  • In part 4 of Taryl & Slippers' custom 1958 RJ58 Wheel Horse resto-mod, Taryl goes over more of what he had to do in order to get this thing ready to wheelie! A lot of thought goes into a project like this as well as plenty of trial and error. So sit back and learn with the crew as they get this old "nut roaster" roasting again! And as Slippers always says... There's Your Supper!!

My late father, a WW2 aviation mechanic veteran had me working on his vehicles as a kid, taught me all the basics ect. he would have turned 99 yrs old on new years day. The awesome "Grass Rats Crew" make me chuckle and give me joy you guys are an inspiration. I was gifted a kids gas mini bike this christmas, basically just a frame and a box of used parts, a perfect christmas present I've only dreamed of. I've already stretched the frame by 7 inches and built new front end forks. I love watching your content, thanks.

Amazing taryl , you and musti are my favorite two to watch , you are always thinking two steps ahead , I grew up in the 40s and 50s it was get out in the garage and you could buy a 50 dollar car and get parts cheap from the junk yard and keep it running and learned a lot along the way , you are an inspiration and giving good ideas on how to make things work and where to get parts and info, we had car shop classes in school back in those days and where a kid could learn hands on it was great now days they no longer offer those classes its a shame..

Yes and no. You can't heat up cast iron and then instantly cool it down like you can steel. Or it will crack. The case of that transaxle is made out of cast iron. So your better strategy is to heat it up until it's glowing orange then beat the pin out with a hammer. Spray a good penetrating oil on it while it's still really hot will help to break the rust bond. But you basically get it orange Spray penetrating oil on it then beat on it with a hammer until it cools down and repeat until you get it to work loose. Case iron is alot more temperamental than steel is and it's brittle. You really have to pay attention to what you're doing when you're dealing with cast iron or your gonna screw it up. It's not forgiving like steel is.

I use to watch and help my dad build me something like this years ago out of a 1960 Sears custom garden tractor. At the time I was amazed at his ideas. He took something I thought would never run again and built something so cool that l rode for years! He always told me if you can use a torch and a welder. You can build anything... Love and miss you Dad.

Ill admit i was a little bummed when you chose to not use the live axle. But seeing how good this setup works im impressed! That is a wheelie riding rat rod. Last summer i built a race mower out of a john deer saber with a 420cc engine with torque converter that drove a live axle. I had to use a go kart steering rack because the original steering had alot of play. That thing could easly do 65 down the main road. I road it to are local tractor show and it turned alot of heads. I look forward to seeing part 5!

Heat-Quench story. My Uncle & Father tried getting an 1 & 1/2" Backhoe Stabilizer Pin out by heating it with an Oxygen & Amphetamine Torch "Cherry Red". Did NOT move the rusted Pin. I got my Propane Tank & large "Weed Burner" attachment. And some old Fire Bricks from a Wood Stove. Built a small enclosure around the Pin & Stabilizer. Heated the Pin with the Propane Torch. Then quenched it by spraying just the Pin itself with a water bottle with holes poked in the cap of the bottle. That Inch and a half Pin came right out with just a few taps of a Hammer. IT WORKS, every time! Thanks Taryl & Sons!

Concerning the cordless tools, you should consider painting them white to cover up the make and model. When they send them to you greatly reduced in price, you then can advertise them.
    Just a thought.

I have a 63 753 same trans. Shift gears slowly it can get stuck in two gears at once there was a service bulletin you can find that said changing the shift rails would solve it
it included part numbers it it does get locked in two gears remove the shifter and use a large screwdriver, align the shift rail reinstall the shifter handle it only happened twice in fifteen years to me but I was quick to shift from one gear to the next
    good luck with it

I'm sure there's a n answer but I'm having trouble figuring out something. When the engine was turned, and the rotation is opposite what it was, what keeps the tractor from running in reverse?

Can you modify the disc that you use to have on it for brakes and mount it on your trans where you have the band brake now. I think that would be pretty cool just don’t know if you have the room and something to get you down to that small shaft. Thing looks awesome
