      Watching these guides is very helpful but it also kind of ruins the game for me because it reduces everything to pure numbers and strips away all the flavor and charm of the game. When you watch these guides it makes it seem like the entire game is won or lost based on where you put your first city and what civ you have. Fully 60-70 percent of the options in the game are complete trash according to him. Civs, units, religions, techs, buildings etc you should never ever use, really reduces the game to a spreadsheet where only the stuff at the top matters and everything else is to be ignored. I know these guides are meant for highly competitive multiplayer matches on very specific settings and you could probably get away with almost anything against the computer players on easy but it is impossible to ignore once you've learned it lol

    In the perfect sacred sites game I'd, A) only Byzantium, and B) need a faith-based pantheon. If you buy out three of the faith buildings (using your bonus) it's a -possible- for a renaissance win. (well, by the time your tourism catches up at least). It does suffer from the same investment problems of the Piety tree, but it is very quick IF you get it rolling. Of course everyone is sure to catch on as you close in on it.

      +Anna Alu If you dont' play in a competitive scenario, where this kinda of route victory is actually viable, It's most likely that you can do a better sacred sites game with, Celts, Maya or Etiopia than Bizantyum, just because it's to hard to use their extra belief bonus. At least was what happened to me, I love cultural/religious foucused games and I tried this sacred sites victory, but I wasn't able to do with Bizantyum (because of the weak early faith generation), on the other hand with the celts was a easy win.

My cities were converted by the time candi arrived and were suffering a lot of religios pressure from 2 religions. These guides are the reason why I love playing against AI on Prince. I'm not a good player, I only won a diplomatic victory on Immortal with Saudi Arabia, so I don't like doing extreme strategies, but I like seeing what's good, what's not good, and playing around with the not good strategies to do an uncommon victory, just because I feel like doing weird stuff. I'm not going to play the meta (such as... Timing research discoveries with ruins, selling buildings before razing or before my city is taken,, AI exploiting, etc.), I'm going to be a god on a lower difficulty with shitty strategies (Honor strat, farm barbarians (with specific mods), or Piety start, never go down liberty).

    • @cedarsapling
      @cedarsapling 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      These strategies are heavily biased in favour of multiplayer. In the singleplayer environment your win conditions are very different since war is much less common, but against AI on prince you can win with almost any strategy anyway if you're playing competently, so it's kind of a moot point.

    • @vlaceomuadlai2592
      @vlaceomuadlai2592 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@cedarsapling I can't remember and don't understand what my point was tbh, but you're right. I guess I chalked up playing competently with playing using meta-strategies, but it's probably more that you can use non-meta strats and still play efficiently within that strat, as long as it's an effective enough strat within your difficulty area.

    • @linminhtoo
      @linminhtoo หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@vlaceomuadlai2592 prince / king / emperor are fun to explore new strategies. with immortal you can still pick an interesting strategy but it's very difficult and i have had to reload many saves to go back and change an important decision (e.g. deciding whether to pursue a wonder when an AI will beat me to it midway) to not fall behind. deity you pretty much are forced to stick to tradition, 4 core cities, science game until you catch up in tech and then maybe try to capture capitals or go for science victory. unless you start with a specific civ with a very specific goal (e.g. with huns and going for early domination could be possible even on deity due to the battering rams)

    I trolled a few public lobby games yesterday and went Piety with Maya, and took Heathen Conversion with Raging Barbs. It was suprisingly OP. I gained 3 or 4 units in the same turn several times simply by moving my missionary adjacent to the barbs (you don't have to actually convert them.) It may or may not be "optimal" but it was a fun change from the typical tradition/liberty play, and put a lot of pressure on some noobs.

With piety discount units are crazy cheap and can be built in one turn saving cash or hammers for building. Imagine for example buying for faith crazy cheap chariots one turn before chivalry and immediate upgrade then to camels using saved cash. Crazy cheap warriors to mohawks. Pikes into winged hussars. Buying pictish warriors with faith repays crazy quickly. Also denying it to AIs is strong

