@@justmelv23 yeah agreed this if first time ive seen this end ever and not a fan. i feel ive seen other version that have some slight changes but mostly the same this one is completely different
After seeing this movie about 10 years ago, I haven't been able to listen to "We've Only Just Begun" with a clear head....it takes me back to that room!
Yeah Ive seen this movie a bunch of times, and this ending Ive only seen like one other time. Its so awful!!! The one where hes alive and plays the recording and his wife overheas his daughter is so much better, agree with you!
1408 is kind of underrated. There's some debate over the better version between director's cut and theatrical cut, but overall, the movie is almost a masterclass on building tension and a dense, creepy atmosphere. If the room number holds any significance, it's the old superstition where hotel elevators don't have a 13th floor, and the numbers 1408 added together, equal 13. Great reaction as usual Asia and BJ!
When he said they pretend like there’s no 13th floor he was just talking about the fact that if you go into a hotel you’ll never find the 13th floor. They simply skip that number and go straight to 14. It doesn’t mean that the 13th floor doesn’t exist. They’re just calling it the 14th floor .
You 2 are by far my favorite movie reactors. Just found you guys a couple months ago but feel like I been here the whole time now! This is one of my favorite movies.

John Cusack is such an underrated actor. He had never done a horror movie until this one. Pretty versatile. He got his start back in the 80's with teen comedies, but he's done action, rom-coms, drama, everything.
In 2003 he did get a taste of the horror genre with the movie Identity that one was a pretty good movie as well. When 1408 came out I wasn't sure it would be any good I love Stephen Kings books and short stories, but this came out pretty well and I prefer the theatrical ending to the director's cut.
I LOVE this movie. There's not enough reactions to this. I'll never forge the butterflies and goosebumps I got the first time I saw the scene where he sees himself in the other window across the way, and when he goes out on the ledge. This movie is so good
Agree! That is an amazingly creepy scene and terrified me the first time I saw it. It was just so... unsettling and eerie. I've seen 1408 many times now and I love it just as much as I did the first time.
One thing I never fully understood was Mike’s skepticism of room 1408. Even if you truly don’t believe in anything supernatural, any person could look at the situation from a purely logical perspective. 56 people over the years have checked into that room, and every single one of them has died within an hour of being in the room. The causes all range from natural reasons to suicide, but the one common denominator that they all have is the room. So clearly something in the room is killing people, be it devil, demon, leprechauns, black mold, or gas leak. So looking at the situation from a purely logical perspective, there’s no way in hell I’d ever stay in that room!
I used to work in Hospitality and there is generally no 13th floor in a hotel because it’s considered bad luck. Normally the 13th floor is called the concierge lounge/Mezzanine or something of that nature, and there’s also no #13 emergency room in hospitals either.
So, when this movie came out, I went to see it in the theater with my mom and sister. Right around the 20:05 moment, the power in the theater went out. We were all sitting there in the dark, tense and scared, until some brilliant smartass got up, walked over to the door, and exclaimed, "it's locked!" There was a lot of nervous laughter, but boy we all got the hell out of there FAST.
I rented an apartment in a highrise here in Chicago that didn't have a 13 floor. The top floor was 14 and my floor right beneath was the 12 floor. 13 is considered bad luck.
“1408” adds up to “13” … thirteen is considered unlucky…The hotel sent him the postcard…The Hotel is haunted, the original caretaker and his family dies on the 14th floor…the hotels energy has transformed it into a mind bending element that forces you to confront you demons and come to term with them or take the easy way out by “ending it.” Even in death you cannot escape you become “apart” of the room. BTW, the director’s cut has a much different ending.
In theaters, he actually survives and reunites with his ex-wife. Going through recovered items, he plays the cassette recorder and both he and his ex-wife hear their daughter's voice "from beyond the grave" and the movie ends with the ex-wife being shocked. The ending at the cemetery was the original unused ending, saved for the video release. When the movie came out on DVD and Blu-Ray, they released the theatrical ending on DVD but the other ending was used on the Blu-Ray. Unfortunately, there really isn't much of a warning regarding which version is out there on TV or streaming, so viewers will have no idea which ending it is until it happens.
