Tommy was my Guitar Teacher at GIT.
It was an honour then...but even moreso now in hindsight.
    A true honor.
Walking down the corridor with him after class before I got ny Lunch and talking was my fondest memory of him.

*More or less, if you can get into a position to be offered the work, know enough to improvise any genre of music, don't worry about recycling pieces and ideas you have already used, and don't expect that they expect you to rewrite the book you've never even read, especially when they don't even know the name of it.*
He's saying you need just enough talent and knowledge in music theory to improvise and give the client something they believe is exactly what they asked for. They won't know any better if it fits the loose mold. *It's a bit funny, but in fact very useful advice.*
15 minutes of homework the night before, and you can produce the style of sound they're requesting, even if it's well outside how that genre is generally composed. *I've heard this man's name many times in my life and seen him around in my 45 years, but his candid view on what it's really about is still fresh, even though he's deceased.*
This is why we used to create artistic legends.

how a big budget Hollywood film about this guy's life has not been made is beyond me. The story of Tommy Tedesco is screaming for it.

That's a great idea unfortunately Hollywood would have a very attractive actor play the part and simply dub over the guitar. Just for that reason I wouldn't want to watch it. I would rather see a bad ugly actor who has the fantastic ability to copy Tommy.

@ 17:30 In Tommy’s story he starts playing “ Ain’t Misbehavin” at a Classical guitar society in France. Classic! I bet the students were incredulous. Many of them were into propriety but Tommy steam rolls it with playing a classical guitar with a pick. Awesome sense of humor. Tommy was polished. Have any other great videos of Tedesco like this to share? Thanks again!

Tommy was much more than a brilliant guitar player. I saw him do a GIT seminar in Los Angeles and he was a superb raconteur, charismatic, encouraging, humble and self deprecating (with the caveat that most of those humble anecdotes involved his interactions with superstars 😂).
His ‘fake it til you make it’ attitude belied that fact that he really was the quintessential session music or side man. His seminar left a lasting impression

Was a really good time listening to this man play. he told really good stories and was an incredible person to watch play. without a question of a doubt, one of the greatest highlights of my life meeting this man. so down to earth. back then I had no idea all the work he had done. I had just started playing the guitar 3 years prior to meeting him but will never forget the lasting impression he made on me at the age of 21. R.I.P tommy

A great, funny guy...and a great player. If I could take lessons from him, I would. Which is why I'm glad this video exists. He jokes and downplays his abilities, but it's obvious that he has deep, deep talent.

@@KingJorman I went for the very first semester, which I guess, was 1977. To be honest, I forgot what year it was, it is so long ago now. I found the date on the MI website. They were so new, when I went there, that there was no printed material prepared when classes started. The were literally making fresh copies of the curriculum, straight out of the hands of Howard Roberts, and running into the classrooms with handfuls of paper. Paper, that had just come off of the Copy Machine. No printers back then, unless you worked in a print shop!
They have a lot of pictures on the MI site. I remember seeing quite a few of these instructors, when I was in LA. Tommy Tedesco, Don Mock (who bought my Coral Electric Sitar,) Ron Eschete, Joe Diorio. And there was Pat Hicks, who ran the place. Pat was a super nice guy.
Unfortunately, my dreams exceeded my wallet, and I was barely able to complete that first semester. Three months and done, and on a bus back to the outskirts of Pittsburgh. Dreams can take you places, but they don't necessarily KEEP you there...
I hope that your experience at GIT was better than mine. It was a cool place.

It's one thing to be a great professional guitar player, but it's another thing to be one of the greatest "studio" musicians of all time. Tommy almost downplays his guitar musicianship, but a lot of us know better. He is flat out one of the greatest guitar players who ever held a guitar in their arms. Some people will hate me for saying this, but he had the "speed" in his fingers just as much as Django did and YES, I love Django. Tommy not only could play lightening fast lines/licks, but he also played them --- "clean." A lot of guitar players can play fast, but their lines aren't always clean. Tommy was always - fast, crisp and clean. Thank you Francesco Bordino for sharing this video with us. I love it !!!

What a rock star and musical chameleon??? One of the things I really like about Tomy Tedesko is the same thing I love about Carol Kaye , ( my bass idol), They had no choice but to make it happen. Families to support, etc. The best thing is how they had a real electricity not only between them but one they spread to the world. I might add, California was the place to be and the musical era were the perfect environment. Tommy T never changed instruments half the time in the studio, the recording engineers thought he was changing from uke to guitar, or to electric guitar. He was sitting behind a sound proofing wall that just exposed him from shoulders up..LOL. It was his act that made it happen. Talk about mastering your environment and being in control???

I was admitting to it. But you seem to lack a sense of humor about it or just dense. You also seemed to have missed the point altogether. Seriously, as in, not too technical or academic or stiff about it. He's loose, he's painting music like he's having fun with it. You idiot.

Well it's probably because it was pulled from a VHS tape first, then the converted. I had a few of these Starlicks VHS's back in the day...I'm that old :-)

One of my favourite TH-cam guitar videos is the rare LP "The Guitars Of Tom Tedesco" recorded in 1965. Check it out if you haven't heard it because it's fantastic. .th-cam.com/video/CVnvfsn1GAI/w-d-xo.html This is a great example of Tommy's masterful technique and tone, no matter what stye he was playing in. He was truly one of the ultimate great guitarists.
