    The long tape means if you switch off (or otherwise modulate) the erase head the signal will come back much later. In the good old days we used to hang tape from the backs of chairs, running through the recording machine then into a playback machine on the other side of the room. Echoes that come back minutes later rather than seconds. Oh, so much has been lost!

    I'm a tape lover (and user) my whole life. I was almost hoping that you'd forgotten about the Echo Fix and I could be done with lusting after one. No such luck! The reason for making an "endless loop" of tape as long as possible is two fold. As others have mentioned, it's to avoid the inevitable wear you get from running the same meter or so of tape across the guides and heads over and over (each centimeter gets played every few seconds unlike a reel of tape thats up to 3600 feet long). No matter how precise the machine is, the wear and stretching is irregular. If the tape is too short, the listeners brain will perceive the "rhythm" of the pattern of wear which will be proportional to the tape speed.

    • @periurban
      @periurban 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think that's why the tape is so long.

    Sandy, would love to see a ‘from concept through to build’ of some kind of unusual synth or effect in a short form 10-15 minute video, with a way longer deep dive version available. Or maybe a series for your channel following the process of learning how to design and wire your own gear, in bite size chunks. Found myself being curious about building my own synths, amps and effects, but its still way off the deep end for me, and I struggle to hold my attention when it comes to electronics and engineering videos. Watching look mum no computers vids, thinking I’d love to build smaller versions of some of that kind of stuff, but can’t seem to find an approachable way. A video series going through that stuff, so even drummers could understand 🤪, might be a winner!
    Those looping tapes sounded ace Christian! Looking forward to this new labs!!!

    The comment that really resonated with me in this video was that you felt doing your own music would be an indulgence.
    I too feel guilty when I consider being "selfish" and embarking on my own compositions. I don't think twice of dropping everything at a moments notice for a client - but to grant myself time to be creative for me would seem luxurious. It's even more ridiculous at the moment as two of my large clients went bust recently so I have spare time. But because it would normally be "work time", I feel it is undeserving to use that time for fun, even though I have done all the tasks I need to do.

  • @MatthewleBlom
    @MatthewleBlom 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello, I suppose the long tape make it wear out less fast. The delay time is determined by the combination Motorspeed + distance between record and playback head. The piece of tape between the last playback head and the first head (erase) doesn have any effect on the delay time. (one exception will be the RE501 or SRE555 which has a loop/sample option which disables the erase head. In this case tape lenght + motor spead determines sample/record time.

    I may be wrong, but isn't the reason for the long tape loop so that it lasts longer? I know that the tag line for a certain tape brand was "rerecord, not fade away", but every time you record onto tape, there is a small bit of physical wear. Having a ridiculously long tape loop minimises that, and any possibility of the tape stretching because of unwanted tension

    • @lahattec
      @lahattec 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A long tape also allows for longer experimental effects, llike Sound on Sound, if supported. See here... th-cam.com/video/Z5F9SeiY_4s/w-d-xo.html

  • @michaeltamburello

    Avoiding tensioning issues I believe is one of the reasons also for the seemingly excess amount of tape required.

    I've finally settled on the list of things I want my modular setup to be able to do and located modules that are able to do those things, and with that this year I hope to get it started. I suspect that all-told it'll end up being around 4k Euros though, so that's a problem...
    The general idea of the setup is to be able to do a lot with recorded (acoustic) sounds, which I can then adapt in all kinds of ways. It'll be useable as a vocoder and harmonizer, be able to turn sounds into pads and drums on the fly and I'll be able to record directly into it from my daw so I can use any sample libraries I own to then manipulate them with the modular setup. If someone is performing live with an acoustic instrument, I'll be able to take snipets of their performance and accompany them using their own sounds as a base, all on the fly.
    That's the concept.

      @micindir4213 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @AynenMakino
      @AynenMakino 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@micindir4213 I'm guessing Ableton can do some of what I have in mind, but taking it out of the computer is also kind of part of the point. Not to mention that the modular setup makes it very easy to control on the fly. (and it probably looks better on a stage)

    • @micindir4213
      @micindir4213 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AynenMakino just know that you're going into FFT processing territory, which is CPU intensive and its better to design yourself an interface than to stick to whatever manufacturer has done. That is one part.
      Another thing that you might consider splitting the system into two parts -
      one is analog processor - VCA, drives, filters etc.
      another is digital sampler/FFT processor - delay, loop, harmonizer

    • @AynenMakino
      @AynenMakino 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@micindir4213 I'm looking into dividing the setup in smaller segments in order to expand slowly, as finding the funding to get it all in one go is less likely. So I may end up with a segmented setup anyway.
