      He killed the power too quick by pulling the clutch. You need to stay on power and keep weight back to keep the front up for longer. That will rpevent going otb

    I've used the ramp method to overcome a wayward tree with a beautiful Ocean Blue GSA (shame-fee plug!) like Bret uses near the end. This ramp was constructed after my buddy tried to Kamikaze the large dead trunk with his Tiger 800XC much to my amusement, getting righteously stuck. I told him sometimes it's better to stop and think instead of just nailing the power and screaming. I hope he learned his lesson.
    I found that a small "ramp" on the discharge side of the obstacle creates a smooth landing as well. Nice video Bret, thanks!

    Excellent explanation of the "rolling point (?)" of an obstacle like this. Have seen the use of a "kicker" from other channels but never with a bike this big and heavy. Also, good to see the clearing the log following a stall. It's apparent that ADV rigs are like beauty -- in the eyes of the beholder -- and really dependent on how off-road your travels may take you. For me, the question was: how much weight do I want to lift more than once a day by myself in the event (predictable) of a get-off?

    If you make a small jump over a hill with an ADV Bike I am seeing the tendency for the nose to come back down very heavy. Is that just how these beast handle or is it possible to load/unload the suspension or use mid-air throttle to regulate the pitch of the motorcycle before the front forks take a pounding?

    • @BretTkacs
      @BretTkacs 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They can land heavy. The issue the day of this shoot was the new suspension was not dialed in and the compression and rebound were too much and the bike needed more spring sag.
      It's better now, but still a 600lbs bike

      J, thanks for hunting me down at Puget Sound Safety... the conversion was good

    • @MOTOTREK
      @MOTOTREK  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      In theory yes however on a large ADV bike that is less effective due the fact the rider has less effect on a heavy spring and bike than that of a trials bike, the duolever suspension on a BMW makes it a completely useless. On a trials bike you can hop the tires off the ground without even moving... not so on an ADV bike. So yes the theory is good but I have yet to see it effective in this riding.

    what tires do you use?

  • @y_a_r8080
    @y_a_r8080 6 ปีที่แล้ว +28

    Clutch-in as soon as the front hits the log is wrong and leads to nosedive. Rear must be under power when it's clearing the obstacle - the rider must maintain open throttle.
    To avoid whisky throttle, proper neutral standing body position must be maintained: body over center of mass, knees slightly bent and gripping the bike, hands relaxed on the bars. Practice clearing small logs until you can get the bike to land on both wheels at the same time

    • @BretTkacs
      @BretTkacs 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      open throttle when the rear hits can cause the bike to buck the rider off by kicking up at the rear... also and ideal landing would be front tire leading so the bike rolls onto its suspension

    • @3rdeddie
      @3rdeddie 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      He almost got bucked off because he grabbed the clutch. Watch the slo mo of his head whipping when the front wheel hits the ground.

    • @91081166116
      @91081166116 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You are absolutely right Y_a_R. Let the throttle open just a bit longer (no clutch) until after the rear tire climbed the obstacle. Landing on the rear wheel would be much more comfortable and safe anyhow. ... Interesting though that these basics still have to be explained to riders of such expensive bikes.

    • @burkerow
      @burkerow 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      "Interesting though that these basics still have to be explained to riders of such expensive bikes."
      Everybody needs to learn at some point right?
      Many/Most people who are doing this with these big heavy bikes are road riders who've bought them so they can get off the tarmac on something like a forest service road. Once you start doing that you want to take your skills farther, not in the attempt to be an enduro rider, but to be more skilled and competent when our road runs out be we want to keep going. What he's teaching might be basic on a 200 pound enduro bike, but it's an advanced skill on a 700 pound fully loaded ADV touring bike.

    • @RickGreen_McNutt
      @RickGreen_McNutt 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Y_a_R Take a Chris Birch course and he'll tell you the same thing as Bret, although Chris says clutch in as soon as the rear tire hits the log. If you don't believe Bret, then you certainly should believe Chris Birch. More throttle before the log will launch the bike more and land both wheels about the same time. This is harder to do on a big adventure bike, and much harder for a newer rider to do, and much, much harder for a newer rider on a big adventure bike. If, for example, the log no longer had any bark on it and it was wet (and therefore slippery), having the throttle on when the rear tire hits the log would most likely end badly for you with the rear end kicking out as it spun out on the log.

      I'd say almost certainly standing. You'll have a lot more "body language" control over weight distribution on the bike. You can lean back as you blip the throttle to lighten the front wheel then use your legs to mitigate that front wheel piledriving into the ground when you stick it.

