These Irish deep dives are excellent. I’m an American but I am fascinated by the famine to recent era struggles for independence and a United ireland. I’d love to see a dedicated reading list video for deeper reading. You hit on books in the podcast but quickly and peppered in, so it’s hard to find later after I’m somewhere I can jot them down.
For modern history of the struggle I would highly recommend these 3 books The Yank John Crawley On The Brinks Sam Millar No Greater Love Séamus Kearney They are 3 excellent books by former Volunteers
I read Tom Barry's book in my teens while living near Newry in the 70's. His book was popular in Newry at the time. The Crossbarry "battle" was epic, an amazing example of a natural leader demonstrating extreme tactical awareness. Moving, communicating and countering opposing forces with ease. He was 60 years ahead of his time. Genius and inspirational.
@freebeerfordworkersThe only thing that I can fault is your casualty roll. The following Crown Forces were KIA at Crossbarry. These are confirmed by both tbe original inquest and CWGC. 1st Bn Essex : Pte Stanley Steward,Pte William Wilkins,Pte Joseph Crafter,Pte Sidney Cawley, Sgt Edward Watts, 2nd Lt Geoffrey Hotblack. RASC: Driver Cyril Martin,Driver William Gray,Driver Harold Baker. Black & Tan Constable Arthur Kenward. Strictly speaking you can also include 2nd Lt Alfred Tower who was wounded at Crossbarry and would later d.o.w. 9th June 1923. Also what Republicans dont like to accept is that Tom Barry failed an entrance exam for a position in India with the Colonial Office in 1920. Barry fies not mention this in his much lauded memoir and neither does his devoted biographer Meda Ryan. If he passed look how different the conflict would be in West Cork.
Derry is a wonderful place to visit it has a lot of history and a great place for night life. I have family on both sides and I love them all it is heartbreaking
The information from these videos is very interesting to me. One of my Great Grandparents came to Boston from County Galway in 1911. He was one of 11 children. He and two of his Brothers came over together. I can barely imagine what life must have been like for them. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. Slainte!
I really enjoy these history lessons. In April 1921, the Essex Reg. burned the family home in Castleventry. My grandfather, Dan Santry had already emigrated to the US, but his brother still lived in the house at the time. Interesting to learn more about the events in Cork during the war.
Being a Byrnes of Irish Catholic decent this is awesome Kevin. Australia has a huge number of Irish convict descendants and Irish 20th century immigrants. Thanks and keep them coming.
@huntingarete9214 a very famous Byrne was a member of Michael Collins squad against the British Intelligence in the War of Independence. Vinny Byrne. You will find interview of him as an older man on TH-cam.
Greetings from Ireland Kevin. Just found your channel and I am looking forward to binge watching your content. Thank you for your dive into Irish history. Excellent 👌 👏👍
I have that book, it was and excellent read and those men were incredibly brave. Being a musician myself I particularly liked how the Flying column had a piper playing whilst they were ambushing the British. Thank for the conversation fellas.
Wow, Knock Out content on this one. I have a new book to read, a new movie to watch, and new places to visit. A possible bent on a future podcast would be Irish American History in Boston and New York seeing as you're both Irish American.
Thankyou guys again, loved it as always. I agree about when your young you dont pay enough attention to history , but when your people die, you wished you'd paid more attention. The talk of Co. Cork was good to hear. My dad never made it to Ireland, but he never stopped dreaming about it. If God give me a chance id love to see it. My dad used to say that there were several Driscolls in the 3rd West Cork. If i remember right one of them was tortured by the english. There's a movie my dad had called Broken Harvest about bad blood between neighbors from both sides of civil war..i rented Black 47 from local library last year. Its about the famine & an Irish Afghanistan vet that started fighting the british. Want more Irish chats, please & thankyou both. Wish my dad was alive to hear this. God bless
Love these chats about Ireland. I've read a few books on the military side but it's really interesting to hear more about the historical events that led up to them.
really interesting stuff here from the both of you, especially from someone from Asia who has a difficult time fully understanding everything about the modern history of Ireland. I'm still wondering why there are so few subs and views for Kevin's videos!
Florrie O'Donoghue was the Intelligence Officer for the West Cork Brigade. He had a contact in the Victoria Barracks a receptionist who passed information to him. Interestingly she approached the IRA to rescue her children from their grandparents in England who had seized the children when her husband died and she wanted to return to Ireland. she paid them back well.
Kevin, I appreciate hearing the history of Ireland. I hope that you do some classes around this area ( Raeford) in the future. I was looking forward to taking some of your rifle classes with FCS. I’m sure theres a wonderful cadre still, but I have been wanting to take a couple of them this spring from you in particular. I’ve been a fan since you and Mike started doing the land nav stuff. Much love to you both and thank you for coming over and helping defend our country. You are proof that the “American Dream “ is still alive. 🤙🤙🇺🇸
I'm half way through a bio on Charles Stewart Parnell, a leader in the land reform movement you guys may be familiar with. This was back in the 1880's. Irish history is really interesting. The people went through some very tough times. These people are survivors, we in the USA need to pay attention.
