There's a video out there where he does that for an interview; though it isn't super in depth. I believe it was around the time when his DC book released.
@@citycrusher9308 He’s been my dream casting for years-so perfect. He’d still work as a veteran Batman, like Ben Affleck’s was, and he’s even recently said he’d love to play the character, but it sound like James Gunn wants to take the DCU into a young-new-superheroes-y direction, so I guess that dream will never come true 🥲
@@citycrusher9308 In the JLA letters section (yes, DC printed letters to the book editors way back when), they asked for readers casting a JLA movie, with actors living or dead. James Franciscus of Longstreet was Barry Allen/Flash, Don Galloway of Ironside was Hal Jordan/Green Lantern, Chris Reeve was Clark Kent/Superman of course, Lynda Carter was Diana/Wonder Woman, and John Gavin of Psycho and Spartacus was a contender for Bruce Wayne/Batman. It was a great discussion topic, long before the internet and bulletin boards and IRC. Too bad that Alex can't use some old headshots to put them in costume... ;-) EDIT: I forgot that Lyle Waggoner (of later Carol Burnett Show fame) was competing with Adam West for the Batman TV show job...
Amazing art and artist. Truly not only his drawnings are amazing but the designs are also the real parameter of how a comic book hero should look like.
Dude, you're a real legend. You paint these classic heroes like they're greek gods; the lack of visible linework and the dynamic lighting, and the overall smoothness of everything... Gives me chills! It's so great to see the characters in simple costumes. I don't hate the modern armor but to me Batman is a highly trained man in a cloth suit. You NAIL that. Some of the best Batman art... Ever.
The way the Cowl fits around the mouth in Alex Ross’ beautiful artwork reminds me so much of how Robert Pattinson’s Cowl fits around his. Maybe that’s why Robert’s Cowl is my favorite in all the movies so far, it reminds me of my favorite comic book artist’s fantastic work!
Re-runs of The Adam West Batman and Star Trek were the first TV shows I remember watching as a child, along with cartoons. This was in the early 1970s, before PBS became widespread. There was definitely something special about seeing live-action fantasy/sci-fi that made it seem more “real.”
Thank you so much for everything Alex Ross!!! Your Legacy will remain forever!!! Particularly The Kingdon Come!!! I write this comic and Superman gives History!!!
The fact that you have a costume room means that every single director of a dc movie could’ve gotten your suits and copied them and used them to make the perfect superhero suits
Books: literary stories that paint a picture and feelings with words. Read at your pace. Take with you anywhere. Movies: visual moving experience that uses sound, scenery, action and dialogue to 'lead' you through an experience, like a rollercoaster, no pauses. Comic books: best of both worlds. You can't hear anything, so maybe your eyes and brain get to "savor" the imagery more. Unlike a movie, you own this scene. You're holding it in your hand, not hitting pause on a screen using electricity. Unlike a book, it's showing, not telling. All movies start as comic books, anyway with storyboards. And screenplays, often derived from novels are written. So, there you go, comics truly are the halfway point between novel and movie. So many kids learned to read just because of them.
Batman : War on Crime is available in beautiful hardback as Batman : Krieg …in German. When will we get the hardcover versions of Ross’ large format books in English? The softcovers don’t open flat unless one breaks the binding.
I have to admit I've seen _some_ smaller pieces by Alex where I'm like "Oof, that could have been done better" but to think that this man probably looks at art that would blow anybody in the world away and thinks "That looks rough" is just hilarious "Your own worst critic" indeed
I LOVE Alex Ross' artwork. LOVE LOVE LOVE! However, my inner Star Trek geek would be remiss if I didn't say that at 8:30 in, that's Frank Gorshin from Star Trek TOS, "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield."
Im glad he paints superhero’s he could do so much other stuff it’s a blessing Batman is my favorite character but jsa covers were incredible when I first started collecting.