    Faith Healers is actually one of my personal favorite pantheons, either for warmongers or for those surrounded by them. +30 healing means you actually heal for 50 every turn, without medic, which means units will last far longer unless the enemy can kill them in one round. It lets your units go back to barb-hunting quicker in the early game, it makes units planted in nearby forts or citadels virtually unkillable, and it lets you be relentless in conquests since you can convert conquered cities and then heal up your units in just a turn or two. March makes this pantheon even stronger, giving the same healing regardless of movement or attacking. Mounted units on roads can hit faraway enemies and then cluster around cities to heal up and do it all over again, and air units can heal up faster for a more relentless assault on the enemy.
    If your religion game is strong enough to convert your neighbors via early pressure, or if you bring an aggressive prophet with the army, Faith Healers combined with Just War can make for an unstoppable invasion force as you now gain bonus strength while attacking, a stronger defense, and a maximum of 2 turns to fully heal even the most badly wounded units. A prophet may actually be the superior option here as you can defeat the enemy army in front of the city, THEN convert, so the defenders don't use this pantheon against you. Or, if you're surrounded by warmongers and want a small but efficient army so you can focus on culture/science/etc, Defender of the Faith with Faith Healers will let your minimal defense force hold much harder advances with minimal casualties. But, this pantheon doesn't provide extra hammers, gold, food, science, culture, or faith, so obviously there is an opportunity cost, and you'll probably be in a better spot if you don't need it. But when you need it ... nothing else provides the same kind of bonus.
    But, I don't play multiplayer. AI opponents don't calculate for this pantheon to bring enough ranged units to one-turn-kill every unit they attack and can't shoot horse units while they're dashing in and out; players who have these abilities would negate a lot of the benefits. And although your opponents can't do much to stop you using this pantheon in air battles, the fact that they can use it against you may negate the entire thing.

    If you are building wide and playing a faith based game, I can see a lot of use out of Ancestor Worship. If you open with Piety then go into Liberty, your cities can build a shrine faster than a monument, and can already produce 2 culture on their own with a shrine. One from liberty and one from ancestor worship.

  • @danielnelson3136

    Dance of the aurora is actually meh, not that bad though but it was at one point useful in my game. You have to deforest the tundra tiles to get faith from them, and deforesting does give between 15-12 hammers towards the city the worker is from. And sometimes due to bad RNG and luck, you'll spawn in an area 40% tundra, and unless you're willing to scout for 3-5 turns more before settling your capital, you're either left with settling now next to 40-60% tundra, 20-10% snow, 20-10% plains/hills grassland, or losing initiative for a much better capital location with higher grasslands/hills and maybe river/mountain. So in one of my games I decided to just settle in an apparent bad spot, as a liberty player, and made use of dance of the aurora to be ahead in faith with other players whilst they're busy IMO from my scouts doing the wrong things to get ahead. As meh as dance of the aurora is, that gave me that tiny edge to be second place in the rankings.

    Kind of ironic that you talk about not working plantations when you have chocolate resources, which are pretty good tiles with a plantation. Citrus plantations are good too. Not particularly great, but decent enough.
    Also, some perspective on excess food bonuses: Aqueducts are great, they give what amounts to 40% of excess food, it just gives it retroactively when you grow. Taking both religious food bonuses is barely more than half of an aqueduct.
    Finally, you can actually get great prophets with 5 spread religion charges, if you have the Great Mosque of Djenne, and buy prophets in the city (not get free prophets appearing from wonders or social policy, or automatically generating them before the industrial era), it will have 5 charges, and you can use one and then enhance, or use one and then plant.

      I have definitely done it. Starting in the industrial era, when you go into the city and purchase the prophet, it gets 5. Next time I do it I can grab a screenshot. It just doesn't apply to prophets that auto generate, or the one you get at the end of piety, or if you get one from leaning tower.

    Hey Filthy! Firstly, I've been lurking for a long time without speaking up, so here it goes: thank you so much for putting up your videos, I am a very casual player due to time issues but when I actually do get time to play I want to play at the highest level I can, and you've helped me grow a lot as a player, you've also helped me appreciate the game a great deal in all its complexities. Thanks!
    Secondly, I came here after I watched your recent Spain game where you had three natural wonders and warred 3-5 five players at any one point. Awesome! However, you did go holy warriors in that game. Can you explain this decision a bit for me? Was that because of very specific circumstances or was the tenet(or belief?) changed in the NQ Mod recently?

    Heathen conversion might actually be kinda useful to negate rebels in an unhappy civ. War and spread to the detriment of your happiness, tank the unhappiness penalties, and then keep missionaries in all your cities for free units every so often. It's like having a military city-state ally on steroids

    I’m in the renaissance era. My religion is dominant, and I am trying to capture Egypt’s capital. They founded a religion and picked the goddess of protection pantheon. And it completely stopped my advance. I had to use a great general and star fortress next to their capital. Then I used a great prophet on top of their capital to convert their religion back to mine. Just so I don’t have to deal with the goddess of protection pantheon.
    PS it’s 30% increase City attack range combat strength. The city and Range unit was able to one turn kill my trebuchet.