Liars moon did the same. There is a good ending and a bad ending and they were both released at the same time on video. With no difference in packaging so it's up to chance which version you got. It is loads of fun and means eveyone gets a different experience
I love this movie because it's different from traditional horror flicks, but it's one of maybe two that I've seen in my adult life where I was genuinely scared and disturbed. The way the sequence of events plays out in the room is cohesively abstract, like a bad dream. It's like the room literally becomes your worst nightmare, huanting you according to your personal fears. Terrifying!!!! Glad you guys watched the director's cut too, I felt that was a more fitting ending than the theatrical release. Thx for reacting to it y'all, a lot of reactors sleep on this one.
On the radio the song that keeps playing is We've Only Just Begun by The Carpenters. I noticed that this was the directors cut version. In the theatrical version there are certain parts thats not in the directors cut. Also the theatrical version has a different ending.
There is (of course) a thirteenth floor in any building that has 13 or more floors, however nearly all hotels don’t “have a 13th floor in an elevator etc.” because it is a superstition. Next time you are in a tall hotel notice the elevator will go from 12 to 14. ❤
And they usually put the buttons 4 across so it’s less noticeable. The 12 will be on the far right and 14 on the far left of the next row. 9 10 11 12 14 15 16 17
When I read this short story it made me feel ill. King is my favorite author and I love scary things, but this story was really intense for me! I highly recommend it! 😂
I'm a huge King fan as well. It's been awhile since I read it, but from what I remember, it was kinda suggested that the room was like a portal to another dimension, or something like that. He kept hearing a noise coming through the wall, and the reality he was in started to come apart. It was a little like a Lovecraftian tale of room that was a portal to another dimension. I think they made it more of a traditional haunted hotel room for the movie. Am I misremembering the story?
@@beesnort3163 I need to reread it. I can't remember anything about oranges. I've read so many of his stories, I seriously can't remember this story very well.

I rented this film when it was first released on DVD. It was the theatrical version. A year or so later, I purchased a copy not realizing that the director's cut had a different ending. After watching it, I was more than a little confused.
1408: 1+4+0+8=13. Superstition, 13 is an unlucky number. And because of this most buildings don't have a 13th floor. Elevator buttons go 12 and then 14. The Carpenters, "We've Only Just Begun". ✌️
Oh, I think I get it: The Director's Cut is someone trying to recreate the magic from The Mist. The theatrical version is a more haunting ending. No idea why everyone keeps reacting to this director's version.
The thing about the thirteenth floor with hotels and some commercial buildings is a real thing sometimes, not common these days but it can still be found. The number 13 is supposed to be unlucky, and some guests may not want a room on that floor - so the hotels simply do not list a thirteenth floor, and the names of the floors go straight from 12 to 14. It's like a game. Of course, you can stand on the sidewalk and count the stories without the illusion, and the hotels have just renamed what's actually the thirteenth floor. Which, in this case, 1408 is on.
Love this movie. They really play on the fear of the unknown since it is never actually explained what is wrong with the room. All we know is the room drives people insane and locks their consciousness in the same eternal 60 minute loop until they end themselves or die some other way.
I like the other ending. Where he is rescued out of the room from a firefighter. Then the wife finding his tape of the daughter talking to him and her reaction.
Love you guys❤ Hope you’re having a wonderful weekend😊 I got the old dvd that has 3 different endings. I like the ending where he lives and the wife hears the tape
Did they watch the theatrical or directors cut? Edit: goddammit it, directs cut. The theatrical ending is waaaay better. Sucks that they default to the director's cut for online streaming so new viewers don't get the true joy.
@PeteO-v4y Good god, why? DC ending is a stupid jump scare that makes no sense, TC ending is brilliant and refreshing for it's subtlety like the movie itself. Every time 1408 gets talked about "TC ending is better than DC" is in the comments.
The analyses of this film on YT are really well done too. There was one that that looked at Dante's Inferno and profound loss. It's not the neat stages of grief that is mistakenly referred to. It's pure emotional chaos akin to going through your own personal hell. Just when you think it can't get any worse, you can feel yourself falling into another level of pain and loss. I rewatched it months after my husband suddenly die when he was only 49 and man, did it hit different compared to watching it for the first time. It just made me love the film even more because it was portraying what someone is going through grief and trauma so well.
