babish(iirc the Parks and Rec burger was the first episode) he's in a different kitchen, and thats the actual OG kitchen
I don't mean that to sound all "uhm. ACTUALLY" it's a thing I think about sometimes looking at the different kitchens, especially after watching that Being with Babish episode were he read his forward about where he was in life then
I know you probably have thousands of comments to read through but you have inspired my wife and I to cook at home using new a intriguing recipes. Even as I’m deployed we both still try and use what we’ve learned from you to make better dinners/breakfasts etc. I can’t thank you enough for your videos and keep on keeping on my friend. Plus I love the MRE Steve jokes here and there lol.

We call this meal "the mess" in our house and we eat it day or night. When my dear, sweet old aunt comes to visit, she always mistakenly requests "the nasty" for breakfast. 👀

Another ingredient that kicks your hash up a notch: some smoked paprika mixed into your potatoes.
So much yes!
I made this but had no bell peppers so I used carrots. While cooking the carrots became somewhat caramelized and made for an amazing sweet but savory dish without overpowering and complimenting each flavor. Highly recommended✌️😁

Ah yes, Hashish with Babish.

Yeah, I was getting definite CGP Grey vibes from the diction in this video.

This is basically the Swedish dish " Pytt i Panna" , where you take your leftovers and chop them up into cubes and just mix it all in the pan. The traditional recipe is cubed potatoes, ham (or sausage ) , onion finished with an egg on top and a some beetroot.
came here exaclty looking for this comment, haha i saw the thumbnail and was like Oh, pytt i panna?
Start the episode with my phone in my pocket: “oh, that sounds like Babish. I guess there’s no ad before this video.”
Voice over starts talking about some fancy gin, not potatoes: “oh wait. Oh, there IS an ad. I guess the guy just sounds a bit like Babish.”
Actual episode starts, Babish is doing an ad read for that same gin brand: “wait, what?”
So, did you also do an actual ad for the gin, or is this just a supreme coincidence?

Hearing folk not from Scotland say Scotland makes me feel so special.
Next episode please: Rice... yes, just simple rice.
Haha in his fried rice video he cooked the rice in oven. As an asian this both confused and amused me to no end.

It reminds me of that because he made that in an earlier episode
You're missing the tomatoes in there, which is practically what makes it shakshuka and not potato hash. It's one of my favorite "I should cook *something* but I don't want effort" meals.
@@greenyawgmoth I'm sorry guy but I'm not missing tomatoes. There while they are a key ingredient in "regular" shakshuka, they don't belong in the Tunisian potato shakshuka.

“Of course you do, you love baked potatoes”
Are we not going to talk about the little scrunchie thing he did with the bacon??
That's the only reason I'm down here
Yeah, what was that? He didn't even keep it going - it just flattened out later.
Maybe to help it not stick
Big difference between me and Babish: I would have eaten it straight out of the skillet.
he is also able to cook food for human consumption
“Alternatively do you have any leftover baked potatoes? Of course you do. You love baked potatoes.”

Thanks for the meal idea! I just made it for my wife but with my own spin to it. Here's how I did mine:
I made the bacon first then used the bacon fat to fry the chopped up onion. I seasoned with oregano, celery salt, and chives. After that I added the cubed potatoes and chopped bacon. I then sectioned off the 4 eggs till done.. O yes, I also used a pinch of cayenne pepper..
