When you raise the top and it's almost in place, I think you can hear a 'bump' at 18:56. That sound is likely from the plastic piece (that hides the top when down) that raises up behind the seats, hitting the bottom of the of the convertible top area by the rear window as they pass each other as the plastic cover is closing. That happens because of a couple of cloth like plastic straps under the top liner that stretch over time, causing the rear window section to be slightly lower - allowing it to bump into the other piece. People just punch a new hole in the strap maybe a 0.5" back (not positive about that distance) to remedy the problem. Hope that made sense! 2009 black C6 vert owner. Thanks for the video!
It’s the forward center edge of the deck lid hitting the inner/upper window trim as the folded top (rear window) is not pulled in sufficiently to clear ( like it was when new). My 2012 C6 manual top straps lasted only 2-1/2 years before stretching. I have been lightly pushing the window to clear when top dropping down and opening.

@@unlisted9494 Honda was known for weak transmissions in the early 2000s. My dad's Accord has nearly 300k miles on the original V6 and auto transmission. I used to own a fully loaded 2005 Corvette convertible with magnetic ride select and power top. Bought it used with 30k miles for 30k in 2010 drove it for 4 years and some 86 yo man t-boned it. It was totaled and insurance company wrote me a check more than what I paid for the car since it was appraised at 37k when I bought it :). You got a great deal make sure you use dealer spark plug cables after market cables arc off the engine and cause a service engine light error and a misfire code corvettes and even Pontiac's suffer from this defect and dealers don't want you to know about it so they can charge you for replacement coal packs and even fuel injectors
@@johnDingoFoxVelocity sorry but I don't believe this one bit, get a quality set of msd plug wires and they will guaranteed be better than stock plug wires. If they can handle a magnetos fire without arcing then it can handle a stock ls coil.
Sam.. WOW! Well done on the C6 purchase. I have an 11 Grand Sport Convertible. Make sure that you reset the AUTO DOWN on the windows. When you raise and lower the windows, HOLD the switch in the UP position for 3-4 seconds. And the same for the down position. When you open the door, the window should jump down about a 1/4" or so. Be careful if you hose down the engine. Dont soak the electrical connectors. There watertight SORT OF... They can get wet inside.

