I’m 75 in a month, never learned to sail, last year managed one day of the two day RYA beginners course but couldn’t face the second as the other students weren’t beginners…knew the jargon and had the basics already. I had none of that. I’ve contemplated buying a Mirror and just teaching myself through books plus trial and error (I’m basically non social!) but I don’t know if that’s viable. The camping part I’m experienced at and own all the ultra lightweight gear. That’s the part of this type of sailing that’s so attractive. I know of no other person that I’m more envious of than Roger. He seems to have carved himself out a great slice of life. And makes hypnotic videos too.
Roger, I don’t know why I so enjoy watching you set up your boat for the night and prepare your dinner but, I do. It all seems so peaceful and calm and unhurried. Good on you.
Ok, Roger, I'm going to "do it" I've been watching your videos and reading your book and you have me convinced. I'm going to build a small boat and cruise it here in the waters around Vancouver Island. I've picked a design and am just about to purchase the materials to start the build. That's good sailing area. I'm down in Portland, OR and the river is a harsh mistress for all sailing craft. Someday I'll take a trip up to the Salish Sea and cruise around in the salt water.

Dear Roger Barnes. I am a 52 yr. old Italian American male. YOU INSPIRED ME (more than any other TH-cam channel) to BUY A TRAILER SAILER. She may not be a dinghy, but she's certainly a trailer sailer. She's a 1983 Tillotson Pearson Freedom 21 Nantucket style cat boat. She's a very beamy boat with a gunmount spinnaker, extra high coaming around a horse shoe shaped cockpit, no standing rigging, and has a carbon fiber mast pole. She has a 2 burner alcohol stove and a sink in the galley, has a forward V berth cabin, and sleeps 4 people. She was in a sad state of neglect when I found her, but I have spent thousands of dollars restoring her to her original condition. Hopefully I will sail her this October in Lake Erie. THANK YOU for inspiring me do something this RECKLESS and CRAZY in my fifties! 😄👍
Man, all I watch is your videos. My wife and cruised for 5 years, 1991-1995 aboard a Pearson 35'. I bought a Mariner 31' which is a beautiful boat, made in Japan. I had planned to do some long distance cruising, Bahamas, Caribbean, etc. I just turned 73(it hurts to say it!). I went for a short cruise a year ago aboard the Mariner, which is a great boat. Refrigeration, solar power, etc. On that trip, after two days of deliberation I decided that I did not want to be reefing down at 3:00 a.m. in a gale. I had sort of scratched sailing and then YOU came along. I really enjoy your videos. I too like simple! The older I get, the more I like simple. All that being said, I am considering a Cornish Shrimper 19. and would appreciate your thoughts on that boat for a coastal camper. I also like your choice of background music on your videos. Fair winds. BTW, I thought about writing you because I saw your photo aboard a Shrimper 17 on their home page.
The Cornish Shrimper 19 is a very nice boat. My one word of warning would be, don’t expect to use it for trailer-sailing. They take about half a day to rig after launching. That’s why people tend to keep them afloat. The shrimper 17 is a better bet if you want to trail your boat somewhere new each weekend.
Don't know where you are located at but in the Netherlands you can rent these Valk Boats (keel dingy) with similar tents and also matrasses for the cockpit. Much fun for a week.
Your videos are a form of poetry, with their unique imagery and rythm. As such, they need no other form of justification. As an invitation to sail simply, they are superb. Many thanks for the time and effort you put into producing these!

How many hats have you lost during turns? (I loose a few every summer). I have a tip to give (for everyone). I pin a string to my hat and has a pin at the other end as I pin somewhere on my clothing, so every time my hat goes off, I just pull it in and puts it back on my head 😉
Again, another great video and your production is smoother each time. There are many videos of life on the water but I find yours the most relaxing and knowing you are not perfect or glamorous makes me feel more human. Being a sailor of a small boat relieves me of a great deal of fuss but also allows me to go where the big ones cannot and that makes all the difference.
I greatly enjoy your videos so I bought your book, it arrived early this week on my birthday and I am currently enjoying reading it on my daily train commute to work.
Thanks Roger, for another relaxing cruise, I can almost smell the seaweed drying out as you weave your way through to find that quiet sheltered mooring or should I say, grounding. A lovely experience that you share with us. Shallow waters have a charm of their own provided they’re not too muddy.
Thanks Roger, I have dabbled with dinghy cruising since meeting Margaret Dye 30 years ago. We sail replica 19th Century Drontheim fishing boats from the North Antrim coast and its a great antidote to life.

The more episodes I watch the more often I come to the realization that we are kindred spirits. I truly enjoy getting away from the crowds during my camp/cruise excursions. Not that I’m anti-social. I do enjoy cruising in company of like-minded individuals, but I also look forward to my times alone, and I do enjoy a beer or two after physical activity. Love the sound of early morning song birds, as well a s the owl in darkness.
Thanx Roger! Gave up dinghy cruising after 36 years. A roof over my head in my Coromandel still feels like a treat though. And I camp in it as if it were a dinghy. Love your stories. Envy the places you can go in 25cm of water. That is still what I mis with 66cm of draft and additional weight.

