My Grandfather James Hayes fought along side Tom Barry. He promised Tom Barry he would name a son after him. He named my dad Thomas Barry Hayes who was born in 1941 in Boston. My name is Thomas Barry Hayes Jr. born in 1968 and my son is Thomas Barry Hayes III born in 1998. I have photos of my dad as a child sitting on Tom Barry’s lap. Great history.

I don't have many people I'd refer to as heroes, especially in this day and age. But Tom Barry is a hero of mine. I must've listen to this a hundred times, and I wonder, if there's any hope left, or are we gone too far.

What an amazing explanation of how it was during such a sad time for Irish men,to sacrifice their lives,to give its people the freedom we have today, this freedom should never be taken for granted, nor should it ever be destroyed by our current Government bodies, that lack the understanding, pride,or the courage to not sell out the Irish descendents of such brave men of the past .My heart breaks, when I think of how it must have been like, for so many people in Ireland back then.I bow my head to all the Irish men women, that gave us all what we have today.Thank you ,and RIP.

"An effort made by a small group of men", very well said. Harvey's leadership, very well said. Forming an army leadership not based on a meritocracy, but on a social agenda.

In the Rising the rebels (ie, the IRB) had Major John McBride, a genuine military officer. McBride was at the breaking of the siege at Ladysmith, and told Pearse and Connolly that the best way to win against the superior numbers the British confronted them with was to "go Boer." And the holy feck, was he right!
Of course, without the genius of Michael Collins, that advice would have been worth piss-all.

Tom's recollections of the differences between the IRA in Dublin where everyone wore suits and carried briefcases and the IRA in West Cork where everyone would go long intervals between meals when you were in the Flying Columns, and sleeping wherever you found yourselves at that time. Also that every man carried a razor and toothbrush with them so that they would blend in with the populace .since they knew that a scruffy unkempt man would come in for scrutiny from the RIC and the Black and Tans.

His thoughts back then apply to any sincere struggle for freedom. Every comment Barry makes could also apply to the Vietnamese reveolution. He is not an educated man, yet to the Irish he is a General officer because his culture has produced a natural intellectual. General Barry can demonstrate that freedom cannot be given, it must be taken and fought for.