It was mentioned in the comments of his last video that the fuse for the exhaust control was probably removed, so the computer can't put it into the standard quiet mode.
Love the little reroute of the hood latches. Pre-fixed! You could tell the previous owner wasn't having it! Tiny things like this give a high mileage car that soul..
Congratulations on finding this good buy . The best part about it is having the knowledge / know how to repair / replace the faulty issues . Or ,having good friends to help you along the process of repair .
Bought my wife her dream car - a 2001 Black Corvette Convertible with less than 24,000 miles for les than $23,500. She loves it and drives it 27 miles to and from work every day.
Ha I was thinking the same thing, that's why when he points out the average cost is mid $20k an the average milage is under 50 well not too many cars that are almost 15 years old are considered average milage under 50k unless it a garage Queen
Doesn’t matter how many miles have the Corvette, besides the fact that “usually” owners maintain pretty well , is one of the very few decent American cars .
I agree if the owner is an adult and not a man child trying to impress his friends with his dad's Corvette doing burnouts and other childish behavior at every chance he gets.
For RESALE, NOTHING improves the value of the car more than Perfect Detailing!!!!!! Nobody pays big money for a shabby car, but a clean SHINY car that drives well & is ready to show your friends will have em showing you the CASH!!....... Too bad the e- speedo cant be " cleaned"....😇
I can't believe how excited I got watching this video! I was like yeah, yeah, YEAH! Don't flip this car. It's one of a million, where all the parts sync together in harmony and it was built on a happy day at the factory!
Wow... very cool! I purchased a Black C4 95 Vette with 87,000 miles and some change in April this year from an older gentleman from Abilene TX.... for under $10,000..the car has the Boze stereo with cassette and cd player factory and it still all works....
Great deal. I have a c5 z51 manual, usually have fords but the vette is very well designed easy to work on and goes like a cut cat. Did a clutch on mine , came apart pretty easy and went back together just as easily.
13:05 This happened to Cletus McFarland [SEE: “Ruby”, the auction Corvette], only it was the previous owner who blew up (and then replaced) the original engine. 😎
I have been a automotive restoration specialust for over 20 years, specializing in Paintless Dent Repair and paint correction. I work for a local car lot. I also do interior repair, headlamp repair and refinishing etc. I would give this one the business! I would buff out any scratches using disipative compound, and then polish it with Malco polishing creme...touch up chips, touch up scratches that are too deep to buff out, I use a headlamp repair system from Keystone, replacing the hard coat after proper prep...I would clean interior really well and use dye on the faded parts, also recently been learning how to repaint and repair the wheels...its going well, I use either a magnesium colored paint, or paint shaded "dull aluminum" on wheels .I sand and properly clean and mask wheels before repainting. Also not to rant but the one thing I do to almost every car, which produces stellar results, is using Showroom shine spray wax and a special microfiber towel with the synthetic clay on one side. It makes for a super smooth feel, and also its much easier to buff and remove the polish. Las but not least. I use a trim restore like Rustolem Trim Restore on all plastic trim like accents and cowl. Lastly I would black out the inner fenders with a semigloss black, then use a ceramic application on the finish and buff to a Masterpiece. It would take me about two days.
These seems like an exceptional deal, particularly given the way car prices have gone in the last two years. if the worst problems of an "as-is" car can be fixed for $500, you are laughing. I have had a 2008 C6 Coupe for the last six years. It is an excellent Grand Touring car and exceptionally reliable. There are enough Corvettes out there that most parts are available somewhere.
@@thecatfighter1 It seems very inconsistent, as it seems some cars get it with low mileage and others not at all. My car has around 65,000 miles and no sounds from the balancer. Advice I have read is to get an aftermarket balancer (ATI) and a pin kit to make sure it does not get loose again. I think Summit sells these. Good luck!
You gotta love it when all your issues seem like they’re going to be expensive, like cutting the hood off, convertible roof motors, and misfire on a 200,000+ mile engine. And in the end all it needs is a window actuator and a coil pack. This was a huge score.
none of those were as drastic as you say ...unless you're an idiot that doesn't know the 1st thing about these vettes , what moron would "cut the hood off" ??? come on , only a know nothin bone head . was obvious the roof motors were fine from the start and the misfire is just about always a coil
For those old regulators look up Power Window Repair in Phoenix. They replace the plastic parts with metal ones so no more crap breaking here or there. I replaced the one on my 03 Dakota on the drivers side multiple times and still had the same issues every 6 to 10 months where it would break. Put the rebuilt one in and it has been going strong for 2 years and counting. Well worth it instead of putting in more planned to break parts.
I have had a quarter million mile Corvette, they look really really goodafter a little elbow greeese you have acreal winner. Good you got it do cheap to, it takes a special person who can't afford one of these to even want it. Or buy it lol. Love it great job Sam.
Enjoying this video and looking forward to part 2. Thanks for the awesome content and a budget build. I think that you got a great deal on that car, even with those miles. The C6 Corvette seems to be the modern day equivalent of the Fox body Mustang as it's reliable, affordable and responds well to mods. I own a 2006 C6 with 22,900 miles which was purchased used in 2011.
I love deals like this! I found a 05 CLK 55 AMG convertible for $2k. Cleaned out a mouse nest repaired three chewed wires and the car worked perfectly!
A 773,000 mile C5 Corvette on original motor/no rebuilds was recently donated to the Corvette museum. And many other owners with hundreds of thousands of miles- remarkable for a sports car. These motors last literally forever.
The wife has one exactly like this but white and 6sp manual that’s been sitting unused in our garage for 2 years now. Since she’s gotten her SUV, she’s forgotten about it, lol. Good to see these cars are so robust! I need to get out there and get it started again and get fluids and tires changed and drive it!
IIRC, the coils are made by Denso. The LS2 coil is very reliable and offers a much hotter spark at high RPM over the LS1 coils. The engine looks cared for, but not detailed. I would do valve cover gaskets and seals. At this age, I would think all seals should be dealt with. This would make a great entry level starter Vette for anyone. With that said, leave the paint. This will allow the next owner to select the colour, if they don't want black.