I too live on Vancouver Island and do have a small sailboat. It’s a 16’ Danaca. There were only 25 made here in BC and every once in a while I get wind of where another one is. I too love poking about for a few days at a time. I even took her out off Nootka Sound far out into the open ocean enjoying the big rollers coming in off the ocean. Most places I take Whisper the water is deep right up to shore. You are totally right having a boat you trailer to new places to explore is the closest thing to feeling alive in this mixed up world. I enjoy every one of your videos thanks for inviting us onboard with you.
I am locked down in Melbourne, last night a massive storm came through and has taken out the power until Sunday afternoon at the earliest. My wife and daughter have been despatched to beach house and I am home in warrandyte by candle light with my iPad watching you in magnificent France on that fantastic boat. With a glass of red and a bowl of home made soup before I go to work in the morning. Life is pretty good. Thank you for your brilliant clips, I am certain they bring much joy to many. Really nice what you said in the end of the video. I lived aboard a 16 foot cabin dinghy sailboat, now building a 20 foot weekender which is 3 months from go to the water, I will live aboard again. Big boats big problems. Small sailboats are freedom! Thank you, your content is great.

For those of you that ARE sailors, seek out the vessel that you think will work for you! I also So Enjoy Roger's videos - to the point where I took my own advice above and chose a particular boat to do these things in! I had my new to me boat out last weekend and started the process of getting to know her. I know she can do many things you've seen Roger do and soon I'll be out there doing it. I know, how do I know? Having sailed a 40ft cutter rigged long keeled wooden 1950 old boat single handed or just me and a crew for many years from the U.K. and all around the Med, I have now bought myself an old wooden GP14 dinghy. I an intending pottering and sailing the Broads, the north Norfolk coast and the Wash. then I will be towing her onto the continent to further explore. Who knows where I will end up. Not a bad way to celebrate my 70th birthday on the 30th April. Lovely videos. Right up my street.
Despite the fact that you are evidently massively enjoying the beauty, and way of life and cruising in France, it is a little comforting to know that in some cases "it doesn't work as well as cheddar". As always totally inspiring. Slow living at its best.

I’ve been sailing my Marshall Cat Boat for a few years and I love it. Before that I was all about racing and speed, but as I get older, I just enjoy cruising about!! Thanks for the videos!!

Ah, another traditionalist at last! Cheers! My wife makes fruit cake in the autumn to be kept suitably drunkenly moist with ample tipples of Irish whisky right up until it's ready for Christmas. Best served at midnight with sharp old cheddar and strong black tea. And like yourself Roger ours is taken along on voyages (canoe trips) to be savoured with wine (she) or whisky (me). Don't forget the cheddar. Escapes come in any number of variety but sharing the same goal. ATB.

I do love to see your videos pop up on my page. They are very relaxing and have a feeling of escapism. I notice you still have the canvas tent and you have changed anchor up front from the fishermans to a plough? Not sure about the cheese on cake. That was a step too far. Well done and keep it going. I am now the proud owner of a 1971 mirror dinghy. Had a few bits to do including fixing two holes in the hull but hope for a maiden voyage this weekend. Thanks again.
Both anchors can be used interchangeably. I used both of them overnight, but ended up lying just to the plough by the morning, as I moved off the beach during the night (not shown in the video) and ended up lying to what had been my stern anchor. As that anchor was ready to deploy I used it for the rest of the day. It was a little more inconvenient, as the side it was stowed ended up under the sail each time the sail was lowered, but the other anchor was tied down and the rode stowed away. - Cheese and cake? Standard in Lancashire, where you would use tasty Lancashire cheese, but it works as well with cheddar. Try it. You'll be surprised.

Fruit cake and Wensleydale cheese is quite usual in Yorkshire. They now add apricot or cranberry, etc, to the cheese now. I often use good cheddar or the +apricot for this. Hope the French product was good. Your channel has given moments of respite for the soul, during World events. If only the World was the same. Btw: the luxury (Nutella?) food bar, - your expression was priceless, a smiling, polite 'Oh crikey!' 😁

The knit hat and the smock are great. I can only imagine what it must be like to be cold when sailing. Here on the Chesapeake an awning for shade while sailing is almost a requirement. And nights without heat, humidity, and bugs are rare. I have to move to Maine:)

Enjoyed that! Most restful...I need to overhaul my own trailer shortly...think the wheel bearings have suffered from being dipped in the sea...the wheels also need repainting...need to get a lights panel. Think my own rig with the the Mirror is light enough not to need a registered trailer. Must say I prefer the British way of sticking your vehicle number plate on a towed vehicle... though I presume there are regulations about trailer weights and when they need to be braked etc. too.

