Me too! That is pretty much my response to alcohol - I just do not like it! (And bizarrely, the only time I ever sampled mulled wine - less than half a glass - I ended up with a migraine. Put me right off the stuff, and yet I love the smell!)
If you want a non-alcoholic version use 2 parts of Blackcurrant juice and 1 part of grape juice instead of the wine. Maybe Bernadette would like that more. This was a lovely video. Happy new decade and may you (all) prosper!

Have you tried him on low tannin reds? I'm guessing from the coffee his dislike is from the bitterness. Also worth trying the wine with something with fats in it - like cheese or maybe a chocolate with milk in or something like that as fats react with tannins and remove their bitterness. So a milky coffee would probably be better for him than black coffee too. I can't drink anything bitter so coffee is vile to me. But a good coffee cake or tiramisu (both which have the necessary fat contents) is quite delicious!

Not quite as long as TH-cam :) We met at TORM in Autumn 2010 when you successfully sold me a membership to a web based magazine that sounded quite interesting...
Ah that last bit was beautiful. 1820s, obviously. I have told my friends that it’s the 1820s we’re going for, so it was nice to have someone else say it:)
I just want to tell you a heart felt thank you Cathy. Your motivation for introverts video made me really think about what I wanted out of my life and I applied your advice to a job advert I was interested in, but didn’t have the confidence to apply for. I got the job and was then rehired in the new year. I know know how to navigate my city and I’m really enjoying the work I do. If you didn’t post the video I wouldn’t have gotten the courage I think. Thank you so much!
By the way, the job that I applied for was as a temp position in a library. Now, not only am I enjoying my new job, but I’m also working my way towards a masters degree to work as a librarian.
That was thoroughly enjoyable, but I could hear my dad's voice chastising that you should always use the flat of the blade to scrape food off of the cutting board otherwise you will dull your cooking blade. And I'm totally with Bernadette, alcohol is nasty.
I'm with Bernadette on the 'disgusting' front haha, but I'm happy to see that Morgan's hard work was not lost after all, and that you enjoyed it! BTW those buttons you sent your santee look gorgeous
What fun being surrounded by friends drinking mulled wine. I love the packaging, and the "how to" and where Morgan Donner got the labels on her video was cool. Seeing you open them, lol, priceless, cutting around the seals firstly trying to pull them apart. Victim number one, poor Bernadette Banner not knowing what she is in for, and the reaction. ROFL. Victim number two , Constance....mmmm Like night and day ROFL. Great fun. Happy late Robbie Burns Day!!!
Looks like a great evening with good friends :) I would love to see some more vlog-style videos like this (along with the regularly scheduled programming, of course)
you all seem so wonderful to spend time with omg what a joy of a little video. Though, a red wine as your first alcoholic drink was very bold on Bernadette's part!
i like the fact that morgan donner calls her channel the "morgan donner party" it always makes me chuckle. goodness i need people like you guys in my rl.
dc in rb what a great idea! I’m just getting interested in home dying and back into patchwork again - I’ve had one on the go for 34 years. Long enough for it to have gone out and come back into, fashion again. I’m planning on finishing it this year - honest 😂🤣🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🇬🇧✌🏻🌹
That was brilliant Bernadette reaction took me right back to our wedding. My husband came from Orkney where they have a custom called "the cog" a wooden vessel made of staves shaped like a bucket with two extended staves which are used as handles to pass the cog from person to person. The cog is filled with warmed ale and a variety of alcohol, did I say his ancestors were vikings 😊. Now the cog is an accepted part of an orkney wedding, but we got married in Glasgow and the whole thing had to be explained. Any way the first round of the hall the non orcadians like ms Banner took a delicate sip a d pulled a disgusted face. However after several rounds of the hall and quite a few refills the faces had all taken on a happy if somewhat bemused expression as they quaffed the offering with all the elegance of an Orkney farmer at the County show.