whats really cool is that Sam shows that if you want a sports car its pretty much within reach of most people, especially if you are mechanically inclined....
These men make things seem so good!!! THEY ARE good spirited and one of my favorite vids I have watched in the past year or two...thanks guys!! Great attitude guys.. you make buying a car that may be trouble is a bit of fun & lucky!! Happy New Year!!
Why renew the seat cover and cut corners by leaving the broken seat cushioning / padding broken in place you can spot the iron support bar peaking well through the left bolster there where people meet the seat when they get in or out repairing is some time but under 50 to 100 you have that fixed also and it makes the seating much better and also the durability of your “new” seat cover last longer than a few thousand miles.
My 95 Camaro convertible has 333,000 miles. And for about $2k I replaced the steering rack, and front suspension and rear shocks, and tuneup. Just to get rearended by an uber. Totalled check was $7200, jacked the trunk out and bumper poped in place, still have rear fender wrinkles and pushed in top alignment to windshield latch. Startups like a shotgun going off, 3.4 six with no cat and turbo muffler. Only 27 years old runs like 115mph.
My 7 speed Corvette would regularly average 33-34mpg on long freeway trips. Best tank ever was 36.7mpg average with 544 miles on the tank. At the end of the day its still just a chevy pushrod v8, as long as the electronics hold up they will run forever. It legit had the best MPG out of the 9 cars in my fleet, it was even doing better than my Corolla.
200k+ driving it like a race car which they were made for. But with good service driven like a normal daily car LS motors can easily go 400k+ they are bullet proof. But who wants to drive it like that ;)
I nearly cried in exuberance. LOL Great find. Great channel too Sam. You are the reason that I watch Goonzquad, Sarah 'n' Tuned and Legit Street Cars. You never fail to entertain. Great deal
A blow torch will renew the front bumper and the headlights can be cleaned with baking soda and a half of a lemon. Use the lemon to scrub in the baking soda and wipe clean. Clears them instantly
I definitely wouldn't have been driving it without at least checking fluid levels first. You never know exactly what the history of the 250k is, no matter how well it might seem to have been taken care of.
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. I suppose it has full gauges, oil pressure and temp, so if the oil or coolant is really low you should get a warning before you damage the engine.
@@BryanTorok By not having himself filmed doing that. Any person with a lick of sense always check the fluids in used vehicles they're considering to buy.
@@billwilson3609 So, you are calling Sam a liar when he said in the video couldn't get the hood open at the lot? Or, maybe you didn't watch and understand the video. Or, maybe you are just a troll and I've wasted my time. Either way, I'm done.
Sometimes we fall into deals, and lots of dealers only buy red lane cars at auction. Mecum 2021, 2009 C6 w/26,000 miles would not start in the staging area, and nobody knew how to connect the jumper pack, no reserve. $8500 bought her, thank you.
We just got this exact Corvette at auction, same color, convertible, and we got it for making a race car. Ours did not come with an engine, but we got it for $5,800. Body is in almost perfect condition. Too bad we are tearing out all the interior. It had 26,000 miles on the 2006.
The previous owner clearly got their money's worth out of that well loved car and used it exactly for what it was built for. To be driven and enjoyed. That's awesome.
I think you stole well figuratively speaking, I mean it's an American iconic vehicle it'll always have value to the right person with the right budget. I have this exact car trim and Z51 package but in 6 speed manual and it's that 50k mileage version of which you spoke of. Took it out the other day after an 2 year hiatus and it drove like did in it's younger years like a dream, it's just a well designed model Corvette has done overall.
I would do business with you because: 1. you are honest and admit that some of the purchases you made were not good deals (compare that to the lack of disclosures of losses incurred by hawkers of crypto coins, flipping houses, day trading, hedge funds, options sellers). 2. you explained the skill level needed to get to a good result when an as-is car is purchased. I like Mr. Howard Hughes' approach to cars. In the 1950s, he provided his executives with used, functional, reliable Chevrolet sedans.
Yes, great deal Sam. Kind of disappointed though, you didn't have to tear out the transmission or anything. Is it really a project car if you were able to drive it home?
My experience? If a car sits, like through a virus shutdown, the injectors get gummed up and P0300 pops up. Mechanics will throw parts at it when all it needs is injector cleaner.
Im driving a 220K miles 12 prius V that has a 17 engine. The guy who did the swap used it as his daily until he sold it. Gas prices were low then so buyers were not interested in a hybrid. Got it for $6K ,5 trim level ,leather and heated seats. Entune rear camera new AC. Has a cracked windshield and it doesn't bother me one bit. Put hot glue along the crack so the sun doesn't blind me. Very affordable fix. My motto is never let perfection get in the way of good enough. Got "shitbox edition" badge for it indicating I get vehicles to use them ,not for them to own me.
That is a beautiful Corvette! It speaks very highly of what GM can do when they want to. Decoding RPO codes is the best way, but another way to get if the car is a base or Z51 is the presence of drilled/slotted rotors. Base cars had solid discs, if I'm not mistaken. This is not fool-proof though as someone could have replaced the OE solid rotors with drilled/slotted ones.
In 2017 around thanksgiving I purchased 2001 corvette 6 speed targa top with 247,000 miles for 7k and people thought I was crazy, daily drove it for 9 months and did some cosmetic improvements then sold it for 10,500 to the first person to look at it, I’ve never seen one that inexpensive since.
though a bit tedious to pull engines from newer corvettes, they're still comparatively cheap to overhaul/rebuild; a good block dressing, honing, bearings, head studs, valve cleaning, new cams, rings etc. and it would run as good as or better than new...
$8k? Great deal Sam! Now I think, if you were the only bid, might you have got it for $5k? Lol! Alex is a genius with hood pressure points. I would try to fix the cables properly & knowing me, keep the emergency under wheel well emergency cables to boot. Seat fix, window regulator and steering wheel for $500 well worth it too. Great budget build so far.