I do enjoy cruising in company of like-minded individuals, but I also look forward to my times alone, and I do enjoy a beer or two after physical activity. Love the sound of early morning song birds, as well a s the owl in darkness.
I find it strange setting up the boat tent in the middle of a view from somebody's house. It feels too public.
@@RogerRoving I’ve also felt that when setting up in a small bay surrounded by summer cabins.

Gave up dinghy cruising after 36 years.
A roof over my head in my Coromandel still feels like a treat though.
And I camp in it as if it were a dinghy.

I too live on Vancouver Island and do have a small sailboat. It’s a 16’ Danaca. There were only 25 made here in BC and every once in a while I get wind of where another one is. I too love poking about for a few days at a time. I even took her out off Nootka Sound far out into the open ocean enjoying the big rollers coming in off the ocean. Most places I take Whisper the water is deep right up to shore. You are totally right having a boat you trailer to new places to explore is the closest thing to feeling alive in this mixed up world.

I am locked down in Melbourne, last night a massive storm came through and has taken out the power until Sunday afternoon at the earliest. My wife and daughter have been despatched to beach house and I am home in warrandyte by candle light with my iPad watching you in magnificent France on that fantastic boat. With a glass of red and a bowl of home made soup before I go to work in the morning. Life is pretty good. Thank you for your brilliant clips, I am certain they bring much joy to many. Really nice what you said in the end of the video. I lived aboard a 16 foot cabin dinghy sailboat, now building a 20 foot weekender which is 3 months from go to the water, I will live aboard again. Big boats big problems. Small sailboats are freedom! Thank you, your content is great.
Thank you Roger for the care and effort you put into your filming, it shows. Words well spoken too at the closing, has encouraged me lately to go back to dinghies after a 50 year hiatus in cruising yachts. First run away next week, several days l hope In my modified 14ft.

I had my new to me boat out last weekend and started the process of getting to know her. I know she can do many things you've seen Roger do and soon I'll be out there doing it. I know, how do I know? Having sailed a 40ft cutter rigged long keeled wooden 1950 old boat single handed or just me and a crew for many years from the U.K. and all around the Med, I have now bought myself an old wooden GP14 dinghy. I an intending pottering and sailing the Broads, the north Norfolk coast and the Wash. then I will be towing her onto the continent to further explore. Who knows where I will end up. Not a bad way to celebrate my 70th birthday on the 30th April. Lovely videos. Right up my street.

My wife makes fruit cake in the autumn to be kept suitably drunkenly moist with ample tipples of Irish whisky right up until it's ready for Christmas. Best served at midnight with sharp old cheddar and strong black tea. And like yourself Roger ours is taken along on voyages (canoe trips) to be savoured with wine (she) or whisky (me). Don't forget the cheddar.
Escapes come in any number of variety but sharing the same goal.

I do love to see your videos pop up on my page. They are very relaxing and have a feeling of escapism. I notice you still have the canvas tent and you have changed anchor up front from the fishermans to a plough? Not sure about the cheese on cake. That was a step too far. Well done and keep it going. I am now the proud owner of a 1971 mirror dinghy. Had a few bits to do including fixing two holes in the hull but hope for a maiden voyage this weekend. Thanks again.
Both anchors can be used interchangeably. I used both of them overnight, but ended up lying just to the plough by the morning, as I moved off the beach during the night (not shown in the video) and ended up lying to what had been my stern anchor. As that anchor was ready to deploy I used it for the rest of the day. It was a little more inconvenient, as the side it was stowed ended up under the sail each time the sail was lowered, but the other anchor was tied down and the rode stowed away. - Cheese and cake? Standard in Lancashire, where you would use tasty Lancashire cheese, but it works as well with cheddar. Try it. You'll be surprised.

Fruit cake and Wensleydale cheese is quite usual in Yorkshire. They now add apricot or cranberry, etc, to the cheese now. I often use good cheddar or the +apricot for this. Hope the French product was good. Your channel has given moments of respite for the soul, during World events. If only the World was the same. Btw: the luxury (Nutella?) food bar, - your expression was priceless, a smiling, polite 'Oh crikey!' 😁

The knit hat and the smock are great. I can only imagine what it must be like to be cold when sailing. Here on the Chesapeake an awning for shade while sailing is almost a requirement. And nights without heat, humidity, and bugs are rare. I have to move to Maine:)
Yes, we don't really get bugs round here, and I tend to forget they're a problem in other places. Midges can be a nightmare in Scotland though.

Enjoyed that! Most restful...I need to overhaul my own trailer shortly...think the wheel bearings have suffered from being dipped in the sea...the wheels also need repainting...need to get a lights panel. Think my own rig with the the Mirror is light enough not to need a registered trailer. Must say I prefer the British way of sticking your vehicle number plate on a towed vehicle... though I presume there are regulations about trailer weights and when they need to be braked etc. too.
