  • In April 2015 fifty people from all over the world join Peter Rollins in the cultural heart of Belfast for four days full of talks, music, art, drinking, conversation and conspiring. This is a short talk from one of the afternoon sessions in which John Caputo reflects on Radical Theology and asks the question, "can it preach?"
    This boutique festival is curated by Peter Rollins and runs every year.

    Cannot but think of this verse by Leonard Cohen:
    'There is no God in Heaven
    And there is no Hell below
    So says the great professor
    Of all there is to know
    But I've had the invitation
    That a sinner can't refuse
    And it's almost like salvation
    It's almost like the blues'
    - seems like something Caputo could've written right?

    The problem here is that this text is deeply misinterpreted. Matthew (or whoever wrote this text) is addressing the hypocrites in the Ekklesia just like James did. Pastorally if preachers used this language (in the right context) it evokes a response, either transformation or indifference, people will have to make a decision and their deeds are revealed to them! The problem is preachers don't use this language in the right context so that they can "retain" the rich and the powerful.

    To invert a line from a Harlan Ellison story, "I am a limited being in an unlimited world."

    This kind of mysticism lets God off to easily. 'Oh sinner that I am how can I respond to the unconditional'. But this to me is a way of apologizing for god not having to do better in making the unconditional something "sinners" can respond to. God is left with no way of claiming any moral goodness; even a "weak" god" has to be good or it leaves sinners in despair. (This would not be nice). One demands of god!!! that he respond to our prayers. Caputo's god doesn't have to respond, and Caputo lets him/her remain in his silence without a prayer.

      You've completely misunderstood then, the whole tract of what he trying to say. He explicitly says to 'think' religiously, is precisely to release oneself of the 'divine economics'. That is what Eckhart called Gelassenheit.

      @@oceanmachine1906 I wouldn't use those exact terms, but something like that seems an apt metaphor. Prayers as deposits into or purchase of shares in the cosmic Bank. One is only to receive full value after death. However, there seems to be no reason why one can't receive the "interest" on investment while alive. In Christianity, I take this to be the work of the Holy spirit. The Father creates heaven and earth; the Son conquers death; that leaves the work of the Holy Spirit as the free floating interest in love/peace/joy making itself known in life on earth.

      The logic of exchange is _not_ a logic of love. Love is an embrace of lack, it is something kenotic, a generative loss for the sake of the other-not an investment in a savings plan for some transcendent payoff.
      The payoff in love is not some _thing_ but an expansiveness brought about through _becoming_ something other. In love I surrender myself to the process of creative destruction, in exchange I seek to preserve/fortify my wholeness. God, through the incarnation and the event of the cross _emptied out his cosmic bank account,_ the kenosis of Christ is how we get the explosion of the Holy Spirit-this community of believers bound by love in the here and now, given back to themselves, a revelation of radical freedom. The miracle to me is the beauty of finitude, our ability to be present to love here in the kingdom.

    LOL, replacing one dogma with another. "Only way to preach".... um what. Why don't people use Humility in spreading their version of the "Good News" instead of self righteous diatribes.

    Since the Lord Jesus spoke these words, those who believe on Him know that they do to Him what they do to their neighbor, and that that will be the standard for their personal judgement. That there will be those who express surprise at their judgement suggests that those are persons who were not consciously following Jesus' teachings. Mr Caputo is showing a misunderstanding of the teaching of Jesus on everlasting punishment. The whole point is that those who do nothing for love of neighbor in this life are unfit for admission to the heavenly reward. He seems also to be unaware of the mitigation of eternal punishment, and that it is not unremitting torture ( a distortion of the biblical teaching). It should be noted that feeding the hungry and giving drink to the thirsty includes giving spiritual encouragement to others, as man shall not live by bread alone. Mr Caputo shows a prejudice against the Church and its sacraments as established by Christ, and against the gospel of Matthew as a faithful record of Jesus' words.

    This is just humanism dressed up in religious language.

    • @kikozito
      @kikozito 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +Andy McKinney How can this be humanism when Caputo affirms an unconditional being beyond his own being? I might be wrong here, but is it not the whole point of his speech to affirm something beyond the human capacities (writing, reading, talking)? And if this is indeed the case, doesn't the affirmation of something that is beyond the human undermines the same humanism you argue he advocates here?

    • @AndalusianIrish
      @AndalusianIrish 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      If you read Caputo's book Truth he says that the Bible is only true on the same level as a novel and that prayer and religion are only placebos. God or Jesus are not events. Orthodox Christian teaching is the hypostatic union of Christ. Caputo also tears the Gospel of Matthew to shreds in another video on TH-cam.

    • @kikozito
      @kikozito 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Andy McKinney Thank you for your reply. However, I still don't see why you call his thinking 'humanist'. Could please enlighten me in what for you are the humanist chracteristics of his thinking? I still don't see how someone who affirms a being beyonf his own being be called an humanist, but that might change once I read your answer.

    • @AndalusianIrish
      @AndalusianIrish 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +kikozito As I understand it he does not posit God as a sentient being with volition but God seems to be just another word for coincidence. I refer you back to his book Truth where he says Karl Marx, an atheist was a good Jew because of his concern for social justice. That is humanistic because it is saying it doesn't matter if God exists or not as long as you are a good person. 1 Cor 15 Paul says that Christianity rises and falls on the historicity of Jesus and Him rising from the dead.

      It's more like deconstruction dressed up in religious language. I haven't known Caputo to call himself a humanist. In fact, I could imagine him turning your comment on its head, saying, "Humanism is just religion dressed down." Seeing as how at the end of the day he tends to sympathize most with Paul Tillich, one can assume that he is okay with religion so long as it's the deconstructible sort.