"I would be the math genius, but these are all imperial measures. And we're in Europe*", Cathy Hay. Such a good and perfectly deserved burn, I love it. (*"which, in case you heathen don't know, we use the metric measures that make so much more sense and don't give you a bad headache every time you try to convert something", is what I hear)
The mulling spices may work better for Bernadette in some apple cider or juice . Hearing you all talking together throughout this video was so very lovely the joy and comradery was wonderful .. thank you for sharing this with us it was such a treat
I make mulled cider for my girls as an after sledding treat, while parents get Gluhwein. :) No need to add sugar! Just let the mulling spices hang out with the cider as it warms. Bonus points if you put a clementine peel in with it.
If you decide to try the potion, might I suggest a very sweet thing called Mogen David? It's generally sold for Passover, but since it was developed in the late 1800s, it is highly sweetened. A poor substitute for the "great wines", but it IS alcoholic and IS a wine. It comes in peach, blackberry, and concord grape. Readily available at most outlets in the US, it is also very inexpensive so you won't feel bad about pouring it out if you truly hate it.
I wanted to see this video since I saw Morgan Donner make the item. This has become another favorite video of mine, I was laughing and in a fit of giggles at how cute it was, even more so that Bernadette actually tried wine. It reminded me of the time when I drank wine for the first time and had a similar reaction.
I bet a lot of people in the costube community, especially on the historical side wanted either you or Bernadette as there a recipient I know I definitely would’ve!!! However, the pressure would totally be on to get either of you the perfect gift wrapped in the perfect way with the perfect message sent along with the perfect package!!!
Watching you with Bernadette and your friends is like taking a step back in time. My DREAM is to visit England at least once in my lifetime. I will definitely make it happen. But until I can I will watch your videos and admire all that you do. ❤
Tramlines in wine are an indicator of the alcohol content. So too many means the wine hasn't aged enough. It's akin to looking at a glass of spirit (rum, whisky, vodka) and seeing how far the ring from the top of the spirit crawls up the inside of the glass (more alcohol content, the higher the climbing ring).
Constance needs her own costube channel :) I love her little stancey-isms. That packaging really made me jealous. I already am known as a miracle wrapper in my family but Morgan is topping it. My aesthetic :) So apt to open it on Robbie Burns Night. Mention/seeing of all my six seamstress/tailors etc in one vid - heaven :)
BERNADETTE! Oh my god, you are too cute and funny. I paused the video when you said it was disgusting because I just had to tell my mom (she occasionally watches your videos) about this incredibly lovely secret saint as well as your reaction to the wine. I've been apart of two secret Santas, the first was a short story / writing focused one. One of the interests I provided was stories about disability as I am disabled. The story I got centred around a deeply ablest trope and referred to the disabled character in a very derogatory manner through out... I received support from the organizers, the kicked that writer from any future events... but I never did get a present. The second was a dog secret Santa. In November, my health crashed and so did the health of my 2 year old dog. I was physically unable to take care of him. And do to his condition he bit someone. He was re-homed, for which I am forever thankful for, even has I miss him, to this day, three years later. I messaged the organizers to pass a long the message that I did not want anything my Santa had made with Storm in mind as it hurt too much. Even getting the gifts for my other dog, Branka, was fraught. It was a beautiful bandana, unmistakably a gift for a girl dog, and a drawing of her. (And my gifty never acknowledged the gift, though they confirmed with the organizers they received it.) The most important part of secret Santa is, to me, the community. The second is the giving. My first secret Santa experience hurt because I felt like I had been spit on, and it reminded me of incredibly inappropriate comments I had received in writing classes in the past from the clueless and the malicious a like. (Handled very well by the teacher.) But I was supported by the organizers and continue to receive praise and thoughtful comments on the short story I wrote even though it's been years. The second exchange was just incredibly unfortunate circumstances. But being apart of the network gave me extra support when I needed it. It was a time of validating and celebrating our community. Even as I was hurting, I was and am still apart of that community. Because of this, I am fond and grateful for both of these experiences, the communities I was apart of, and the close friends I made.
Oooohhhhh, so lovely! Bernadette's reaction cracked me up! Mulled wine really isn't the best thing to try if you've never had an alcoholic beverage, though... I had been eying the recipe Morgan used rather fondly (partly because it includes spices I need an excuse to purchese) and now I have no choice but to mix up some Hipocras myself! Cheers, you lovely humans, this was a wonderfully cheery bit of my Friday evening 💚
Oh wow, red wine is perhaps not the best first alcoholic drink to start with, Bernadette! It took me a long time to start liking it! I bet it tastes fabulous!
