Josh I think you underestimate the use cases with a PC. Because the last thing I wanna do when the lights are low in my room and I’m sitting, eyes closed, enjoying music is wake up my computer, go half blind, go to APO, fiddle with 35 GUI sliders and be pulled away from the song just because the vocals got a bit too hot all of a sudden. I’d much rather reach out and find the 5th knob and twist to flavor without even opening my eyes. It’s about elegance not form or function

    • @Artem_Shepelev
      @Artem_Shepelev ปีที่แล้ว +3

I think you are overestimating this use case. It is certainly valid, but most people would rather be slightly inconvenienced by having to adjust APO sliders once in a blue moon, than pay $300+ bucks for such a niche device

so right Ben, both my DAPs have great eqs that i never use while listening to music as i find farting around with the dap ruins the mood, So much easier to just chillax and slowly turn a knob to adjust the sound. These ramped up the enjoyment level of my listening considerably. I like to turn the lights down low, close my eyes and get lost in a song, these allow my to make adjustments song by song if I like without ever opening an eye. They keep me in my happy zone. I love these products.

... I totaly ignored this at the time.
But after I compared the succa audio pre-amp eq to digital eq and "just" a tube Im hooked on analog eq.
It just sounds different. Less clinical maybe?
And I dont realy need much eq. I allready like my headphones.
But simetimes a little bit more bass, mids or highs make all the diff for a certain song...

Had the Lokius since launch, I am one of the few who don't like digital EQ. I buy headphones and IEM's I really like, then boost maybe the sub bass on certain music types. Easy to reach and fun to use, and I love to plug in and listen and to not having to change software profile.
    Good as always Joshua.

EQ like this is invaluable for those of us with hearing issues. Yes believe it or not millions of people have hearing issues yet love listening to music. It’s hard to believe how many higher quality amps lack tone control, hell they don’t even have balance control.

I have the loki mini in my office where I use SE connctions and the Lokius in the basement music room where everything is run on a balanced hook up. Both are fantastic for adding a little tweak to the music. I hate using eq on the computer or my DAP, much prefer the ease of turning a knob to customize the sound. These are not overly expensive and i consider them some of the best money Ive spent on this hobby.

That is indeed a very interesting DAC. I was never a fan of EQ, but my current system wrecks some of my poorer recordings to the point of not enjoyable. I ordered a Lokius to see what that can fix, and if that works I'll consider replacing my DAC with a RME.

  • @PhoggHawk

I prefer physical knobs, so this is appealing to me. I'd like to be able to reach over and tweak the EQ just on the fly, from song to song, but I probably won't be getting this since digital EQ is fine and I couldn't justify the expense when that is available for free and can potentially do a better job.

  • @kbar11
    @kbar11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Can't say it is a good use case but I like it personally. I have a schitt stack with Magni, Modi and Loki. Use Peace EQ to set up the different headphones and IEMs that I use but use the Loki to fine tune things either in game, middle of music or movie. I prefer physical knobs so once I get a Harmon Curve tune one the audio device I use I can add or take away things that I want with the Loki without fucking with the EQ. Probably not the best way to do it quality wise but I like it a lot.

Things were sounding a little boring, so I broke out my Lokius, night and day, a tad bit of boost, as the Denafrips is a zero gain system, and just livened things up. Very happy with my little Schiit! I miss tone controls, knobs, not digital.

I was looking for EQ compatible with MQA decoding and was led to ROON. I really wanted it to work but ended up proving that full MQA unfold cannot happen in any form if DSP/EQ is applied before the MQA DAC. We did this following ROON signal path mapping. The signal will only go to the DAC as original, high resolution, without MQA provenance. This is perfect use case for Lokius and the main reason I got one. I also like the feel of the knobs, but that just my subjective feedback. I also agree, EQ is for subtle adjustment. IMO, if you must go too hard in any area, something else is potentially a big problem. Love your videos!

One of the most wonderful things about the audiophile landscape right now is the amount of choice options and for a multitude of listening preferences. Despite a regular use of convenient & accurate digital EQ, I find that using physical EQ and other similar components is still so very pleasurable and engaging. I know that for me, in working professionally within the digital / virtual world on a daily basis, such a choice is a nice deviation and while making the mind / body connection & control with the music & tech I love. I have so enjoyed using their EQ line.

I can easily and gently tame some of the harshness of my Beyerdynamic 1770 pros now when I'm just casual listening and bring the bass down a touch too. The defeat switch is an easy way to put them back to stock. Just my initial thoughts after 20 mins of fiddling.

