    A friend gave me three of these beauties. They were bought at a Korean grocery, and arrived in lovely white "lacy" containers. Oh Wow! They're totally different from a Bartlett or "regular" pear. I did peel them, as the peeling was a bit tough. I love these! Tomorrow I'm adding one to my morning oatmeal. Thank you, Matt.

    I have four types of Asian apple pear trees in my Arizona orchard and I love them: they are fully mature trees, and juice very well, or make pies or jams. They grow tall as most pear trees do, and require plenty of water, much like an apple tree does, but they are well worth the effort and their taste is SUPERB! My trees have been in the ground 19 years now. They begin to ripen in late summer, close to early September here in NW AZ.

    Pyrus pyrifolia is a species of pear tree native to East Asia. The tree's edible fruit is known by many names, including: Asian pear, Persian pear, Japanese pear, Chinese pear, Korean pear, Taiwanese pear, apple pear, zodiac pear, three-halves pear, papple, naspati and sand pear. Along with cultivars of P. × bretschneideri and P. ussuriensis, the fruit is also called the nashi pear. Cultivars derived from Pyrus pyrifolia are grown throughout East Asia, and in other countries such as India, Nepal, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States (e.g., California). Traditionally in East Asia the tree's flowers are a popular symbol of early spring, and it is a common sight in gardens and the countryside.

    • @inthekitchenwithmatt
      @inthekitchenwithmatt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the pears look like this then most likely it is an Asian pear. Pears ripen fully on the counter after picking. You can't tell by looking at it if they are ripe, apply a bit of pressure to the stem end, if it gives slightly it is probably ready to eat. Harvest them from the tree when they easily come of the tree by slightly twisting them.

    This reminds me we all have such very different senses. I could not smell my korean pear at all. The taste was of a less sweet apple and not ripe pear. Bartlett pears are much better and sweeter.

    They are juicy and tastee, but for me they come no where even close to the fantastic flavor of the large (not the small culls) Green Granny Smith apples. Crisp and sweet-tart, the Grannie Smith remains unsurpassed.

    Truthfully, this was more of a "blah" pear than a Ya pear, at least for me. Yes very crunchy and juicy, delicate apple or maybe even a watermelon texture, but bland and tasteless. Not terrible by any means, but not really worth it, IMO. For the price and the amount of protective wrapping, I was hoping for something like a Comice, bursting with sweetness and flavor. Maybe I just got a boring store-bought Ya and fresh off a tree would be better.

    • @inthekitchenwithmatt
      @inthekitchenwithmatt  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Interesting, try a different variety, there are several different Asian Pear varieties. Fresh definitely is best! haha. I just bought some the other day and they were not great, so the variety does matter. Unfortunately where I live, they just label them as "Asian Pear" without giving the specific variety.