Rachel Gugler I’ve tried red wine many times, and the only ones I’ve liked have been the ones that don’t leave me with that unpleasant mouth-feel you get from the peel of blue grapes. And no matter how many times I’ve tried blue grapes, I’ve disliked them all my life.
It took me 5-6 years to develop a taste for merlots, zins, and red blends. Then another 4 before I liked Cav Savs. That corresponded with my introduction to sour beers.
Nillie It’s so odd, because I get the exact same thing from white wine. Red wine, almost never. Well, with decent wine, anyway. But most people seem to get it from red. Wonder, what’s up with that...😄
I don't actually like most white wines! They are always too sweet or too bitter with no flavor to balance any of it. The closest I get usually is a rosé.
This is so wholesome thank you for shareing with us. I have made my wife and myself multiple walking skirts now and they are a joy. You have improved our daily life!
I’m not a huge wine fan, I find them far too bitter for my tastes, however I have found one that I quite enjoy, it’s one of the cheapest I’ve ever found and it’s a blackberry merlot, the sweetness of the berries counteracts the tannins in the wine and it tastes quite lovely! Of course if Ms. Banner chooses, she could quite easily makes a mulled juice instead of a mulled wine! Have fun and enjoy yourself in the 20’s!
Coming back now, your voice has gotten so much stronger since this was filmed. I wouldn't notice it with regular listening, but coming back its amazing the change of how your voice has grown. Congratulations on the hard work!
This was so much fun to watch! I'm sad this is the last Secret Santa video, but thrilled that this was all such a lovely experience! Also, I had a moment of overwhelming kinship with Bernadette during her wine tasting. That would have absolutely have been my reaction as well :D
What a lovely house full of friends to celebrate with! Thanks for sharing and linking everyone together. It’s been wonderful getting to meet all of you!
Ah! Just when I thought I'd seen all the Costubers' Secret Santa videos, I get the joy of seeing one more! :) I remember watching Morgan Donner wrapping the gift up so carefully and artfully. Lovely to see it reach its destination.
Best secret Santa video EVER! Story was entertaining, shenanigans that ensued were silly and funny, and the statement at the end from the young chap was spot on! (1820's)
Haha aw, poor Bernadette. Perhaps she should try a nice light or medium honey mead. It's far more paletable than wine --especially to a person who has never had alcoholic beverages. --It's also really nice when warmed up a bit on a cold winter's day. :)
"Actually treats nothing" and "1820s", agreed, sir, agreed. I chime along with those who put forth the suggestion on cider. It is more pleasant to pallet than wine. I also have not been one for the typical alcoholics of beer or wine.
Hehe...might just be a matter of getting used to it.. but some people genuinely don’t like the taste of wine. I know people, twice Bernadette‘s age, that make that same face, when tasting it 😄 Also...I just love the vests you’re wearing. I think a pair of wide legged trouser with a matching vest from a nice woll(blend) will be my first project this year. It’s such a classic look...👌
Love the bloopers :D and poor Bernadette - my son would have had the same expression! He hates alcohol - of any sort - but thank you all for sharing, that was a lovely way to end January!
Jan Uzzell I don’t like anything that’s strong enough to smell of alcohol, nor the mouth-feel of most red wines (or blue grapes), but white wine is good.
That was a delight to watch! So good to see you ladies having fun! And very sporting of Bernadette to have a sip. Though I must admit I laughed at her grimace even while wincing myself. That must have been quite an experience.
Bernadette's first taste of wine is how I think we all first reacted to wine. At lest for me. I've learned to like some kinds of wine.....but not a lot of them, so 100% understandable Bernadette.
Sometimes, a drink is more needed towards the end of January than it is in the actual holiday season! And of course, so happy to see Cathy and Bernadette in the same place ❤️
How fun!! Wish I could have smelled the wonderful scent coming from that kitchen! Hope you and Bernadette have had a wonderful visit. You all are so much fun to watch!!