    TLDW:
    more than half of the belief thingies you can add on to your religion or pantheon are basically useless (tithe is the best) so don't pick anything that is situational
    save up faith to purchase great people so you can spam great scientists or engineers
    pagodas are the best religious faith-purchase only building (each one gives 2 happiness, 2 cult and 2 faith)
    buying regular units with faith is super expensive don't do it
    don't use prophets to spread religion, just use missionaries on faithless (no followers) cities or let it spread passively
    if you have a city which you essentially dominate (most followers/pressure) then new citizens born will be turned into your religion (i.e if a city has 3 followers and 5 total pop, when it grows to 6 pop you will gain a 4th follower automatically, 6-7 pop would be 5-6 followers, etc)
    if you can spread missionaries in early game then you get a huge leg up as each city with mostly your followers will just provide more pressure and eventually snowball passively without more help (there is two enhancer beliefs that help this, one that increases the pressure distance by 30% and the other increases pressure by 25% (50% with printing press)
    pressure from trade routes only happens if the base city (where the trader starts the route) isn't pressuring the city passively already so do it on far away ones
    holy sites provide a bonus pressure for like 10 tiles around so place them on border cities if you can safely get your prophet over there
    holy cities (cities with holy site) can't be razed unless there are no followers of said religion, then you can raze it. general protip: sell buildings while city is being razed since you wont get them back anyways
    capturing other peoples prophets counts for city state quests, and if they still have their 4 religion spread charges, can be used to found a holy site.
    desert folklore (pantheon) gives a hammer per desert tile, and would be a KILLER combo with a petra city (if it actually had a bunch of desert tiles)
    *IF YOU ARE PLAYING A MULTIPLAYER GAME, PEOPLE MAY BE ABLE TO FOUND A RELIGION/PANTHEON ON THE SAME TURN. IF THEY PICK BELIEFS BEFRE YOU, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO USE THEM, SO IN A MULTPLAYER GAME, BE QUICK WITH YOUR CHOICES, OR SOME OF YOUR BELIEFS WILL BE TAKEN.*

    • @MetaKaios
      @MetaKaios 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think FR confused you with his incorrect usage of 'Holy Site' when he meant 'Holy City'. A Holy City is not a city with a Holy Site; it's the city where a religion was founded.
      As for "holy sites provide a bonus pressure for like 10 tiles around", I don't know where you got that from. Didn't hear such a thing in the video.

    I played a game on Archipelago once where i was Germany and the person next to me was Indonesia. the guy on Indonesia spammed cities extremely hard because he got the happiness from settling on other islands. he also had tonnes of faith so he decided to get sacred sites(tourism from faith buildings) and by the medieval he was influential with everyone in the game except for Brazil(obviously) despite the fact everyone was attacking him. we never finished that game (someone left and didn't come back) but he was going to be influential with Brazil in about 10 turns so we accepted he won. i think you should try a game using this strategy, id be interested to see how fast you can win with culture victory if Brazil wasn't in the game or if you played as Brazil.
    P.S there was basically no iron on the map which meant no frigates so that probably helped him although if you can win before people get to frigates that might help

    Youre guide's are good Filthy, loved youre liberty guide.
    Regarding messengers of the gods, while Cartage is an obvious civ for people to make use of this, for me it's my preffered pantheon for Maya. Maya already has a shrine giving +2 science, and i find that takign messenger of the gods with it and building a liberty Maya allows to create quite the early tech lead i a good game. Say Maya settles 6 city's and builds it's shrine + roads to those city's, it's going to have 12 + 12= 24 extra science early on. Personally i thing it's a good idea to stack bonusses to a civ, science is a bonus for Maya and toghether with messenger of the gods that can be a really significant advantage. This is compounded by the consideration that Maya needs to get to theology asap, and that providing it has liberty and got to theology that it can spawn 2 great scientists for academy's soon, thus allowing it to consolidate a tech lead. I tried this strategy on SP immortal and it's very powerfull in that the tech lead made can be quite overwhelming, the more so if you can sneak in NC soonish and maintain a well growing cap.