    • @zugmeister314
      @zugmeister314 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well you should probably be aware of it, but like most things motorcycle you probably shouldn't let the possibility of something bad happening freeze you into inaction. BTW if it's right next to your engine it'll be almost impossible to fall on, just don't spear your foot!

  • @tuanoful
    @tuanoful 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Well, that landing didn't look smooth or safe. I'm not experienced at all in off road, but that just doesn't look good or comfortable.
    I would think that a little more throttle to try to "jump" and land on both tires instead of that jerky motion and hitting the front so hard.

    • @christopherplays4931
      @christopherplays4931 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The thing i worry about the landing is the front suspension if it breaks a seal there is no way you can rebuild it on the path unless you have tools and the replacements

    • @mrwest77
      @mrwest77 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I totally agree with JustThaor. I made several time this trick with mountain bike and definitely I wouldn't love to land in that way with the wheigt on the front wheel!

    • @captholic
      @captholic 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s because he didn’t jump the log correctly... he was talking about pulling the clutch in and letting the back tire roll over.......... Well, that landing is exactly what you get! Search double blip technique. Double blip is how you properly get over a log. I don’t care how big the bike is.
      And yes big bikes can wheelie

      @@najmabibn8188 A TW200 might feel more comfy, and the bike is so small it could go under that log. More seriously, that's a big bike for your inseam, which doesn't mean, if you have good riding skills that it wouldn't do, but may be something lighter with lower seat height might feel more enjoyable, like may be a DR650 or KTM 690.

    Walking pace my ass. At 3:11 and 3:18 you can see the rear wheel kick almost a foot above the log from hitting it so hard and fast and to make matters worse the clutch pull sealed the deal with a near face plant. Extreme whiplash on the riders neck if you watch his head whip forward and back. I have an ADV course and prefer to go just fast enough to keep the momentum going to slide the skid plate over the log. Yes you need a kicker. And if you go too slow you will be hung up. Bike will be stuck on the log and will not be pretty getting it off. Too fast and you break your neck. This as stated should be practiced on small logs first and only used if there is no other option around. Even if going around is a pain in the ass it is better than getting hung up on log. Or face planting. Practice at home then know your limitations when on the trail. I would stay on throttle a bit and try to lessen the nose dive.

    Jeez that front wheel dropping was horrible. Why wouldn't you stay on the throttle long enough to let the rear tire come down first. Works for trailbikes and I have been known to do it on my street bike over speed bumps and curbs.

  • @maheshy1
    @maheshy1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Disagree on 1 bit. I take off on throttle and land on throttle. When you took of the big log, you landed on your front wheel because you cut the gas while taking off. We all know that the rear suspension is a lot stronger than the front. So keeping the gas open keeps the trajectory pointing upwards giving the rider a better chance of landing on either the rear wheel or both wheels. Landing on the front is a bad idea.

      Thanks for the comments, Mahesh, but these are BIG bikes going over BIG obstacles. The last thing we want to do is go fast. We want just enough momentum to get over the obstacle. We are not flying or jumping over them like we would do on much smaller bikes.

    @3:05 you say "Pull the clutch so we get a nice rollover" but that surely looks like a right hand brake shot on the camera.

      Feathering the front brake to go "nice and slow", John.

    Riding a heavy bike into/over such an obstacle is a sure way to damage the wire wheels.

    Nothing against this channel, but "adventure" is a word for a motorcycle that belongs on a street at best or a fire trail at worst. They are the RVs of the off-road world. I don't doubt riding one around could be loads of fun, especially with camping/exploring in the mix, but trying to make such a big heavy bike an "off road machine" goes against physics.

      True all all counts... But riding a motorcycle in most cases is already not logical :-)
      To top it off this GS is certainly NOT even close to the most Offroad capable ADV bike!

    Not sure why you’re telling people to pull the clutch in before the rear wheel clears the obstacle?! Your own demonstration almost sent you over the bars. shutting the power off will always cause the bike to nose dive, the power should not be shut off until the rear wheel clears the obstacle. This will enable the front wheel to be pushed up and forward, not down and thus enable the bike to land on both wheels with a bit of practice. That’s from 36 years experience, and 28 of those riding competition trials.

    • @MOTOTREK
      @MOTOTREK  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The objective is to clear the obstacle slowly and safely, not fly over it.
      How many competition trials did you ride with a 600-pound bike?

      MOTOTREK I know you know you should not have landed with the nose first, but a better cross should be used as a tutorial.

    Or buy a trials bike and yeet over a 6 foot wall with no setup

      "Or buy a trials bike..." Says the guy who's never packed a campsite on the back of his bike and ridden a couple hundred miles at freeway speeds before hitting dirt. Street-legalness aside, you'll probably be road pizza the first good crosswind hits you...