I think this is a great deal. I would be happy to take it off your hands. I think running a compression test on the engine will answer the major questions regarding mechanical condition, assuming no accidents historically.
Personally, I would never and do never ceramic coat- I use Si02. It looks amazing, protects very well and it lasts. If needed, unlike ceramic, it can easily be removed with cutting polish.
I've purchased a few vehicles now from Auction. One being a high mileage 2003 Sierra. Got it for 2300 bucks, did some work to the body and sold it for 8800 grand.
Great video Sam!! ✌️✌️ That Corvette is very nice and the fact it has 250k miles (400k kilometers! Wow!) is awesome! LS are strong and durable engines! P.S: Hoping one day to see an Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio on the channel 🍀❤️
Have you actually looked underneath it? I was looking at a 2004 Mustang GT, and it looked great in and out. It also seemed to run fine. But when I crawled under it, I found the whole undercarriage was mangled. Dents and gouges everywhere, the pinch welds and frame rails were smashed.
If I had your money and your knowledge I'd just be buying and refurbishing Corvettes all year. This car still looks great and I felt joy as you were discovering how good of a condition this car is and how cheap it was. Awesome! I'm so happy for you! I know I'll never have a Corvette on my own, I think it wouldn't be a good idea to get one in my country, so I'm living my Corvette Dream through you :D By the way, Sage is a cool guy, I like him!
It's so nice what you said about the original owner/mechanic or a son did the cable hood latch solution. Not to say hack but pretty ingenious to run the cables to fender wells. Awesome gained a subscriber.
Out of curiosity, are these auctions only for 'dealer licensed'? I had one for 30 years in Texas as a way of buying mainly older cars muscle cars and European exotics cheap. I had a shop in a office warehouse of about 1,500 sq' for everyone to hang-out. I also had a nice old Jerr-dan Rollback. I only had one old car lift but it was a Godsend. My reason for this shop was a get together spot mainly for Viet Vets such as myself. Pre Iraq, etc. The rollback was great except of constantly being asked to get buddies breakdowns, etc. I know have a huge old 6+ car barn (cement floor and climate controlled for working on my projects. Still have the lift but no rollback. Just a flatbed dovetailed trailer. Now that I'm a in my 70's I'm considering starting to unload a lot of my stuff. I have a '67 427 Vette that I bought in '72 from a old gentlemen who lost his son during the Tet offensive in '68. I had only 2700 miles on it at the time. I recently sold a '56 Mercedes Benz 220S Cabriolet I bought in '73 for only $1,250 (down to with 5 sports cars). I hardly drove it and I saw what they were selling for. It had a beautiful rich blue finish a luxurious interior with only 12,000 miles. A MB dealer in Florida bought it for his showroom. Wow, I didn't think at 1 AM+ I'd get so sidetracked talking shop. Thx, for your video!
Sometimes the really high mileage cars are well taken care of especially if it's a 1 owner. I've had very good luck buying them. And getting years of use out them
It would be interesting to find the history and carfax on this. Clearly, it was well loved by someone in the past given the condition it's in. I'm guessing the hood latch and other items were ignored by a previous owner who didn't have the money or know-how to properly make the repairs.
Just sold my 07 C6 Z51, to take advantage of the market. Drove it almost daily except for a couple months over winter for 3 years 100% trouble free other than regular maintenance and sold it for several thousand more than I paid. Due to a surgery coming up I wont be in condition to want to fall in and climb out of it, so I'm hoping the market comes back to earth and I can take my C6 Z51 profits and a bit extra I've saved and get a Grand Sport model 😁 I'll enjoy watching this build. You are right though. They run quite. Sounds like a Honda accord. Which I liked. Though I wouldnt have minded the mild to wild option having to pick one I'd choose quite. Wondering if the HUD is dead or just dimmed all the way.
Score! As more people discover the performance of EVs, these old ICE hot rods will be all over the used car market. Might even be a buyers market once Tesla gets its fab plant churning out the chips it and other manufacturers need. Time and patience benefits us all.
Lol, no. The charging network wont be there for anyone who isnt a homeowner. People in urban areas in apts and condos, thats over half the working age population, will be SOL and will be fighting for the existing ICE inventory after 2035. Elitist democrats dont care because the real goal isnt to get us into EVs, its taking away POVs and forcing us into mass transit. The first clue is how most cities are doing infill, which requires more parking, but taking away parking spots for bike lanes.
The fenders aren't "glued" on. I've rebuilt 8 totaled Corvettes. I can remove a front fender in 20 minutes. The only thing that IS glued on are the non-convertible roofs. I've removed those too. BTW, there's a Corvette in the Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, KY with over 750,000 miles on it that's never had a major repair. It's a 1999, same year as my present ride. Last week my next door neighbor followed me onto the freeway with his Tesla and egged me into a race. We went hammer down from 50 MPH to 100. I beat him .... by about 30'. He was shocked and it made my day. At 100 we were coming up on traffic just as my RPM limiter kicked in at 6,000 RPM in third gear.
That hugely depends on what car you are talking about, how old the car is and how much you paid for it. All of the cars I own have actually appreciated in value over the last few years because I bought them ultra cheap for a couple hundred euros per car while there where still plenty of them for sale and they are now starting to considerably go up in value since they are all older then 30 years by now and people are actually starting to search for them because there aren't many left and most that nowadays come up for sale are total basket cases due to rust and neglect. Cars like my 1990 Mitsu Colt C50, 89 Lancer C12 and even my 91 1G Eclipse (completely unmolested and in prime condition, even though it has around 200k miles on the clock).
I'd love to have a free and clear Corvette with no payments, that is actually running. I'd invest in it over time and bring it to mint condition, even swapping the engine as soon as I could. It would be so worth the effort!
Not a Vette fan myself, but I do appreciate them. Got to go to the Corvette plant in STL when I was in grade school back in the 70's, pretty cool watching them get assembled. I think you got yourself a decent buy especially considering the mileage. I probably wouldn't pay what you'll be asking knowing what you spent, a getting it together, and the mileage, but I wish you all the best. 😁 If I were to buy a Vette, I'd want a C3 68 to 72, and if I REALLY had the BIG $$$ I'd want a 63. 😁