    • @rickyhemant8096
      @rickyhemant8096 8 ปีที่แล้ว +53

      I don't think it is ironic. A lot of astronomical and other discoveries were made by religious men. Religion itself doesn't stop innovation and science until its followers start interpreting knowledge as a threat to its beliefs. So, for example, a lot of Islamic scholars contributed in great amounts in the fields of astronomy, algebra (initially created for Islamic inheritance laws), geography, spherical geometry, spherical trigonometry (done in order to find the direction of Qibla, the Islamic calendar, and the time of prayer). These innovations were, indeed, contributed by religion. Now, I am not saying that religion ALONE can contribute to science. I'm sure someone else would have found these ideas if it wasn't for Islamic scholars. However, I am merely pointing out that religion and science aren't that far apart as Dawkins and Harris make it to be. Scientific revolution in Islam fell only when a scholar started fearing the pursuit of knowledge as challenging his faith, rather than understanding God's world.
      Is there a God? I don't know. Probably not. However, the psychological effects (at least the positive ones) have contributed a lot of good to the world. Religion is just a religion. Its feasibility in the modern world, and its "goodness" is all dependent on how its followers act. You can have followers who act barbarically in the name of religion, in that case people are quick to blame the religion rather than the followers. However, they also don't recognize that ANY ideology brings militancy. Look at Stalin. He gave up his Georgian Orthodoxy and became an atheist, and executed a lot of Christians (not to mention harassment, torture, imprisonment etc) for the purposes of establishing communist ideology (they were afraid that the church would challenge their State ideologically).
      It is easy, and quite fashionable to bash religious people nowadays. I am not religious particularly, I am just exploring different ones, however I am appalled by the stupidity of fellow atheists when they bring up trivial points. They already dislike religion and then engage in confirmation bias to find instances when it was harmful while ignoring all other effects. The same goes for religious people. They ignore all the good brought upon by atheists and science and only point at Stalin.
      At its core, religion makes you feel better. It does so by assuring people that someone cares and provides them community of like-minded people. That's all. There is nothing more or less.

    I rarely play competitively, But when I do, it's usually with friends that I know. Thus I often tend to mess around with the religion a fair bit. Religions such as 'Pornography' and 'Twitter' would come about, leading to many, many jokes. Such as Pornography having Fertility Rites, or Twitter having Liturgical Drama and Religious Texts
    At one point I decided I would pump production out of my cities using the religion, so I actually took Monument to the Gods, then later Religious Community.
    Combined with the Marble I had nearby, somehow my capital could suddenly build Classical wonders in around 4 turns. I named the religion 'Egypt'.

    You've warned me off from the high-speed click-fest reflex game that is No Quitters free-for -ll, but I can still enjoy our little LAN games at the maker space.
    I am left wondering how I find out about other players' religions. There's so much of the interface I have yet to learn. I had been playing for about 6 months, always trying to maximize culture nd tourism. I had read in Zigzagigal's guides about the theming bonuses reached through trading works of art, but I didn't discover the trading interface until a few weeks ago.
    There's just so much depth to this game, and I'm actually "on the short bus" for a variety of reasons, all from the neck up. So maybe I'm in too small of a minority of people who even need a walk-trhough of the interface, to find it all. I do have some local players who will help, and some of them are also somewhat autistic, and are thus more understanding.
    Anyway, I've been enjoying watching and listening to your guides. You are very thorough on what you do cover. Thanks, again.

    In some games "To the glory of god" even better than finishing racionalism. When you bought great person for faith price of next same type great person going higher. I dont remeber exact amount but i think for finishing racionalism max prise is 2700 or 2900 faith and for the "glory of god" max price for great person is 1700 faith. If your faith income high enough and game goes long enough it could be much better.

    I've never planted Great Prophets, or used Missionaries. Now I will(missionaries if it's beneficial to me).
    I have a question though. I'm assuming you use the first 2 Great Prophets on Founder and Follower beliefs. Would you then save to get a third to plant, or would you spend on Pagodas(for example), then get a Great Prophet to plant? Or maybe this is also situational, and depends whether you need the happiness or not? Maybe getting 3 Pagodas for example, would still get you a Third Great Prophet nearly as quick, and you get the Pagodas thrown in?

    Once upon a time (with waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too many hours spent on this game) I was spain, settled a city next to the Fountain of Youth, and figured I would get faith healers to give myself immortal stealth bombers. Additionally I was near the "center" of the map, so I could hit almost any city with my stealth bombers.
    The point I'm trying to make here is not that I had this great game, it is that most beliefs CAN be useful, sometimes the circumstances are unusual.

    • @frisianmouve

      Still seems like you better could have gone for one with nature. The bonus from that is doubled for Spain so you get 8 extra faith from natural wonders. Besides with air repair and fountain of youth bonus your stealth bombers would've been immortal anyways. And you need to not do anything with your unit for the faith healer bonus which when you're at war you don't want to be doing.
      Edit: ok i found out that you can't work the fountain of youth so one with nature still would've been useless there, but i stand by my point that faith healers is still useless even in that situation
