      Hi Anna. Ideally, you would reach a point of data saturation (when additional data yields nothing new), but that can often only be determined by the researcher and will vary according to the research project. If you're working on a thesis, it should be pretty substantial. What are you working on?

    Hello, I hope you're doing well. I was wondering if you would be willing to give me a piece of advice on selection of the appropriate analytical approach for my MA thesis. When I read about these approaches they all seemed similar to me. I want to research negative attitudes shown through language usage towards Eliza Doolittle in G. B. Shaw's "Pygmalion". Would Discourse Analysis be the proper one to use in order to approach this topic?
    Looking forward to your reply.

    • @evanashworth490
      @evanashworth490  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello! If you're interested in researching the attitudes that characters in "Pygmalion" have towards Eliza Doolittle, I might suggest using narrative analysis or textual analysis, since you would be focusing on perceptions (as expressed through language) within the story itself. If, however, you wanted to examine people (that is, real people's) perceptions of Eliza Doolittle, then discourse analysis could be useful. I hope that helps!

    hello! this is very informative! I would like to ask if what analysis best fits an analysis of politician's social media posts?

    • @evanashworth490
      @evanashworth490  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks much! I think Discourse Analysis would be the most appropriate (especially if you intend to analyze not just the posts themselves, but how the politician responds to/engages with others who respond to their posts and how the politician tries to "make meaning" and engage with their constituents more generally). However, if you want to analyze the politician's language at a more "nuts and bolts" level (e.g., what patterns they use in their posts, such as certain words, punctuation, or emojis), you could possibly use conversation analysis. I hope that helps!

  • @andrastanciu124

    hey! good video. hope u will see this. I'm trying to conduct a research with the political discourse sphere in UK and my methodology is the cultural dimensions of hofstede. The thing is, i have to look for ways to see how these dimensions are expressed in their speeches. Do u have an idea?

    • @evanashworth490
      @evanashworth490  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello! Even though it's been a while since I read some Hofstede, consider the following. Hofstede developed the "Cultural Dimensions Theory", which involves a series of aspects in which cultural differences could be explored. For example, one of these aspects is "masculinity vs. femininity", so one could use discourse analysis of conversation in a speech community to understand how notions of gender are valued in the cultures of those speech communities. I hope that helps!

    • @evanashworth490
      @evanashworth490  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello! Critical discourse analysis is not so different from discourse analysis in terms of methods (e.g., examining the use of language in speech or texts, thematic analysis), but the goals are different--the former seeks to understand how language reinforces asymmetrical power relationships) while the latter focuses on how speakers use language to co-construct meaning).

    • @evanashworth490
      @evanashworth490  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Technically, they are different subdisciplines of linguistics. Pragmatics involves the study of meaning in context (e.g., how speakers understand sarcasm), while discourse analysis involves investigating how speakers work together to make meaning in conversation. I would further argue that students should learn pragmatics before they take on discourse analysis, as an understanding of the later requires an understanding of the former. Another thing to consider is that discourse analysis is something you can "do" or "perform" by analyzing extended stretches of written, signed, or spoken language, but you can't really "do" pragmatics. I hope that helps!

      Hello! Very generally, pragmatics involves the study of meaning in context (e.g., how do we know when someone is being sarcastic?), so it is a subdiscipline of linguistics. Is meaning synonymous with notions of identity? If yes, are they equivalent?

    • @evanashworth490
      @evanashworth490  ปีที่แล้ว

      I suppose it depends who you talk to. A semantician is concerned with "meaning" insofar as denotational meaning is concerned (e.g., is a "beanbag" a chair?), but a discourse analyst might say that when friends engage in conversation, their use of slang terms reinforces group membership, so in that sense "meaning" and "identity" certainly overlap. I would not say that "meaning" and "identity" are equivalent, though. I think of it this way: "Meanings" (from what a word means to what our place in a social group means) add onto and interact with other meanings to form identity.

      @evanashworth490  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Abbas. I'm not entirely clear on what you mean by "sentence linguistics", but I assume you are getting at the idea that most of linguistics has been concerned with what is going on at the level of the sentence or lower (phrases, words, morpheme, sounds). If so, this is not the domain of discourse analysis, which is concerned with the study of extended stretches of naturally occurring language.

      Hi Pratik. I'm not sure if I understand your question, but discourse analysis is, generally, the study of language in extended stretches of language (that is, the study of language beyond the sentence). However, "summary", at least to me, merely represents an overview of an idea.

      Hello. Pragmatics involves the study of meaning in context, while discourse analysis involves the study of extended stretches of language (beyond the sentence). Although the concepts often interrelate with one another, pragmatics can involve discussions about single words (and their meanings in certain contexts), but discourse analysis doesn't really study anything smaller than the sentence.

      Hello! Yes, registers are entirely context-dependent because speakers have different registers for different situations. For example, you have a register for ordering a meal at a restaurant, which is different from the register you might use when talking to an instructor at school.

    In what way does discourse analysis overlap with stylistics?

      Well, very generally, I would say that if we consider stylistics a matter of varieties of language used depending upon social context, we could say that discourse analysis could be performed on any "style".