Sam..
I was the Convertible Top Engineer on that Top stack! The rip in the Upper “B” Pillar area was a huge issue between GM and CTS the company I worked for and the Supplier of the Convertible Top. Dave Hill was Never happy with that Corner!! 😎

It was mentioned in the comments of his last video that the fuse for the exhaust control was probably removed, so the computer can't put it into the standard quiet mode.
Everyone needs a friend like Alex. Killed me with the Pressure points.
Amazing to see a Corvette, especially a convertible, with high miles. Most are boomer garage queens, driven sparingly, buffed weekly.
Bought my wife her dream car - a 2001 Black Corvette Convertible with less than 24,000 miles for les than $23,500. She loves it and drives it 27 miles to and from work every day.
I put 30k mile on my c7 in the past 2 years
And that’s where we private market buyers come in hehehe
More Boomer cracks. Typical
Yes and still a Chevy when it comes to things such as the motor. Much cheaper to repair than a foreign exotic.
My 89 has 272,000 miles on it and still strong. My 71 wasn't built as well as the Bowling Green cars. Still enjoy them both though.
I agree if the owner is an adult and not a man child trying to impress his friends with his dad's Corvette doing burnouts and other childish behavior at every chance he gets.
Seems like this is going to be one of the very rare ones that you completelly finish, maybe a complete inside and out detailing to top it out?