I actually completely love the skin tight fabric Batsuit. As time has passed and whenever modern comics use the classic iconic batsuit, my imagination has projected unto the fabric as being something that is designed and engineered in the batcave. So even though it isn't obvious armor, it is nonetheless very hyperdurable material with the capacity to absorb impact, energy, etc. I imagine as if superman's fabric based costume has the same durability as superman as so for the most part when superman has bullets bounce off of him, his suit is also not bothered. I imagine Batman's traditional suit to essentially have the same phenomenon, but not by means of being alien but because Bruce is a Polymath and has mastered every field of expertise on the planet and has essentially engineered a fabric with a superhuman quality. I long for a live action Batman that has a skin tight suit almost like the comics, but is adapted to film via the aesthetic of a Navy Seal Tactical swim suit.
The Psychology of Batman as Detective Comics before now. What an huge Historical Inspiration. Even the young Gen at our Haunt, I use Batman to help them figure out their Characters 😆
Batman beating on the street thugs on the rooftop was my favorite scene in the 1989 movie. "That's MY Batman", I thought. I prefer that to supervillains, except Joker and Riddler, who appeal to the detective side... I'd like to know where Alex gets the costumes made for his live models that he says he photo shoots for poses to paint later...
Sir, I hate to be that guy but the cover at 00:40 and the cover for the The Shadow/Batman crossover always irked me the wrong way. Bruce has odd sized teeth that bulge in an odd way. I know I might be crucified for this comment but I mean no ill will. I love your work, it has been formative in my life since childhood.
Two things about Batman movies: 1) They STILL have not done the proper Joker. They've done some unique takes, especially Joaquin Phoenix's version ( Taxi Driver meets King of Comedy), but have not explored the Alan Moore explanation. He isn't already a bad guy like Nicholson and Ledger. He isn't a guy that puts on makeup like Ledger and Phoenix. He was a nice guy loser with problems, a soon-to-be-father, at that, who was TRANSFORMED physically into The Joker. He can't take the makeup off or decide to put it on when he feels crazy. He was mentally and physically turned into The Joker, a force of chaotic nihilism. Leaving out the permanent physical change makes him seem willfully, an evil man. He is playing make believe like Batman, putting on "a mask". 2) We want to see the comic book costume used in movies. Since 1989, we've only got the movie version, all black, that only got blacker as they removed the yellow chest symbol and belt. It can still be a sculpt, or it can be a muscular guy like Chris Reeve in spandex with BLANK eyeslits, like the movie Deadpool proved can be done.
The first Ben Affleck Batman suit was pretty spot on pity they ruined it for armor. We go for the fantasy. Now if only they would go with a true wonder woman suit star spangled speedos and all.
Living Legend. I first saw his work in a Terminator miniseries in 1988. It was beautiful art, but I could tell he was still learning. By the mid 90s, he was perfect. The Norman Rockwell of comic books. But, I do not consider him the greatest comic book artist of all time. His art would work for any medium. To be "comic booky" requires a degree of cartoonist, stylized imagery. Exquisite, painted art doesn't quite qualify. So, who is the Greatest Comic Book Artist of All Time? I want to say Jack Kirby, but he isn't. I could day John Byrne, a double threat as writer/artist, but I won't. The Greatest Comic Book Artist of All Time is.... Michael Golden. I will prove this assertion.
It's funny coz I hate the look of Batman with Adam West, respect it coz it's part of the legacy but damn. Yet, I can't get enough of Alex's work and the old comic book look.
Alex's take on Superman and Batman have stood the test of time. Heroes come and go. Legends never die.
Superman : Peace on Earth and Batman : War on Crime are masterpieces in my view.
Legend don"t die, they transform.
I like how he maintains that classic look for superheroes and that simplicity it's a breath of fresh air.
he will get killed if he gets shot
That’s how EVERY comic character in EVERY media should be portrayed but unfortunately we don’t get that kind of respect
I would love to see a full video of Alex Ross taking us through his toy museum.
There's a video out there where he does that for an interview; though it isn't super in depth. I believe it was around the time when his DC book released.
I think we all need a musiem with full height sculptures of Alex Ross'es characters
That's a gr8 idea.
I have a copy of that Batman choking the Joker painting in my room. Awesome art work.
Thanks to Alex Ross I can never be satisfied until I get a live-action movie with Jon Hamm as Batman.
great choice in casting (he may be too old for the part now though)

When Kingdom Come came out I had never seen a comic so well done with such wonderful art.
Thank you Alex Ross for inspiring other artists and expanding our imaginations
Including my 8 year old grandson
no one brings out the MAJESTY out of superheroes like Alex Ross
Even the quick sketches and early layouts are brilliant @AlexRoss
I love that painting of Batman and the Shadow, is really cool.
Thank you, Alex Ross for this as a lifelong fan of Batman.
Dude is a legend
I've loved your work from the beginning and the way you draw Batman is the way he should be big ears and menacing. God bless.
I agree that coming back to and refining your work is essential for improving your skill. And what better subject than Batman. You rock, Mr. Ross!

My art teacher gave me a tip on how to see flaws in your work: flip it upside down- if it looks good, you’re on the right track.
I'll always love that picture where Joker and Harley are dancing and the next one where Batman breaks it up lol
My favorite artist. Period.
Breath taking artwork, stunning
Alex, we NEED to see more of those life sized Superman and Batman figures, PLEASE!

Marvel has a severe problem when it comes to smudges paint brush look with no detail especially the muscles and everything about the face.
