Aside from dying naturally, there have also been a number of government policies throughout Asia that have encouraged Mandarin as opposed to any of the other Chinese languages. Cantonese is definitely one of the bigger Chinese languages though, and despite having a decline in the number of speakers, is still going to be around for a while.

The first time I had a transit in Hong Kong Airport in the 80s on my very first flight as a child in my life, I came across a black family. It was also my first time to see any black person in my life. We were taking the bus (there were no air bridges or jet bridges then) from the plane to the terminal. The family were conversing among themselves in Cantonese. I tried to learn from my dad's cassette tapes but, didn't really understand it. It had its own book to go along with the tapes. I still marvel at that black family speaking in the bus at the Hong Kong Airport so many decades ago. I've never experienced this again even living here in Canada. Nowadays, I transit in Japan.

I love this, it's great seeing barriers broken down the instant you swap to someone's native tongue. I'm from UK myself and it's very easy to fall for the reserved nature most tend to adopt here, so seeing that being cut down to become simply humans talking and laughing together is absolutely beautiful. I think what you do has more impact than you perhaps realize. Thank you for being amazing!
