    Absolutely fantastic explanation of the model! I did a CDA for my highschool project about how swedish media talks about Eu-migrants and it was so interesting! An amazing tool that will definitely always be useful even in everyday life

      That’s precisely what CDA aims to raise awareness of: the professors are gatekeeping their disciples in thus attempt of controlling the manner in which the information is presented. It’s all part of maintaining the system.

  • @andthatsshannii
    @andthatsshannii ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thanks for this! There is one thing I've been struggling with for a while but I can't seem to get a straight answer from any of the literature I've read. Fairclough uses the term "discursive event" from time to time to refer to these things in tandem. With a written text, a discursive event cannot be complete until a reader has read the text. So does that mean that every reader of a written text creates their own discourse event? That would be interesting, because different readers have different purposes for accessing a text.

    • @flixabout
      @flixabout  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @andthatsshannii. Thank you for your interest. You're right. All readers create their own perception of a text or image. When you see a picture of a lion, some people see a beautiful animal, others see a threat. The same happens when you read a text. The term "a storm" conjures up different associations depending on who you are and where you come from. Every reader creates their own discourse event. This makes it difficult to convey a message that is perceived in the same way by everyone. Hope you tell others about our channel and subscribe.

    The issue I face in trying to learn more about CDA is no one seems to lay out the steps for the critical analysis. This video simply chooses words to create meanings out of but the meaning may be in the choosing. I am looking to carry out a CDA soon but am struggling to find reading that doesn't find it's own ontology in the data, that is, that doesn't impose "power" or "patriarchy" by choosing those themes from a string of text.

    Deep thanks for explaining, yet the 1st and 3rd dimension seems a bit unclear, and the way I see it is that both seem to share similarities
    Mind if I ask what the key difference between the two?

    • @flixabout
      @flixabout  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Tom Jason. You're right. I believe that it is an interaction between the two levels that creates the change in both social context and language - they go hand in hand. The difference is that level 1 is at the micro-level - you can read a text or watch a news broadcast about a subject. Level 3 is at the macro level - these are universally valid considerations that everyone agrees on. What comes first can be challenging to see - is it the language that influences the social context, or is it the social context that influences the language. Is it the publicity about CO2 that creates the social context about the environment, or is it the social context that makes the language around CO2?. I hope the answer is helpful.

    • @TomJason25
      @TomJason25 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@flixabout Closing in towards the idea -- many thanks -- but may I clarify, the 1st level only indicates the text's interpretation, while the 3rd level indicates the implications on a text's discourse in a particular phenomenon in a particular context?

    • @flixabout
      @flixabout  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Tom Jason You are totally right - the 3rd level is the whole picture - the 1st level is a fragment of the picture. You have to stand back and see the text in the context it's written.

    Do you recommend to take this as a guide to apply the model of Fairclough to any type of text we want to analise? Me for example, I'm doing a thesis about the discurse of a teen magazind that talks mostly about local bands and music. Do you think this model can be used in this case?

    • @flixabout
      @flixabout  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not quite sure about the context you work in. But I do not always want to use the model. It depends on what I want to analyze. If I want to see how different people or groups are set up against each other in the text - as the good or the less good, respectively, then I will use the model. Hope the answer made sense to you.

      References on CDA. Read Norman Fairclough's books about the subject. They are excellent. Norman Fairclough (born 1941) is an emeritus Professor of Linguistics at Lancaster University in England.

The theory is an ongoing process that does not have a direct source. But one of the main works is the book Fairclough, Norman (1995). Critical Discourse Analysis. Boston: Addison Wesley.

      It is the same except that Fairclough has included the social dimension and this is not the case in the other theories of discourse analysis.

    hei can i ask how CDA will help you to analyse any topics?

    • @flixabout
      @flixabout  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It can help you see what the mediator's view is on the subject and how the mediator wants you to see the subject. The use of different words about the topic - sends a different perception. The same man can be described as middle-aged, handsome, or clever. It makes a difference in how you perceive the man in question. Hope this short feedback makes sense.

      There is no direct text. It is our interpretation of the model. But we try to stay as close as possible to the author's original text. It is our plan to place transcriptions for all of the films on our app in the near future.
