  • I got sent this old Tri-ang Princess Louise by a chap called Alan. It's an old model that hasn't run for years and has a lot of sentimental value. Bit of a challenge this one so a two parter.

    Bill,
    I am in tears of joy sobbing regarding this repair.
    I will be for ever grateful for your skill and dedication to keeping such beautiful items in working order.
    I have read the comments and it's noticeable that you're a dedicated specialist and from my perspective you have made my Christmas. To those who follow you they are willing you on to succeed as am I. I look forward to seeing part 2 like everyone else.
    It was a gift from my mum and dad. Alan

    My nearly identical Triang Princess has a long screw down the chimney. I thought that was the case here, but I was wrong. You solved it, well done!

    Morning Bill, your a very brave man, but at the end of the day it's broken so you can only make it better. This model looks almost identical to my Princess Elizabeth, same crimson colour, looking forward to seeing how you've got on. I did smile when the hammer came out for the Wheel. I've always said to my kids, if it can't be fixed with a Hammer or wd40 then it's beyond repair!!! Your a master bill I've learnt so much following your adventures, and it's inspired me to have a go myself. Thank you and keep up the good work. Looking forward to following the new layout. Eddy xx

    Good one Bill. You certainly have your work cut out there . But I can understand the sentimental value attaching to this loco having got one myself at Christmas 1971 , also given by my Mum and Dad. I remember the big movie that year was “The Great Escape” - some things never change! So it will be really great restoring this to running condition . I’m sure it will bring back lots of happy memories . Well worth doing .

    My Princess Elizabeth has the same smoke unit and I’ll never forget the day I over-filled it… Smoke coming from everywhere and I thought I’d wrecked it. Looked bloody impressive though and fortunately no lasting damage done… that came at a later date, I think I may have been about 11 when it derailed and rolled off the layout onto my bedroom floor.Cylinders split and valve gear all bent. Tried to fix it myself as my dad would’ve gone mental and of course botched it and it went into the box and was hidden before being forgotten about. Fast forward nearly 40 years and my daughter discovered it while visiting her granny. I took it home, ordered up and replaced the broken parts (I could’ve done with the internet in the late 1970s I can tell you!!!) and stuck it on the rolling road with no expectation of the thing working, but did it not go first time. Slowly at first, but then at a decent speed. I’ve still to give her a good service as everything has been in a hiatus for the past five or six years but hopefully she’ll run in front of a passenger train again for the first time in over 40 years in the spring.
    Keep up the great work Bill, you’re a real inspiration to us all.
    All the very best,
    D

    I am just in the process of "restoring" my old Tri-ang Hornby Britannia which I got for my 8th birthday in 1969. It's very similar to this, both the chassis & the body. It has been played with a lot & the body isn't in great condition. Mine has plastic wheels also. I'm not going to replace these. My cylinder bracket was broken too as well as the motion bracket. This old plastic gets very brittle. I have new ones of these on the way. I have replaced all the wiring. The motor is pretty good. One thing I have noticed is that the valve gear on mine is much finer. It's a pity that the smoke unit elements are no longer available. Anyway, good luck with it.

    Hi Bill.
    Blimey, this has got to be one of your biggest challenges of all time. Congratulations on getting everything apart in spite of the glue.
    I've come to the conclusion that this was probably broken by a young boy and, in a state of panic, he resorted to a tube of glue in the hope that nobody would notice the damage done. I might be wrong but I say that because it was the sort of thing I would probably have done in the same circumstances. Never mind Bill, these things are sent to try us.
    Alan, come on now Alan, own up. Was you that naughty boy who trod on the loco by accident, tut-tut? 😂
    Very much looking forward to part 2.
    Paul. 👍

    Bill, I take out the smoke element from all my triang smokers as they run a lot better without it . using less mili amps. You done great getting that body off .

    Care is needed with the smoke generators (synchosmoke) as the wadding used to be asbestos - safe if kept oiled with smoke oil

  • @schwarzalben88
    @schwarzalben88 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Where Triang originally fitted smoke units they used those manufactured by Seuthe, they were rather expensive so looking to Lionel in the USA Triang invented their own smoke unit with a cylinder in it mechanically attached to the wheels etc of the locomotive, This over in and out with the movement of the locomotive and forced air through the smoke chamber, expelling the smoke from the locomotive funnel in a 'realistic" puffing fashion.

    I also have this loco and it has all of the same damage: the cracked body; the broken cylinders; and a missing front wheel. I think it is caused by the smoke generator becoming too hot. Once I have rebuilt mine I am looking to line the front of the body with foil to try to reflect the heat and stop any future problems. Thank you for your videos, they provide invaluable reference.

  • @kleedhamhobby
    @kleedhamhobby ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Gee whiz, indeed! I think pretty much anyone but you would just have given up on this one as unrecoverable junk. But now you've actually managed to get the body off, and get the wheels off and remove most of the gunked up glue, it looks as if you have a fair path to rebuilding a working loco. I'd be inclined to leave the smoke generator out when re-assembling, but I guess that depends on the owner. I've worked on a couple of these myself, but nothing in anywhere near as bad shape as this. I've actually got another one, with a smoke generator, on the way. I was getting worried as I watched you working on it, as I was thinking "there can't possibly be enough time in this video for him to actually get this running". My fault, of course - you did put "Part 1" in the title,

  • @williamscates3915

    Seems like a straightforward job for you now the loco body is separate, the loco will look lovely running again.
    Hopefully the parts aren't too delayed in the strikes. Good luck and well done!