What a deal, runs good, drives good, you fixed all the small problems. For the price tag you can drive it anywhere and not worry about the paint.

A 773,000 mile C5 Corvette on original motor/no rebuilds was recently donated to the Corvette museum. And many other owners with hundreds of thousands of miles- remarkable for a sports car. These motors last literally forever.
The head gasket for that car lasted until 750k miles, amazing engine design. The guy lived near my city of Jacksonville FL ha.

theres more to a car than its engine.
@@ScreamingEagleFTW Yes, and the rest of it is reliable too.

Startups like a shotgun going off, 3.4 six with no cat and turbo muffler. Only 27 years old runs like 115mph.
The mechanicals of the Corvette are easily good for 200K+ miles. Most just don't get that high because they're not driven every day.
They actually get decent mpg as well especially on the interstate with that 6 speed.
Vettes are built to be driven, and driven hard. They really live up to their reputation and prestige.

I definitely wouldn't have been driving it without at least checking fluid levels first. You never know exactly what the history of the 250k is, no matter how well it might seem to have been taken care of.

Thank you. I've learned so many things I didn't know about a car I've owned for years.
My experience? If a car sits, like through a virus shutdown, the injectors get gummed up and P0300 pops up. Mechanics will throw parts at it when all it needs is injector cleaner.

Amazing deal, congrats! It almost balances out all the bad auction purchases :D
though a bit tedious to pull engines from newer corvettes, they're still comparatively cheap to overhaul/rebuild; a good block dressing, honing, bearings, head studs, valve cleaning, new cams, rings etc. and it would run as good as or better than new...

It would be interesting to find the history and carfax on this. Clearly, it was well loved by someone in the past given the condition it's in. I'm guessing the hood latch and other items were ignored by a previous owner who didn't have the money or know-how to properly make the repairs.

I will guarantee you that used cars will loss there value.
