If you can afford it by a new or almost new diesel, they will run easily 10,000 hours before needing to be overhauled and the fuel economy will pay off.
Doubtful it'll ever pay off for most people. First on a new welder diesel gets you a 10k premium. You should be able to get 6k+ hours out of a gas motor, minimum 3-4. For that 10k premium you could get 3-4 new gas engines. Then it'll be cheaper to replace than getting a diesel overhauled. With how much more expensive diesel is in certain areas than gas, it really narrows the gap in fuel savings. Unless you have access to offroad diesel. For most people the math just isn't there to purchase a diesel.
If you can find a good old SA-200 Lincoln at a good price buy it. I started out with one use it for 30 years made a lot of money with it. I overhauled it twice and I still own it.

Seemed more like youre a lincoln guy i respect it, what are your thoughts on like smaller welder/generators like the miller bobcat 225, trailblazer or the bobcat 250 ive got a 225nt itll weld pipe and structural settings, have you had any experience with those machines or know of people with good or bad experiences
Whatever type of welding machine you purchase for field use, I recommend diesel, not gasoline. It's ideal to have a diesel welding machine with a diesel truck. Extremely low maintenance compared with gasoline powered.
Question about yall school im a junior fixin to be a senior and im in a votech school for half a day weldin already and ive gotten my stick and mig cert and im close to gettin my tig cert and there all plate can i skip all that or di i have to redo them or what
Truth. Although Miller isn’t much good for drinking either🤣 Yes, Miller makes fine machines. For shop use. But there’s a reason every pipeliner and vast majority of mobile welders have a Lincoln on their trucks….
That is a great, simple, to the point video! James, that was a perfectly honest presentation.

You think a miller 220 is a good enough start to mobile weld /shop weld
My 1st welder miller bobcat 225nt propane fueled. No issues, but as u know propane don't like cold weather. But oh well.

I seen another WWA video and they said you can test to skip certain classes. Call them and ask to be sure.
You can progress through the course faster if you have the skills.
Does any one have a Lincoln classic 2 for sale
Would I be fine using a Lincoln ranger 225 on a pipeline?
No
Maybe a 305
Fk no.thats even if you get hired running that machine.