May I suggest a white wine next time? And a Riesling is probably a better first white wine than a Chardonnay or Soave.
You know that saying the owner resembles the pet and vice versa..poor Bernadette Banner....
You could try a really nice sweet dessert wine like: Roscato Rosso Dolce Sweet Red, or Arbor Mist Blackberry Merlot!

“1820s” ...👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼❤️🤟🏼
Add antibiotics to the 1820s and I'm definitely in.
Bronte and deodorant plus regular washing and so am I ( very acute sense of smell here 😂)
I just want to tell you a heart felt thank you Cathy.
That's wonderful!! Thank you so much for sharing!
That was thoroughly enjoyable, but I could hear my dad's voice chastising that you should always use the flat of the blade to scrape food off of the cutting board otherwise you will dull your cooking blade. And I'm totally with Bernadette, alcohol is nasty.
Ha, my father is the same, hence so am I ! :D
Lmao yes cheers to all our father's voices in our heads while we chop, they've saved many a blade :)
Yeah my grandpa was in my head telling me the same thing!
I love how you all give shout outs to each other and influence each other 💕 CosTube is the best
you all seem so wonderful to spend time with omg what a joy of a little video. Though, a red wine as your first alcoholic drink was very bold on Bernadette's part!
And not a particularly “easy” red wine either, based on what Cathy said!
And a mulled wine at that!
i like the fact that morgan donner calls her channel the "morgan donner party" it always makes me chuckle. goodness i need people like you guys in my rl.
Save the blue wrapper! Dissolve in hot water to dye muslin a lovely hue. ♥️ Sugar cone is a pieced quilt block from olden times.
dc in rb what a great idea!
'We're in Europe!' I see you from the other side of the Brexit timeline and I still agree!
Morgan’s wrapping skills are to die for!
Yeah, here they sell the spices for mulled wine in a teabag, so you can make a sort of herbal tea with water if you want
Yes, i don't drink wine and that is what i do. That smells sooo good cooking. mmmm
TracyLynn AP
True, spicy cider oder even grape juice is a great alternative. Very yummy!
I make mulled cider for my girls as an after sledding treat, while parents get Gluhwein. :) No need to add sugar! Just let the mulling spices hang out with the cider as it warms. Bonus points if you put a clementine peel in with it.
@@thebookwyrmslair6757
Do you ever then use the clementine peel to make candied peel?
"Am I going to get drunk on this?" Bernadette is so me. I would have reacted the same way. I have never drunken any alcohol in my life...
Love watching friends enjoy time together. You are all wonderful and inspiring! Thanks so much for what you bring to the youtube community!
1:28 hot Cathy in mainstream clothing alert, for the shallow people like me who like to gawk at pretty in many outfits :)
Oh my! Too many things about this I enjoyed. Bernadette's reaction to the mulled wine! Classic! Thanks for sharing!
Watching you with Bernadette and your friends is like taking a step back in time. My DREAM is to visit England at least once in my lifetime. I will definitely make it happen. But until I can I will watch your videos and admire all that you do. ❤
I quite enjoy the tiny sieve in the drawer. Now it just needs to find its teapot friend.
Zach whispering "1820:ies" was the best 😁
Tramlines in wine are an indicator of the alcohol content. So too many means the wine hasn't aged enough. It's akin to looking at a glass of spirit (rum, whisky, vodka) and seeing how far the ring from the top of the spirit crawls up the inside of the glass (more alcohol content, the higher the climbing ring).
"It's disgusting."
Give it time Bernadette. 🤣
“I’ve never been one to follow the crowd, Bernadette.” Oh my, I laughed through the whole video. Your joy and humor are so beautiful to behold.
Bernadette is so pure.... I love that girl !
I loved the tribute to Noelle @costuming_drama while you were grating the sugar.
(And my gifty never acknowledged the gift, though they confirmed with the organizers they received it.)
The most important part of secret Santa is, to me, the community.