Excellent Podcast and I have taken Mr. Collins's 1916 tour in Dublin. I would take it again and I have his book on the Easter Uprising. I hope to go back and do it again. I did not want to leave.
Should do a video on Dan Breen, he had a fascinating life, after the war of independence he ran a speakeasy in New York and scared the bejesus out of Al Capone when he had a run in with him,
As a 10yr old boy moving to England in 1966, it was a part of life. Just prior to moving to England spent 3yrs in the Philippines, terrorists were at work there. Coming to England continued a very common story to a young boy. Thanks for your education USMC Semper Fi
Oh man I was getting nervous lol. I’m so happy you came back sir. You brought Oisin too! Just made my ride to work, that hour sucks with nothing good to listen to.
I need one of these a month. Love these stories keep up the good work. Hire a guy to do thumbnails so the algorithm gets this out there to more people.
Thanks guys , great to hear you two talk (Kevin you’ll never lose that Louth accent )about our history and walk through what happened and the impact . “The Twelve Apostles “ by Tim Pat Coogan is a great book on Collins Squad for anyone looking for more detail on that part.
Give us some Belfast history. I was born in Saint Anne’s Belfast 1971, grew up in Aldergrove, Antrim area and saw some crazy things in those days. Love your podcasts, love to heard more about the north. Let me know if you need any material, been a copper in America for 25 years now.
theres some pretty grounded theories that say the celts were legitimately the first peoples to fully explore the world, almost every single ethnicity, culture, or group of people from ancient, ancient times speak of fair skinned, brown and coppered hair people COMING to there lands, not those people's going to ireland. all the way from the america's to africa. and were talking 1000's of yrs ago, basically just after the ice age ended. plus the temple city of orkney in scotland said to be 6000-12,000 yrs old. and the ancient scottish city that travels underground ALL THE WAY TO TURKEY!!!!!. shits wild.
Hey Kevin, if you do go back to Ireland and do that tour it would be great if you took your camera. Have a walk around like you did at the Museum or the Indian War battlefield.
I would like to ask a question (or make a request) I would like information on the quote or order "Our uniform will be that of the man in the street, the peasant in the field" This quote is attributed to Michael Collins (in the famous film by Neil Jordan) but I am positive that I saw this mentioned in an article as coming down as an order or directive from the IRA, but now I can't find the article! I thought I had saved it as a PDF but I can't find it among the MANY articles I saved on the Irish War of Independence. Any help on a positive source on this quote would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance & God bless!!!
Whoa, whoa. We can't get the whole story of Oisin delivering a baby in _affle _ouse? Regardless, fascinating stuff again. Also, Newgrange sounds like something I need to learn more about.
🍻Great episode, and please do more like it. I too wish there were more good movies about the fight for an independent and united Ireland. Unfortunately it's a long fight and a very ugly one on both sides. That doesn't lend itself to feel good movies for mass consumption. "The Wind That Shakes The Barley" is a great movie, and not one to watch if you're looking for a feel good celebration of the cause.
I freaking love the hear about the Irish history. The Irish sticking it to the red coats. I’m Hmong and I know what oppression is like and what an attempt of ethnic cleansing/ genocide is like. Hmong/ CIA/ MACV-SOG vs NVA/ VC/ Pathet Lao/ traitorous Hmong circa Secret War (Laos) 1960-current. MSG I love your stuff but MSG you have to stop the “ummm huh“ driving me crazy lol.
If I could I would, if I slow down and watch every word it will come across as rehearsed, if it bothers you that much listen to the audio on iTunes or Spotify, you can clean it up when there is no video, I have no script, no rehearsal, one take,
Mi lai massacre, American army just as capable of committing atrocities. Sure there was more in Korea as well. And what americans did in Cambodia falls into that category also. From Cambodians perspective, the helicopters just appeared out of the sky and killed everybody. To quote kissenger put anything that flies and kill everything that moves. This is coming from an Irish man whom saw the United States as the best country in the world growing up and you have allowed the elite to reverse that image. Take back your country American people, we are all counting on you.
The 2-worst bombings during the Troubles, were in Dublin and Dundalk done by the Protestant Extremist Group the UVF in conjunction with British Army Intelligence. Hundreds of Irish Civilians were injured and killed at rush hour going home from work. British Terror in Ireland has a long, long history.
These Irish deep dives are excellent. I’m an American but I am fascinated by the famine to recent era struggles for independence and a United ireland. 1798 Rebellion, resistance to the Penal Code-Ireland, a formerly great Catholic country, has a fascinating history.
For modern history of the struggle I would highly recommend these 3 books

They are 3 excellent books by former Volunteers
Also check out the Irish History Podcast
It sort of goes without saying that an American sympathizes with anti-British sentiment lol, it's our heritage
As Americans you can’t help but sympathize with the Irish cause 🇺🇸🇮🇪