You guys should've watched the theatrical version. That ending is amazingly better than the director's cut. And it fits the personal demons that he is facing, especially what killed his marriage, so much better. To me, the director's cut ending is cheesy and doesn't fit with the rest of the film's message.
The best part of the movie is Samuel Jackson's hard sell of the room. He puts it over so amazingly, bribing, warning, threatening and all but begging Cusak's character NOT to stay there, and then ultimately, when it's clear he's dead-set on it, resigning to apathy- he already knew, and it was that which finally put a doubt in the non-believers mind. Fear crept in. And man, as a viewer, we were already sold.
Loving your reactions! You're right about Stephen King's novels. He is a master story teller...the way he fills out his characters...makes them so believable that you really become invested in his stories!
Another good one for Halloween is Flatliners (the original) . Has a Halloween parade in it. Stars Keifer Sutherland, Kevin Bacon and Julia Roberts. It’s a horror film but it’s more about redemption.
Loved your reaction. In the end Mike was able to destroy the room. To me he was checking to ensure it was complete but was able to leave to be with Katie.
I remember that year I booked a cruise and right before I went on the cruise, I saw this movie. When I went on my trip, I found out that room number was 1416, which was close to room 1408. I had to pass by the room to get to the elevator.
I live in NY in a 16 storied building and we don’t have a 13th floor, well, we do but it’s marked 14 they skip the number 13 and I’ve seen that in many buildings, not sure why.😊

I had only ever seen the theatrical ending, so I thought I misremembered the end while watching this video. Definitely does not feel right.
Lots of buildings don't have 13th floors. It's a superstition thing.
My Grandpa's office building doesn't have a 13th floor. In some Asian countries they don't have a fourth floor. Word is similar to the word death.
I mean, they all have a 13th floor, they're just in denial. Everyone on the '14th' floor, you know what floor you're really on. (mitch hedberg)
And staircases never have 13 steps.
I work in a catholic hospital, no 13 room, no 13 floor, it’s considered taboo

I rewatched it months after my husband suddenly die when he was only 49 and man, did it hit different compared to watching it for the first time. It just made me love the film even more because it was portraying what someone is going through grief and trauma so well.
You guys should've watched the theatrical version. That ending is amazingly better than the director's cut. And it fits the personal demons that he is facing, especially what killed his marriage, so much better. To me, the director's cut ending is cheesy and doesn't fit with the rest of the film's message.
Yes I hate when ppl react to dumb versions of movies for first time. This ending is tacky compared
Having seen (and prefer) the theatrical cut of this film, Asia and BJ would FREAK OUT if they watched that ending.
I loved the "scary guy" in the vent above the rooms, that scene was the only goofy party of this movie; I found it hilarious
halfway through the video...I just realized I was watching this while in a hotel room.
The receding hairline ghost lady with the weapon always scared the shit out of me 🤣
1408 is a true psychological thriller.
That's the THIRD ending I've seen to this film!
The best one is hearing their daughters voice on tape.
One of my favorite films of all time! 😃😄❤
Great review thanks folks, in regards to the size of the furniture and door in the opening scene people were smaller in overall size.
Yeah true. Plus it was a bed & breakfast in a small town, not a luxury hotel suite. That was the first thing that came to my mind
This is one of those movies I've seen as an adult that scared me bad, like Hereditary. Great reaction guys, y'all are too funny 🎉❤
U guys gotta silent hill next
Loved your reaction. In the end Mike was able to destroy the room. To me he was checking to ensure it was complete but was able to leave to be with Katie.
I remember that year I booked a cruise and right before I went on the cruise, I saw this movie. When I went on my trip, I found out that room number was 1416, which was close to room 1408. I had to pass by the room to get to the elevator.
DeeeeeTROIT! Go Tigers!
1+4+0+8=13
Hotels skip the number 13 so floor 14 is actually the 13th floor.
Room “13” on floor 13. ☠️👻
I live in NY in a 16 storied building and we don’t have a 13th floor, well, we do but it’s marked 14 they skip the number 13 and I’ve seen that in many buildings, not sure why.😊