I had it, and its have bad perfomance as it degrade your output sound. After tests I sold it.
You cant EQ bass section you need cause there is not enough knobs, also build quality was bad (knobs wasnt centered at 12 oclock , almost all of them), also Ive notice sound degradation, when added this to my setup to poweramp pc 2002. Also Ive tested tc electriconic as pre amp for 60$ and it did it better as preamp. After that Ive made custom preamp on (original) Alps RK27114MC Potentiometer 50K that way better that TC electronic. btw I used only xlr connection with audiothechnica cabels from Japan.

I have a dedicated Raspberry Pi streamer, a CD player, a Turntable, and a USB connection for a laptop/tablet. All of those sources would need a separate Digital EQ. I want to set up the EQ for the best sound in my room and I want it to affect ALL of my source signals. The only way to do that is to insert a product like the Lokius between my pre-amp and my amp.

    Hey Josh!
    Thanks for another great review.
What I'd like to know is how you use software EQ with Tidal, as there is no built-in option for this?
My use case is the MDR-Z1R (which I know you love just as much as I do) with the Topping D90MQA/A90 stack. However, I'd truly appreciate a very slight boost in mids and an even more minor reduction in midbass (supposedly). However, since these are nuances, I am not really willing to go out of my way and spend hundrets of euros (especially considering all the taxes and shipping I have to pay for Schiit devices).
Would greatly appreciate a quick answer!

I run my Lokius in my stereo between a Freya+ with vintage tubes and two Parasound A-23s in bridged mono mode. These connections are all running over Mogami Gold balanced cables. Those drive a pair of B&W 706S2s and the Parasound pass-thrus feed to an SVS PB-1000 to fill in that bottom end the B&Ws just cannot quite reach well enough. It does what is says on the tin, and nothing else. Incredible clean without any artifacts being injected into the sound except those you intend. Highly recommended i my opinion.

I run a Bifrost 2 DAC, which could use software EQ, but I also run two turntables through a DJ mixer. A product like this is a Godsend. We call these Program EQ’s in our industry. You typically set it and forget it based on the setting. Some use full 12 or 31 band analog EQ’s, but the compact size of this works well in a home setting. So I and my analog brethren are the use case for this 😊

Its modifying a digital signal from the PC into your analogue amps, i'd say its far superior to this 6 band graphic EQ in terms of overall potential and tuneability. Just most headphone guys never discover this because this is in the realms of home and car audio which can get quite advanced in tuning due to room/car acoustics and its a much noiser/harsher chaotic environment than headphones. With a 6 band EQ you really dont know what frequencies they are boosting/cutting so instead of actually fixing your issue, you might even make it worse. There might be a specific sibilant spike at 7.2khz but your 6 band is just lowering down 5khz and everything else around it and not really fixing the real problem while making the music sound worse losing details in the other frequencies. With a parametric EQ you can literally choose 7.2khz and the Q factor aka how much it affects other frequencies around it and specifically kill that spike and not affect fidelity anywhere else. The headphone community is being gypped with inferior tone controls for the longest time.

As much as i prefer analog EQs, this is a very valid point. I wish this was a 12 band at least.

I run the RME adi-2 dac fs which has parametric eq with both frequency and q selection. The major plus of it being that you can save the eq presets by name for each pair of headphones used or night setting, movie, gaming etc. for the main hifi as well. Allows me to be able to eq my analog output into a Willsenton R8 integrated tube amplifier too. Amazing dac/preamp and headphone amp with parametric eq. Found my end game dac finally, lol.

Kind of, depends on the setup. Some people want to manipulate analog sound such as a turntable system without getting up from the couch. But I see your point.

If you don't have a computer based system you can't do it for free.

Too lazy to say what frequency bands. For that you get a thumbs down

Bands: 20Hz, 120Hz, 400Hz, 2kHz, 6kHz, 16kHz Took all of 15 seconds to look it up. Talk about lazy!

I wasn't referring to Josh though. Information is easy to obtain these days. I bet you're one of those who is constantly asking what products to choose rather than checking/listening to them yourself. It's a terrific little product btw. I have one that I run between my Emotiva XDA-2 DAC and Woo Audio WA-6 tube amplifier. I also use a Schiit SYS as a switch so that I can connect a Burson Audio Conductor 3 as a Solid State amplifier, it's a Combo headphone amp, DAC & pre-amp. While my listening is for the most part headphone based I also have a pair of Peachtree M25 powered desktop speakers with a decent but inexpensive subwoofer. It's an exciting time in audio I think because while you can spend a fortune you don't have to do so in order to put together a great system. I like a product such as this because my 61 year old ears benefit from a little tone control. In the old days it was FUN going from dealer to dealer and checking out gear but it's different today so you can order online, give a product a listen and return if not for you. I will advise to read about return policy though. Schiit is a stickler and returning to them is costly as you pay return shipping plus re-stocking. Nice products though.