Rachel Gugler
I’ve tried red wine many times, and the only ones I’ve liked have been the ones that don’t leave me with that unpleasant mouth-feel you get from the peel of blue grapes. And no matter how many times I’ve tried blue grapes, I’ve disliked them all my life.
It took me 5-6 years to develop a taste for merlots, zins, and red blends. Then another 4 before I liked Cav Savs. That corresponded with my introduction to sour beers.
Nillie
It’s so odd, because I get the exact same thing from white wine. Red wine, almost never. Well, with decent wine, anyway. But most people seem to get it from red. Wonder, what’s up with that...😄
Rara Avis
There are some white wines (and green grapes) that can cause a similar mouth-feel, but it’s more common in red wines and blue grapes.
This was so good, I just loved this vlog and the people in it were so amazing. Thank you Cathy for sharing. Cheers!!!
Rewatching this video now, only a few months later, the line "Would you like to be patient zero?" has a whole new meaning
'Don't you have baking scales here..?' - 'It's your flat, my dear.' I almost choked on my tea 😄❤
This has made me feel much better about the Christmas gifts for friends I have not yet seen this decade which are lurking in the corner!
I'm definitely wondering how to get an invite to Cathy's house, it seems like amazing fun and is obviously the place where all the cool kids hang out.
Ah! Just when I thought I'd seen all the Costubers' Secret Santa videos, I get the joy of seeing one more! :) I remember watching Morgan Donner wrapping the gift up so carefully and artfully. Lovely to see it reach its destination.
Bernadette’s reaction to wine was my reaction to wine 🍷 I eventually found the one wine that I will drink.
Oh the strainers! My grandmother always had a strainer like that for percolated coffee hanging on the wall by the stove.
A perfect conclusion to the entire delightful Secret Santa event!
Thank you for making me giggle :) the dash downstairs for the parcel really made me chuckle.
Those buttons are beautiful!!
Love the quote!!
Best secret Santa video EVER! Story was entertaining, shenanigans that ensued were silly and funny, and the statement at the end from the young chap was spot on! (1820's)
Thank you for the love & passion you all live & teach by example. You all make a positive difference in our world!
Stay blessed.
Haha aw, poor Bernadette. Perhaps she should try a nice light or medium honey mead. It's far more paletable than wine --especially to a person who has never had alcoholic beverages. --It's also really nice when warmed up a bit on a cold winter's day. :)
I just became a member of Laci! I'm slowly getting all the Janet Arnold books this year, one or two every few months. That store is amazing!
You all are just a breath of fresh air to watch!
I know people, twice Bernadette‘s age, that make that same face, when tasting it 😄
Also...I just love the vests you’re wearing.
Jan Uzzell
I don’t like anything that’s strong enough to smell of alcohol, nor the mouth-feel of most red wines (or blue grapes), but white wine is good.
Zack's line at the end was brilliant!
Sometimes, a drink is more needed towards the end of January than it is in the actual holiday season! And of course, so happy to see Cathy and Bernadette in the same place ❤️
Its lovely to see Zack (aka adult film star Charlie Snake) enjoing festive atmosphere with you.
This is exactly what i need to start off the weekend🥰
I fully thought you called Bernadette “Bird” during the mulled wine adventure and that was as a moment.
Loved this lovely soft sweet mulled vlog!
You all are just simply amazing and I love Bernadette's reaction to the wine 😂
This honestly made me laugh out loud. Thank you sincerely for the joy, Madam Hay.
I adored this and i FANGIRLED at the pinsent cameo!
My normal comment is "❤❤❤" because there is no real way to show the smile on my face and the love in my heart. ❤❤❤
That teapot clock in the background in the kitchen is so cute!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bernadette's reaction to the wine is literally me
Watching this from the start of 2021. I cringed when I heard that one man say "Bring on the 20's!"
Four of the coolest people, pretty clothes and humor, all in one video. This must be my lucky day!
How fun!! Wish I could have smelled the wonderful scent coming from that kitchen! Hope you and Bernadette have had a wonderful visit. You all are so much fun to watch!!
You’re ohana is so genuine and sincere! And I love it! Mulled wine is certainly not for everyone! But kudos for Bernadette for giving it a try! Especially as the first wine
